Florida State football film review: Miami 1st quarter

Every week we break down the result of the previous Florida State game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Miami? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

Read to find out. Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

For other quarters, visit the film review section (All quarters up by Wednesday evening).

Share this on FB and tweet it using the buttons/icons on this page. If we don't get big numbers on these, they will stop. They take far too long to put together to have a small payoff.

Please ask any questions you may have in the comment section!

D-D At Formation Play Analysis
1-10 at Um35 FS ball on FS35.
19-Roberto Aguayo kickoff 65 yards to the UM0, touchback.
1-10 at Um25 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya at QB for Miami.
1-10 at Um25 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya deep in pass complete to 3A-Stacy Coley for 22 yards to the UM47, 1ST DOWN UM (1H-Tyler Hunter), clock 14:47. FSU runs an end-tackle twist and gets decent pressure. Kaaya slides away from it and finds Coley behind the backers and in front of the safeties. Camera angles are too tight to see the route/coverage, Fisher indicated Northrup eye violated.
1-10 at Um47 4-2-5 2A-Joe Yearby rush over right guard for 5 yards to the FS48 (9-Josh Sweat), clock 14:13. Inside zone. Playside is filled beautifully by Hoskins. Derrick Nnadi gets sealed backside allowing a very small cutback crease for Yearby. Good run.
2-5 at Fs48 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya slant pass incomplete to 86-David Njoku, dropped pass, clock 13:57. Double slants to the field against soft coverage. Njoku is wide open and just drops it.
3-5 at Fs48 3-1-6 15-Brad Kaaya sideline pass incomplete to 8-Braxton Berrios, QB hurry by 4N-Giorgio Newberry, clock 13:52. FSU shows blitz, then drops 8. Good route recognition and coverage by Derwin James. Kaaya has nowhere to go with it and throws it in the dirt at Berrios' feet.
4-5 at Fs48 16-Justin Vogel punt 39 yards to the FS9, fair catch by 8W-Kermit Whitfield.
Drive: 4 plays, 27 yards, TOP 01:15 FSU is clearly planning to throw a lot at Kaaya and the Miami OL in terms of blitz looks and mixing coverages, while actually playing fairly conservative.
1-10 at Fs09 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 13:45.
1-10 at Fs09 6-Everett Golson at QB for Florida State.
1-10 at Fs09 11 Gun 6-Everett Golson screen pass complete to 3-Jesus Wilson for loss of 2 yards to the FS7, clock 13:13. Packaged play, inside zone read with an orbit motion bubble. Golson throws the bubble too low and Bobo goes to the ground to catch it.
2-12 at Fs07 11 Gun Trips 6-Everett Golson wide receiver screen left pass complete to 3-Jesus Wilson for 7 yards to the FS14, out-of-bounds (33-Trent Harris), clock 13:02. Packaged play, inside zone with a screen to the trips side. This is a new way to run a  WR screen that has become very popular in the NFL. The inside slot receiver lines up well off the line, then runs a flat route while the outside receivers block. The throw is still behind the line of scrimmage, so the receivers can block downfield, but it doesn't look like a bubble so defenders don't get an immediate key.
3-5 at Fs14 00 Empty 6-Everett Golson slant pass complete to 1-Ermon Lane for 7 yards to the FS21, 1ST DOWN FS (3-Tracy Howard), clock 12:30. Drive concept, with the bench route from the slot clearing out the zone for the drag route from the outside receiver. Really nice job by Golson of getting an accurate pass through a window with pressure coming.
1-10 at Fs21 11 Gun 6-Everett Golson screen pass complete to 88-Mavin Saunders for 7 yards to the FS28 (2-Deon Bush), clock 12:01. Play action OZ, rollout the other way with Saunders leaking out the backside on a slide route.
2-3 at Fs28 21 4-Dalvin Cook rush option left for 72 yards to the UM0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 11:30. This is load option, not speed option as it has been called. Freddie Stevenson misses his cut blocking assignment on the force defender, but it doesn't matter as Golson holds it long enough to draw him inside before pitching. Cook's speed and a nice block on the edge by Rudolph take care of the rest.
19-Roberto Aguayo kick attempt good.
Florida State 7, Miami 0 The question as to whether Fisher has been holding back parts of the offense is answered with a resounding yes.
