Florida State film review: Defense v. UF

The FSU defense dominated a really bad UF offense.

It's the Florida State Football Film Review. Every week we break down the result of the previous Florida State game. Who really played well for the Seminoles? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

All analyzed plays will eventually appear in the Florida State Film Review section of the website. We do not analyze plays in garbage time.

Amazingly, this content is free. Please keep it that way by sharing it on Facebook.

Observations:

  • We preface these observations with some notes about the UF offense and offer extra perspective on the battle between the Florida O and the FSU D. UF QB Austin Appleby did not show much pocket presence, timing with throws or consistent accuracy at any level of the field. UF called the game as if they have a QB they don’t really trust to be able to open up the offense. UF has a very good RB in Jordan Scarlett but has other issues at the skill positions as well. Antonio Callaway is very talented but struggles with consistency and players like Brandon Powell and C’yontai Lewis are undersized at their respective positions. Freshman WR Tyree Cleveland is a legit deep threat but Appleby is not consistent enough with the deep ball to make the defense respect it. The offensive line has dealt with injuries and lacks any depth.
  • With that in mind, we can still observe that the FSU defense played a great game. They did would a good defense should do vs a bad offense: dominate. This started with controlling the line of scrimmage and playing mostly good coverage in the back seven.
  • A key component to UF’s gameplan was to “trade” or shift the formation pre-snap to force FSU to communicate, adjust alignment and be consistently gap sound in their run fits. FSU handled this very well from the start of the game. The 13 yard run by Scarlett that UF hit on the first drive was due to missed tackles, not bad alignment. Aside from that, FSU held the UF run game in check all game.
  • Personnel-wise, FSU mixed their 3-4 base and 4-2-5 on 1st and 2nd downs. This is something we have seen a lot over these past few weeks, particularly as FSU has faced less spread teams and feels more comfortable keeping Pugh on the field rather than an extra defensive back.
  • The plan for 3rd down was a little different this week as FSU had two different packages prepared. The first was the typical Money personnel with Kyle Meyers at Star, AJ Westbrook down at Money, and Ermon Lane and Trey Marshall at deep safety. FSU played mostly man coverages from this look. The second package was new. It still consisted of 4-1-6 personnel but had Brian Burns and Carlos Becker standing up on the edges, Josh Sweat standing up over the center and DeMarcus Walker and Derrick Nnadi with their hand down over the guards. The back six consisted of Thomas, McFadden, White, Lane, Marshall, and Westbrook. FSU effectively disguised coverage and mixed blitzes from this look had UF confused all night. Kudos to the defensive staff that put together a great plan that the players could execute and led to UF being 0/12 on 3rd down.
New 3rd down package from FSU
  • The defensive line continued to be a dominant group led by Derrick Nnadi and DeMarcus Walker. Nnadi has become a player that demands double teams and as a result, players around him are getting more 1-on-1 opportunities. It doesn’t take a film review to recognize the effect Walker had on the game vs both the run and pass.
  • FSU played a ton of Cover 2. This allowed the corners to play aggressive vs the run, vs screens and jump any short routes to the flat. FSU had no concerns for Appleby to threaten them vertically. Marquez White had one of his best games as a Seminole. At times it looked like he knew what play was coming and made a number of impact plays. This was not one of McFadden’s better games. He particularly struggled in press coverage. Despite the interception numbers on the season, he still has a ways to go in refining his press technique in getting hands on the receiver and moving his feet to mirror receivers at the release.
  • After another great performance from the defense, it’s clear there has been improvement since the beginning of the season in a few key areas:

-Health of the defensive line.

-Less coverage busts and mis-fits in the run game from the linebackers.

-Better synergy between the coaches and players in the secondary as it relates to their roles and what they are being asked to execute.

  • As we’ve cautioned, the defense has faced some bad offenses down the stretch, they haven’t faced much tempo and they haven’t faced a running QB. Because of this it’s hard to say just how much the defense has improved. Nonetheless, they have not disappointed as they closed out the year doing what they should: make bad offenses look bad.

