Florida State football film review: Miami 3rd quarter

Every week we break down the result of the previous Florida State game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Miami? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

Read to find out. Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

For other quarters, visit the film review section (All quarters up by Wednesday evening).

Share this on FB and tweet it using the buttons/icons on this page. If we don't get big numbers on these, they will stop. They take far too long to put together to have a small payoff.

Please ask any questions you may have in the comment section!

1-10 at Um32 Start of 3rd quarter, clock 15:00, UM ball on UM35.
Miami will kick to begin the 2nd half and defend the south goal.
43-Jon Semerene kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, touchback.
1-10 at Fs25 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 15:00.
1-10 at Fs25 6-Everett Golson at QB for Florida State.
1-10 at Fs25 21 6-Everett Golson middle left pass complete to 4-Dalvin Cook for 1 yard to the FS26 (3-Tracy Howard), clock 14:43. PA, FSU has a deep shot open, wants to kill Miami early, but Golson is shy in the pocket and doesn't step up.
2-9 at Fs26 11 gun 6-Everett Golson middle right pass complete to 4-Dalvin Cook for 10 yards to the FS36, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (5-Jermaine Grace), clock 14:16. Curl flat quick game and Cook is open easily.
1-10 at Fs36 00 gun 6-Everett Golson middle right pass complete to 8W-Kermit Whitfield for 5 yards to the FS41, out-of-bounds (56-Raphael Kirby), clock 13:39. Camera angle is too tight to see all routes, but it looks like three deep shots a comeback and a drag, which is open and Golson hits it. Not sure if someone was open downfield.
2-5 at Fs41 11 gun 6-Everett Golson rush over left end for 2 yards to the FS43, clock 13:03. Golson kept on a zone read! Finally, though he screwed this up two or three times throughout the game and really hurt FSU's offense. This set up a manageable third down.
3-3 at Fs43 11 gun 4-Dalvin Cook rush over left end for loss of 2 yards to the FS41 (47-Ufomba Kamalu), clock 12:25. Zone read package play and Hoefeld just gets beat which kills the play.
4-5 at Fs41 38-Cason Beatty punt 59 yards to the UM0, touchback. Too long.
Drive: 5 plays, 16 yards, TOP 03:01 Golson really wasn't too sharp here, may have missed a check as well.
1-10 at Um20 MIAMI drive start at 11:59.
1-10 at Um20 15-Brad Kaaya at QB for Miami.
1-10 at Um20 4-2-5 2A-Joe Yearby rush right for 6 yards to the UM26 (18-Ro'Derrick Hoskins), clock 11:42. Ridiculous. DL plays this very well, FSU has both linebackers in the hole and they miss the tackle.
2-4 at Um26 4-2-5 2A-Joe Yearby rush over right tackle for 6 yards to the UM32, 1ST DOWN UM (5-Reggie Northrup;18-Ro'Derrick Hoskins). Zone read type play, Hoskins is probably too deep here and the ball is cut back underneath against him.
1-10 at Um32 PENALTY UM personal foul (3A-Stacy Coley) 15 yards to the UM17. Swag Coley takes a swing.
1-10 at Um17 4-2-5 PENALTY FS offside defense (99-Nile LawrenceStample) 5 yards to the UM22, clock 11:17. Center had been drawing guys offsides all game for which he was called, but this time I do not see anything and think NLS just jumped.
1-5 at Um22 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya post pass complete to 1A-Rashawn Scott for 20 yards to the UM42, 1ST DOWN UM (42-Lamarcus Brutus), clock 11:03. Miami actually has two receivers in the same area and I am not sure who it is going to, but Scott makes a nice jumping catch. Pass rush a hair slow, probably helps that Miami ran the ball on previous two plays.
1-10 at Um42 4-2-5 2A-Joe Yearby rush over right guard for loss of 2 yards to the UM40 (18-Ro'Derrick Hoskins), clock 10:30. Beautiful destruction of a double team by Nile Lawrence-Stample, linebackers flow free. Also good play of blocks by Nnadi.
