Florida State football film review: Wake Forest 1st quarter

"With Wake Forest taking the air out of the ball, FSU only had the ball twice in this quarter. Defense is dominating, offense is clearly out of sync."

Every week we break down the result of the previous game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Wake Forest? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

Read to find out. Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

For other quarters, visit the film review section (All quarters up by tonight).

Share this on FB and tweet it using the buttons/icons on this page. If we don't get big numbers on these, they will stop. They take far too long to put together to have a small payoff.

D-D At Form Play Comment
1-10 at Wf35 FS ball on FS30.
Aguayo, R. kickoff 69 yards to the WF1, Henderson, T return 30 yards to the WF31 (Aguayo, R.).
1-10 at Wf31 4-2-5 Wolford, J at QB for Wake Forest.
1-10 at Wf31 4-2-5 Reynolds, O rush over left guard for no gain to the WF31 (Northrup, R.;Hollin, D.), clock 14:37. Inside zone with jet motion. Good job by Desmond Hollin and Eddie Goldman absorbing the combo blocks by the OL and not letting them get to the second level. Good aggressive fill by Levenberry on the play side forces the back to try and cut back where an unblocked Reggie Northrup is waiting.
2-10 at Wf31 4-2-5 Reynolds, O rush right for 2 yards to the WF33 (Northrup, R.;Andrews, N.), clock 14:02. Draw play catches Eddie Goldman in full on pass rush mode, but Desmond Hollin reads it and disengages, forcing the back to bounce it around the end. Good pursuit and gang tackling.
3-8 at Wf33 4-2-5 Wolford, J sideline pass complete to Scott, EJ for 8 yards to the WF41, 1ST DOWN WF (Ramsey, J.), clock 13:20. FSU shows blitz with press man, but ultimately only rushes four. Jacob Pugh at end and Mario Edwards Jr playing 3 tech run a twist and the pocket collapses but Edwards doesn't keep contain on the edge and allows Wolford to escape the pocket. Pretty good throw and catch on the edge, this kind of comeback is going to be open against press man if the play goes on too long.
1-10 at Wf41 4-2-5 Wolford, J sideline pass incomplete to Reynolds, O (Levenberry, E.), clock 13:00. Wake Forest has all 3 WRs to the field. The back and the TE head to the boundary side, running a flat route and and out respectively. EJ Levenberry reads it the whole way and has great inside out leverage on the back and breaks up the pass.
2-10 at Wf41 4-2-5 Scott, EJ rush right for loss of 5 yards to the WF36 (Featherston, L.), clock 12:40. Zone read to a back motioning across the formation. Wake Forest is trying to read Lorenzo Featherston here and he displays tremendous burst and length to bring the ball carrier down in the backfield.
3-15 at Wf36 4-2-5 Wolford, J sacked for loss of 5 yards to the WF31 (Goldman, E.), PENALTY FS face mask (Goldman, E.) 13 yards to the WF49, 1ST DOWN WF, NO PLAY. The Noles bring 5 on third and long and while the pocket holds up for a moment, it collapses quickly. Eddie Goldman breaks free and has a free shot on the QB, who ducks and allows Goldman to roll over his back. Goldman then reaches out and grabs the facemask to try and bring him down.
1-10 at Wf49 4-2-5 Robinson, I rush left for 1 yard to the 50 yardline (Featherston, L.). Blast play from Wake, with the back taking an open step like it's going to the outside, then cutting up inside with IZ blocking. DL stones the OL again and another nice fill by Levenberry. With the back bottled up, unblocked backside defenders are free to make the tackle.
2-9 at Wf50 4-2-5 Crump, J rush reverse for 2 yards to the FS48 (Williams, P.J.;Northrup, R.). Wake Forest actually has a reverse pass on here with the QB open in the flat. Mario Edwards Jr has contain as the backside DE and while he isn't able to make the tackle, he disrupts the timing of the pass, forcing the ball carrier to tuck it and giving time for the pursuit to rally.
3-7 at Fs48 4-2-5 Wolford, J sideline pass incomplete to Crump, J, clock 10:40. Play not shown on the broadcast.
4-7 at Fs48 Kinal, A punt 39 yards to the FS9, fair catch by Greene, R..
Drive: 8 plays, 21 yards, TOP 04:26 Very good defense against a woeful offense. Drive extended by the facemask penalty.
1-10 at Fs09 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 10:34.
1-10 at Fs09 Winston, J. at QB for Florida State.