Review

D-D AT Formation Play Analysis
1-10 at Uf35 FS ball on FS35.
Logan Tyler kickoff 65 yards to the UF0, touchback.
1-10 at Uf25 Appleby,A. at QB for Florida.
1-10 at Uf25 3-4 Appleby,A. MR pass complete to Goolsby,D. for 5 yards to the UF30 (Tarvarus McFadden), clock 14:37. UF trades the TE to balance the formation then runs waggle. FSU in Cover 2 and McFadden gets a little too much depth and is late to come off on the TE that leaks to the flat.
2-5 at Uf30 3-4 Scarlett,J. rush over left end for 13 yards to the UF43, 1ST DOWN UF (Trey Marshall), clock 14:09. Counter off Inside Zone. Pugh is unblocked at the LOS but whiffs on the tackle. Hoskins and Westbrook also miss and Scarlett is able to break contain.
1-10 at Uf43 3-4 Callaway,A. rush ER for 24 yards to the FS33, 1ST DOWN UF, out-of-bounds (A.J. Westbrook), clock 13:41. Nice play design by UF as they go trips bunch to the boundary and show toss action to the trip but pitch it to the receiver on an end around. Good script play that UF knew they could hit from watching film. Walker is contain and does not have the speed to slow down Callaway.
1-10 at Fs33 3-4 Appleby,A. screen pass complete to Perine,L. for 1 yard to the FS32 (Tarvarus McFadden), clock 13:06. FSU in Cover 1 with a Sam blitz called. Poor execution from UF as Appleby rushes the throw to the RB on the swing. Needs to look this off longer to force the backers to move and allow the RB to get wider with his route. Good athleticism by Sweat to chase this down and McFadden also does a nice job to recognize the play and come off his man.
2-9 at Fs32 3-4 Appleby,A. sideline pass complete to Perine,L. for 25 yards to the FS7, 1ST DOWN UF, out-of-bounds (Matthew Thomas), clock 12:44. UF runs the RB on a wheel down the sideline to the boundary. Thomas is slow to see the back out and thus late getting over to it. Similar play that Louisville hit on FSU earlier in the season.
1-G at Fs07 3-4 Perine,L. rush up middle for no gain to the FS7 (Derrick Nnadi;Josh Sweat), clock 12:01. Zone Read, Appleby gives. UF tries to block Nnadi 1-on-1 and that is a bad idea. He plays the reach and then sheds to make the tackle. Good technique by Christmas here to hold the point vs the double team as Sweat squeezes and prevents the cutback.
2-G at Fs07 3-4 Appleby,A. MR pass incomplete to Lewis,C. (Ro'Derrick Hoskins), clock 11:33. UF trades pre-snap and sends a tight trips bunch to the field. FSU correctly adjusts and properly aligns. Really poor run fake from UF. FSU appears to have everyone covered up here in coverage and Appleby throws low to the TE who is leaking late into a route.
3-G at Fs07 4-1-6 Appleby,A. sideline pass complete to Powell,B. for 5 yards to the FS2 (Trey Marshall), clock 11:12. New 3rd down package from FSU with Nnadi and Walker with their hand down and Burns, Sweat and Becker standing up at the LOS. UF aligns in a 2x2 double stack and has a receiver open over the middle but Appleby doesn't see him. He checks down to the flat to the boundary where Marshall is in tight coverage.
4-G at Fs02 Timeout Florida State, clock 11:03.
4-G at Fs02 4-2-5 Appleby,A. crossing pass incomplete to Powell,B., QB hurry by Trey Marshall. UF runs another tight bunch to the field and FSU brings pressure from that side, blitzing Westbrook and Marshall. There's a receiver open in the back of the endzone but the pressure forces a bad throw. Lane has to be better in coverage here as he gets too wide and gives up the inside.
Drive: 9 plays, 73 yards, TOP 04:01
Drive: 10 plays, 65 yards, TOP 04:45
