41 days to FSU football: Thin group competes for top Seminole No. 41

The debates continue...

The No. 41 is far from the most glamorous uniform number— and the relatively small group to have earned postseason honors while wearing it at Florida State may just reflect that.

The only ‘Nole 41 to secure All-American honors of any kind was actually the last to wear it: defensive end Lorenzo Featherston, who is no longer with the team. In 2014, Featherston was named an Honorbale Mention Freshman All-American by both College Football News and CampusInsiders.com.

A couple of defensive backs are the only other Seminoles to earn a spot on today’s ballot, beginning with John Crowe, who was a first-team All-South Independent selection in 1968. Crowe’s 9 career interceptions are still tied for 19th in FSU history. And the only ‘Nole 41 drafted? That would be Gary Woolford, who was a sixth-round pick of the Houston Oilers in 1977.

The other FSU players to wear No. 41:

  • Bob Browning (1948)
  • Dwight Osha (1949)
  • Pat Versprille (1954)
  • Joe Holt (1956)
  • Dink Lawrence (1958)
  • Denny Schou (1959)
  • Bill Tinsley (1960)
  • Gene Roberts (1961-1963)
  • Bob Menendez (1964-1965)
  • Phil Cahoon (1972-1974)
  • Joe Demarest (1977)
  • Tommy Young (1979-1980)
  • Cedric Jones (1981-1984)
  • Ed Clark (1985-1987)
  • Chris Hall (1988-1989)
  • Tommy Henry (1990-1992)
  • Phillip Simpson (1993)
  • Jason Poppell (1994-1995)
  • Brian Allen (1996)
