Every week we break down the result of the previous Florida State game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Georgia Tech? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?
Read to find out. Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.
For other quarters, visit the film review section (All quarters up by Wednesday evening).

3-19 | at Fs32 | Start of 2nd quarter, clock 15:00.
3-19 | at Fs32 | 10 Gun | Golson, E. pass incomplete to Rudolph, T. (Golden, J.). | Good read but Golson is late and slightly behind on this throw, allowing the backside safety to break up the pass. FSU's failure to hit some of these wide open verticals is a problem. The plays are there to be made. |
4-19 | at Fs32 | Beatty, C. punt 52 yards to the GT16, Golden, J. return 9 yards to the GT25 (Stevenson, F.).
Drive: 6 plays, 7 yards, TOP 02:57
1-10 | at Gt25 | GEORGIA TECH drive start at 14:41.
1-10 | at Gt25 | 4-3 | Lynch, C. rush for 5 yards to the GT30 (Ramsey, J.). | Toss sweep to the wingback. Newberry gets ankle tackled by the OT or he likely throws this for a loss. Ramsey meets the back at the line, but goes for the strip and allows the back to spin out for a nice gain. |
2-5 | at Gt30 | 4-3 | Lynch, C. rush for 9 yards to the GT39, 1ST DOWN GT (Northrup, R.). | Hoskins evades the arc block of the tackle but loses outside leverage on the pitchman in the process, allowing him to turn the corner. |
1-10 | at Gt39 | 4-2-5 | Marshall, M. rush for 4 yards to the GT43 (Hoskins, R.;Christmas, D.). | This is a straight dive give with no read by the QB. Defenders used to being read hesitate and lose initiative to the offensive blockers who are able to drive a lane into the left side for a decent gain. |
2-6 | at Gt43 | 4-2-5 | Marshall, M. rush for 1 yard to the GT44 (Casher, C.). | Same play to the other side. Looks like triple option but it's straight dive blocking. This time the tackles anchor better and the back bounces it outside. Casher does a great job of shedding and making the tackle for almost no gain. |
3-5 | at Gt44 | Timeout Georgia Tech, clock 12:07.
3-5 | at Gt44 | 4-2-5 | Thomas, J. pass intercepted by Brutus, L. at the FS41, Brutus, L. return 57 yards to the GT2 (Thomas, J.). | GT is running a sprint out pass to the field, which happens to be right into the teeth of a blitz by Javien Elliott and Derwin James. Thomas reverses and heaves it to the only receiver to the otherside. Great read and break on the ball by Lamarcus Brutus. Gotta score, son. |
Drive: 5 plays, 19 yards, TOP 02:50
1-G | at Gt02 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 11:51.
1-G | at Gt02 | 23 | Cook, D. rush for 2 yards to the GT0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 11:46. | FSU's goal line power play is pretty devastating, with Demarcus Walker and Stevenson lead blocking and Wilson Bell pulling through the hole. Cook walks in. |
Aguayo, R. kick attempt good.
Florida State 10, Georgia Tech 3
Drive: 1 plays, 2 yards, TOP 00:05
Aguayo, R. kickoff 65 yards to the GT0, touchback.
1-10 | at Gt25 | GEORGIA TECH drive start at 11:46.
1-10 | at Gt25 | 4-2-5 | Marshall, M. rush for 3 yards to the GT28 (Sweat, J.). | Triple option. Sweat, who has dive responsibility gets caught peeking at the QB. |
2-7 | at Gt28 | 4-3 | Thomas, J. rush for 10 yards to the GT38, 1ST DOWN GT. | Freeze option play, which is the normal triple option with the QB pivoting opposite the direction of the play to mess with defensive keys. Hoskins hesitates and has to avoid a cut block, allowing the pitch man to get the corner. |
1-10 | at Gt38 | 4-2-5 | Lands-Davis, M. rush for no gain to the GT38 (Northrup, R.). | Triple option run right into the teeth of Jalen Ramsey's corner blitz. Ramsey is unaccounted for in the blocking scheme, forcing an early pitch and leaving Reggie Northrup unblocked. Score one for Charles Kelly. |
2-10 | at Gt38 | Thomas, J. rush for no gain to the GT38.
