It's the Florida State Football Film Review. Every week we break down the result of the previous Florida State game. Who really played well for the Seminoles? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?
All analyzed plays will eventually appear in the Florida State Film Review section of the website. We do not analyze plays in garbage time.

Observations:
- A positive takeaway from this game was the play of the defensive tackles. Derrick Nnadi, Demarcus Christmas and Walvenski Aime all played very well, particularly in the second half vs the run. This is big for FSU to be able to get stops on first down and put the opponent behind the chains on 2nd and 3rd down. Fred Jones did not have his best game and did not see as many snaps as a result.
- The concerns at linebacker are still there. Matthew Thomas still struggled in his run fits and missed several key run/pass keys that led to him being out of position in coverage. True freshman Dontavious Jackson saw his fair share of playing time, coming up big on the 4th down stop for FSU. Perhaps we will see more of him as he appears to have earned it.
- Josh Sweat is clearly not healthy. He was effective in anchoring and playing the run but is a liability in space as he’s unable to re-direct or move very well laterally.
- FSU has a glaring weakness at the Star position. UNC had a similar gameplan as Louisville to attack the edge and force Marcus Lewis to take on blocks and play physical, an area he still struggles. In defending the pass, part of FSU’s plan was to play Lewis man to man on Ryan Switzer in the slot. Switzer is an elite college slot receiver and Lewis was clearly outmatched. Though Lewis has good coverage skills, he does not have the ability nor is he refined enough in his technique to cover a player like Switzer. FSU brought true freshman Kyle Meyers in at Star for a few series and he had his share of busts and eye violations as well.
- Cornerback Marquez White did not play well. FSU played more Cover 2 to the field and used White as a force defender on runs and passes to the perimeter. White struggled with his fits in this role and was unable to get off blocks effectively. He doesn’t have the physicality to consistently win in those situations and teams are smart to go at him.
- FSU misses Derwin James(duh). Nate Andrews plays hard but is limited physically. He has average speed and overall athleticism and teams are able to take advantage of this. It is most evident on perimeter runs/passes where Andrews is asked to trigger and run the alley. Closing speed (or lack thereof) at that position can be the difference between a 2 yard gain and a 7 yard gain.
It doesn’t take a film review to recognize that the entire secondary is in disarray. But after watching the film more closely, here are two specific areas where we can recognize problems:
- Lack of Communication: A clear example of this is the blown coverages vs stacks or nasty(tight) splits by the receivers. The two defenders playing the stack have to communicate and be prepared to pass off or stay on their man as the routes are distributed.
- Lack of Awareness: Improper alignment by the corners was a big issue vs UNC. Pre snap alignment of the corner is dependent on where the ball is placed(on or between the hashes), where the ball is in relation to the endzone, and what blitz and/or coverage is called. There is no excuse for misalignment from a corner at this point in the season. The other area we see lack of awareness is in relation to where the sticks are located on key passing downs. The location of the first down marker should dictate the coverage technique and/or the depth of a drop in zone, particularly on third down passing situations.
There are legit concerns about effort and loafs. Perhaps the most frustrating part of watching the defense is at times the lack of urgency or effort in running to the football, particularly when it happens in a tie game in the 4th quarter. Not sure what the fix is here but hopefully this will be a clear point of emphasis for the defensive staff and players this week in practice.
