Florida State football film review: Louisville 3rd quarter

New, 68 comments

Florida State reduces the lead from 14 to 3.

Every week we break down the result of the previous game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Louisville? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

Read to find out. Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

For other quarters, visit the film review section (All quarters up by tonight).

Share this on FB and tweet it using the buttons/icons on this page. If we don't get big numbers on these, they will stop. They take far too long to put together to have a small payoff.

Please do ask any questions you may have in the comment section!

D-D At Form Play Analysis
2-5 at Lou23 Start of 3rd quarter, clock 15:00, LOU ball on LOU35.
Drive: 1 plays, 5 yards, TOP 00:33
Wallace, J. kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, touchback.
1-10 at Fs25 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 15:00.
1-10 at Fs25 11 gun Winston, J. deep pass intercepted by Holliman, G. at the FS45, Holliman, G. return 14 yards to the FS31, fumble forced by Winston, J., fumble by Holliman, G. recovered by FS Rudolph, T. at FS40. Poor throw from Jameis. Jimbo says he should have hit the drag on the checkdown. Got greedy here. Take what they're giving you. Really fortunate to knock the ball out and recover it. Basically advanced fifteen yards. God's Seminoles. Jameis needs to throw this farther right and deeper. Just missed the throw bad.
Drive: 1 plays, 0 yards, TOP 00:17
1-10 at Fs40 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 14:43.
1-10 at Fs40 11 gun Williams, K. rush up middle for 9 yards to the FS49 (Sample,J.). Counter, well blocked, both 54 and 35 do a great job pulling and Karlos doesn't touch anyone until he's 6 yards past the line of scrimmage, where he lowers his shoulder and drops the boom, getting some extra yards in the process
2-1 at Fs49 11 gun Williams, K. rush up middle for no gain to the FS49 (Rankins, S.;Burgess, J.). Outside zone right, Tre Jackson misses a cut block and Karlos gets hit at the line and stood up. Tre has to make the cut here instead of just trying to reach this backer from a weird angle in space.
3-1 at Fs49 21 I Williams, K. rush up middle for no gain to the FS49 (Richardson, J.). Inside zone, 4i technique beats Matias, who Jimbo says overstepped his block and got beat backside. They'd have made this if the block gets made.
4-1 at Fs49 GL Williams, K. rush up middle for no gain to the FS49 (Brown,K.;Dubose, B.). Stevenson needs to put more punch on this guy. Gets stood up behind the LOS and Karlos is stuck. Nowhere to go. Abram makes this block, and so does Pryor. Not having a good fullback hurt here. Let's put some weight on this dude. Tip your cap at the UL LB - guy came in and smashed Stevenson, good play from him.

