Florida State football film review: Georgia Tech 2nd Quarter

Every week we break down the result of the previous game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Georgia Tech? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

Read to find out. Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

For other quarters, visit the film review section (All quarters up by tonight).

Share this on FB and tweet it using the buttons/icons on this page. If we don't get big numbers on these, they will stop. They take far too long to put together to have a small payoff.

Please do ask any questions you may have in the comment section!

D-D At Form Play Analysis
1-10 at Gt18 Start of 2nd quarter, clock 15:00.
1-10 at Gt18 10 Gun Cook, D. rush for 9 yards to the GT9 (Golden, J.;Nealy, Q.). Inside zone again. Every lineman sustains their block and Cook shows some power to keep driving forward at the end of the run.
2-1 at Gt09 10 Gun Cook, D. rush for 8 yards to the GT1, 1ST DOWN FS (Golden, J.;Nealy, Q.). Same formation, same play. Keep calling it until they stop it, Jimbo.
1-G at Gt01 10 Gun Cook, D. rush for 1 yard to the GT0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 14:10. Jimbo goes hurry up to prevent a substitution on the goal line and calls the same play again. Same exact formation and play 4 straight times.
Aguayo, R. kick attempt good.
Florida State 14, Georgia Tech 14
Drive: 7 plays, 75 yards, TOP 02:30
Aguayo, R. kickoff 65 yards to the GT0, touchback.
1-10 at Gt25 GEORGIA TECH drive start at 14:10.
1-10 at Gt25 4-2-5 Laskey, Z. rush for 5 yards to the GT30 (Northrup, R.). Justin Shanks, in at 3 tech, gets cut at the point of attack, creating a massive hole. Gotta keep your feet.
2-5 at Gt30 4-2-5 Andrews, D. rush for 5 yards to the GT35, 1ST DOWN GT (Williams, P.J.;Northrup, R.). Reggie gets optioned, PJ gets blocked on the edge and Terrance Smith overruns the tackle.
1-10 at Gt35 4-2-5 Laskey, Z. rush for 1 yard to the GT36 (Hollin, D.). Great job by Hollin and Walker of squeezing the B gap out of existence.
2-9 at Gt36 4-2-5 Thomas, J. rush for 15 yards to the FS49, 1ST DOWN GT (Darby, R.;Andrews, N.). Counter option. FSU has this play defended well, with three different guys all having chances to make the tackle for 3 yards or less, and all whiffing.
1-10 at Fs49 4-2-5 Laskey, Z. rush for 6 yards to the FS43 (Smith, Terr.;Ramsey, J.). One of the ways Tech disguises their plays is to run the same play with the QB opening the opposite direction when he steps away from center. This play is an example of this as the blocking is identical to the standard triple option play. Desmond Hollin gets pancaked by the guard, opening up a hole in the B gap.
2-4 at Fs43 4-2-5 Laskey, Z. rush for 3 yards to the FS40 (Smith, Terr.). Derrick Nnadi defeats a block and gets into the backfield, even wrapping his arms around the back but cannot bring him down for a loss. Defenders are in position and just not making the play.
3-1 at Fs40 4-2-5 Laskey, Z. rush for 4 yards to the FS36, 1ST DOWN GT (Nnadi, D.). Nnadi guesses on this play, stepping to his right while the play is going left. If he steps playside he makes the tackle for no gain.
1-10 at Fs36 PENALTY GT false start (Braun, T.) 5 yards to the FS41.
1-15 at Fs41 4-2-5 Perkins, C. rush for 6 yards to the FS35 (Williams, P.J.). Pretty good defense here, all three options defended, though the pitch back is able to fall forward for an extra three yards.
2-9 at Fs35 4-2-5 Thomas, J. pass complete to Hill, D. for 27 yards to the FS8, 1ST DOWN GT (Walker, D.). Wheel route to the wingback out of the backfield. Vertical route from the boundary receiver clears out PJ Williams and the only defender left is Demarcus Walker in trail position. Nice throw. That's the extra dimension that Thomas brings that previous GT QBs have not.
