Florida State football film review: Georgia Tech 1st Quarter

Every week we break down the result of the previous game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Georgia Tech? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

Read to find out. Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

For other quarters, visit the film review section (All quarters up by tonight).

Share this on FB and tweet it using the buttons/icons on this page. If we don't get big numbers on these, they will stop. They take far too long to put together to have a small payoff.

Please do ask any questions you may have in the comment section!

D-D At Form Play Analysis
1-10 at Fs35 GT ball on GT35.
Butker, H. kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, touchback.
1-10 at Fs25 11 Pistol Trips Cook, D. rush for 5 yards to the FS30 (Johnson, I.). Pin and pull zone, or hook blocking as FSU refers to it. Blocked perfectly. The GT safety flies up aggressively and keeps the gain to just 5 yards.
2-5 at Fs30 11 Cook, D. rush for 1 yard to the FS31 (Gamble, P.). OZ. Nicely stretched out by the GT defense. Tre Jackson is unable to get up to the second level to get the middle linebacker.
3-4 at Fs31 10 Gun Winston, J. pass incomplete to Wilson, J.. FSU has Rashade Greene running a pivot/whip route underneath, with a Dig behind it. Greene draws the underneath coverage and the dig is wide open. Jameis throws to the hole in the zone...if he leads Wilson any further the middle linebacker will have a chance to pick it off. Jameis throws it early enough that Bobo should be able to throttle down and adjust to it but for some reason does not and tries to stop at the last second, losing his footing. Speculation: The fog and the umpire directly in between Bobo and Winston may have prevented him from picking up the ball in flight until the last second.
4-4 at Fs31 Beatty, C. punt 41 yards to the GT28, Golden, J. return 1 yards to the GT29 (Northrup, R.).
Drive: 3 plays, 6 yards, TOP 01:22
1-10 at Gt29 GEORGIA TECH drive start at 13:38.
1-10 at Gt29 4-2-5 Thomas, J. rush for 14 yards to the GT43, 1ST DOWN GT, out-of-bounds (Andrews, N.). Derrick Mitchell Jr, Mario Edwards Jr and Reggie Northrup all chase the dive, PJ Williams blitzes himself out of the play and Nate Andrews is 10 yards off the line of scrimmage but still lets a WR push crack him. All things you can't do vs. the option.
1-10 at Gt43 4-2-5 Perkins, C. rush for 2 yards to the GT45. Toss sweep. GT slot receiver cracks back towards the middle and gets good contact on both Jalen Ramsey and Demarcus Walker. Tyler Hunter maintains outside leverage and forces the back to cut upfield, where he slips after a short gain. Got lucky.
2-8 at Gt45 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 9 yards to the FS46, 1ST DOWN GT (Andrews, N.). There's an uncalled chop block on Eddie Goldman on this play. Goldman and Derrick Mitchell get moved just enough to create a crease. Nice aggressive downhill fill by Matthew Thomas but he overruns it slightly and whiffs on the tackle.
1-10 at Fs46 4-2-5 Hill, D. rush for 2 yards to the FS44 (Hunter, T.). Toss sweep again. Ramsey gets cracked again. This is probably something they set out to do intentionally on Ramsey to slow him down. Good run support from Tyler Hunter and great inside out pursuit by EJ Levenberry to assist on the tackle.
2-8 at Fs44 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 17 yards to the FS27, 1ST DOWN GT (Andrews, N.). Whole right side of the line gets pushed backwards and sealed inside, also catching the linebacker up in the wash. With Jalen Ramsey getting upfield to take the keep/pitch man, the dive back has a huge hole off tackle to cut to. Nice tackle from behind by Nate Andrews.
1-10 at Fs27 4-2-5 Perkins, C. rush for 20 yards to the FS7, 1ST DOWN GT (Andrews, N.). FSU is playing both safeties deep. The idea behind this is to allow them to react to play action and to give them better downhill angles in run support. But when the safeties bail and take themselves completely out of the play as Tyler Hunter does here, FSU is totally outnumbered on the edge. Compounding that by staying blocked by a WR is just insult to injury.