Drive: 4 plays, 9 yards, TOP 01:15 Mental mistakes on the drive. Your guards, seniors, make mistakes on second and third down, and then a great physical play from their backer ends it.
1-10 at Fs49 LOUISVILLE drive start at 13:28.
1-10 at Fs49 425 Dyer,M. rush up middle for 2 yards to the FS47 (Northrup, R.). Noles playing 425 against a 2 TE set. Inside run and UL gets little push. Good gap discipline from Noles. Dyer may have missed a cutback here. Solid defense
2-8 at Fs47 425 Gardner, W. deep pass complete to Parker, D. for 31 yards to the FS16, 1ST DOWN LOU, out-of-bounds (Williams, P.J.). Single coverage on outside, Gardner tosses it up to his star receiver. Beautifully thrown ball on outside shoulder, great thrown and catch. Tip your cap. Just a good play. Jimbo says "play a lot of man and you're gonna get beat". Parker does a good job keeping PJ at bay, too. Savvy.
1-10 at Fs16 425 Dyer,M. rush up middle for no gain to the FS16 (Thomas, M.). Great defense all around. Eddie Goldman makes his man look a fool on this play. Backers do a good job filling.
2-10 at Fs16 425 Gardner, W. pass incomplete to Parker, D. (Hunter, T.). Not sure what the world Gardner was doing here. Noles backers didn't switch well on mesh underneath, back was slipping free, but Gardner decides to try to win the drive on second down. No pressure and he throws it right at a waiting Hunter who jumps a crosser. Hunter doesn't catch it and Ramsey narrowly misses snatching the tip. You'd like to see Hunter catch this.
3-10 at Fs16 416 Gardner, W. pass incomplete to Rogers,E., QB hurry by Featherston, L.. Louisville tries a screen but Featherston is just so fast. I don't recall which player says he takes two steps and he's moved ten yards, but it's true. Incredible. Single handedly blew up this screen. This was actually a double screen and Noles had playside covered well, Gardner tried to hit backside but pressure and coverage made it tough.
4-10 at Fs16 Wallace, J. field goal attempt from 33 GOOD, clock 11:22.
LOUISVILLE 24, FLORIDA STATE 7
Drive: 6 plays, 33 yards, TOP 02:06 Good drive on defense from the Noles. Great throw and catch gets them in field goal range and otherwise they're shut down.
Wallace, J. kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, Wilson, J. return 26 yards to the FS26 (Milton, M.). Jimbo's happy with how hard Jesus is running returns
1-10 at Fs26 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 11:22.
1-10 at Fs26 11 gun Winston, J. sideline pass complete to Williams, K. for 5 yards to the FS31 (Floyd, T.). Flare uncovered and Jameis takes what they give him quickly.
2-5 at Fs31 11 gun Williams, K. rush up middle for 1 yard to the FS32 (Dubose, B.). Counter, Hart gets out leveraged and Hoefeld's man is able to keep an arm free and grab him.
3-4 at Fs32 01 gun empty Winston, J. deep pass complete to Rudolph, T. for 68 yards to the LOU0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 09:51. Empty set forces Louisville to change their coverage, per Jimbo, and Noles run an alternate route that gets Rudolph open. Jimbo says the safety should've carried Rudolph rather than going underneath where Rashad was running post. Alignment causes issue for UL here also. Trips with Rashad as #3 has been used in previous games to get Rashad matched up on a safety/backer/nickelback. This time it's an LB, and the safety vacates his deep middle, leaving Rudolph home free - DB covering him expected safety help. Hi/Lo play to attack MOF - post/go with drag underneath. Jameis makes good throw and it's a walk in TD. Jimbo says it's the same play that was picked off on first play from scrimmage in second half.