2-12 at Um40 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya slant pass complete to 3A-Stacy Coley for 8 yards to the UM48, clock 09:36. Miami is in a stack release here and Coley is the second man, FSU in Cover 2, throw is between the drop zones of Hunter and Hoskins. The first man helped to widen Hoskins, who is fairly deep and doesn't react too quickly.
3-4 at Um48 3-1-7 15-Brad Kaaya middle right pass complete to 23-Chris Herndon for 9 yards to the FS43, 1ST DOWN UM (42-Lamarcus Brutus), clock 09:09. Jimbo Fisher said this was not Brutus' fault, and that another safety should have rotated over, but I don't know who that should be and Brutus does point to himself as the fault. Maybe Derwin James was not supposed to blitz and instead drop? No idea.
1-10 at Fs43 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya middle pass incomplete to 8-Braxton Berrios (9-Josh Sweat). FSU brings some pressure and Josh Sweat gets around the edge. Tyler Hunter does a good job to duck under a pick route and stay in phase. Note: Sweat and Walker lined up on same side.
2-10 at Fs43 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya slant pass complete to 3A-Stacy Coley for 13 yards to the FS30, 1ST DOWN UM (3J-Derwin James), clock 08:46. Play action actually works this time for Miami, freezing Tyler Hunter, and Derwin James doesn't react all that quick, either.
1-10 at Fs30 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya middle left pass incomplete to 18-Lawrence Cager, QB hurry by 4N-Giorgio Newberry, clock 08:21, QB hurry by 1M-Derrick Mitchell Jr.. This is really nice defense. Great rush effort by Hoskins, Newberry gets his hands up, Hunter/White play the rub well.
2-10 at Fs30 4-2-5 2A-Joe Yearby rush right for 4 yards to the FS26, out-of-bounds (8-Jalen Ramsey), clock 08:04. Pugh and Hoskins get sucked inside and one has to keep outside leverage, I think one needs to stay outside.
3-6 at Fs26 3-2-6 15-Brad Kaaya sideline pass complete to 1A-Rashawn Scott for 10 yards to the FS16, 1ST DOWN UM, clock 07:36. Josh Sweat falls down which gives Brad Kaaya plenty of time to hit a comebacker route to Scott, who beats Ramsey. Scott is a good player. Jacob Pugh should probably be a bit deeper in his drop to make this throw somewhat tougher.
1-10 at Fs16 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya sideline pass incomplete to 23-Chris Herndon (8-Jalen Ramsey), clock 07:14. Brad Kaaya makes a huge mistake throwing short against Cover 2, Jalen Ramsey baits him into a pick-6, but leaves his feet and doesn't make the catch. This would be a drive and game ender because he's going to score and it's going to be 27-10
2-10 at Fs16 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya sideline pass incomplete to 1A-Rashawn Scott, clock 07:10. Goos pressure and good coverage, Kaaya throws it away.
3-10 at Fs16 3-1-7 15-Brad Kaaya middle left pass complete to 18-Lawrence Cager for 13 yards to the FS3, 1ST DOWN UM (1H-Tyler Hunter;37-Keelin Smith), clock 06:47. FSU rushes 3 and drops 8 and there is no reason anyone should be this open, I don't think Tyler Hunter closes this space quickly enough, but other guys could also close distance. Also both pass rushers get run past the QB and Kaaya has plenty of room to step up.
1-G at Fs03 4-2-5 2A-Joe Yearby rush up middle for 1 yard to the FS2 (4N-Giorgio Newberry;5-Reggie Northrup), clock 06:23. Good DL play beating blocks
2-G at Fs02 5-3-3 2A-Joe Yearby rush over left tackle for 1 yard to the FS1 (5-Reggie Northrup), clock 06:08. Demarcus Christmas great reaction off the snap, Josh Sweat slightly ovverruns.
3-G at Fs01 5-3-3 15-Brad Kaaya middle right pass complete to 2A-Joe Yearby for 1 yard to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 05:36. Miami shifts from a heavy formation to a bunch gun look, and linebacker Lorenzo Phillips does not slide with the back to the flat. Derwin James makes a great effort but it's a hair too late.
5B-Michael Badgley kick attempt good.
Florida State 20, Miami 17