1-G at Fs07 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 6 yards to the FS1 (Northrup, R.). Right side of the DL gets collapsed again. Guys are popping up watching the ball and allowing GT to get under them and outleverage them. Linebackers have no chance to flow because the DL are getting pushed backwards, clogging up the lanes.
2-G at Fs01 Days, S. rush for 1 yard to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 09:50. Same play, same result. Low man wins. Hasn't changed in a hundred years.
Previous play is under review. Ruling on field is touchdown.
Ruling on the field stands. Touchdown. Paul Johnson should put this drive on a clinic tape and sell it. Eating FSU's lunch.
Butker, H. kick attempt good.
Georgia Tech 7, Florida State 0
Drive: 8 plays, 71 yards, TOP 03:53
Butker, H. kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, Whitfield, K. return 26 yards to the FS26 (Harrell, A.).
1-10 at Fs26 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 09:45.
1-10 at Fs26 21 Twins Cook, D. rush for 11 yards to the FS37, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Smith, D.). Fake FB belly, option pitch to the back. I can't recall FSU running this play in a meaningful situation since Chris Thompson got hurt in 2012. Just speed to the edge and some great blocking by Ermon Lane and Rashad Greene.
1-10 at Fs37 11 Gun Winston, J. pass incomplete to Rudolph, T.. Play action sprint out. Smash combo to the play side and Winston misses on the corner route. Based on reactions post play it seems like there's some misccommunication on how the route should have been run.
2-10 at Fs37 11 Gun Trey Cook, D. rush for no gain to the FS37 (Green, S.). Inside zone. Matias can't get enough movement on the DT, who sheds and makes the tackle as Cook is trying to cut back. If Cook makes it to the backside he's gonna run for a long time.
3-10 at Fs37 PENALTY FS false start (Johnson, R.) 5 yards to the FS32. Gotta live with this out of true freshmen.
3-15 at Fs32 11 Gun Winston, J. pass complete to O'Leary, N. for 22 yards to the GT46, 1ST DOWN FS (Smith, D.). GT blitzes with man free behind it. Nice pickup by Dalvin Cook. Verticals and Winston hits O'Leary in the seam. Incredible leaping adjustment to the ball by 35.
1-10 at Gt46 11 Tight Winston, J. pass complete to O'Leary, N. for 46 yards to the GT0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 07:42. Play action on first down. O'Leary's route is really more of an Out-n-Up than a wheel route. It completely fools the corner back in Cover 2, who tries to slide underneath the out and has no idea O'Leary has turned upfield. With the safety pulled inside by the post there is nobody within 15 yards of O'Leary. Jimbo gave them boys the okey doke.
Aguayo, R. kick attempt good.
Florida State 7, Georgia Tech 7
Drive: 5 plays, 74 yards, TOP 02:10
Aguayo, R. kickoff 57 yards to the GT8, Golden, J. return 17 yards to the GT25 (Smith, K.;Northrup, R.).
1-10 at Gt25 GEORGIA TECH drive start at 07:35.
1-10 at Gt25 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 2 yards to the GT27 (Nnadi, D.;Levenberry, E.). Broadcast missed the start of the play so not real sure what happened on the dive give except that FSU defended it well for the first time all night.
2-8 at Gt27 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 1 yard to the GT28 (Hollin, D.;Edwards, M.), PENALTY FS offside (Walker, D.) 5 yards to the GT32, NO PLAY. Tremendous play by Mario Edwards to shed and tackle the dive back for no gain is wasted because Demarcus Edwards lined up offsides.
2-3 at Gt32 4-2-5 Thomas, J. rush for 19 yards to the FS49, 1ST DOWN GT, out-of-bounds (Ramsey, J.). Counter option with a dive and the QB reversing out backside. Reggie Northrup reads and reacts really well but just takes a poor angle, probably underestimating Thomas's speed.
