On Sunday night we learned Florida State would once again host a regional in Tallahassee and on Monday morning we found out who would be in that regional and what regional it would be paired with. The results are not great for FSU but not a surprise considering Florida State's struggle in the latter half of the season. Once again, the Tallahassee Regional was paired up with Gainesville, which will be the 'Noles next stop if they can make it through a fairly difficult Regional Tournament.
The No. 2 seed in the Tallahassee Regional is Southern Miss, the Conference USA champions. They finished the season with a 40-18 (20-10) record and have not played opponents that FSU has this year. The last meeting between Golden Eagles and the Seminoles was back in 1991 when the teams met quite frequently. Florida State holds the series edge 38-12.
Despite the very good record of Southern Miss, they were swept in a two game series against the No. 3 seed in the Tallahassee Regional, South Alabama. It also finished with a 40 win season, going 40-20 (21-9) before falling in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. FSU and USA have met fairly recently with the last matchup coming in 2013 where the 'Noles came out victorious 2-0. All-time, FSU has the series 36-26-1.
The No. 4 seed also hails from the state of Alabama in the Alabama State Hornets. After winning the SWAC Postseason Tournament by outscoring their opponents 62-24 in four games. ASU comes in at 38-14 with a perfect SWAC record of 24-0. The only other time Florida State has faced them in school history was last season where the 'Noles won 8-7.
The matchup and starting times for the series opener were announced earlier today. South Alabama will play Southern Miss on Friday at noon with Florida State vs. Alabama State to follow at 6 PM.