1-10 at Uf32 FLORIDA drive start at 06:14.
1-10 at Uf32 4-2-5 Scarlett,J. rush over right guard for 1 yard to the UF33 (Trey Marshall;Josh Sweat), clock 05:48. UF runs split zone off jet action. FSU blitzes Marshall from the field and slants the DL to the boundary. Nnadi and Christmas are like brick walls taking on double teams and Hoskins and Sweat converge from each side to give Scarlett nowhere to go.
2-9 at Uf33 4-2-5 Appleby,A. sacked for loss of 8 yards to the UF25 (Josh Sweat), fumble by Appleby,A. recovered by FS DeMarcus Walker at UF27, DeMarcus Walker for 3 yards to the UF24. FSU in Tampa 2 with a twist up front. FSU takes away Appleby's first read and he gives up on the rest of the progression. He tries to leave the pocket but Nnadi pancakes the RT and Appleby has nowhere to go. Sweat shows great effort as he goes airborne to sack the QB and force the fumble.
Drive: 2 plays, minus 5 yards, TOP 00:45
1-10 at Uf09 FLORIDA drive start at 04:40.
1-10 at Uf09 3-4 Scarlett,J. rush over left tackle for 3 yards to the UF12 (Matthew Thomas), clock 04:17. Inside Zone to the field. FSU has a run blitz called playside with Pugh coming off the edge and Sweat slanting into the B gap. Sweat gets a hair too far inside but Thomas does a nice job of scraping from the backside and making the tackle.
2-7 at Uf12 4-2-5 Powell,B. rush ER for loss of 2 yards to the UF10 (Marquez White), clock 03:42. UF runs jet sweep to the field where FSU is in Cover 2. Great recognition and technique by White to to step inside the receiver and make the play behind the LOS.
3-9 at Uf10 4-2-5 Appleby,A. sideline pass incomplete to Powell,B., clock 03:17. FSU in 2 man under with McFadden on the #3 receiver. McFadden is beaten badly at the LOS on an arrow to the flat but Appleby makes a really poor throw that falls incomplete.
4-9 at Uf10 Townsend,J. punt 38 yards to the UF48, Nyqwan Murray return -1 yards to the UF49 (Thompson,Ch.).
Drive: 3 plays, 1 yards, TOP 01:30
1-10 at Uf25 FLORIDA drive start at 14:47.
Injured player for UF is #29-Taylor. Assisted off the field.
1-10 at Uf25 4-2-5 Appleby,A. WL pass complete to Callaway,A. for 7 yards to the UF32, out-of-bounds (A.J. Westbrook), clock 14:40. UF motions trips to the field and throws a screen out wide. FSU doesn't bump their backers and UF has numbers. Good job of Westbrook to run the alley and limit the gain.
2-3 at Uf32 4-2-5 Scarlett,J. rush right for 3 yards to the UF35, 1ST DOWN UF (Ro'Derrick Hoskins), clock 13:56. Outside Zone to the field. Marshall does a good job to set the edge but Hoskins can't get off the block of the guard as he pursues inside out. White makes another great play as he slips inside the outside receiver and trips up the RB as he tries to make a cut upfield.
1-10 at Uf35 4-2-5 Appleby,A. deep pass incomplete to Cleveland,T., clock 13:41. FSU blitzes Marshall from the field and Westbrook is matched up 1-on-1 with Cleveland in the slot. UF attacks him vertically down the seam and Westbrook is in great position running step for step with Cleveland and the ball is slightly overthrown.
2-10 at Uf35 4-2-5 Scarlett,J. rush over left tackle for 5 yards to the UF40 (Josh Sweat;Trey Marshall), clock 13:24. UF motions to an unbalanced nub formation to the field and runs a halfback dive. Sweat is two gapping here over the TE and is able to shed to make the play. Marshall needs to be a step quicker on his run fit and squeeze.
3-5 at Uf40 4-1-6 Appleby,A. crossing pass complete to Callaway,A. for 4 yards to the UF44 (Tarvarus McFadden), clock 12:37. FSU rushes 6 with Cover 1 behind. McFadden is matched up with Callaway to the single receiver side. He is unable to get any jam and allows a free release inside on the slant.