3-10 | at Gt38 | Thomas, J. pass incomplete to Jeune, R. (Ramsey, J.).

Ruling on the field stands.
4-10 | at Gt38 | Rodwell, R. punt 39 yards to the FS23, Wilson, J. return 1 yards to the FS24 (Freeman, K.).
Drive: 5 plays, 13 yards, TOP 02:55
1-10 | at Fs24 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 08:51.
1-10 | at Fs24 | 11 Gun | Golson, E. pass complete to Whitfield, K. for 22 yards to the FS46, 1ST DOWN FS (Golden, J.). | Play action crossing route. Linebackers are sucked up by the play action and Golson hits the crosser behind them. Nice pass protection. |
1-10 | at Fs46 | 11 Pistol | Cook, D. rush for 11 yards to the GT43, 1ST DOWN FS (Smith, D.). | Packaged play, inside zone with a bubble. Mavety is a beast on this play, chipping the DT before passing him off to Hoefeld and blocking the linebacker almost into the sideline. Good job of sealing the DT by Hoefeld. A fully healthy Cook probably takes this for a long gain. |
1-10 | at Gt43 | 21 Bunch | Cook, D. rush for 4 yards to the GT39 (Austin, Law.;Davis, P.). | Cook misses a great cutback lane early. He does find his way back to it eventually but the defense has time to rally and minimizes the gain. |
2-6 | at Gt39 | 21 Twins | Cook, D. rush for 12 yards to the GT27, 1ST DOWN FS (Golden, J.). | Option pitch of the fake to the fullback. Rudolph misses his block and Dalvin outruns the angle. |
1-10 | at Gt27 | 11 Pistol | Cook, D. rush for 3 yards to the GT24 (Durham, S.), PENALTY FS holding (Izzo, R.) 10 yards to the GT34. | This is a ridiculous holding call. Izzo is out of position and barely touches the guy, with no apparent jersey grab. |
1-17 | at Gt34 | 1st and 17. | ||
1-17 | at Gt34 | 11 Gun | Golson, E. pass complete to Rudolph, T. for 20 yards to the GT14, 1ST DOWN FS (Austin, Law.). | All curls and the GT safety takes a terrible angle, allowing Rudolph to turn upfield and get a first down. Golson gets rocked on this throw. |
1-10 | at Gt14 | 11 Pistol | Cook, D. rush for 3 yards to the GT11 (Davis, P.;Freeman, K.). | Inside zone. Derrick Kelly and Wilson Bell combo the backside tackle. Bell is uncovered and should leave the combo to get the playside backer, or Kelly should leave it to get the backside linebacker if it's a designed cutback. Neither happens and both backers are unblocked, leaving Cook with nowhere to go. |
2-7 | at Gt11 | 21 Gun | Cook, D. rush for 1 yard to the GT10 (Golden, J.). | Inside zone again. Jimbo said they failed to get the backside linebacker blocked but I'm not sure who should have done this. Maybe Stevenson. |
3-6 | at Gt10 | Timeout Florida State, clock 04:28.
3-6 | at Gt10 | 10 Gun | Golson, E. pass incomplete to Wilson, J.. | Just a really impatient throw here from Golson. FSU is running a variant of slant flat concept where the flat is an angle route that turns back inside. Golson needs to let the angle route develop. He goes to the slant and leads Bobo right into the defender. The angle route was almost certainly a tag which means Golson has to be looking for that first. |
4-6 | at Gt10 | Aguayo, R. field goal attempt from 27 GOOD, clock 04:18.
Florida State 13, Georgia Tech 3 | Kicking field goals in the red zone gets you beat.
Drive: 10 plays, 66 yards, TOP 04:43
Aguayo, R. kickoff 54 yards to the GT11, Lands-Davis, M. return 1 yards to the GT12 (Cook, D.), PENALTY GT illegal block (Lewis, T.) 6 yards to the GT6, 1st and 10, GT ball on GT6.
1-10 | at Gt06 | GEORGIA TECH drive start at 04:08.
