Florida State football film review: Clemson 1st quarter

New, comments

Every week we break down the result of the previous game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Clemson? Did the result have more to do with FSU playing well or the opponent playing poorly, or luck? Read to find out.

Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

And this takes forever for our staff to put together, so please do share it on facebook and tweet it liberally.

Down/Distance Yard Formation Result Analysis (Jimbo notes included where appropriate
AGUAYO, R. kickoff 65 yards to the CU0, touchback.
1-10 at Cu25 4-2-5 BOYD pass complete to SECKINGER for 9 yards to the CU34, fumble forced by JOYNER, L., fumble by SECKINGER recovered by FS BROOKS, T. at CU34. Clemson motions Sammy Watkins out from the backfield to get a free release and hits him on the curl. Joyner with a nifty move to poke the ball out and Brooks in on the recovery. Can't ask for a better start.
Drive: 1 plays, 9 yards, TOP 00:08
1-10 at Cu34 21 I FREEMAN, D. rush for 11 yards to the CU23, 1ST DOWN FS (R. SMITH;BLANKS). Clemson is playing a nickel package vs. FSU's 21 personnel. There are only 6 defenders in the box. Weakside zone run catches Clemson's Vic Beasley in pass rush mode and there is a huge hole to the left.
1-10 at Cu23 21 Bunch FREEMAN, D. rush for 1 yard to the CU22 (BREELAND;ST. ANTHONY). Zone run away from the bunch. When Abrams motions from the slot into the H back alignment, Clemson's linebacker steps into the A gap towards the play, which disrupts the blocking assignments and ultimately dooms the play. Clemson seems to have spotted a tendency there. It looks like FSU actually had an advantage and should have run to the bunch side.
2-9 at Cu22 11 Gun WINSTON, J. pass complete to BENJAMIN, K. for 22 yards to the CU0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 13:38. FSU is in 11 personnel, but Devonta Freeman is split out wide giving an empty backfield look. The pass is actually a form of a levels concept with the outside receivers running go routes and all 3 interior receivers breaking to the right. The play is designed to create a horizontal stretch of the underneath defenders. Because of Freeman motioning out of the backfield Greene is being covered by a linebacker and would have been wide open. However, Kelvin Benjamin noted that part of the gameplan included a point of emphasis on throwing to Benjamin whenever they tried to cover him man to man. Clemson is actually playing Cover 2 Man, but the quick strike from Winston beats the safety and Benjamin shows great leaping ability and body control to bring the ball down and establish possession.
Clemson is challenging the ruling on the field.
The ruling was upheld. Really silly challenge by Dabo here. It wasn't really in question and he gave up his challenge for the entire game before 90 seconds was off the clock.
1-G at Cu03 Timeout Clemson, clock 13:38.
1-G at Cu03 PENALTY FS false start 5 yards to the CU8.
AGUAYO, R. kick attempt good.
Florida State 7, Clemson 0
Drive: 3 plays, 34 yards, TOP 01:21
AGUAYO, R. kickoff 64 yards to the CU1, S. WATKINS return 32 yards to the CU33 (JONES, C.). Poor lane discipline.
1-10 at Cu33 4-2-5 BOYD pass complete to S. WATKINS for 6 yards to the CU39 (JOYNER, L.). Clemson has a flare pass to Sammy packaged with a Zone Read and Tajh throws it to Watkins. Brooks reads the play perfectly and has outside leverage, but Sammy freezes him with a studder step and gets to the outside.
2-4 at Cu39 4-2-5 BOYD rush for 7 yards to the CU46, 1ST DOWN CU (EDWARDS, M.). This is a run all the way as Clemson is in a formation that is illegal to pass from. The tackle (who is not an eligible receiver) is the end man on the line of scrimmage. Clemson fakes a handoff to the empty side of the formation then runs buck sweep to the 4 receiver side of the formation. FSU is outflanked and outnumbered at the point of attack, but Mario Edwards Junior absorbs two blocks and still sheds them to make the tackle. This play goes for a bigger chunk of yards if he doesn't dominate a Clemson tight end.
