Florida State football film review: Boston College 2nd quarter

Full video breakdown of FSU's 2nd quarter v. BC, found only at Tomahawk Nation.

Every week we break down the result of the previous Florida State game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Boston College? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

Read to find out. Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

For other quarters, visit the film review section (All quarters up by Wednesday evening).

Share this on FB and tweet it using the buttons/icons on this page. If we don't get big numbers on these, they will stop. They take far too long to put together to have a small payoff.

Please ask any questions you may have in the comment section!

1-10 at Bc48 4-2-5 Wade,D rush for 2 yards to the 50 yardline (Hoskins, R.). Counter trey with the QB faking a handoff to the back and keeping. Neat play. Great job by Hoskins on controlling the puller and not giving the QB a clear cut, then shedding and making the tackle.
2-8 at Bc50 4-2-5 Wade,D rush for 4 yards to the FS46 (Smith, T.). Shovel triple option with power blocking. They're reading Walker and he takes the shovel option, tackling the back. Pugh maintains outside leverage on the QB and turns him back inside where Smith cleans up the play.
3-4 at Fs46 PENALTY BC false start 5 yards to the BC49.
3-9 at Bc49 4-2-5 Nascar Wade,D pass intercepted by Brutus, L. at the FS13, Brutus, L. return 0 yards to the FS13, out-of-bounds. Great play by Brutus. FSU is in man free coverage and normally the safety would not be a factor in a fade route, but Brutus recognizes that there's no deep threat to the other side of the field and gets over top of it. Good decision to trust Ramsey's coverage and go for the pick.
Drive: 8 plays, 22 yards, TOP 04:17
FLORIDA STATE drive start at 13:08. Practically speaking, the INT is as good as a punt, just one play earlier.
1-10 at Fs13 21 Golson, E. pass incomplete to Rudolph, T. (Johnson,J), PENALTY FS illegal block 6 yards to the FS7, NO PLAY. Play action 7 step drop. Golson is on the money on the corner route and Rudolph just drops it. It's a bit of an awkward angle. Rudolph needs to get further around and catch this with his hands instead of letting it get into his body.
1-16 at Fs07 11 Gun Golson, E. rush for 14 yards to the FS21 (Mcclary,G). FSU is trying to throw quick game and the offensive line is cut blocking. Kareem Are completely fails to get his man on the ground or even slow him down significantly and he is in Golson's face as soon as he sets up in the pocket. Golson spins out of tackles in the endzone. Twice. That's a move you can't even pull off in Madden. This is why Golson is playing...there is zero question that this would be a sack-safety with Maguire.
2-2 at Fs21 11 Gun Trey Cook, D. rush for loss of 1 yard to the FS20 (Gutapfel,T). Packaged play, inside zone with a bubble. Brock Ruble makes an awful attempt at a block and allows a free rusher into the backfield who makes the tackle for loss.
3-3 at Fs20 11 Gun Trips Golson, E. pass complete to Whitfield, K. for 10 yards to the FS30, 1ST DOWN FS (Johnson,J). Interesting route concept. Kind of a combination of snag and mesh. Whitfield is wide open on the snag route.
1-10 at Fs30 10 Gun Stack Cook, D. rush for 2 yards to the FS32 (Gutapfel,T). Inside zone. Martinez and Bell combo the DT, but one of them has to climb to the linebacker and neither does. Both stay with the DT and the unblocked backer makes the tackle.
2-8 at Fs32 01 Empty Golson, E. pass complete to Cook, D. for loss of 4 yards to the FS28 (Daniels,S). Fake rollout, throwback screen. Really good job of the BC safety to read his keys and not get fooled by the pocket movement. This play assumes that the safety will be held by the pocket movement long enough for the linemen to get out in front of the back.
3-12 at Fs28 11 Gun Golson, E. pass incomplete to Wilson, J.. Deep fade route to Bobo. Really good coverage by the BC cornerback. Bobo has to get a better release and maintain more separation from the sideline as the route develops so the QB has a place to put the ball.
4-12 at Fs28 Beatty, C. punt 56 yards to the BC16, out-of-bounds. BC brings heavy pressure and almost gets there but Beatty uncorks a boomer way downfield and just out of bounds. Tremendous punt.
Drive: 6 plays, 15 yards, TOP 03:19 Just not executing offensively. No single major culprit.
BOSTON COLLEGE drive start at 09:49.
