Facing the toughest team in the ACC, the Noles put up a near repeat of the FSU-Virginia game from 18 days ago. Virginia built up a big early lead. FSU got back in it and kept it close in the 2nd half. And then the Hoos pulled away at the end.
There were the usual Seminoles-Cavaliers events. Weird injuries: Darion Atkins left the game with help after a collision with Michael Ojo, and returned later after his ankle had been taped. Poor shooting: the Noles made just 3-17 3-pointers. And a grinding, methodic tempo.
In the end, the talent of Virginia was too much to overcome. After cutting the lead to five with 7:11 to play, the Noles were outscored 14-5 down the stretch, for a 58-44 Hoos win.
Xavier Rathan-Mayes led FSU with 13 points, but made just 1-8 3s. Phil Cofer and Devon Bookert each scored nine, while Montay Brandon grabbed eight rebounds.
It was a disappointing, though predictable, end to the guaranteed portion of the season.
Now we'll wait and see if the Noles will play in the NIT or CBI, or if they're done for the year. I seriously doubt an NIT invite is coming, but the Noles should (and would, I believe) accept a CBI bid.