4-1 at Uf44 3-4 Appleby,A. rush quarterback sneak for 1 yard to the UF45, 1ST DOWN UF (DeMarcus Walker), clock 12:26. QB sneak and Appleby picks it up with a second effort.
1-10 at Uf45 3-4 Scarlett,J. rush left for no gain to the UF45 (Ro'Derrick Hoskins), clock 11:58. Same halfback dive play but FSU has switched personnel and has Walker and Pugh aligned to the strong side of the formation. Nnadi is head up the center but slants to the playside A gap at the snap to occupy the guard and leave Hoskins unblocked to the ball. Nice fill and finish by Hoskins.
2-10 at Uf45 4-2-5 Appleby,A. crossing pass complete to Callaway,A. for 5 yards to the 50 yardline (Ro'Derrick Hoskins), clock 11:15. Callaway finds a soft spot in the Cover 2 zone to the boundary.
3-5 at Uf50 4-1-6 Appleby,A. MR pass complete to Powell,B. for 4 yards to the FS46 (Marquez White), clock 10:23. UF aligns in a tight trips bunch but motions the outside receiver wide past the numbers. White shows great awareness here. He doesn't follow the receiver all the way to the numbers as he anticipates a flat route from the bunch. He's able to jump the route by Powell and minimize the gain.
4-1 at Fs46 3-4 Scarlett,J. rush TL for 3 yards to the FS43, 1ST DOWN UF (Jacob Pugh), clock 09:55. UF trades the trips bunch to the field and runs a toss from gun. FSU adjusts very well here and Westbrook is there to make the play behind the line to gain but he can't finish the tackle.
1-10 at Fs43 3-4 Scarlett,J. rush over right end for 9 yards to the FS34, out-of-bounds (Ermon Lane), clock 09:15. Outside Zone to the field. Pugh sets the edge. Walker Walker splits the double team but gets too far upfield and Hoskins is too wide in his fit, creating a lane. This is also a rare time where Nnadi gets reached by the center. Taylor has a chance to make the tackle but can't finish. This really good running between the tackles by Scarlett, excellent vision and strength.
2-1 at Fs34 3-4 Scarlett,J. rush over left end for 7 yards to the FS27, 1ST DOWN UF (Levonta Taylor), clock 08:34. HB dive again from the same unbalanced formation. Pugh and Walker spill this to Taylor but he's unable to finish the tackle at the LOS.
1-10 at Fs27 4-2-5 Appleby,A. sideline pass incomplete to Powell,B., clock 08:12. UF fakes jet sweep to the slot and runs the RB on a wheel down the sideline vs Cover 3 from FSU. This probably is open if Appleby would show some patience but instead he quickly checks down to the flat with a throw that goes over the head of his target.
2-10 at Fs27 4-2-5 Perine,L. rush over right end for 6 yards to the FS21 (Ro'Derrick Hoskins;Ermon Lane), clock 07:50. UF motions from trips closed to ace pro-twins and runs power to the TE. Hoskins doesn't bump with the motion and thus is late getting to the RB from the backside. Burns is the playside DE here and needs to hold up better vs the TE as he is easily reached.
3-4 at Fs21 4-2-5 Appleby,A. ML pass incomplete to Callaway,A. (Marquez White), QB hurry by Trey Marshall, clock 07:23. FSU blitzes Westbrook and Marshall to the field with Cover 2 behind. Another great play by White to read the recognize the whip route by the receiver and drive on the throw to break it up.
4-4 at Fs21 Pineiro,E. field goal attempt from 38 GOOD, clock 07:19.
Florida State 10, Florida 3
Drive: 16 plays, 54 yards, TOP 07:28
1-10 at Uf15 FLORIDA drive start at 04:14.