1-10 at Cu46 4-2-5 BOYD pass incomplete to BRYANT. FSU is in some kind of man underneath zone coverage here. Play action to freeze the safety isolates Bryant on PJ Williams. Williams gets his hands on Bryant off the line and stays in his hip pocket on the go route. PJ is actually closer to catching this ball than the receiver as Bryant seems to give up on the route slightly.
2-10 at Cu46 3-3-5 McDOWELL rush for 5 yards to the FS49 (SMITH, TERR.). Clemson motions into a heavy pistol formation then runs a counter-trey. Good gap discipline and the back is met at the line of scrimmage but keeps his legs churning and pushes forward for a nice gain. Terrance Smith is in the right place but must meet the ball carrier with aggression and get him on the ground for a shorter gain.
3-5 at Fs49 4-2-5 BOYD pass incomplete to McDOWELL. Telvin fakes a blitz then backs out of it. Clemson is trying to sneak the back out on a delayed route, but Telvin reads and reacts to it wondefully. His short area burst is ridiculous.
4-5 at Fs49 PINION punt 37 yards to the FS12, fair catch by SHAW, K.. Pretty good defense overall.
Drive: 5 plays, 18 yards, TOP 01:34
1-10 at Fs12 21 I WILDER, J. rush for 9 yards to the FS21 (CHRISTIAN). Inside zone and a very nice cutback by Wilder.
2-1 at Fs21 21 I WILDER, J. rush for loss of 5 yards to the FS16 (CHRISTIAN). The weakside linebacker reads the zone run and shoots thegap to make the tackle in the backfield. Believe this should be Abrams responsibility.
3-6 at Fs16 10 gun WINSTON, J. pass complete to GREENE, R. for 8 yards to the FS24, 1ST DOWN FS (BLANKS). Nice job taking the free yards on the check down.
1-10 at Fs24 21 Bunch WINSTON, J. pass incomplete to WILDER, J.. Play action screen goes off of Wilder's hands and is nearly intercepted. If it's completed it's a big play.
2-10 at Fs24 10 gun WINSTON, J. pass complete to GREENE, R. for 13 yards to the FS37, 1ST DOWN FS (BREELAND). Curl flat and the curl is wide open.
1-10 at Fs37 11 WILDER, J. rush for 5 yards to the FS42 (R. SMITH;SHUEY). Great blocking as usual on the outside zone play.
2-5 at Fs42 10 gun WINSTON, J. pass complete to GREENE, R. for 3 yards to the FS45 (ROBINSON;R. SMITH). Neat little screen play but Christian Green whiffs on his block.
3-2 at Fs45 22 WILDER, J. rush for 3 yards to the FS48, 1ST DOWN FS (JARRETT). Outside zone and Wilder is met at the line but spins out for the first down.
1-10 at Fs48 21 I FREEMAN, D. rush for 9 yards to the CU43 (ROBINSON). Toss sweep. Getting toss sweep run on you at this level is an insult. FSU totally imposing its will at this point.
2-1 at Cu43 21 I ABRAM, C. rush for 3 yards to the CU40, 1ST DOWN FS (SHUEY). Fullback belly. Because why not?
1-10 at Cu40 21 WINSTON, J. pass incomplete to BENJAMIN, K. (BREELAND), QB hurry by CHRISTIAN. Trying to hit the go route to KB here. Pretty clear DPI goes uncalled.
2-10 at Cu40 11 gun WINSTON, J. pass complete to O'LEARY, N. for 21 yards to the CU19, 1ST DOWN FS (R. SMITH). Great throw on the option route to O'Leary. The angle and velocity necessary for this throw are very difficult. Might have been Winston's best throw of the night.
1-10 at Cu19 21 I FREEMAN, D. rush for no gain to the CU19 (D. WILLIAMS). Jackson gets beat by the DT who chases the play down from behind.
2-10 at Cu19 10 gun WINSTON, J. pass complete to SHAW, K. for 8 yards to the CU11 (BLANKS). Curl flat. Nice pass out in front of Shaw to allow him to get upfield.