1-G at Fs08 4-2-5 Bostic, B. rush for 4 yards to the FS4 (Andrews, N.). Toss sweep. Ramsey gets cut instead of cracked this time. Really nice job by Tyler Hunter of widening until the back is forced to cut inside where Nate Andrews is waiting. Andrews has got to get this guy on the ground without letting him spin out and dive forward for an extra two yards.
2-G at Fs04 Timeout Georgia Tech, clock 08:05.
2-G at Fs04 4-2-5 Laskey, Z. rush for 4 yards to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 08:02. Mario Edwards squeezes the dive and Laskey cuts around him. The C gap to that side is Northrup's responsibility and he overruns it.
Butker, H. kick attempt good.
Georgia Tech 21, Florida State 14
Drive: 11 plays, 75 yards, TOP 06:15
Butker, H. kickoff 64 yards to the FS1, Wilson, J. return 28 yards to the FS29 (Griffin, L.).
1-10 at Fs29 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 07:55.
1-10 at Fs29 11 Gun Winston, J. pass complete to Rudolph, T. for 8 yards to the FS37 (Davis, P.). Quick crosser underneath the deep dropping zone defenders.
2-2 at Fs37 11 Gun Trey Cook, D. rush for 4 yards to the FS41, 1ST DOWN FS (Nealy, Q.;Davis, P.). Inside zone. Great seal of the EMOL by O'Leary.
1-10 at Fs41 11 Gun Winston, J. pass complete to Greene, R. for 16 yards to the GT43, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Davis, P.). Drive concept, with O'Leary clearing out the underneath coverage and Greene running a drag into the vacated zone. Short pass and Greene does the rest.
1-10 at Gt43 11 Gun Winston, J. pass incomplete to Greene, R.. Speed out vs. soft coverage. Greene bobbles it and is out of bounds before he controls it.
2-10 at Gt43 Winston, J. rush for 16 yards to the GT27, out-of-bounds (White, D.), PENALTY FS personal foul (Hart, B.) 15 yards to the FS42, NO PLAY.
2-25 at Fs42 11 Gun Winston, J. pass complete to Cook, D. for 14 yards to the GT44, out-of-bounds (Davis, P.). Really well timed screen call. GT isn't blitzing, but they're playing very soft zones expecting deep passes and that's a great time to hit a slip screen.
3-11 at Gt44 10 Gun Trips Winston, J. pass complete to Greene, R. for 44 yards to the GT0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 05:40. Vertical from Greene in the slot vs. Man Free coverage. Poor guy GT lines up on Rashad has no chance. None.
1-G at Gt03 PENALTY FS false start (Weeks, K.) 5 yards to the GT8.
Aguayo, R. kick attempt good.
Florida State 21, Georgia Tech 21
Drive: 6 plays, 71 yards, TOP 02:15
Aguayo, R. kickoff 65 yards to the GT0, touchback.
1-10 at Gt25 GEORGIA TECH drive start at 05:40.
1-10 at Gt25 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 4 yards to the GT29 (Thomas, M.;Ramsey, J.). Counter option gets the defense flowing the wrong way and a pulling lineman absolutely levels Reggie Northrup. Good job of minimizing the gain by Ramsey.
2-6 at Gt29 4-2-5 Thomas, J. rush for 15 yards to the GT44, 1ST DOWN GT, out-of-bounds (Andrews, N.). Reverse pivot load option with the dive back serving as a lead blocker. FSU is totally outnumbered on the edge.
1-10 at Gt44 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for no gain to the GT44 (Thomas, M.). Matthew Thomas times the snap perfectly and is through a backside gap into the backfield before GT can cut him off, where he makes the tackle for no gain.
2-10 at Gt44 4-2-5 Perkins, C. rush for no gain to the GT44 (Ramsey, J.). Same load option from two plays ago but Marshall forces an early pitch and Ramsey defeats a block to tackle the pitchman for no gain. Marshall at Star and Ramsey at field corner is a clear upgrade against this particular offense.
3-10 at Gt44 4-2-5 Timeout Georgia Tech, clock 03:14.
3-10 at Gt44 PENALTY GT false start (Griffin, Ch.) 5 yards to the GT39.
