FSU practice report: Ryan Green back on offense

New, 201 comments

News, notes, and observations from the day's Florida State practice.

Including post-practice updates:

The Seminoles convened for their third spring practice today, after a session closed to the media on Thursday. On Wednseday, Jimbo Fisher bemoaned the team's energy, calling the practice one of the worst in which he's taken part. Today, under blue skies and before a number of visiting recruits, the 'Noles looked to reassert themselves in full pads.

In addition to the players already detailed as missing spring ball, linebacker Matthew Thomas (illness) was nowhere to be found, while new tight end Chris Casher (hamstring) rode the stationary bike, along with Sean Maguire, who's still in a walking boot that he was supposed to have shed by now. Sh'Mar Kilby-Lane was also on the bike today (hip flexor), as linebacker depth appears to once again be in jeopardy early. Mario Pender was not present.

The first-team offensive line, left to right, again consisted of Rod Johnson, Kareem Are, Alec Eberle, Wilson Bell, and Brock Ruble. The twos: Ethan Frith, David Robbins, Corey Martinez, Cole Minshew, and Rick Leonard, who switched from defense to offense this spring.

J.J. Cosentino continued to take the first quarterback snaps, followed by Deondre Francois and Malik Henry. Jacques Patrick, Marcus Lewis, and Trey Marshall all got first kick coverage reps. Tight ends caught balls from the QBs, and Ryan Izzo displayed outstanding footwork getting into and out of his cuts. And a familiar face was back with the running backs: Ryan Green, who had played RB before switching to corner, was back toting the rock. Fisher said of Green, "He's as explosive and fast as anybody on this team."

Pigg Harrison is battling turf toe, an unfortunate break for FSU, as he was one of the only players we've heard Fisher praise this spring. And Auden Tate is battling a groin injury.

Demarcus Christmas (hamstring) was participating in DL drills, but Fisher says he'll be kept from distance running. There seemed to be quite a bit more fire all around today, particularly from the defensive backs. Janarius Robinson continues to jog around in a shoulder sling, along with offensive players Ryan Hoefled and Jeremy Kerr.

Special Teams

Ricky Aguayo moved back a bit today, hitting field goals from 45 to get practice going.

Several 2018 recruits were at practice today, including Tallahassee DE Amari Gainer, WR Amari Burney, RB Thomas Fletcher, and RB Lorenzo Lingard.

Check back for our updated report in a bit, as we'll speak with Fisher and some players after practice.
