Florida State football film review: Louisville 1st quarter

New, 27 comments

Florida State's offense moved the ball OK in the first quarter, but it began very backed up in its own end.

Every week we break down the result of the previous game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Louisville? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

Read to find out. Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

For other quarters, visit the film review section (All quarters up by tonight).

Share this on FB and tweet it using the buttons/icons on this page. If we don't get big numbers on these, they will stop. They take far too long to put together to have a small payoff.

D-D At Form Play Analysis
Aguayo, R. kickoff 65 yards to the LOU0, touchback.
1-10 at Lou25 4-2-5 Gardner, W. deep pass complete to Parker, D. for 71 yards to the FS4, 1ST DOWN LOU (Hunter, T.). Broadcast never showed the actual route from Parker. Looks like it may have been double posts and Hunter bit on the inside post and let the outside one get behind him. Inexcusable bust, but he redeems himself somewhat by chasing Parker down short of the goal line and giving the defense the opportunity to limit the damage.

1-G at Fs04 4-2-5 Dyer,M. rush left for loss of 3 yards to the FS7 (Thomas, M.). Outside zone. Mario Edwards is playing 4 technique and absolutely destroys the guard, meeting the back 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage. The back does break the tackle but the rest of the defense is waiting on him.
2-G at Fs07 4-2-5 Gardner, W. CU pass complete to Christian, G. for 6 yards to the FS1 (Williams, P.J.). Mesh concept underneath indicates Louisville is expecting man coverage. FSU is in zone and PJ Williams has nobody in his area. Good job of finding work and attacking the crosser short of the goal line as he enters the flat zone even if he did slip a bit.
3-G at Fs01 6-2-4 Dyer,M. rush up middle for loss of 1 yard to the FS2 (Williams, P.J.). FSU shows a bear front (linemen heads up over the center and guards) vs. Louisville's 22 personnel. Derrick Mitchell whips the RG and gets into the backfield, meeting the back along with PJ Williams coming in unblocked off the edge. Great job by the DL on these two goal line runs. Totally collapsing the interior of the DL.