3-15 at Gt39 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for 1 yard to the GT40 (Edwards, M.;Northrup, R.). Another linebacker slicing through the backside gap, this time it's Reggie Northrup. Pretty much a giveup play from GT here.
4-14 at Gt40 Rodwell, R. punt 35 yards to the FS25, out-of-bounds.
Drive: 5 plays, 15 yards, TOP 03:14 Any and all stops in this game are huge. Noles up a break.
1-10 at Fs25 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 02:26.
1-10 at Fs25 11 Gun Winston, J. pass complete to O'Leary, N. for 29 yards to the GT46, 1ST DOWN FS (Golden, J.). Seam route behind the linebackers and in front of the safety. GT has major problems right now. They definitely can't play man to man and the windows in their zones are huge.
1-10 at Gt46 11 Gun Winston, J. pass incomplete to Greene, R. (Gotsis, A.). Greene is open on the dig but the pass is batted down at the line.
2-10 at Gt46 11 Gun Winston, J. pass complete to Rudolph, T. for 11 yards to the GT35, 1ST DOWN FS (Davis, P.). 3 Verts and Winston takes the checkdown on the crosser. Jameis is displaying great patience and decision making against a less than stellar defense.
1-10 at Gt35 11 Gun Winston, J. pass complete to Cook, D. for 7 yards to the GT28, out-of-bounds (Davis, P.). Play action to Cook. O'Leary and Greene clear out the defenders to the boundary and Cook goes to the flat. Everything is flowing right now.
2-3 at Gt28 11 Gun Winston, J. pass incomplete to Wilson, J., dropped pass. No excuses. Just a flat out drop.
3-3 at Gt28 11 Gun Cook, D. rush for 4 yards to the GT24, 1ST DOWN FS (Gotsis, A.). Tech is in an over alinment with the backers shifted to the weak side and FSU hits them with power to the strong side. Perfect call.
1-10 at Gt24 11 Gun Winston, J. pass complete to Rudolph, T. for 9 yards to the GT15, out-of-bounds (Smith, D.). Again hitting the crosser underneath the deep dropping linebackers. Keep taking the free yards as long as they want to give them.
2-1 at Gt15 11 Gun Cook, D. rush for no gain to the GT15 (Freeman, K.). True zone read with the backside DE unblocked. Cook and Winston bump into each other on the mesh. I think maybe Jameis wants to pull it but Cook won't let him.
3-1 at Gt15 Timeout Florida State, clock 01:03.
3-1 at Gt15 22 Cook, D. rush for 6 yards to the GT9, 1ST DOWN FS (Johnson, I.). Inside zone. There is no scheme to talk about on this play. This is just the guys in the garnet shirts whipping the guys across from them in the white shirts.
1-G at Gt09 11 Gun Trips Winston, J. pass complete to Greene, R. for 9 yards to the GT0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 00:30. Slants from the two outside receivers while Rashad on the inside runs a corner route. Safety is influenced inside by the slants and Greene is by him before he can react.
Aguayo, R. kick attempt good.
Florida State 28, Georgia Tech 21
Drive: 10 plays, 75 yards, TOP 01:56
Aguayo, R. kickoff 65 yards to the GT0, touchback.
1-10 at Gt25 GEORGIA TECH drive start at 00:30.
1-10 at Gt25 4-2-5 Thomas, J. pass complete to Waller, D. for 12 yards to the GT37, 1ST DOWN GT (Ramsey, J.). Comeback route against Ramsey.
1-10 at Gt37 4-2-5 Thomas, J. pass incomplete. Sprint out pass and Thomas abandons it immediately, scrambling and eventually heaving it out of bounds.
2-10 at Gt37 Timeout Georgia Tech, clock 00:03.
2-10 at Gt37 4-2-5 Days, S. rush for no gain to the GT37 (Northrup, R.). Really nice fill by Reggie Northrup. GT content to get into the locker room.
3-10 at Gt37 End of half, clock 00:00.
GT will receive to start the 2nd half, attacking the west goal.
Drive: 3 plays, 12 yards, TOP 00:30 Getting a defensive stop and scoring a TD on the ensuing possession has given FSU the initiative and all they have to do is match any GT scores from here on out.
Florida State 28, Georgia Tech 21
