Florida State football film review: USF 2nd Quarter

Florida State dominated USF in the second quarter much more than it did in the first, and extended its lead to 13-3 at half.

2-9 at Fs49 DANIELS, B.J. pass complete to MITCHELL, Terre for 7 yards to the FS42 (WAISOME, N.;JONES, C.). 12 gun 43 Curl/flat concept from bunch against zone coverage. Good throw and catch. Waisome could be a little more aggressive here. Needs to read the pattern combo.
3-2 at Fs42 DANIELS, B.J. pass complete to MITCHELL, Terre for 5 yards to the FS37, 1ST DOWN USF (WAISOME, N.). 12 gun 43 Receiver motions across the formation to a flat route again. This time FSU is in zone, and Waisome widens appropriately but is peeking in the backfield at the snap and the flat route gets open again. Fisher said FSU shouldn't have been giving ground and should have been double covered to a single man route.
1-10 at Fs37 SHAW, Marcus rush for 2 yards to the FS35 (WERNER, B.). 12 gun 43 Slot motions into the backfield setting up a triple option play(zone read + speed option), inside give. Werner plays it well and makes the tackle. Daniels probably should have kept here.
2-8 at Fs35 DANIELS, B.J. sacked for loss of 7 yards to the FS42 (DAWKINS, E.;CARRADINE, C.). 11 gun 425 USF wants to hit something downfield here. For the first time all night they do a 5 step straight dropback. Result: Everette Dawkins beats his man like a drum and he and Tank combine for the sack.
3-15 at Fs42 DANIELS, B.J. pass complete to MURRAY, Demetri for 5 yards to the FS37 (RHODES, X.). 20 gun 425 FSU does a good job covering downfield and forcing the short throw and tackle. The back is all alone on the back side but Daniels never sees him. Good job of keeping Daniels in the pocket.

Jackson appears to combo block inside, while Watson immediately tries to get to a linebacker, leaving a defensive lineman completely unblocked. Although EJ was down, he's got to be smarter than that. Trying to make that pitch was not a good decision.

Drive: 12 plays, 81 yards, TOP 06:20 A great drive nearly ends in a huge momentum turner for USF. If FSU scores to go up 14-3 here it alters the complexion of the game radically.

2-16 at Usf35 Manuel, EJ rush for 8 yards to the USF27. 10 gun 43 Cam Erving doesn't get his man upfield enough and Manuel is flushed from the pocket, turns it into an 8 yard gain.

EJ spins out and tries to hit Kelvin Benjamin over the middle but the pass is broken up. Really poor effort by Kelvin Benjamin not to come back and fight for the football. Matias is called for holding. Pass protection is not good on this drive, especially since USF is not blitzing.
