Florida State football film review: Georgia Tech 3rd Quarter

Every week we break down the result of the previous game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Georgia Tech? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

Read to find out. Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

For other quarters, visit the film review section (All quarters up by tonight).

Share this on FB and tweet it using the buttons/icons on this page. If we don't get big numbers on these, they will stop. They take far too long to put together to have a small payoff.

Please do ask any questions you may have in the comment section!

D-D At Form Play Analysis
3-10 at Gt37 Start of 3rd quarter, clock 15:00, FS ball on FS35.
Drive: 3 plays, 12 yards, TOP 00:30
Aguayo, R. kickoff 56 yards to the GT9, Golden, J. return 14 yards to the GT23 (Smith, K.;Featherston, L.). Kick lands at 10, really good coverage, but Golden falls forward.
1-10 at Gt23 GEORGIA TECH drive start at 14:53.
1-10 at Gt23 425 Perkins, C. rush for 20 yards to the GT43, 1ST DOWN GT (Andrews, N.). Deep Mike/Wide OLB alignment (I'll just refer to it as Deep Mike). Northrup crashes on dive, Casher sits on QB, and PJ isn't able to beat the cut from the B back. 29 gets off a block downfield and makes the tackle to prevent it from being an even bigger gain. Thomas from Deep Mike spot gets caught in wash inside. PJ has to be able to avoid the cut, and Andrews shouldn't be engaged 15 yards up field.
1-10 at Gt43 425 Andrews, D. rush for loss of 1 yard to the GT42 (Williams, P.J.). Same play, but PJ gets off the cut and makes a stop for a loss. Wasn't as much room for this one to go because Thomas doesn't get lost in wash and was there to make a play.
2-11 at Gt42 425 Perkins, C. rush for 6 yards to the GT48 (Hunter, T.). FSU shifts a safety into the box and goes single high. This forces PJ Williams to follow his receiver vertical rather than passing him off, and they're put in a bind with backers not filling. Northrup has a good excuse - held badly and then gets chopped. Not cut, chopped.
3-5 at Gt48 425 Hill, D. rush for 4 yards to the FS48 (Thomas, M.). Counter option - motion to boundary side, Marshall flies into backfield and forces early pitch, but no one is there to get the pitch man. A cut from OL does just enough to slow down Thomas from filling quickly. Hunter does a great job keeping leverage and forcing the back inside, where he meets both Hunter and Thomas. FSU gets a somewhat generous spot, which doesn't make up for the horrible spots all year from ACC crews.
4-1 at Fs48 425 Days, S. rush for 3 yards to the FS45, 1ST DOWN GT (Hollin, D.). Noles set up in a 30 front, backers up close to guards on LOS. GT runs the B back behind the tackle and he gets hit at line but falls forward. Not badly played by FSU, but just isn't the easiest thing to defend.
1-10 at Fs45 425 Thomas, J. rush for 16 yards to the FS29, 1ST DOWN GT (Williams, P.J.;Marshall, T.). This appears to be on 5/15. Both crash on dive, leaving the LT free to block Thomas coming downhill from Deep Mike. B back engages PJ (who has to be wary of pitch man), LT engages MLB, and JThomas has green grass to run into.
1-10 at Fs29 425 Days, S. rush for 3 yards to the FS26 (Nnadi, D.). Noles shift 29 into box, going single high. Nnadi does an excellent job shedding a guy who had good leverage on him, and makes the stop on the dive.
2-7 at Fs26 425 Days, S. rush for 1 yard to the FS25 (Casher, C.;Nnadi, D.). With Edwards off for a helmet play, GT tries to read Casher and they give on the dive but both Casher and Nnadi are there to clean it up - Nnadi again doing a great job shedding and finishing. Rare mistake from Justin Thomas?