Drive: 17 plays, 80 yards, TOP 06:23 17 plays to go 80 yards. This really was FSU's plan: make Miami go on long, sustained drives, deny big plays and bet it can't do it too often. It did here, but couldn't for most of the night. Miami made several errors that should have ended the drive but FSU didn't take advantage.
43-Jon Semerene kickoff 47 yards to the FS18, out-of-bounds, FS ball on FS35.
1-10 at Fs35 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 05:36.
1-10 at Fs35 11 gun 6-Everett Golson screen pass incomplete to 4-Dalvin Cook, QB hurry by 95-Anthony Moten, clock 05:32. FSU tries to set up a screen and Miami is in a slant and FSU does not handle it well.
2-10 at Fs35 10 pistol 6-Everett Golson wide receiver screen left pass complete to 8W-Kermit Whitfield for 4 yards to the FS39 (29-Corn Elder), clock 05:14. Horrible throw by Everett Golson causes Kermit Whitfield to jump and spin around, lose all momentum, and Ermon Lane misses a block, too.
3-6 at Fs39 10 gun 6-Everett Golson crossing pass incomplete to 3-Jesus Wilson, clock 04:41. Golson does a good job stepping up in the pocket and puts a good throw on BoBo Wilson, and Wilson drops the ball. Bad drop.
4-6 at Fs39 38-Cason Beatty punt 55 yards to the UM6, 29-Corn Elder return 0 yards to the UM6, fumble by 29-Corn Elder. Great punt.
Drive: 3 plays, 4 yards, TOP 01:03 One OL mistake, one WR mistake, one QB mistake. Equality.
1-10 at Um06 MIAMI drive start at 04:33.
1-10 at Um06 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya deep out pass complete to 3A-Stacy Coley for 26 yards to the UM32, 1ST DOWN UM, out-of-bounds, clock 04:20. Miami play-action holds the defense a bit, Demarcus Walker comes a half count from crushing Kaaya in the end zone, Stacy Coley gets between Derwin James and Tyler Hunter.
1-10 at Um32 4-2-5 1B-Mark Walton rush up middle for 3 yards to the UM35 (99-Nile LawrenceStample), clock 03:42. Some good running from Mark Walton, decent cutback after FSU played good at line.
2-7 at Um35 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya crossing pass incomplete to 86-David Njoku, PENALTY UM pass interference (86-David Njoku) 15 yards to the UM20, NO PLAY, clock 03:18. Another hit on Kaaya and the throw is high.
2-22 at Um20 4-2-5 15-Brad Kaaya sideline pass complete to 86-David Njoku for 13 yards to the UM33 (29-Nate Andrews), clock 02:51. This is a neat play from Miami. Looks like a fake WR screen but the blocker ends up running a pattern. Give Miami credit for this one.
3-9 at Um33 4-1-6 15-Brad Kaaya deep out pass incomplete to 23-Chris Herndon, PENALTY UM holding declined, clock 02:30. FSU brings pressure, Miami has to hold, but even with the holding Ramsey has good coverage.
4-9 at Um33 16-Justin Vogel punt 42 yards to the FS25, out-of-bounds.
Drive: 4 plays, 27 yards, TOP 02:11 Very strong defensive series overall.
1-10 at Fs25 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 02:22.
1-10 at Fs25 11 pistol 4-Dalvin Cook rush up middle for 6 yards to the FS31 (33-Trent Harris), clock 02:02. Great initialblock Derrick Kelly but he should peel off to the backer, decent block Mavin Saunders.
2-4 at Fs31 11 pistol 4-Dalvin Cook rush over left guard for 5 yards to the FS36, 1ST DOWN FS (56-Raphael Kirby), clock 01:38. Same play, good blocks Hoefeld and Bell, good vision by Cook.
1-10 at Fs36 11 gun 6-Everett Golson sideline pass complete to 88-Mavin Saunders for 17 yards to the UM47, 1ST DOWN FS (5-Jermaine Grace), clock 01:03. This should be checked to a QB sweep if I understand FSU's rules correctly, but the play worked anyway. Beautiful play action throwback that Fisher set up with motion on previous drives.
1-10 at Um47 11 pistol 4-Dalvin Cook rush over left tackle for loss of 3 yards to the 50 yardline (8A-A. Muhammad), clock 00:33. Just an awful, awful block by Mavin Saunders. Zero effort.
2-13 at Fs50 11 gun 6-Everett Golson deep out pass complete to 15-Travis Rudolph for 16 yards to the UM34, 1ST DOWN FS (56-Raphael Kirby), clock 00:04. Great pass protection by the line, good blitz pickup by Cook, easy throw and catch.
Drive: 5 plays, 41 yards, TOP 05:29