1-10 at Uf15 3-4 Scarlett,J. rush left for 2 yards to the UF17 (Derrick Nnadi), clock 04:01. Outside Zone to the field. Nnadi lined up in 2i over Martez Ivey who is not playing at 100%. Nnadi destroys his reach block and chases this down as Scarlett is forced to turn up field after Westbrook sets the edge.
Injured player for UF is #73-Ivey. Walks off the field.
2-8 at Uf17 4-2-5 Appleby,A. crossing pass incomplete to Goolsby,D. (Demarcus Christmas), clock 03:37. This should've been a penalty on UF as the slot receiver covers up the TE who goes out in a route. Christmas sees the short drop from the QB and gets a hand up on the ball.
3-8 at Uf17 4-1-6 Appleby,A. sacked for loss of 8 yards to the UF9 (Brian Burns), clock 03:08. UF expecting blitz and only sends 3 out in a route. FSU plays Cover 3 and drops Marshall, Becker, Lane and Thomas as the underneath defenders. That's a lot of length. Nnadi twists and beats the RT but Appleby is able to avoid him before Burns brings him down.
4-16 at Uf09 Townsend,J. punt 55 yards to the FS36, Nyqwan Murray return 5 yards to the FS41 (Fulwood,A.).
Drive: 3 plays, minus 6 yards, TOP 01:32
1-10 at Uf27 4-2-5 Appleby,A. screen pass complete to Cronkrite,J. for loss of 2 yards to the UF25 (Matthew Thomas), clock 00:40. UF tries to hit a RB screen to the boundary. Excellent awareness and closing speed from Thomas here.
2-12 at Uf25 4-2-5 Cronkrite,J. rush right for 9 yards to the UF34 (DeMarcus Walker). Power from UF as FSU is playing safe at the end of the half. Walker two gapping on the TE and is able to shed and make the tackle.
3-3 at Uf34 End of half, clock 00:00.
Drive: 2 plays, 7 yards, TOP 00:00
Florida State 10, Florida 3
3-3 at Uf34 Start of 3rd quarter, clock 15:00, UF ball on UF35.
1-10 at Uf32 FLORIDA drive start at 13:43.
1-10 at Uf32 3-4 Appleby,A. sideline pass complete to Callaway,A. for 4 yards to the UF36, out-of-bounds. WR tunnel screen but Callaway catches this and turns outside. McFadden can't finish the tackle and is stiff armed into the ground before Thomas forces the ball carrier out of bounds.
2-6 at Uf36 3-4 Scarlett,J. rush up middle for 1 yard to the UF37 (Ro'Derrick Hoskins;Jacob Pugh), clock 13:00. UF trades both TE's to the field and runs Power. 3 UF blockers whiff at the point of attack here. Hoskins, Pugh and Thomas all makes them miss and converge on the ball carrier at the LOS.
3-5 at Uf37 4-1-6 Appleby,A. MR pass incomplete to Powell,B., clock 12:29. UF motions to a tight trips bunch and FSU blitzes McFadden from the boundary. FSU matches the routes perfectly to the bunch as Becker sits on a curl route from Powell at the first down line and breaks up the pass.
4-5 at Uf37 Townsend,J. punt 52 yards to the FS11, downed.
Drive: 3 plays, 5 yards, TOP 01:26
1-10 at Fs27 FLORIDA drive start at 11:26.
1-10 at Fs27 3-4 Appleby,A. deep pass incomplete to Lewis,C., clock 11:20. UF fakes run and tries to leak the TE across the formation and into a wheel route. Great recognition by Thomas here to spot the TE and run with him in coverage. Gotta think he gets beat on this if it's earlier in the season. Another terrible throw by Appleby doesn't give his receiver a chance.
2-10 at Fs27 4-2-5 Scarlett,J. rush over right end for 3 yards to the FS24 (DeMarcus Walker), clock 11:02. Counter off Inside Zone. UF tries to block Walker with the TE(Lewis). That's a big mismatch as Walker sheds to make the tackle.
3-7 at Fs24 4-2-5 Appleby,A. flag pass incomplete to Callaway,A., clock 10:31. UF has twins to the field and motions the outside receiver to a tight split. McFadden is trying to communicate the coverage to Taylor but I'm not sure they get it checked. Callaway gets separation from the loose coverage by McFadden on a corner route. It's actually a good throw from Appleby but Callaway drops the ball.
