Florida State football film review: Boston College 4th Quarter

FSU increased its lead to 51-7.

2-5 at Bc43 Manuel, EJ middle pass complete to WILDER, J. for 7 yards to the BC36, 1ST DOWN FS (Clancy,N), clock 14:49. 20 gun 43 FSU runs off the coverage, then both backs hook up underneath. Take the easy completion and move the chains.
1-10 at Bc36 Manuel, EJ sideline pass complete to DENT, G. for 11 yards to the BC25, 1ST DOWN FS (Joy,T), clock 14:27. 20 gun 43 With the slot defender showing inside leverage and the CB giving a big cushion, FSU throws a bubble off of zone read action. The CB comes up aggressively, but Dent slips the tackle and gets a nice gain out of it.
1-10 at Bc25 WILDER, J. rush up middle for 9 yards to the BC16 (Clancy,N), clock 13:48. 20 gun 43 Read counter-trey again. If Wilder cuts inside off of Jackson's block instead of splitting the defenders he might get a few more yards, but that is really picking nits.
2-1 at Bc16 WILDER, J. rush up middle for 4 yards to the BC12, 1ST DOWN FS (Simmons,J;Pierre-Louis,K), clock 13:31. 20 gun 43 Same play. The backside linebacker reads it and shoots the gap left by the pulling linemen into the backfield but Wilder lets him go by then runs to his vacated area for the first down.
1-10 at Bc12 Manuel, EJ screen pass complete to WILDER, J. for 12 yards to the BC0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 13:06. 20 gun 43 Play action flat route route. Wilder Supermans it into the endzone from the 4.

1-10 at Bc31 Rettig,C crossing pass complete to Dudeck, D for 3 yards to the BC34 (SMITH, TERR.), clock 11:02. 11 gun 425 This is a counter off a play BC ran earlier where the back motioned out and ran a flat route. This time he starts to run the flat, then breaks it back inside, sort of like an inverted whip route. Terrance Smith is in position and makes a form tackle.
2-7 at Bc34 Rettig,C sideline pass incomplete to Evans,S, clock 10:43. 11 gun 425 Giorgio Newberry beats the BC tackle with an inside move and forces Rettig to escape the pocket, where he delivers an inaccurate throw out of bounds.

Barron appears to get beat pretty badly by the DT but he initially reaches away from him so it may have been a missed call/assignment. Glausser allows early penetration, but recovers and holds his block long enough for Smiley to get around the end.
1-10 at Fs50 FREEMAN, D. rush left for 25 yards to the BC25, 1ST DOWN FS (Williams, D), clock 08:44. 20 gun 43 Outside zone the other way to Freeman. Glauser misses his backside cutoff on the linebacker, but Freeman is able to run through the ankle tackle. Great to see Benjamin still blocking hard this late in a blowout.
1-10 at Bc25 FREEMAN, D. rush over right guard for 5 yards to the BC20 (Duggan,S;Simmons,J), clock 08:05. 20 gun 43 Now on the third consecutive outside zone BC collapses the edge pretty well and Devonta Freeman makes a nice turn upfield off into the cutback lane created by Smiley's cut block.

3-7 at Bc43 PENALTY BC false start (Wetzel,J) 5 yards to the BC38, clock 05:12. This one should have been on FSU as they were definitely in the neutral zone when the BC OL moved.
3-12 at Bc38 Dudeck, D rush up middle for loss of 10 yards to the BC28 (Williams, P.J.), clock 04:40. 11 gun 425 PJ Williams comes free on a blitz and does a good job of coming under control, seeing the handoff and tackling the ballcarrier rather than chasing the QB.

Keelin Smith misses a tackle but Reggie Northrup cleans up the play. I have no idea what this PF is for. The play is still alive, the guy is inbounds, he's a ballcarrier at this point so he has no protection by rule. Especially telling is that the guy five feet from the play doesn't throw a flag. It comes from 25 yards away.

2-3 at Bc45 McCaffrey,J rush up middle for loss of 1 yard to the BC44 (NORTHRUP, R.), clock 00:20. 11 425 I'd love to praise Reggie Northrup some more, but this is just a pathetic attempt at a block by the BC offensive lineman. He just breaks down and runs around the guy.