3-6 at Fs25 425 Thomas, J. rush for 14 yards to the FS11, 1ST DOWN GT, out-of-bounds (Hunter, T.). 24 got into the game, playing at Deep Mike spot. Fake pitch, bootleg. You can tell how hurt 24 is by the way he tries to change direction after he spots the fake. It just ain't happening for him. Marshall does a good job reading it but can't avoid the cut from the boot side B back. Thomas, however, is a very good runner. Kid can move.
1-10 at Fs11 425 Laskey, Z. rush for 4 yards to the FS7 (Marshall, T.;Hollin, D.). Just poor alignment. Tech adds an OL to the flexbone here, 20 aligns wide, and they just have the numbers to that side to run. This is a power play where the playside guard pulls and the B back runs behind him. This is exactly the sort of wrinkle people talk about when they say PJ has counters on counters on counters. Really neat play. Hollin does a great job stacking and shedding his down blocker to get him down.
2-6 at Fs07 425 Laskey, Z. rush for 3 yards to the FS4 (Northrup, R.;Hollin, D.). Quick hit dive. Nnadi gets puts on skates a bit, and Hollin isn't quick to shed. Laskey falls forward an extra two yards.
3-3 at Fs04 425 Laskey, Z. rush for 3 yards to the FS1, 1ST DOWN GT (Andrews, N.;Hollin, D.). Noles had a run blitz on, sending both edge players Marshall and Northrup. JThomas sees that and gives the dive. Casher's lost getting off a cut and Andrews nearly slows him up before the marker.
1-G at Fs01 425 Days, S. rush for no gain to the FS1 (Walker, D.). GT goes for the cuts on the goal line just to create piles and space. Walker does an excellent job penetrating, and finishing.
2-G at Fs01 425 Days, S. rush for 1 yard to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 08:01. Same play, cuts do their job creating piles and space. Not the easiest thing to defend, but Walker gets a little lost here.
Butker, H. kick attempt good.
Florida State 28, Georgia Tech 28
Drive: 14 plays, 77 yards, TOP 06:52 Just 1-2 plays away from ending these sort of drives. Have to make the plays.
Butker, H. kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, touchback.
1-10 at Fs25 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 08:01.
1-10 at Fs25 21 I Cook, D. rush for 12 yards to the FS37, 1ST DOWN FS (Smith, D.). Twins left, closed end right. IZ action right, pitch left. Great blocking from receivers and Cook gets knocked down by the safety.
1-10 at Fs37 21 tight Winston, J. pass complete to Greene, R. for 14 yards to the GT49, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Milton, C.). Tight formation, OZ action left, rollout right. Greene crosses the formation and is wide open. Jameis hits him and he's inches away from turning this into 25 yards. Just can't keep his feet in bounds as he goes to turn the corner. This is where being able to run the wide zone helps, counters like this.
1-10 at Gt49 11 gun Winston, J. pass complete to Cook, D. for 4 yards to the GT45, out-of-bounds (Smith, D.). Designed flare to Cook to field side. Rudolph misses his blocker, who barely catches Cook's shoelaces. This had a chance to go if he makes that block.
2-6 at Gt45 11 gun Winston, J. pass complete to Greene, R. for 10 yards to the GT35, 1ST DOWN FS (White, D.). Levels concept, 80 runs a shallow square in below 35's deeper square in. Jameis hits 80, who turns upfield and gets the first down. With matchup and pressure coming from that side, very simple decision from Winston to get this out quickly underneath.
1-10 at Gt35 11 gun Winston, J. pass complete to Rudolph, T. for 7 yards to the GT28 (Golden, J.;Green, S.). Tech sends pressure again. OLB and ILB on field side blitz, Rudolph is covered very softly in slot and is wide open underneath. Winston recognizes pressure, gets it off quick and lets his athlete do the work.
2-3 at Gt28 11 gun Cook, D. rush for 4 yards to the GT24, 1ST DOWN FS (Gotsis, A.). Outside zone left, it appears Cook just trips. Hard to tell exactly, but that's what it looked like. Shame, because he was out the gate. You'll take the first down all day.