1-10 at Fs09 21 Williams, K. rush left for 22 yards to the FS31, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds, clock 10:26. Wake Forest has their backers on the line of scrimmage, meaning they are unable to scrape over the top of the DL when FSU runs Outside Zone. Tremendous seal by Nick O'Leary, and a nice cut by Freddie Stevenson leading through the hole. If Wake is going to play their safeties deep all day, FSU will have a big day on the ground.
1-10 at Fs31 11 Gun Tight Winston, J. MR pass complete to Green, C. for 7 yards to the FS38 (Lee, M), clock 09:58. Curl flat to the field. Wake is playing press on the flat receiver but has a big cushion on the curl. Easy read and throw.
2-3 at Fs38 22 Williams, K. rush right for 6 yards to the FS44, 1ST DOWN FS (Wooding, A), clock 09:30. Toss sweep. This run is keyed by Freddie Stevenson who gets a solid block on a very aggressive Wake linebacker.
1-10 at Fs44 01 Gun Winston, J. sideline pass incomplete to Green, C., QB hurry by Chubb, B, clock 09:12. Missed assignment by the OL as Wake Forest runs an overload blitz against an empty backfield set. Jameis probably needs to change the protection to slide towards the blitz. The free blitzer forces Jameis to rush the throw.
2-10 at Fs44 11 Gun Winston, J. deep out pass incomplete to Greene, R., clock 09:08. Greene is open on the out route and Jameis just overthrows him. Great pass protection this time.
3-10 at Fs44 11 Gun Winston, J. middle pass intercepted by Noel, M at the WF40, Noel, M return 26 yards to the FS34 (Barron, A.). Very poor job by the OL on this play. Bobby Hart gets beat to the outside and Austin Barron waves his arms at a delayed inside blitzer. James tries to throw the option route to O'Leary while falling away, leading to a throw that is behind the receiver and popped up in the air for an interception. Virtually identical to his first interception vs. NC State. O'Leary also ran a really bad route.
Drive: 6 plays, 35 yards, TOP 01:36 Jameis and the OL showing a distinct lack of focus
1-10 at Fs34 WAKE FOREST drive start at 08:58.
1-10 at Fs34 4-2-5 Reynolds, O rush up middle for 4 yards to the FS30 (Featherston, L.;Andrews, N.), clock 08:42. Counter Trey from gun. The counter step by the back freezes the linebackers who are a little late filling the hole. Eddie Goldman does a great job of disengaging from the blocker and squatting in the hole, but misses the tackle.
2-6 at Fs30 4-2-5 Reynolds, O rush up middle for no gain to the FS30 (Edwards, M.), clock 08:22. Sprint draw is blown up when Mario Edwards reverses direction ridiculously quickly and makes an insane diving tackle. What a play.
3-6 at Fs30 4-2-5 Wolford, J sideline pass complete to Serigne, C for 11 yards to the FS19, 1ST DOWN WF, out-of-bounds (Hunter, T.), clock 07:52. Play not shown on the youtube replay.
1-10 at Fs19 4-2-5 Wolford, J screen pass complete to Robinson, I for 5 yards to the FS14, out-of-bounds (Darby, R.), clock 07:21. Play action bootleg fake, with the back who faked receiving the hand off running to the flat. Darby is in pretty good position, but needs to keep running and gain outside leverage when the back hesitates and looks like he may be cutting back. Turn him inside and let the pursuit handle it. By hesitating he allows the back to turn the corner for positive yardage.
2-5 at Fs14 4-2-5 Robinson, I rush left for loss of 4 yards to the FS18 (Featherston, L.), clock 06:46. Wake Forest tries to run the same counter trey play to the other side and leaves Lorenzo Featherston unblocked, who makes the tackle just after the handoff. Pretty sure this is a busted assignment by the Wake Forest TE who tries to pull through the hole along with 2 OL rather than blocking the backside DE.
3-9 at Fs18 4-2-5 Wolford, J sacked for loss of 9 yards to the FS27 (Edwards, M.), fumble by Wolford, J recovered by FS Featherston, L. at FS27. FSU is playing Mario Edwards at 3 tech in obvious passing situations and he just destroys the Wake Forest guard, getting into the backfield immediately and sacking the QB. Impressive pass rush all around as the pocket is uniformly collapsed around the QB, giving him no lanes to escape the pocket.
Drive: 6 plays, 7 yards, TOP 02:39 The FSU DL is completely overwhelming the Wake Forest OL.
1-10 at Fs27 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 06:19.