1-10 at Fs49 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 8 yards to the FS41 (Edwards, M.;Northrup, R.). Derrick Nnadi has been playing well on this drive but gets blown out of his gap on this play. Low man wins.
2-2 at Fs41 4-2-5 Thomas, J. rush for loss of 1 yard to the FS42 (Northrup, R.). Counter option again. Reggie Northrup redeems himself by playing this extremely well. PJ Williams slips the block of the receiver and gives Thomas nowhere to pitch it.
3-3 at Fs42 4-2-5 Zenon, T. rush for 6 yards to the FS36, 1ST DOWN GT (Thomas, M.). Neat play...they show the standard triple option look but fake to the diveback and the wingback from the front side comes back around to the backside and gets the handoff. Reggie Northrup reads it really well and fills nicely but gets cut by the lead blocker. Needs to keep his feet in this scenario.
1-10 at Fs36 4-2-5 Andrews, D. rush for 20 yards to the FS16, 1ST DOWN GT, out-of-bounds (Darby, R.). Toss sweep and Jalen Ramsey gets cracked again. He's got to start to look for this block when he sees the sweep and climb over the top of it.
1-10 at Fs16 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 2 yards to the FS14 (Edwards, M.;Nnadi, D.). Man, this is a heck of a physical football play on both sides. Justin Shanks and a fast flowing Matthew Thomas rock the dive back with a major hit, but he maintains his feet and starts to drive forward again until Mario Edwards Jr meets him and drives him back.
2-8 at Fs14 4-2-5 Bostic, B. rush for 3 yards to the FS11 (Williams, P.J.). Missed read by Thomas here as GT blows up the interior of FSU's line but Thomas pulls the ball from the dive back and makes a late pitch. Great job of slipping under the receiver's block by PJ Williams.
3-5 at Fs11 4-2-5 Thomas, J. rush for 6 yards to the FS5, 1ST DOWN GT (Walker, D.). Great pass rush by Mitchell and Northrup flushes Thomas. He starts to bail out to the left and the entire defense flows that way, leaving a huge alley when he cuts back right.
1-G at Fs05 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 4 yards to the FS1 (Ramsey, J.;Northrup, R.). Unbalanced line. Counter off the counter option where the QB pivots out but then gives to the dive back. Counters off counters off counters.
2-G at Fs01 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 1 yard to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 01:45. Unbalanced line again and the right side of the line gets rolled back into the end zone.
Butker, H. kick attempt good.
Georgia Tech 14, Florida State 7
Drive: 11 plays, 75 yards, TOP 05:55 FSU defense started to get it's footing vs. the dive and Paul Johnson immediately starts going to his counters. FSU is playing the game on his terms right now.
Butker, H. kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, Whitfield, K. return 25 yards to the FS25 (Harrell, A.;Griffin, Co.).
1-10 at Fs25 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 01:40.
1-10 at Fs25 11 Gun Winston, J. pass complete to Cook, D. for 7 yards to the FS32 (Smith, D.). Called swing pass. Receivers are blocking all the way.
2-3 at Fs32 11 Pistol Trips Cook, D. rush for 26 yards to the GT42, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Austin, Law.). GT shows blitz and Jameis checks to the OZ and hits a big play. Great blocking on the perimeter, espcially by Ermon Lane, who blocks the man in front of him then backs into a linebacker pursuing from inside out. Nice seal by Bobby Hart as well.
1-10 at Gt42 11 Pistol Trips Cook, D. rush for 8 yards to the GT34 (Gotsis, A.). Outside zone. GT is run blitzing and Rod Johnson gets *just* enough of the blitzing linebacker to turn him and prevent him from making the tackle in the backfield. Bobby Hart pancakes the DE and Cook is untouched until he's 8 yards downfield.
2-2 at Gt34 10 Gun Cook, D. rush for 16 yards to the GT18, 1ST DOWN FS (Smith, D.). Inside Zone. Gigantic hole. The OL is dominating right now. Cam Erving roots a heads up nose out of there and shoves him almost to the sideline.
Drive: 4 plays, 57 yards, TOP 02:30
Georgia Tech 14, Florida State 7