1-10 at Bc16 4-2-5 Wade,D rush for 16 yards to the BC32, 1ST DOWN BC (Andrews, N.). Jet sweep motion, qb keep, with power blocking up front. Reggie Northrup gets wrong armed by the pulling guard and eventually pancaked.
1-10 at Bc32 4-2-5 Wade,D sacked for loss of 6 yards to the BC26 (Nnadi, D.). Tremendous bull rush by Nnadi pushes the guard back into the QB's lap, then sheds and records the sack. Great rush.
2-16 at Bc26 4-2-5 Hilliman,J rush for no gain to the BC26 (Ramsey, J.). Inside zone read, give to the back. The back needs to stick this up in the hole as there is a lane. Instead he bounces it and get tracked down by Ramsey.
3-16 at Bc26 4-2-5 Nascar Wade,D rush for 14 yards to the BC40 (Brutus, L.;Sweat, J.). Derwin James is actually in the game lined up as a DE and rushing the passer as part of FSU's dime rabbit package. BC is exploiting the pass rushing personnel package with a QB draw that almost gains a first down. Right call against the right defense.
4-2 at Bc40 Howell,A punt 48 yards to the FS12, Wilson, J. return 0 yards to the FS12.
Drive: 4 plays, 24 yards, TOP 02:48
FLORIDA STATE drive start at 07:01.
1-10 at Fs12 11 Gun Golson, E. pass incomplete to Cook, D., dropped pass. Flat route to Dalvin Cook is gonna go for a long way, if he just catches the ball. Which he doesn't.
2-10 at Fs12 21 Bunch Golson, E. rush for 5 yards to the FS17 (Milano,M). Play action rollout. Izzo doesn't get into his route cleanly and isn't in proper phase with the QB. Golson elects to keep and gets a decent gain on first down. Much more decisive play outside the pocket than we've seen from Golson for the most part.
3-5 at Fs17 10 Gun Stack Golson, E. pass complete to Rudolph, T. for 13 yards to the FS30, 1ST DOWN FS (Simmons,J). BC blitzes both linebackers, vacating the middle of the underneath coverage and Golson hits Rudolph perfectly on the slant.
1-10 at Fs30 10 Gun Trips Golson, E. rush for 4 yards to the FS34 (Simmons,J). FSU tries to roll the pocket, but Kareem Are's feet are slow and he allows penetration. Golson tucks it and gets what he can out of the play.
2-6 at Fs34 21 Twins Cook, D. rush for 28 yards to the BC38, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Simmons,J). Same zone counter play FSU has run previously and Cook finds the ege. If the field were four inches wider, this play goes for a TD.
1-10 at Bc38 11 Gun Trey Golson, E. pass complete to Whitfield, K. for 7 yards to the BC31 (Yiadom,I). Outs to the field and Golson finds the zone vacated by the vertical route from the outside receiver.
2-3 at Bc31 11 Gun Trey Cook, D. rush for 3 yards to the BC28, 1ST DOWN FS (Moore,M). Inside zone. I think Cook can actually get the corner if he bounces this, but he cuts it back instead.
1-10 at Bc28 11 Gun Trey Golson, E. pass incomplete to Izzo, R.. Play action rollout. Golson finally decides to throw to Izzo in the flat after Izzo has started run blocking, and as a result the pass is almost intercepted. Gotta work on their communication on this.
2-10 at Bc28 10 Gun Trips Golson, E. pass complete to Rudolph, T. for no gain to the BC28 (Moore,K). Tunnel screen to the wide side of the field. Both Kermit and Lane miss their blocks, dooming the play. Not sure I like running this play from the opposite hash.
3-10 at Bc28 11 Gun Trey Cook, D. rush for 3 yards to the BC25 (Johnson,J;Landry,H). FSU is again trying to catch BC is a DL game with a power run but don't get the look they expect.
4-7 at Bc25 Aguayo, R. field goal attempt from 42 MISSED - wide left, spot at BC25, clock 01:59. Welp.
Drive: 11 plays, 63 yards, TOP 05:02 Pretty positive drive, but you gotta cash it in with points.
BOSTON COLLEGE drive start at 01:59.
1-10 at Bc25 4-2-5 Willis,M rush for 18 yards to the BC43, 1ST DOWN BC (Ramsey, J.). Lead draw play is executed really well by BC. Great block by the fullback.
1-10 at Bc43 4-2-5 Willis,M rush for 4 yards to the BC47 (Northrup, R.). Power run. Josh Sweat squeezes the hole of out existence, forcing the back to bounce and keeping Reggie Northrup clean to make the tackle.
2-6 at Bc47 4-2-5 Willis,M rush for loss of 4 yards to the BC43 (Smith, T.). Faking the jet sweep, qb dive play from earlier, BC hands off to the other back. Terrance Smith and Jalen Ramsey are not fooled and drop the back for a loss.
3-10 at Bc43 3-2-6 Willis,M rush for 3 yards to the BC46 (Newberry, G.). Lead draw again, but Newberry controls his man and dives that the feet of the back on the way by to bring him down.
4-7 at Bc46 End of half, clock 00:00.
Drive: 4 plays, 21 yards, TOP 01:59
