Florida State football spring practice report 4/3: plus scrimmage stats!

The 'Noles practiced in rain for the first time this spring.

Streeter Lecka

The Seminoles took the intramural fields to practice in rain for the first time this year. It's important for these guys to get reps in wet conditions because the likeliness of a rainy game in the state of Florida is obvious. While it wasn't coming down too hard during the media's allotted time, the radar says it's supposed to pick up over the next couple of hours. There were a few new developments out there today.

Fisher discusses the scrimmage for 10 minutes.

*Devonta Freeman and Christo Kourtzidis were not dressed out today. We won't know more until we get Jimbo after practice, but I would assume these occurred during Monday's scrimmage. I will say that they don't look bad and didn't require any medical equipment.

*Brewster was running hand drills with Kelvin Benjamin. These are the same drills he runs with the TEs. Teaches them to stay loose and catch the ball away from their bodies.

Offensive Line

*Austin Barron was back in pads today after what Jimbo described as a slight back strain. Barron was running as the 2nd team left guard again. I still see him snapping balls to Coker during QB warm-ups, but cross-training Barron is important because of depth issues on the line.

*According to Jimbo, Bobby Hart had a great scrimmage on Monday. I watched him pretty closely while I was there today and I think he's coming along. Also, coach Trickett will let guys know when he's not happy with them, and I haven't heard him get on Hart in a while.

Offense

*With Devonta Freeman not dressed out today, James Wilder was running with the 1s. The running backs usually share time with the 1s anyways, but Devonta is usually the first name called.

Defense

*There were running through some 5-2 sets today (though some would call these 3-4)

*This 5-2 consisted of these players from left to right: Eddie Goldman, Jacobbi McDaniel, Timmy Jernigan, Mario Edwards Jr., and Chris Casher. Some of these sets even added Dan Hicks from a shallow LB spot for a variation of the 6-1 or technically a variation on a 4-3 where you would usually add two LBs to play up on the line. These sets are clearly run stoppers.

*P.J. Williams and Eddie Goldman were consistently running with the 1s today. P.J. has been a consistent part of the nickel and the dime packages and I think he's done a really job. Starting to stand out.

Special Teams

*Here's what the 1st team punt formation looked like today: Mario Edwards Jr., Terrance Smith, Karlos Williams, Phillip Doumar, Reggie Northrup, and Telvin Smith on the line. Lamarcus Joyner out wide as a gunner, and Dan Hicks, Gio Newberry, and Christian Jones as the last defense for Cason Beatty.