4-G at Fs02 4-2-5 Gardner, W. middle pass incomplete to Christian, G.. Interesting formation from Louisville. They have 8 men on the line of scrimmage, 5 of them to one side. The "tackle" to the short side of the form is a tight end, who blocks on the play action fake then reverses field into a drag route on the bootleg. Great discipline by FSU to not lose track of any receivers despite the formation disguise and play action. Great instincts on display by Matthew Thomas.
Drive: 5 plays, 73 yards, TOP 02:20 Tremendous defense on the goal line after an inexcusable coverage bust.
1-10 at Fs02 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 12:40.
1-10 at Fs02 21 Twins Williams, K. rush up middle for 3 yards to the FS5 (Sample,J.). FSU tips their hand on this run by formation. Rashad Greene is on the line covering up O'Leary, who therefore cannot go down field without drawing a penalty. Louisville has 9 players within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage to defend the inside zone run and outnumbers the defense. Karlos cuts it back and trucks the unblocked safety for three yards.
2-7 at Fs05 21 Pony Winston, J. deep pass incomplete to Wilson, J.. Winston identifies man coverage on Bobo Wilson and tries to hit him on the fade, but overthrows it.
3-7 at Fs05 11 Gun Winston, J. middle pass complete to Greene, R. for 10 yards to the FS15, 1ST DOWN FS (Gaines,C.). Louisville brings a double A gap blitz and FSU appears to be in a BOB protection which has the linemen take the backs while the tailback/h-back take on the blitzing backers. Williams is aligned with the tackle and O'Leary is in an H-back alignment directly behind the tackle as well, so neither is in a good position to block A gap blitzers and can only get partial blocks on them. Winston slides to his left and places the ball directly on Greene the second he makes his break. This is a high quality NFL caliber play on both ends of the throw.
1-10 at Fs15 11 Gun Williams, K. rush up middle for 6 yards to the FS21 (Kelsey, K.). Packaged play, inside zone with a bubble. Give to the back. Cam Erving gets beat inside initially but then rides the defender playside, allowing Karlos Williams to cut behind him. Very nice subtle move in the hole gets him past the linebacker for a nice gain on first down. This is the kind of play where Williams is probably tackled for a loss at the beginning of the year.
2-4 at Fs21 11 Gun Winston, J. sideline pass complete to Rudolph, T. for 8 yards to the FS29, 1ST DOWN FS (Kelsey, K.;Holliman, G.). Packaged play again, this time power with a bubble. Louisville is blitzing the slot defender, leaving only 2 defenders over the two receivers. Jameis throws the bubble and Rudolph displays impressive burst by cutting inside Bobo Wilson's block and still getting 8 yards.
1-10 at Fs29 11 Gun Winston, J. CU pass complete to O'Leary, N. for 5 yards to the FS34 (Gaines,C.). Louisville blitzing off the edge again and Winston finds O'Leary behind the blitz on a stick route.
2-5 at Fs34 11 Gun Williams, K. rush up middle for 8 yards to the FS42, 1ST DOWN FS (Mauldin, L.;Sample,J.). Inside zone and Ryan Hoefeld gets a really nice seal on the nose. Good push overall and great job by Williams of making himself small and getting through a narrow crease.
1-10 at Fs42 11 Gun Cook, D. rush up middle for no gain to the FS42 (Mauldin, L.;Dubose, B.). Inside zone again and Josue Matias gets shove into Dalvin Cook's path, destroying the play.
2-10 at Fs42 01 Gun Winston, J. sideline pass incomplete to Rudolph, T., QB hurry by Kelsey, K.. Empty backfield means there's no one to pick up the extra edge rusher and Winston must beat him with a throw. He puts the ball in Rudolph's hands on an out route and Rudolph drops it. Gotta have that.
3-10 at Fs42 PENALTY FS false start (Williams, K.) 5 yards to the FS37.
3-15 at Fs37 10 Gun Tight Winston, J. pass incomplete to Williams, K., QB hurry by Mount, D.. Bobby Hart gets completely whipped, allowing pressure in Winston's face. This disrupts the timing of the screen pass and allows the defense to react. Probably wasn't going for a first down anyway.
4-15 at Fs37 Beatty, C. punt 53 yards to the LOU10, Quick, J. return 0 yards to the LOU10 (Andrews, N.), PENALTY LOU delay of game (Quick, J.) 5 yards to the LOU5, 1st and 10, LOU ball on LOU5.
Drive: 10 plays, 35 yards, TOP 03:56 Positive drive to dig it out from your own 2, give the defense a rest and take the crowd out of it a bit.
1-10 at Lou05 LOUISVILLE drive start at 08:44.
1-10 at Lou05 4-2-5 Dyer,M. rush right for 7 yards to the LOU12 (Andrews, N.;Northrup, R.). Matthew Thomas gets too far upfield, creating a lane on the outside zone play. He and Walker have to squeeze this gap together.
2-3 at Lou12 4-2-5 Dyer,M. rush up middle for 7 yards to the LOU19, 1ST DOWN LOU (Northrup, R.). Louisville traps Mario Edwards Junior and Matthew Thomas tries to step around the tight end's block instead of taking it on in the hole.
1-10 at Lou19 4-2-5 Gardner, W. middle pass incomplete to Quick, J., QB hurry by Goldman, E.. This is a neat play. It's a shallow cross/drive concept with drag routes from each side creating a mesh concept as well. Good vs. both man and zone. Not bad coverage on the drive route by Matthew Thomas. Eddie Goldman completely whips the guard and forces a quick throw.
