Florida State football film review: Boston College 3rd Quarter

FSU increased its lead from 31-7 to 41-7 and played a lot of reserves.

1-10 at Fs25 Manuel, EJ deep out pass complete to SMITH, R. for 28 yards to the BC47, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Simmons,J), clock 14:51. 21 43 The space between BC's deep and underneath coverage is ridiculous. This pass is completed 20 yards downfield and the deep coverage is still five yards off when Rodney catches it. Nice aggressive start to the half, and a good anticipation throw from EJ.
1-10 at Bc47 Manuel, EJ sideline pass complete to SMITH, R. for 5 yards to the BC42 (Divitto,S;Asprilla,M), clock 14:16. 21 43 Speed out instead of the deep out they threw last time. Jimbo is really in rhythm as a playcaller. The fact that everything he calls is working helps.
2-5 at Bc42 THOMPSON, C. rush over left guard for 14 yards to the BC28, 1ST DOWN FS (Simmons,J), clock 13:53. 20 gun 43 This is a counter-trey from gun, with zone read action freezing the defense rather than a counter step from the back. Playside OL block down, guard and tackle pull around the center and lead through the hole. Stealing a page from the Gus Mahlzan/Chad Morris offense here. Haven't seen FSU run this play before.
1-10 at Bc28 Manuel, EJ screen pass complete to THOMPSON, C. for 9 yards to the BC19, out-of-bounds, clock 13:29. 20 gun 43 EJ takes the easy completion to the open back in the flat and lets him turn a 3 yard pass into a 9 yard gain. These type of plays and his checks at the line are the reason FSU has gone from having one of the highest rates of 3 and outs last year to one of the lowest this year.
2-1 at Bc19 THOMPSON, C. rush over right guard for 2 yards to the BC17, 1ST DOWN FS (Clancy,N), clock 13:00. 21 43 Inside zone play and Thompson actually misses a cutback lane that could have gone for a TD, but the line gets enough push to get the first down.
1-10 at Bc17 Manuel, EJ screen pass complete to THOMPSON, C. for 9 yards to the BC8 (Sylvia,S), clock 12:18. 21 gun 43 Again, just taking the easy yards on first down and letting your athletes make you look good.
2-1 at Bc08 PRYOR, L. rush over right tackle for 5 yards to the BC3, 1ST DOWN FS (Pierre-Louis,K), clock 12:01. 21 gun 43 Outside zone play and Lonnie actually picks the wrong gap here, but just bulls his way through a few tackles an spins his way down to the 3. Just brutal running.
1-G at Bc03 PRYOR, L. rush over right end for 3 yards to the BC0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 11:45. 21 43 Fullback belly on the goal line again and Tre Jackson does a great job combo blocking the DT with Stork, then climbing to the second level and sealing off the linebacker. Lonnie has a clear lane to the end zone.

Drive: 8 plays, 75 yards, TOP 03:22 Great drive. Methodical and efficient. The only plays that went for less than 8 yards were runs that went for first downs or touchdowns.

Vince Williams in man coverage is at a bit of a speed disadvantage but still makes the tackle for a moderate gain.
2-6 at Bc19 Williams,A rush over left tackle for 4 yards to the BC23 (JONES, C.;CARRADINE, C.), clock 10:50. 11 425 Off tackle run with the center pulling out in front of it. Christian Jones is in his gap and makes the tackle, but he's three yards downfield when he makes contact. Would like to see him be more aggressive and get in his hole at the line of scrimmage.
3-2 at Bc23 Timeout Boston College, clock 10:30.
3-2 at Bc23 Williams,A rush over left end for no gain to the BC23 (CARRADINE, C.), PENALTY BC holding declined, clock 10:25. 11 425 Toss sweep, run down by Carradine with an assist from the BC tight end hanging off his back.
4-2 at Bc23 Levano,G punt 52 yards to the FS25, GREENE, R. return 24 yards to the FS49 (Divitto,S). Very nice return by Green. No critical errors in the punt game so far.

Manuel diagnoses it and checks to a different play, hits Rodney Smith who is wide open on a slant. Wilder with a crushing block and Smith turns the 8 yard throw into a 16 yard gain.
1-10 at Bc35 Manuel, EJ flag pass intercepted by Asprilla,M at the BC12, Asprilla,M return 7 yards to the BC19 (WILDER, J.). 21 gun 43 O'Leary is wide open on a corner route in front of the safety. EJ sees a rush (that isn't very close) and is shying away at the end of his motion. Overthrow right into the safety's hands.

Waisome needs to read the pattern better. Pass the vertical route off to the safety and meet the back in the flat closer to the line of scrimmage, before he can turn upfield and make a move on you.

