Florida State football practice report 08/08

Melina Vastola-US PRESSWIRE

7:30 update: Jimbo Fisher says that Willie Haulstead is academically ineligible and his career is over. Also, Jeremy Kerr has torn cartilage in his knee and will need surgery. He could return this season.

Running back Mario Pender was at practice in uniform Thursday for the Seminoles. But the Florida State running back was not in pads, because he must go through the mandatory two day acclimation period. Pender was waiting on a grade to post.

Red-shirt senior receiver Willie Haulstead was absent, and local radio host Jeff Cameron, of 97.9 ESPN Radio, reported that he is not currently on the team, but could earn his way back. That does not sound like a grades issue, but rather some sort of disciplinary issue.

Freshman offensive guard Ira Denson, who had his arm in a sling Wednesday, was without one Thursday. He was not participating, however.

Four-star offensive tackle recruit Frank Ragnow was visiting and watching practice.

Freshman offensive tackle Wilson Bell continued to work at left tackle, backing up red-shirt junior Cameron Erving.

**Remember that FSU tries out all sorts of lineups, and these are not at all predictive of who will play in the regular season.**

FSU continued to practice multiple-safety packages, as the coaching staff looks to take advantage of the ridiculous talent in the defensive backfield.

The nickel defense was DE Edwards, Jr., DT McAllister, DT Jernigan, DE Hicks, LB Jones, LB Smith, NB Joyner, CB Ramsey, CB Williams, S Brooks S Hunter. Note: Ronald Darby and Tyler Hunter continue to be limited as they come back from off-season injury.

Dime was DE Edwards, Jr., DT McAllister, DT Jernigan, DE/LB Jones, LB Smith, NB Joyner, DB Williams, CB Ramsey, CB Williams, S Brooks S Hunter. Note: Ronald Darby and Tyler Hunter continue to be limited as they come back from off-season injury.

Nick Waisome was working with the 2nd team today.

Guard Tre' Jackson destroyed guard Ruben Carter in a blocking drill, in which Jackson was very quick out of his stance, and Carter wasn't quick enough.

Freshmen Kermit Whitfield and Jesus "Bobo" Wilson worked at punt and kick returner.

Freshman Ryan Green was also working on Punt returns along with Whitfield, Wilson, Shaw, and Greene.

Our new interns, Spencer Wills and Stephen Fenech, also saw some things:

James Wilder Jr. seemed to be doing a great job pass blocking - held of Christian Jones a couple of times.

Devonta Freeman was in motion out of the halfback position.

Looks like the staff is really going to use receiver Kelvin Benjamin in space. Also saw a nice double reverse (possible read-reverse) with Kelvin Benjamin and Rashad Greene.

Lots of blitz packages including linebackers coming from different angles.

We'll get Jimbo after practice and I'll be adding some updates once we hear from him.

JIMBO:

Willie Haulstead is no longer on the team due to academic reasons.

Jimbo said freshman tight end Jeremy Kerry has a bruised knee. Had MRI and no ACL or MCL problems.  There isn't a time table, but he might have to have surgery on a little cartilage damage.

Ira Denson sprained his shoulder and should be back in the next couple of days.

Scooter Haggins and Ronald Darby have been easing there way back in to the day-to-day. Been a while since they've played football every day.

Jimbo also excited about some of the younger guys - really believes they can make an instant impact.