3-2 at Cu11 Timeout Florida State, clock 05:04.
3-2 at Cu11 22 I WILDER, J. rush for no gain to the CU11 (ST. ANTHONY). FSU has a personnel advantage here as Clemson stays in their 4-3 package. Inside zone to the right. Clemson's Stephone Anthony reads it and knifes in from the backside where Wilder is trying to cut back. Chad Abrams needs to spot this quicker and get him blocked. This is the only failed short yardage play of the night and one of the few failed short yardage runs of the season.
4-2 at Cu11 AGUAYO, R. field goal attempt from 28 GOOD, clock 04:18.
Florida State 10, Clemson 0
Drive: 16 plays, 77 yards, TOP 07:39
AGUAYO, R. kickoff 39 yards to the CU26, fair catch by LEGGETT. With the two score lead, there's no reason to give Watkins a shot at breaking one. Plus there's always the chance that an up man who is unused to fielding the ball will do something dumb. Jimbo would like to see Aquayo kick it to the 20 instead of the 25, though.
1-10 at Cu26 4-2-5 BOYD rush for 4 yards to the CU30 (WILLIAMS, P.J.). Fake handoff to the back followed by a counter trey with Boyd as the ball carrier. Christian Jones does a nice job on the edge but Jernigan follows the fake and then gets double teamed out of the play creating a big cutback lane for Boyd.
2-6 at Cu30 3-3-5 BOYD pass incomplete to SECKINGER, QB hurry by JONES, C.. Jones is a standup LB on this play and both he and PJ Williams blitz from the boundary. Boyd is forced to rush the throw and the H-back can't hold on to the flat pass.
3-6 at Cu30 PENALTY FS offside 5 yards to the CU35. Mario Edwards Jr gets caught trying to time the snap based on the center's movement.
3-1 at Cu35 4-2-5 BOYD rush for 2 yards to the CU37, 1ST DOWN CU (GOLDMAN, E.). Clemson loves to get an extra blocker for short yardage situations by running Tajh inside the tackles. That's the plan here as they run QB power. Pretty good run fits by the defense but the Clemson OL gets good push and re-establishes the line of scrimmage 1-2 yards upfield.
1-10 at Cu37 4-2-5 BOYD pass complete to S. WATKINS for 18 yards to the FS45, 1ST DOWN CU (BROOKS, T.;RAMSEY, J.). Nicely designed play. Watkins and Seckinger and in close splits. Seckinger presses vertically to keep the safety upfield, the back on the flare pattern gets Telvin and Joyner to spread horizontally and Sammy just runs a little loop/slant and sits down in the void in the zone. Got the coverage they were looking for.
1-10 at Fs45 3-3-5 BOYD sacked for loss of 18 yards to the CU37 (JOYNER, L.), fumble by BOYD recovered by FS EDWARDS, M. at CU37, EDWARDS, M. for 37 yards to the CU0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 03:07. This is such a "hang loose, one of us is fixin' to score" play. FSU is rushing 5 but doesn't seem to be lined up properly before the snap. Nobody is over the slot receiver. The confusion seems to affect the Clemson OL as well. They have 6 guys to defend 5 rushers and still turn Lamarcus Joyner free to the quarterback. As happens so often with Lamarcus, Boyd can't seem to process how quickly Joyner is closing and hasn't secured the ball when he's hit. Mario Edwards wins the battle for the fumble and houses it. Terrence Brooks gets the block that secures the TD.
Drive: 5 plays, 11 yards, TOP 01:11
AGUAYO, R. kick attempt good.
Florida State 17, Clemson 0 Huge momentum play as Clemson was driving to make it a one score game.
AGUAYO, R. kickoff 60 yards to the CU5, out-of-bounds, CU ball on CU35. Jimbo indicated that Aguayo tried to put too much on this kick and ended up mishitting it.
1-10 at Cu35 4-2-5 BOYD pass incomplete to S. WATKINS. Killer, disciplined pass rush on this play. The pocket is collapsed from all sides and Boyd's mechanics are off resulting in the ball bouncing at Watkins' feet. This is what Jimbo and Saban call influencing the QB, even when you're not getting sacks.
