Florida State Football Film Review: USF 3rd Quarter

Florida State extends its lead from 13-3 to 30-10 by the end of the third quarter. The offense and defense were great, but FSU's special teams had a punt blocked.

KLOSS, Marvin kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, WILLIAMS, K. return 18 yards to the FS18. Fisher criticized Karlos' decision to take it out of the end zone here. He's many yards deep and the return is set up to go left. Selfish decision by a kid who has a lot of confidence after his previous big return.
1-10 at Fs18 Manuel, EJ pass complete to SMITH, R. for 6 yards to the FS24. 21 43 Little bit of a low throw. Rodney might be able to spin out and get some YAC if it's up and to the outside.
2-4 at Fs24 PRYOR, L. rush for 2 yards to the FS26 (LANARIS, Mike). 21 gun 43 Entire right side of the line is late off the ball, but Chris Thompson is leading backside, so this may be a designed cutback run. Erving doesn't hold his block on the backer quite long enough.
3-2 at Fs26 Manuel, EJ rush for loss of 1 yard to the FS25 (JENKINS, JaQuez). 22 43 Option left. Lonnie has to get up inside on the safety in this situation.
4-3 at Fs25 BEATTY, C. punt BLOCKED, recovered by USF WHITEHURST, T at FS8 (blocked by WHITEHURST, T). Fisher said this is a missed assignment by the wall. They should have shifted right. McAllister and Haplea.
Drive: 3 plays, 7 yards, TOP 01:54 Really out of sync coming out of the half. Giving USF a chance to get right back in it.
1-G at Fs08 DANIELS, B.J. rush for 6 yards to the FS2 (JOYNER, L.). 12 gun 43 Same triple option play they ran earlier, but with a guy out in front of the QB this time. Daniels reads it correctly this time and gets 5 yards.
2-G at Fs02 DANIELS, B.J. rush for 1 yard to the FS1 (CARRADINE, C.;MOODY, N.). 12 gun 43 Zone read. Great reaction by Carradine and Moody to stop the play for a yard.
3-G at Fs01 DANIELS, B.J. rush for 1 yard to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 11:55. 32 43 Old school T formation here from USF. The fake gets everybody flowing the wrong direction. Not sure who among Werner, Moody or Joyner has to keep contain here, but none of them did it.

Manuel hits Lonnie, Benjamin gets a nice block and it's a 6 yard gain on first down.
2-4 at Fs24 THOMPSON, C. rush for 6 yards to the FS30, 1ST DOWN FS (JENKINS, JaQuez). 11 gun 43 Outside zone play. USF is determined not to get beat to the outside like Wake Forest and Clemson, CT obliges them with a wicked cutback for a 10 yard gain.
1-10 at Fs30 THOMPSON, C. rush for 10 yards to the FS40, PENALTY FS holding (BENJAMIN, K.) 10 yards to the FS30. 21 43 Sigh. KB actually has a nice block on his man, just needs to let him go and not commit the obvious jersey tug that will get a flag every time (Unless you're Kenny Shaw.). These are the kind of mistakes that turn blowouts into close games.
1-10 at Fs30 WILDER, J. rush for 3 yards to the FS33 (SAGER, Luke). 12 43 Toss sweep to Wilder. Erving doesn't quite get his backside cutoff block and his man makes the tackle downfield.
2-7 at Fs33 Manuel, EJ pass complete to WILDER, J. for 4 yards to the FS37 (BAKER, George). 11 gun 425 Cam Erving allows an inside move. EJ is flushed and hits his checkdown. Manuel is really masking some line deficiencies in the 2nd and 3rd quarter.
3-3 at Fs37 Manuel, EJ pass incomplete to SMITH, R. (BARRINGTON, Sam). 12 gun 43 Slant pass to Rodney is well defended. Smith needs to flatten his route against a defender in that position. Carrying it upfield allowed the defender to get inside.
4-3 at Fs37 BEATTY, C. punt 40 yards to the USF23, out-of-bounds.
Drive: 6 plays, 19 yards, TOP 02:55 Penalty takes an explosive TD off the board. Can't have that.
1-10 at Usf23 LAMAR, Lindsey rush for no gain to the USF23 (BROOKS, T.). 11 gun 425 Inverted veer. Werner stays at home and forces the back wide and Brooks cleans up the play. Great defense.
2-10 at Usf23 LAMAR, Lindsey rush for 3 yards to the USF26 (MCALLISTER, D.). 11 gun 425 This is some kind of sweep or pin and pull zone play, but Timmy Jernigan gets pushed upfield 3 yards by the downblocking center and the back follows takes the crease this creates up the middle.
3-7 at Usf26 DANIELS, B.J. pass incomplete to DAVIS, Andre. 11 gun 425 Some kind of coverage bust here, but BJ can't hit the open man on the half-roll.
4-7 at Usf26 BROCKHAUS-KANN punt 37 yards to the FS37, fair catch by GREENE, R..
Drive: 3 plays, 3 yards, TOP 01:06 Solid defense and again Daniels can't hit the open man.
1-10 at Fs37 Manuel, EJ pass complete to GREENE, R. for 32 yards to the USF31, 1ST DOWN FS (MONTGOMERY, F). 21 43 Great play all around. Line protects well. EJ moves in the pocket nicely to give the route time to clear. Rashad flattens his post route out to create room in front of the deep dropping safeties.
1-10 at Usf31 PRYOR, L. rush for 7 yards to the USF24 (MONTGOMERY, F). 21 gun 43 FSU pushes the pace after the explosive play and gets great push from the OL.
2-3 at Usf24 Manuel, EJ pass complete to SMITH, R. for 7 yards to the USF17, 1ST DOWN FS (BARRINGTON, Sam). 21 gun 43 Pretty sure this is an automatic "gift rule" throw by EJ. They actually have another stretch play on, but EJ spots the alignment advantage and hits the bubble. This is good quarterbacking.
1-10 at Usf17 THOMPSON, C. rush for 12 yards to the USF5, 1ST DOWN FS (MONTGOMERY, F). 21 43 Nice pitch by EJ and CT hits the corner. Drive is really cooking now.
1-G at Usf05 PRYOR, L. rush for 4 yards to the USF1 (CHANDLER, Todd). 21 gun 43 If Jackson holds his block just a hair longer this is a touchdown. Still good, hard running on the goal line.
2-G at Usf01 Manuel, EJ rush for no gain to the USF1 (WATSON, Elkino). 21 43 FSU tries to catch USF off guard by hurrying to the line and running a QB sneak. Comes up about 6 inches short.
3-G at Usf01 Timeout Florida State, clock 05:13.
3-G at Usf01 Manuel, EJ pass complete to HAPLEA, K. for 1 yard to the USF0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 05:09. 23 632 Fisher correctly resists the urge to get stubborn and try to shove it up the middle against a defense that is selling out. Neither TE was even covered at all. Daniel Glauser lined up in the backfield as an H-back.