2-10 at Lou19 4-2-5 Radcliff, B. rush left for 6 yards to the LOU25 (Northrup, R.;Hunter, T.). Mario Edwards Jr gets rolled up on from behind by the OL engaged with Eddie Goldman, creating a crease for this run. Matthew Thomas actually does a good job squeezing the hole on this run.
3-4 at Lou25 4-2-5 Gardner, W. CU pass incomplete to Parker, D.. Nice tight coverage and good pressure. QB does get off a pretty good throw to the outside receiver running a hitch, but he drops it.
4-4 at Lou25 Johnson, R. punt 44 yards to the FS31, downed.
Drive: 5 plays, 20 yards, TOP 02:03
1-10 at Fs31 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 06:41.
1-10 at Fs31 11 Pistol Trey Winston, J. sacked for loss of 11 yards to the FS20 (Dubose, B.). Play action with a pulling guard. Smash concept to the field. Winston starts to throw it to Rudolph on the corner, but then pulls it down and eats it as a defender gets free. Pass protection honestly isn't bad here. Hoefeld does end up on his backside when he's tripped by another DL's legs, but holds up long enough for the routes to develop and does a good job not holding. Jameis had a chance to throw and just didn't feel comfortable letting it go for some reason.
2-21 at Fs20 11 Gun Winston, J. crossing pass incomplete to O'Leary, N. (Burgess, J.). Winston tries to hit O'Leary on the out and the linebacker cuts underneath and nearly picks it off. Gotta chalk this one up as a great defensive play. The linebacker was not in position to break up this pass at all when Jameis throws it.
3-21 at Fs20 11 Gun Williams, K. rush up middle for 10 yards to the FS30 (Burgess, J.). The first power run of the night is blocked extremely well, but is obviously unlikely to convert a first down here.
4-11 at Fs30 Beatty, C. punt 54 yards to the LOU16, fair catch by Quick, J..
Drive: 3 plays, minus 1 yards, TOP 01:31 Not a good series from Winston.
1-10 at Lou16 LOUISVILLE drive start at 05:10.
1-10 at Lou16 4-2-5 Gardner, W. sideline pass complete to Scott, L. for 11 yards to the LOU27, 1ST DOWN LOU, out-of-bounds (Darby, R.). Lack of communication here. Darby carries the vertical receiver deep and nobody covers the flat. Think that's on Reggie Northrup.
1-10 at Lou27 4-2-5 Gardner, W. deep pass incomplete to Quick, J.. Play action over route. The receiver gets a step of separation on PJ Williams at the very end of the route, but the throw is off target.
2-10 at Lou27 3-4 Dyer,M. rush left for loss of 1 yard to the LOU26 (Edwards, M.). Counter Trey and Mario Edwards Jr just demolishes the first pulling guard and makes the tackle in the backfield. Goodness.
3-11 at Lou26 4-2-5 Gardner, W. CU pass complete to Parker, D. for 9 yards to the LOU35 (Darby, R.;Ramsey, J.). Pin concept to the field with a hitch from the slot and a bench route from the outside receiver. Great job of bracketing Parker and tackling him short of the first down.
4-2 at Lou35 Johnson, R. punt 31 yards to the FS34, fair catch by Greene, R..
Drive: 4 plays, 19 yards, TOP 02:00
1-10 at Fs34 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 03:10.
1-10 at Fs34 21 Bunch Cook, D. rush up middle for 2 yards to the FS36 (Kelsey, K.). Inside zone with a designed cutback. There's actually a lane where the blockers are flowing to and Cook gets crossed up trying to cutback again.
2-8 at Fs36 11 Gun Winston, J. rush OR for 20 yards to the LOU44, 1ST DOWN FS (Sample,J.). Louisville shows a double blitz off the edge, then backs out of it presnap. The backwards momentum of the alley defenders at the snap make them completely vulnerable to getting sealed vs. the speed option. This is either amazing play calling or really good fortune. Pregnant lady scramble for 20 yards.
1-10 at Lou44 10 Gun Winston, J. sideline pass incomplete, QB hurry by Kelsey, K.. Jameis has all day to throw but can't find anybody to throw to. Can't see the routes to determine if anyone is open. Eventually the protection breaks down and Winston has to scramble and throw it away. Think Jimbo wanted a shot here after the explosive run.
2-10 at Lou44 10 Gun Trips Cook, D. rush right for 2 yards to the LOU42, out-of-bounds (Sample,J.). FSU has a numbers advantage to the boundary and Jameis checks into OZ to that side. Bobby Hart gets beat inside and is unable to set the edge.
3-8 at Lou42 10 Gun Trips Winston, J. deep pass incomplete to Wilson, J.. FSU has Bobo Wilson behind the coverage and Winston just flat misses him.
4-8 at Lou42 Beatty, C. punt 42 yards to the LOU0, touchback.
Drive: 5 plays, 24 yards, TOP 02:11
1-10 at Lou20 LOUISVILLE drive start at 00:59.
1-10 at Lou20 3-4 Gardner, W. slant pass complete to Parker, D. for 11 yards to the LOU31, 1ST DOWN LOU (Williams, P.J.). FSU looks to be in true C2, or 2 Trap (corner sinking to a buzz zone rather than pressing and covering the flats) and Louisville is able to hit the slant underneath it. FSU was playing 3-4 with Mario Edwards Jr at Sam and Jalen Ramsey at safety. Nate Andrews was not on the field.
1-10 at Lou31 3-4 Dyer,M. rush up middle for 17 yards to the LOU48, 1ST DOWN LOU (Ramsey, J.). Eddie Goldman gets pushed out of his gap by a double team on an inside zone run. Reggie Northrup is in position but gets held by the OL climbing to the second level.
Drive: 2 plays, 28 yards, TOP 03:46