4-7 at Fs24 Pineiro,E. field goal attempt from 41 GOOD, clock 10:26.
Florida State 10, Florida 6
Drive: 4 plays, 3 yards, TOP 01:00
1-10 at Uf20 FLORIDA drive start at 05:32.
1-10 at Uf20 4-2-5 Scarlett,J. rush right for 1 yard to the UF21 (Fredrick Jones), clock 05:11. Counter trey from UF away from the bunch. Good squeeze and spill by Walker where Hoskins is outside to take on the second puller. Fred Jones makes a great play here as the 2i to beat the down block and make the play.
2-9 at Uf21 4-2-5 Appleby,A. crossing pass complete to Callaway,A. for 16 yards to the UF37, 1ST DOWN UF (Ermon Lane), clock 04:34. Cover 1 from FSU and McFadden again is beaten badly in press coverage on the slant from Callaway. He opens his hips outside and gets no hands on his jam to get himself completely out of position.
1-10 at Uf37 4-2-5 Appleby,A. deep pass incomplete to Cleveland,T., clock 04:06, QB hurry by DeMarcus Walker, clock 04:06. FSU blitzes Marshall and UF picks it up but Walker beats the RT to get pressure. UF tries to hit the Cleveland on a deep crosser but McFadden does a nice job to get depth in his coverage with no immediate threat to his side.
2-10 at Uf37 3-4 Perine,L. rush left for 3 yards to the UF40 (Trey Marshall;Tarvarus McFadden), clock 03:41. TE trade(yawn) and UF runs Inside Zone to the nub. McFadden is quick to set the edge and force Scarlett to turn upfield. Sweat takes on two blockers and Marshall is unblocked to the ball carrier.
3-7 at Uf40 PENALTY UF delay of game (Appleby,A.) 5 yards to the UF35, clock 03:17.
3-12 at Uf35 4-2-5 Appleby,A. deep pass incomplete (Marquez White), clock 02:47. UF max protects and runs play action on 3rd and long as they only send 3 out in a route. FSU has seven defenders dropped in Cover 2. Walker tries to beat the tackle outside and creates a lane for Appleby to leave the pocket. White vacates his zone to pressure the QB but is able to get his hands on the throw.
4-12 at Uf35 Townsend,J. punt 42 yards to the FS23, fair catch by Nyqwan Murray.
1-10 at Uf25 FLORIDA drive start at 12:51.
1-10 at Uf25 4-2-5 Appleby,A. crossing pass complete to Powell,B. for 8 yards to the UF33 (Matthew Thomas;Ro'Derrick Hoskins), clock 12:29. UF aligns in 2x2 and runs the outside receiver to the boundary on a quick in breaking route. FSU is in Cover 2 and the LBs are playing quite soft so Powell is able to find some room underneath.
2-2 at Uf33 4-2-5 Cronkrite,J. rush right for 10 yards to the UF43, 1ST DOWN UF (Ermon Lane), clock 12:08. Power out of ace pro twins. UF has found some success with this play because FSU is daring UF to run the ball late in the game. It's a 6 man box with Walker two gapping over the TE. Walker peaks inside the TE and Hoskins fits the same gap so there's no one to fit the outside until Lane comes up from his deep safety spot.
1-10 at Uf43 4-2-5 Cronkrite,J. rush over right guard for loss of 1 yard to the UF42 (Josh Sweat), clock 11:38. Same play. FSU has adjusted their look by aligning Sweat outside the TE and walking Lane up late into the box. It's a run blitz with Sweat slanting into the C gap, beating the TE and Thomas scraping over top. Cronkrite has nowhere to go.
2-11 at Uf42 4-2-5 Appleby,A. MR pass incomplete to Powell,B., clock 11:35. Same play we saw on first down of this drive. Appleby goes back to Powell on the quick in-route but the throw is inaccurate and Powell can't bring it in.