1-10 at Usf25 DANIELS, B.J. pass complete to LAMAR, Lindsey for 2 yards to the USF27 (DENT, G.). 11 pistol 425 Fake jet sweep action. Everette Dawkins with the quick pressure. Daniels evades and gets it to his checkdown who is tackled for no gain. Great defense.
2-8 at Usf27 LAMAR, Lindsey rush for 1 yard to the USF28 (MCCLOUD, A.). 11 gun 425 Sprint draw goes nowhere. Defensive line totally controlling their man.
3-7 at Usf28 DANIELS, B.J. pass incomplete to MITCHELL, Terre. 20 gun 425 FSU shows blitz, backs out of it. BJ Daniels can't find anyone open but disciplined rush lanes (Especially by Mario Edwards Jr.) keep him in the pocket and eventually he heaves it out of bounds. Extremely close to intentional grounding.
4-7 at Usf28 BROCKHAUS-KANN punt 45 yards to the FS27, fair catch by GREENE, R..
Drive: 3 plays, 3 yards, TOP 01:29 Great defense. Momentum is all FSU at this point.
1-10 at Fs27 Manuel, EJ pass incomplete to FREEMAN, D.. 20 gun 43 EJ gets a little bit of happy feet, doesn't throw from a good base and puts it at Freeman's feet on the checkdown.
2-10 at Fs27 PRYOR, L. rush for loss of 1 yard to the FS26 (SAGER, Luke). 20 gun 43 Watson gets whipped badly on this play. Woof.
3-11 at Fs26 Manuel, EJ pass complete to SHAW, K. for 47 yards to the USF27, 1ST DOWN FS. 10 gun 43 Similar route concept as the long pass play to Rashad Greene in the first half. The safety is just totally flat-footed here. Both Rashad and Kenny Shaw run right by him. If EJ puts this on Kenny's inside shoulder OR throws it to Rashad, it's a TD. Should note the excellent pass protection. EJ has tons of room to step into this throw.
1-10 at Usf27 PRYOR, L. rush for 7 yards to the USF20 (MONTGOMERY, F;WEBSTER, Kayvon). 21 gun 43 Nice job by Lonnie to slip through a pretty small hole. Never gets tackled.
2-3 at Usf20 Manuel, EJ pass complete to O'LEARY, N. for 6 yards to the USF14 (LATTIMORE, DeDe), PENALTY USF holding (JENKINS, JaQuez) 10 yards to the USF10, 1ST DOWN FS, NO PLAY. 22 43 Play action rollout. If EJ wanted to run with it, he could have gone a long way. Totally outflanked the defense.
1-G at Usf10 Manuel, EJ rush for 5 yards to the USF5 (GIDDINS, Ryne). 11 gun 43 Fake bubble, QB lead draw. If Kenny Shaw walls his man off to the outside it's probably a touchdown.