1-10 | at Gt06 | 4-3 | Willis, I. rush for loss of 3 yards to the GT3 (James, D.). | Thomas fumbles the snap, recovers it and pitches late to his wingback, getting him murdered by Derwin James. |
2-13 | at Gt03 | 4-2-5 | Thomas, J. pass complete to Jeune, R. for 33 yards to the GT36, 1ST DOWN GT (Elliott, J.). | Such a pivotal play in this game. FSU has GT backed up and Giorgio Newberry has a bead on Thomas on the sprint out play for a sack-safety, but Thomas pulls up and jukes him, then delivers a strike on the deep out pass. There was only one receiver in the pattern. |
1-10 | at Gt36 | 4-2-5 | Marshall, M. rush for 4 yards to the GT40 (Northrup, R.). | Triple option. NLS has a free shot on the dive back and whiffs. |
2-6 | at Gt40 | 4-2-5 | Thomas, J. rush for 60 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN GT, TOUCHDOWN, clock 02:22. | Triple option. Hoskins needs to play inside leverage and trust his teammates to handle the pitch. Instead he overruns it and there is no one behind him. Ramsey very nearly chases this play down from behind but only manages to rearrange Thomas's jersey. This is the problem with the option. You can defend it right 20 times in a row and then give up a 60 yard run. |
Butker, H. kick attempt good.
Florida State 13, Georgia Tech 10 | The 2nd down play in the end zone may have been the turning point in the game. Such a huge momentum swing.
FSU: Illegal substition on PAT. Declined
Drive: 4 plays, 94 yards, TOP 01:46
Butker, H. kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, touchback.
1-10 | at Fs25 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 02:22.
1-10 | at Fs25 | 10 Pistol | Cook, D. rush for 1 yard to the FS26 (Davis, P.;Freeman, K.). | Kareem Are gets completely whipped, allowing penetration and forcing Cook to flatten his path and allowing the rest of the defense to rally. |
2-9 | at Fs26 | 10 Pistol Trips | Golson, E. pass complete to Whitfield, K. for 9 yards to the FS35, 1ST DOWN FS (Austin, Law.). | Bubble screen to the field. Nice blocking by the receivers. |
1-10 | at Fs35 | 10 Gun | Golson, E. rush for 2 yards to the FS37 (Austin, Lan.). | Golson hangs around in the pocket for a while but can't seem to find anyone open and eventually runs for a short gain. |
2-8 | at Fs37 | 10 Gun | Golson, E. pass complete to Cook, D. for 19 yards to the GT44, 1ST DOWN FS (Mitchell, B.). | Middle screen. This is a neat call against a three man rush as the center and tackles handle the pass rush while the guards release upfield to block for the back on the angle route. Clever play. |
1-10 | at Gt44 | 10 Gun Trips | Golson, E. pass complete to Rudolph, T. for 13 yards to the GT31, 1ST DOWN FS (Golden, J.). | Golson has a free rusher in his face and barely gets the throw off. Rudolph displays great body control on the bench route by grabbing the ball that's behind him and low. |
1-10 | at Gt31 | 10 Gun | Golson, E. pass complete to Whitfield, K. for 4 yards to the GT27 (Austin, Law.). | Georgia Tech blitzes the boundary linebacker, leaving man coverage to that side, including the safety on the slot receiver. Golson should read that side, but apparently doesn't spot the blitz and works the field side. |
2-6 | at Gt27 | 10 Gun | Golson, E. pass complete to Lane, E. for 6 yards to the GT21, 1ST DOWN FS (Milton, C.). | Double slants against off man coverage. Slightly late throw. |
1-10 | at Gt21 | 10 Gun | Golson, E. pass incomplete. | Really should have spent a timeout here as the offense looks unsettled. Golson scrambles out of a clean pocket before throwing it away, using up all the remaining clock. Terrible decision. If there's nothing open, throw it out of bounds over a receiver's head. |
2-10 | at Gt21 | Timeout Florida State, clock 00:06.
2-10 | at Gt21 | Aguayo, R. field goal attempt from 38 GOOD, clock 00:00.
Florida State 16, Georgia Tech 10 | FSU had so many opportunities to build a bigger lead and missed on all of them.
1-G | at Fs35 | End of half, clock 00:00. |