2-10 at Cu35 3-3-5 BOYD pass complete to S. WATKINS for 14 yards to the CU49, 1ST DOWN CU (SMITH, TEL.). Slant to Watkins vs. Brooks in man coverage. Sammy makes a nifty move to break the tackle to the outside.
1-10 at Cu49 3-3-5 McDOWELL rush for no gain to the CU49 (BROOKS, T.). FSU brings the same blitz that resulted in the fumble and Brooks is untouched into the backfield to tackle the running back. Boyd has to see this and change the play.
2-10 at Cu49 3-3-5 BOYD pass incomplete to COOPER, QB hurry by MCALLISTER, D.. Great defense all around on this play. Good coverage on the back end and pressure up the middle from Jernigan forces Boyd to bail out of the pocket and throw it away.
3-10 at Cu49 3-3-5 BOYD pass incomplete to HUMPHRIES, PENALTY FS pass interference (JOYNER, L.) 16 yards to the FS35, 1ST DOWN CU, NO PLAY. Clemson fakes a screen to the running back and throws a seam route. The ball is underthrown and Joyner is in the way when the receiver tries to come back to the ball. If he's looking for the ball he has a good chance to intercept this.
1-10 at Fs35 4-2-5 McDOWELL rush for 9 yards to the FS26 (RAMSEY, J.;SMITH, TEL.). FSU is in a 2 deep safety look and Clemson runs a beautifully blocked buck sweep that gets a pulling guard on PJ Williams.
2-1 at Fs26 3-3-5 McDOWELL rush for 2 yards to the FS24, 1ST DOWN CU (JONES, C.). Clemson runs the exact same play and FSU defends it much better but Clemson gets just enough for the first down.
1-10 at Fs24 4-2-5 BROOKS rush for 3 yards to the FS21 (MCALLISTER, D.). This is an inverted veer play with a power or wham blocking scheme. Run fits are pretty good, but the Clemson OL gets enough push for the back to move the pile forward.
2-7 at Fs21 3-3-5 BOYD pass incomplete to STEWARD. Boundary corner blitz and Tajh Boyd and Mike Williams are not on the same page on the hot read. Williams runs a slant and Boyd seems to be expecting an out or a hitch.
3-7 at Fs21 3-2-6 BOYD pass complete to M. WILLIAMS for 18 yards to the FS3, 1ST DOWN CU (WILLIAMS, P.J.;BROOKS, T.). Neat play here. Clemson runs a rollout to the right with a snag concept. With the entire defense moving right, the snag route coming back to the middle of the field is wide open. Christian Jones is only a step or two away from intercepting this.
1-G at Fs03 6-2-3 BOYD pass incomplete to McDOWELL. Clemson tries to run a rocket screen to the back but Tajh throws it in the dirt at McDowell's feet.
2-G at Fs03 4-3 BOYD pass complete to S. WATKINS for 3 yards to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 00:51. Fake bubble screen with Sammy blocking for a second then running a slant. PJ's coverage isn't bad if the ball goes where it's supposed to out front of Watkins. Tajh throws it behind Sammy who shows ridiculous body control to get turned around and catch it behind him.
CATANZARO kick attempt good.
Florida State 17, Clemson 7
Drive: 11 plays, 65 yards, TOP 02:21
PINION kickoff 60 yards to the FS5, WILLIAMS, K. return 30 yards to the FS35 (BURRELL).
1-10 at Fs35 10 gun WINSTON, J. rush for 18 yards to the CU47, 1ST DOWN FS (ROBINSON). Jimbo was not pleased with Jameis on this play Kenny Shaw was open on a crossing route underneath, and Freeman was open heading to the flat as well. He also wanted Jameis to slide and avoid the hit.
1-10 at Cu47 10 gun FREEMAN, D. rush for 2 yards to the CU45 (J. WATSON). Tackle trap play is not blocked particularly well. Josue Matias in particular fails to get any movement on the DT.
Drive: 2 plays, 20 yards, TOP 01:19
Florida State 17, Clemson 7