Drive: 5 plays, 91 yards, TOP 02:15
19-Roberto Aguayo kickoff 65 yards to the UM0, touchback.
1-10 at Um25 MIAMI drive start at 11:30.
1-10 at Um25 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya slant pass complete to 5A-Standish Dobard for 9 yards to the UM34 (20-Trey Marshall), clock 11:09. Slant to the TE in the slot. Pretty good coverage by Marshall is beaten by an extremely accurate throw.
2-1 at Um34 4-2-5 2A-Joe Yearby rush over right end for 2 yards to the UM36, 1ST DOWN UM (18-Ro'Derrick Hoskins), clock 10:38. Outside zone. Great job by Hoskins to defeat the backside cut block and make the tackle when Yearby cuts back.
1-10 at Um36 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya middle left pass complete to 2A-Joe Yearby for 3 yards to the UM39 (1H-Tyler Hunter), clock 10:00. Great initial coverage by the secondary. Kaaya buys time and finds the back leaking out of the backfield. Good tackle in space by Hunter. This pass is actually batted by the DL.
2-7 at Um39 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya deep pass complete to 3A-Stacy Coley for 38 yards to the FS23, 1ST DOWN UM (42-Lamarcus Brutus), clock 09:31. Good use of motion and formation by Miami to get Coley manned up on Tyler Hunter who just can't run with the speedy receiver. Hunter also gives outside leverage to the receiver, which he absolutely should not do as FSU is in a single high safety alignment.
1-10 at Fs23 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya wide receiver screen right pass complete to 6-Herb Waters for 4 yards to the FS19 (8-Jalen Ramsey), clock 09:07. Miami gets away with a chop block on Jalen Ramsey on this bubble screen. He gets up and chases it down anyway.
2-6 at Fs19 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya flag pass incomplete to 86-David Njoku, clock 08:37. Wheel route from the TE lined up in the inside slot to the trips side. Pretty good coverage by Hunter. Excellent pressure by Newberry and Pugh forces an offbalance throw.
3-6 at Fs19 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya crossing pass complete to 8-Braxton Berrios for 14 yards to the FS5, 1ST DOWN UM (3J-Derwin James), PENALTY FS roughing passer (20-Trey Marshall) 3 yards to the FS2. FSU brings heavy pressure for the first time all game, blitzing Marshall off the edge and Northrup from the Will linebacker spot. Marshall is unblocked and rocks the QB but not before he gets off an accurate pass to the switch concept. Miami tipped this route concept by the WR alignment, but FSU did not spot it.
1-G at Fs02 1st and 2.
Official Review: Call on the field is targeting.
Official Review: Call is confirmed. #20-Marshall is disqualified. It's debatable whether Marshall initiated contact above the shoulders, but he definitely dipped his head just before contact and made it an easy call to uphold. See what you hit.
1-G at Fs02 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya rush for loss of 6 yards to the FS8, fumble by 15-Brad Kaaya. FSU fails to line up correctly, with no one over the receiver to the field. Miami doesn't notice as they have a power run on and Kaaya drops the snap.
2-G at Fs08 Clock 07:40.
2-G at Fs08 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya middle pass incomplete to 1A-Rashawn Scott, clock 07:37. Excellent coverage by FSU on some variant of a snag concept and Kaaya has to throw it away when the FSU finally fights through the holds to apply pressure.
3-G at Fs08 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya sacked for loss of 5 yards to the FS13 (44-DeMarcus Walker), clock 07:21. What a tremendous rush by Demarcus Walker. He bullrushes the tackle off the line then bends the edge and brings the quarterback down. Just awesome.
4-G at Fs13 5B-Michael Badgley field goal attempt from 30 GOOD, clock 06:55.
Florida State 7, Miami 3
Drive: 11 plays, 62 yards, TOP 04:35 Miami's OL is doing an excellent job of holding just enough to not get called.
43-Jon Semerene kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, touchback.
1-10 at Fs25 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 06:55.
1-10 at Fs25 22 6-Everett Golson flag pass complete to 81-Ryan Izzo for 37 yards to the UM38, 1ST DOWN FS (26-R. Jenkins), clock 06:41. Beautiful play design. The post route from the WR pulls the safety into the middle of the field and when Izzo gets behind the linebackers on the dig route there is no one anywhere near him.