Aguayo, R. kick attempt good.
LOUISVILLE 24, FLORIDA STATE 14
Drive: 3 plays, 74 yards, TOP 01:31 Great play call helps cause bust, off to the races.
Aguayo, R. kickoff 65 yards to the LOU0, touchback.
1-10 at Lou25 LOUISVILLE drive start at 09:51.
1-10 at Lou25 425 Gardner, W. crossing pass complete to Standberry, C. for 12 yards to the LOU37, 1ST DOWN LOU, out-of-bounds (Hunter, T.), PENALTY FS personal foul (Hunter, T.) 15 yards to the FS48, 1ST DOWN LOU. After some first down runs, Petrino goes for a shot play with play action and 7 man protection. Gardner looks downfield but deep shots covered, goes for crosser underneath after Hunter is rubbed out of play a bit. Hunter gets hit with a ticky tack face mask, but you can't do that.
1-10 at Fs48 1st and 10.
1-10 at Fs48 425 Gardner, W. crossing pass incomplete to DeLa Cruz, K. (Goldman, E.). Gardner sees a matchup advantage - Thomas the backer (with a bum knee) covering the slot man. Great pressure from Walker. Forces Gardner to get rid of it quick and Gardner puts it in the dirt.
2-10 at Fs48 425 Dyer,M. rush up middle for no gain to the FS48 (Goldman, E.;Mitchell, D.). Goldman and Mitchell both do a great job here. Goldman is incredible. Goldman rips past his man and hits Dyer hard. Mitchell helps finish it off.
3-10 at Fs48 416 Gardner, W. slant pass incomplete to Parker, D. (Darby, R.). 5 man pressure with backside corner blitz. Gardner throws the slant, but Darby had awesome coverage, gets in front of the slant and nearly picks it off.
4-10 at Fs48 Johnson, R. punt 48 yards to the FS0, touchback.
Drive: 4 plays, 27 yards, TOP 01:18
1-10 at Fs20 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 08:33.
1-10 at Fs20 11 gun Winston, J. sideline pass complete to Cook, D. for 12 yards to the FS32, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Sample,J.). Curl/flat. Cook wide open in the flats. Jimbo starts saying it here - when you take what's open underneath, opens up plays downfield.
1-10 at Fs32 11 gun Winston, J. sideline pass complete to Cook, D. for 12 yards to the FS44, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Sample,J.). Same play. Same result. Rashad barely does more than serve as a pick here.
1-10 at Fs44 11 gun Winston, J. sideline pass complete to Cook, D. for 10 yards to the LOU46, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Mauldin, L.). Zone blitz from UL, backer and corner blitz backside from field. Winston recognizes it, scrambles and does a heck of a job avoiding the sack and dumping it off. Way to not take a negative play.
1-10 at Lou46 11 gun Winston, J. CU pass complete to O'Leary, N. for 6 yards to the LOU40 (Kelsey, K.;Sample,J.). Curl/flat, Winston hits O'Leary quickly on the curl.
2-4 at Lou40 11 gun Cook, D. rush up middle for 40 yards to the LOU0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 06:17. Power to field (left), Cook cuts wide left, and Jimbo says it best: "it's why Dalvin Cook is Dalvin Cook". Changes the numbers on the scoreboard. Great blocking overall, good downfield blocking. Jimbo praises Hoefeld's back block (down block) yet Hoefeld really doesn't block anyone here, which is strange. 1-arm Cam Erving can't get his down block fully which screws with Jackson's angle, and forces Cook to make a ridiculous cut. Great acceleration, too.

Aguayo, R. kick attempt good.
LOUISVILLE 24, FLORIDA STATE 21
Drive: 5 plays, 80 yards, TOP 02:16 Great drive top to bottom. Take what they give you is the theme. Dalvin Cook shows he's special.
Aguayo, R. kickoff 65 yards to the LOU0, touchback.
1-10 at Lou25 LOUISVILLE drive start at 06:17.
1-10 at Lou25 425 Gardner, W. sideline pass incomplete to Rogers,E.. Gardner *Triple* clutched this comeback route and still throws it high. Good defense from Ramsey.
2-10 at Lou25 425 Dyer,M. rush up middle for 9 yards to the LOU34 (Williams, P.J.). Well blocked IZ by Louisville, Mitchell misses a tackle in the hole here. This was a fumble, to me. But frankly, it wasn't ever going to be overturned either way. No great angles.
3-1 at Lou34 GL Dyer,M. rush left for loss of 2 yards to the LOU32 (Hollin, D.). Noles just dominate at the point of attack all the way across the line. Northrup finds a way to knife through and catch Dyer, Hollin finishes it off. Great defense, Jimbo pleased with how they filled gaps.