Nile Lawrence-Stample beats the block and forces the back to take a wider path and the rest of the defense pursues and closes nicely.
3-1 at Bc28 Williams,A rush over right tackle for no gain to the BC28 (LAWRENCE, N. L.), clock 08:06. 11 425 Draw play is played beautifully by the FSU DL. They control their blockers and stay in their lanes, then NLS gets off his block and makes a nice tackle. Goodness.

Cam Erving plays patty-cake with the defensive end instead of blocking him and he finishes off the play.

1-10 at Fs38 FREEMAN, D. rush right for 19 yards to the BC43, 1ST DOWN FS (Sylvia,S;Edebali,K), clock 06:26. 11 gun 43 Power play is met in the hole by BC, nice running by Devonta to bounce it outside then spin off the tackle of the corner. Good, hard running.
1-10 at Bc43 Manuel, EJ sideline pass complete to SMITH, R. for 15 yards to the BC28, 1ST DOWN FS (Asprilla,M), clock 05:59. 11 gun 43 Again, just a curl to Rodney against the huge cushion from the DB. BC is apparently content to give this up all the way down the field.
1-10 at Bc28 FREEMAN, D. rush over right tackle for 14 yards to the BC14, 1ST DOWN FS (Sylvia,S;Simmons,J), clock 05:34. 11 gun 43 Power play again, this time with Cam Erving pulling through the hole and demolishing the linebacker.

1-5 at Bc09 FREEMAN, D. rush over right end for 2 yards to the BC7 (Borcich,K), clock 04:43. 11 gun 43 Counter play and Watson gets pushed into the backfield, disrupting Freeman's path, but he is still able to fight forward for 2 yards.
2-3 at Bc07 FREEMAN, D. rush left for loss of 1 yard to the BC8 (Pierre-Louis,K), clock 04:05. 21 43 EJ spots the WLB blitz and changes the play to an outside zone away from the blitz. The blitzing linebacker times his blitz perfectly and Watson can't get much of him and Matias falls down allowing the DT and blitzer to combine on the tackle.
3-4 at Bc08 Manuel, EJ timing route pass incomplete to BENJAMIN, K., clock 03:46. 21 43 Fade route to Benjamin. Poor route, but he gets both hands on the ball and should come down with it.

1-10 at Bc21 Williams,A rush over right tackle for 2 yards to the BC23 (JONES, C.;WILLIAMS, V.), clock 03:12. 11 425 FSU clearly expecting run here as they are in Cover 3 with Karlos Williams walked all the way up into linebacker territory. Makes a nice slicing move into the backfield and almost gets a TFL. This is a counter play and there's all sorts of penetration. Good job by the BC running back to get any positive yards out of this play.
2-8 at Bc23 Rettig,C crossing pass complete to Amidon,A for 9 yards to the BC32, 1ST DOWN BC (JONES, C.), clock 02:45. 11 425 Slant/flat concept. Waisome is there before the ball but the BC receiver does a good job of shielding him from the ball and making the catch.
1-10 at Bc32 Rettig,C deep pass incomplete to Amidon,A, clock 02:31. 11 gun 425 BC decides to take a shot and runs one of the lest convincing stop and go routes you'll ever see. Waisome plays it perfectly.
2-10 at Bc32 (WAISOME, N.).
2-10 at Bc32 Rettig,C throw away pass incomplete, QB hurry by WILLIAMS, V., clock 02:25. 11 gun 425 Looks like they're trying to hit another double move to the other side. There's pressure and Rettig throws it away from the pocket again.
3-10 at Bc32 Rettig,C sideline pass complete to Dudeck, D for 4 yards to the BC36 (Williams, P.J.), clock 02:00. 11 gun 425 Whip route by the back motioning out of the backfield gets open underneath but the secondary converges and keeps it to a short gain.

1-10 at Fs23 Manuel, EJ sideline pass complete to DENT, G. for 7 yards to the FS30 (Asprilla,M), clock 01:25. 11 gun 43 Same curl against the soft cushion that they've thrown to Rodney a bunch. Throw is high, but Dent brings it in. It's fair to question why the starters are in for this drive, but you wanted to see aggression from the coaching staff.
2-3 at Fs30 THOMPSON, C. rush over left end for 11 yards to the FS41, 1ST DOWN FS (Edebali,K;Sylvia,S), clock 01:02. 20 gun 43 Stretch play to the boundary. Nicely blocked and a good job of squeezing through a narrow lane by Thompson.
1-10 at Fs41 Manuel, EJ sideline pass complete to DENT, G. for 15 yards to the BC44 (Asprilla,M), PENALTY FS illegal block (HAGGINS, J.) 10 yards to the FS46, clock 00:42. 11 gun 43 Same curl route to Dent, whose knee barely grazes the ground, but pops up and keeps running. Now the clown show begins: First, Scooter does not block in the back. He starts to but pulls his hands away without making contact. Second, the "illegal block" occurs after Dent is ruled down by the replay. How they manage to decide that he was down AND to enforce the penalty is beyond me. It's one or the other, not both.