1-10 at Um38 10 Gun Trips 4-Dalvin Cook rush up middle for 2 yards to the UM36 (47-Ufomba Kamalu), clock 06:15. True zone read with the backside DE going unblocked. Golson should have kept but doesn't even appear to be looking at the DE.
2-8 at Um36 11 Gun Trips 6-Everett Golson crossing pass complete to 4-Dalvin Cook for 36 yards to the UM0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 05:42. FSU has all three receivers to one side and the back next to the QB on the opposite side. The receivers all run verticals to void the underneath coverage and the back runs a circle route into this void from the other side of the formation. Great play call.
19-Roberto Aguayo kick attempt good.
Florida State 14, Miami 3 Jimbo is calling a masterful game.
Drive: 3 plays, 75 yards, TOP 01:17
19-Roberto Aguayo kickoff 59 yards to the UM6, 1B-Mark Walton return 4 yards to the UM10, fumble by 1B-Mark Walton. Excellent kick coverage.
1-10 at Um10 MIAMI drive start at 05:38.
1-10 at Um10 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya crossing pass incomplete to 1A-Rashawn Scott, clock 05:33. Miami continues to attack the middle of the field, between the linebackers and safeties. The receiver is open, throw is just too high and strong. Serious holding by the right tackle on Newberry.
2-10 at Um10 4-2-5 2A-Joe Yearby rush over right end for 1 yard to the UM11 (90-Demarcus Christmas), clock 05:18. Power play is completely blown up by Demarcus Christmas, who shoves the backside guard into the backfield and into the path of the back, then sheds and makes the tackle. Tremendous play.
3-9 at Um11 PENALTY UM false start (73-Trevor Darling) 5 yards to the UM6, clock 04:49.
3-14 at Um06 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya sideline pass incomplete to 82-Tyre Brady, clock 04:29. Kaaya uncorks a bad pass off his back foot that would have been short of the first down anyway, against a 3 man rush. Doesn't even give the downfield routes a chance to develop.
4-14 at Um06 16-Justin Vogel punt 47 yards to the FS47, fair catch by 3-Jesus Wilson.
Drive: 3 plays, minus 4 yards, TOP 01:16
1-10 at Fs47 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 04:22.
1-10 at Fs47 10 Gun 6-Everett Golson rush quarterback scramble for 3 yards to the 50 yardline, out-of-bounds, clock 04:13. Orbit motion. FSU has a double move wide open but Rod Johnson has the rare protection error, Tremendous strength by Golson to avoid the sack and turn the play into a positive gain.
2-7 at Fs50 10 Gun 6-Everett Golson wide receiver screen right pass complete to 3-Jesus Wilson for 10 yards to the UM40, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (6A-Jamal Carter), clock 03:38. Play action, orbit motion screen. Fun play.
1-10 at Um40 00 Gun Empty 6-Everett Golson middle pass complete to 15-Travis Rudolph for 12 yards to the UM28, 1ST DOWN FS (26-R. Jenkins), clock 03:05. Rod Johnson gives up a pressure to a bull rush. Golson spins out and finds Rudolph down the field for a nice gain. Kid is dealing right now.
1-10 at Um28 12 Tight 4-Dalvin Cook rush left for 1 yard to the UM27 (3-Tracy Howard), clock 02:18. Weird play. Think the play call may have been garbled as there is not a coherent blocking scheme going on here.
2-9 at Um27 10 Gun 6-Everett Golson slant pass complete to 15-Travis Rudolph for 10 yards to the UM17, 1ST DOWN FS (25-Dallas Crawford), clock 01:57. Orbit motion again. This time they use it to disguise a tunnel screen. This is awesome stuff. Jimbo is pulling out all the stops.
1-10 at Um17 12 Gun Twins 4-Dalvin Cook rush right for 2 yards to the UM15 (8A-A. Muhammad), clock 01:16. Packaged play, outside zone with a bubble. If Golson has a keep option on this play he misread it as there was a massive gap in the defense behind the run. Derrick Kelly gives too much ground, disrupting Cook's path and dooming the run.
2-8 at Um15 Timeout Florida State, clock 00:55.
2-8 at Um15 00 Gun Empty 6-Everett Golson rush quarterback draw for 11 yards to the UM4, 1ST DOWN FS (2-Deon Bush), clock 00:46. QB draw from empty, FSU needs one more block to bust this. Receivers sell it well with good routes.
1-G at Um04 22 6-Everett Golson timing route pass incomplete to 81-Ryan Izzo, clock 00:17. Play action rollout. Well defended by Miami, maybe Izzo should be deeper here.
2-G at Um04 11 Gun Trips 4-Dalvin Cook rush right for loss of 1 yard to the UM5 (47-Ufomba Kamalu;17-Tyriq McCord). Another zone read where Golson needs to keep if he has the option. The unblocked DE chases it down from behind.