4-3 at Lou32 Johnson, R. punt 31 yards to the FS37, fair catch by Greene, R..
Drive: 3 plays, 7 yards, TOP 01:48 Massive 3 and out force here.
1-10 at Fs37 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 04:29.
1-10 at Fs37 11 gun Winston, J. deep pass incomplete to O'Leary, N.. Jimbo says this is "inches off the hands" of O'Leary, but it looks to me like NOL just loses the ball in the air a little bit. Probably should try to catch it over his shoulder or in front of him rather than above him. No problem with throw. Nick needs to catch this.
2-10 at Fs37 11 gun Winston, J. crossing pass complete to Wilson, J. for 6 yards to the FS43 (Gaines,C.). Great protection, Bobo wide open on the crosser. Similar curl/flat to plays Cook took on previous drive and Louisville finally started covering the flat.
3-4 at Fs43 11 gun Winston, J. sideline pass complete to Cook, D. for 6 yards to the FS49, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Sample,J.). Then this time they didn't cover the flat, preferring to crowd the box. LB Kelsey made a mistake, his teammate was clearly unhappy with him. Same play works. Jimbo content to see Jameis take what they give.
1-10 at Fs49 11 gun Winston, J. crossing pass incomplete to Wilson, J.. Wilson need sto run this a little harder. He's slowed up by zone defender being very shallow.
2-10 at Fs49 01 empty gun Winston, J. CU pass complete to O'Leary, N. for 19 yards to the LOU32, 1ST DOWN FS (Kelsey, K.). TE screen from empty. This is maybe second or third time this play has been run. Once against Clemson. REally good play call, O'Leary doing some really nice running to get some extra yards. I like putting the ball in playmakers' hands.
1-10 at Lou32 11 gun Cook, D. rush up middle for 17 yards to the LOU15, 1ST DOWN FS (Brown,K.). Power, Tre gets stuck when 75 struggles to hold his down block. Dalvin gets around it, then jump cuts away from hole, leaving UL defender behind, and finds green grass for a while. Just an amazing jump cut. This kid is awesome to watch.
1-10 at Lou15 11 gun Williams, K. rush left for 1 yard to the LOU14, out-of-bounds (Floyd, T.). Package play, counter/bubble. Bubble covered, Louisville does a good job flowing to the run and filling gaps. Maybe if O'Leary gets a cut they can get some yards here, but UL did good job here.
2-9 at Lou14 11 gun Winston, J. middle pass incomplete to O'Leary, N.. Jameis just misses this throw. Announcers were saying pressure got to him, but it looks more to me that he was just trying to time the throw so O'Leary would be able to turn around and move to it. Sort of a weird play. Not sure they got spacing right here.
3-9 at Lou14 11 gun Winston, J. sideline pass complete to O'Leary, N. for 14 yards to the LOU0, clock 01:16, PENALTY FS holding (Hart, B.) 10 yards to the LOU24, NO PLAY. Jimbo admits the hold here. Nullifies a good play where O'Leary made himself open deep.
3-19 at Lou24 11 gun Winston, J. sideline pass incomplete to Greene, R. (Floyd, T.). Rashad needs to make this catch. This is on him. Throw was fine. Hits him right in the hands. Rare drop in a key situation. Looks like 3 verts, but in compressed space.
4-19 at Lou24 Aguayo, R. field goal attempt from 41 MISSED - wide right, spot at LOU24, clock 01:03. Like Jimbo says "Roberto is human".
Drive: 10 plays, 39 yards, TOP 03:26 Just a couple inches from some big chunk plays on this drive. Just a hair off here.
1-10 at Lou24 LOUISVILLE drive start at 01:03.
1-10 at Lou24 425 Dyer,M. rush up middle for 3 yards to the LOU27 (Lyons, T.). Broadcast cuts out most of this play. Lyons fills gap well, stops Dyer.
2-7 at Lou27 425 Gardner, W. crossing pass complete to Parker, D. for 9 yards to the LOU36, 1ST DOWN LOU (Andrews, N.;Northrup, R.). Calling personnel 425, but Terrell Lyons is playing LB here. And it's his man who is completely wide open here. He/PJ don't switch and both follow guy stemming vertical. Parker wide open on crosser, Northrup pops him then Parker jaws at him.
Drive: 2 plays, 12 yards, TOP 02:27
LOUISVILLE 24, FLORIDA STATE 21
4th Quarter Pretty good quarter overall. Good execution on both sides of the ball. Jameis does a good job taking what they give him. Offense operates basically exclusively out of 11 personnel. I think we'll see that going forward. The receivers interchange all the time - 3/15/80 all go between slot and wide and do good jobs doing so.