1-10 at Gt24 11 gun Winston, J. pass complete to Rudolph, T. for 5 yards to the GT19 (Smith, D.). Trips right to field. They use trips often to get Rashad as #3 (third receiver from sideline) to exploit matchups. Smash, Rashad runs deep corner and clears out the formation for Rudolph, who runs a whip route and adjusts away from coverage. Zone pressure from Tech - backer blitzes and DT drops into hook zone. Neither he nor the safety that followed 80 vertical through his hook zone are there.
2-5 at Gt19 11 gun Cook, D. rush for 3 yards to the GT16 (Davis, P.;Nealy, Q.). Power right, Matias whiffs on his block, but Cook makes that man miss. If NOL can hold his block a hair longer this could have gone for a first down.
3-2 at Gt16 22 I Cook, D. rush for no gain to the GT16 (Freeman, K.). It may not have worked this time, but this is always one of my favorite things about Jimbo's teams: they get into heavy personnel, line up in the I, and then they run wide zone. Outside zone left, Cam isn't able to hold the block on the 4-tech playside. It does look like Cook fell a bit early. Hard to tell with camera angle. This is no doubt where you miss Karlos.
4-2 at Gt16 Aguayo, R. field goal attempt from 33 GOOD, clock 03:13.
Florida State 31, Georgia Tech 28
Drive: 10 plays, 59 yards, TOP 04:48 Excellent drive, you're a hair longer on a block from converting and likely scoring a TD. Have to get these points. Can't leave these on the field vs Oregon.
Aguayo, R. kickoff 65 yards to the GT0, touchback.
1-10 at Gt25 GEORGIA TECH drive start at 03:13.
1-10 at Gt25 425 Perkins, C. rush for 12 yards to the GT37, 1ST DOWN GT, out-of-bounds (Thomas, M.). Northrup needs to scrape wide when he sees Casher take the dive here. Instead, PJ is forced to 1) avoid a cut block and play both 2) the QB and 3) the pitch man. His normal responsibility is to take the pitch and avoid the cut, but he's forced to squeeze this and it lets the pitch man get wide of him. Thomas could also stand to fill quicker.
1-10 at Gt37 425 Laskey, Z. rush for 4 yards to the GT41 (Hollin, D.). FSU switches out of Deep Mike alignment to base nickel. Shanks can't get off a block, so they run the dive. Hollin stacks, sheds and brings down the B back.
2-6 at Gt41 425 Hill, D. rush for 13 yards to the FS46, 1ST DOWN GT (Williams, P.J.). This is actually relatively well played option, but PJ isn't able to get off his block to get the pitch man. If he does, this is a TFL/no gain type play. But alas. Thomas gets lost inside too easily here.
1-10 at Fs46 425 Laskey, Z. rush for 3 yards to the FS43 (Casher, C.). GT gives the dive, Casher does a good job wrapping it up and bringing it down.
2-7 at Fs43 425 Perkins, C. rush for loss of 1 yard to the FS44 (Marshall, T.). Toss sweep. This gave FSU fits in the first half, and they do a great job defending it here. Marshall does an excellent job continuing to force the back wide and not giving him space to cut back, and Ramsey forces it inside. Marshall finishes it up for a TFL. Good defense, flowed to the ball. Ramsey adds trademark clapping.
3-8 at Fs44 416 Thomas, J. pass incomplete to Bostic, B.. 5 man pressure, Thomas gets a little happy feet but the pocket is well contained. He throws it to back in flat but makes a horrid throw.
4-8 at Fs44 Rodwell, R. punt 34 yards to the FS10, fair catch by Greene, R.. Good punt.
Drive: 6 plays, 31 yards, TOP 03:02 Very good defense on this drive. Holds them to no points.
1-10 at Fs10 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 00:11.
1-10 at Fs10 21 I Cook, D. rush for 2 yards to the FS12, out-of-bounds (Smith, D.). Outside zone left, GT forces it wide, safety does a good job forcing it out of bounds.
Drive: 1 plays, 2 yards, TOP 04:46
Florida State 31, Georgia Tech 28