3-11 at Uf42 4-1-6 Appleby,A. sacked for loss of 3 yards to the UF39 (Brian Burns;Josh Sweat), clock 11:07. UF goes empty with trips to the boundary and two receivers to the trips run into each other on their routes. They also blow the pass protection as the RT lets Burns go free off the edge. This new 3rd down package from FSU really confused UF throughout the entire game.
4-14 at Uf39 Townsend,J. punt 43 yards to the FS18, Nyqwan Murray return -3 yards to the FS15, fumble forced by Thompson,Ch., fumble by Nyqwan Murray recovered by UF Harris,M. at FS12, Harris,M. for 12 yards to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 10:45. Maybe Murray should have fair caught the ball with the big lead but to me, this wasn't a very risky decision. More importantly, he just needs to hold onto the ball.
Drive: 5 plays, 14 yards, TOP 00:00
Pineiro,E. kick attempt good.
Florida State 24, Florida 13
Pineiro,E. kickoff 62 yards to the FS3, Kermit Whitfield return 36 yards to the FS39, out-of-bounds.
1-10 at Uf09 FLORIDA drive start at 08:11.
1-10 at Uf09 4-2-5 Appleby,A. deep out pass complete to Callaway,A. for 22 yards to the UF31, 1ST DOWN UF, clock 08:04. UF goes play action and runs Callaway on a deep crosser vs Cover 2. FSU LB's are able to get good depth in their drops but this is Appleby's best throw of the game. He steps up in the pocket and fits the ball into a small hole in the zone. McFadden seems to be in position to make a play on it if he leaves his feet.
1-10 at Uf31 4-2-5 Appleby,A. slant pass incomplete to Callaway,A. (Tarvarus McFadden), clock 07:42. McFadden is finally able to play the slant from press. He stays patient with the release, shuffles to stay in front and gets hands on the receiver. Callaway inexplicably fades on the route and allows McFadden to jump it but the ball goes through his hands.
2-10 at Uf31 4-2-5 Scarlett,J. rush up middle for 2 yards to the UF33 (Demarcus Christmas), clock 07:16. UF runs Zone Read to the TE. Walker slow plays the read and forces Appleby to give. FSU has a run blitz called with Christmas slanting into the A gap and Hoskins into the B gap. This messes up the blocking scheme for the UF OL as Hoskins gets penetration and stops the play at the LOS.
3-8 at Uf33 4-1-6 Appleby,A. sacked for loss of 11 yards to the UF22 (DeMarcus Walker), clock 06:40. FSU goes 2 man under vs a 2x2 look from UF. Amazing play by Walker here. He's lined up as a 3 tech and sides steps the guard before bull rushing through the center and RB on his way to the sack.
4-19 at Uf22 Townsend,J. punt 47 yards to the FS31, fair catch by Nyqwan Murray.
Drive: 4 plays, 13 yards, TOP 01:58

1-10 at Uf38 4-2-5 Appleby,A. sacked for loss of 12 yards to the UF26 (DeMarcus Walker), clock 04:01. Walker teeing off now. Uses a club and swim to beat the RT inside and get the sack.
2-22 at Uf26 4-2-5 Appleby,A. sideline pass complete to Cleveland,T. for 5 yards to the UF31, out-of-bounds, clock 03:42. UF runs smash to the boundary vs Cover 2. McFadden wisely sinks to the corner route and gives up the short gain.
3-17 at Uf31 4-1-6 Appleby,A. sacked for loss of 5 yards to the UF26 (Derrick Nnadi), fumble by Appleby,A. recovered by FS DeMarcus Walker at UF26. UF goes 3x1 to the boundary and FSU is in 2 man under. Walker at 3 tech again beats the guard and gets the initial pressure that forces Appleby to step up. FSU appears to have tight coverage downfield and Nnadi is able to work back to sack the QB and force the fumble.
Drive: 3 plays, minus 12 yards, TOP 01:14