1-10 at Fs27 21 Cook, D. rush over left guard for 3 yards to the FS30 (Williams, H), clock 06:00. Inside zone. Cook makes the right cut, but gets caught up with Bobby Hart who has been pushed into the backfield, slowing up his momentum.
2-7 at Fs30 10 Gun Cook, D. rush TR for 5 yards to the FS35 (Allen, Z), clock 05:27. Toss play with outside zone blocking. Wake Forest has finally brought a safety into the box, so FSU runs outside to the other side of the field. Nice job by Cook of making a single cut and bursting upfield.
3-2 at Fs35 21 Twins Williams, K. rush over right guard for 4 yards to the FS39, 1ST DOWN FS (Lee, M;Janvion, R), clock 05:00. Inside zone. Good read by Williams and then just pure power as he runs over a linebacker in the hole. Really dominant, physical run by the OL.
1-10 at Fs39 21 Williams, K. rush over left end for 2 yards to the FS41, fumble forced by Banks, J, fumble by Williams, K. recovered by WF Chubb, B at FS41. Outside zone. Karlos makes a good cut but needs to follow his fullback and cut off of his block. Karlos does not have the ball tight to his rib cage and a Wake Forest defender is able to poke it out.
Drive: 4 plays, 14 yards, TOP 01:35 Just when FSU is starting to assert some physical dominance in the run game, another lack of focus error results in a turnover.
1-10 at Fs41 WAKE FOREST drive start at 04:44.
1-10 at Fs41 4-2-5 Wolford, J rush for 1 yard to the FS40 (Williams, P.J.), clock 04:14. QB draw and just a textbook open field tackle by PJ Williams.
2-9 at Fs40 4-2-5 Reynolds, O rush over left end for loss of 2 yards to the FS42 (Featherston, L.;Edwards, M.), clock 03:52. Counter trey again. Great fill by EJ Levenberry forces the back outside where Mario Edwards is waiting.
3-11 at Fs42 4-2-5 Wolford, J WS pass complete to Terry, B for 22 yards to the FS20, 1ST DOWN WF (Hunter, T.;Brutus, L.), clock 03:21. Unfortunately the camera angles don't tell us where the inside pursuit was on this bubble screen, but it does show two defensive backs getting walled to the outside. They need to bracket the receiver inside and out.
1-10 at Fs20 4-2-5 Robinson, I rush up middle for loss of 3 yards to the FS23 (Andrews, N.;Edwards, M.), clock 02:51. FSU blitzes Nate Andrews off the edge and he's completely unblocked on this inside zone play. The QB has to see this and check out of it.
2-13 at Fs23 4-2-5 Wolford, J WS pass complete to Terry, B for 6 yards to the FS17 (Ramsey, J.;Levenberry, E.), clock 02:16. Bubble screen to the field and EJ Levenberry is very slow to close from inside out, allowing a 6 yard gain.
3-7 at Fs17 4-2-5 Wolford, J WS pass complete to Terry, B for loss of 1 yard to the FS18 (Williams, P.J.), clock 01:42. Third straight bubble screen from Wake, this time with the H back coming out of the backfield to get the block. PJ Williams and Lamarcus Brutus read it all the way and contain the receiver while the pursuit from the inside arrives.
4-8 at Fs18 Weaver, M field goal attempt from 36 GOOD, clock 01:20.
Wake Forest 3, Florida State 0
Drive: 7 plays, 23 yards, TOP 03:28 One poorly defended screen, but otherwise another dominating drive.
Centers, A kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, Whitfield, K. return 25 yards to the FS25 (Okonye, J).
1-10 at Fs25 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 01:16.
1-10 at Fs25 10 Gun Winston, J. deep out pass incomplete to Greene, R., clock 01:10. Smash to the boundary and Greene is open on the corner route and Jameis way overthrows him. He is clearly not in rhythm at all right now.
2-10 at Fs25 10 Gun Winston, J. WS pass complete to Greene, R. for loss of 2 yards to the FS23 (Johnson, K), clock 00:54. Tunnel screen. Bobo Wilson does not get the corner blocked and the play loses two yards.
3-12 at Fs23 11 Gun Trips Winston, J. flag pass complete to Greene, R. for 24 yards to the FS47, 1ST DOWN FS (Janvion, R), clock 00:23. Scissors concept with a whip route underneath. Rashad is wide open on the corner. Jameis is late and high with this throw, allowing the defender to get back into the play and forcing Greene to jump for the catch.
1-10 at Fs47 PENALTY FS false start (Erving, C.) 5 yards to the FS42, clock 00:06.
Drive: 3 plays, 17 yards, TOP 04:35
Wake Forest 3, Florida State 0 With Wake Forest taking the air out of the ball, FSU only had the ball twice in this quarter. Defense is dominating, offense is clearly out of sync.
