Florida State football film review: Louisville 3rd quarter

New, 10 comments

Every Florida State play broken down, win or lose.

It's the Florida State Football Film Review. Every week we break down the result of the previous Florida State game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Louisville? Which players played poorly? Where did the coaches do well, and when did they screw up?

All analyzed quarters will eventually appear in the Florida State Film Review section of the website. Only three quarters are reviewed this week because the entire fourth quarter was garbage time.

Share this on FB and tweet it using the buttons/icons on this page. If we don't get big numbers on these, they will stop. They take far too long to put together to have a small payoff.

Please ask any questions you may have in the comment section!

D-D At Form Play Analysis
George, A. kickoff 48 yards to the FS17, downed. Kermit Whitfield badly misjudges this short kickoff and has to dive. For a kickoff. Seriously. Awful start.
1-10 at Fs17 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 15:00.
1-10 at Fs17 10 gun Dalvin Cook rush up middle for 5 yards to the FS22 (Hearns, J.). Counter play, Kareem Are slow feet doesn't get his down block which knocks Rick Leonard off his track. Dalvin Cook does really well to turn this into a gain. This sucks for FSU because it's a play with a very nice look v. this alignment.
2-5 at Fs22 10 gun Deondre Francois sideline pass incomplete to Dalvin Cook, QB hurry by Brown, D.. Straight dropback, Dickerson/Eberle/Are allow some pressure but this an error by Francois for working the wrong side. Jimbo Fisher is gesticulating wildly on the sideline. The side of the field Francois did not work had at least one open receiver, though BoBo Wilson's effort here is poor.
3-5 at Fs22 11 gun Deondre Francois middle pass incomplete (Hearns, J.). Credit Francois for sticking in the pocket here after previously seeing some ghosts. Pass pro is acceptable, though Dickerson/Are could do a better job not letting DT get depth. Pass is batted down due to great DT effort but the player Francois is throwing to does not look open. Cook is open on the check down for a likely first down. Freshman.
4-5 at Fs22 Logan Tyler punt 47 yards to the LOU31, Alexander, J. return 69 yards to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 13:49. This is an awful punt. FSU's coverage is boundary and Tyler kicks to the field. This creates poor angles for the coverage team, which does not tackle well but this is on the punter.
Drive: 3 plays, 5 yards, TOP 01:11 Freshman QB did not regain composure at halftime.
O'Hara, E. kick attempt good.
Louisville 42, Florida State 10
Creque, B. kickoff 55 yards to the FS10, Kermit Whitfield return 18 yards to the FS28 (Cannon, Z.;Iakopo, L.).
1-10 at Fs28 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 13:49.
1-10 at Fs28 11 Dalvin Cook rush left for 4 yards to the FS32 (Thomas, S.;Harvey-Clemons). Stretch left, well blocked, Cook should maybe hit play-side A gap but hits the opposite A-gap and then doesn't make the safety miss. 4 yards on first down is fine.
2-6 at Fs32 11 gun Deondre Francois sideline pass incomplete to Nyqwan Murray. Good play action, excellent blocking, Francois has all day and badly misses Murray on the sideline route.
3-6 at Fs32 10 gun Deondre Francois rush right for 2 yards to the FS34 (Alexander, J.;Cannon, Z.). Rick Leonard beat on a speed rush doesn't give Francois time to survey the field. Francois probably should scramble left instead of right, and has Cook for a checkdown and potential first down here, but hard to put that on a freshman QB.
4-4 at Fs34 Logan Tyler punt 41 yards to the LOU25, fair catch by Alexander, J.. Better punt
Drive: 3 plays, 6 yards, TOP 01:31
1-10 at Lou25 LOUISVILLE drive start at 12:18.
1-10 at Lou25 4-2-5 Smith, Je. rush left for 3 yards to the LOU28 (Demarcus Christmas). Zone read, Hoskins is quick to trigger and fill, Marshall is physical, Patti slow to react. Not a bad play, which is better than it had been.
2-7 at Lou28 4-2-5 Jackson, L. CU pass complete to Quick, J. for 19 yards to the LOU47, 1ST DOWN LOU (Nick Patti). Great job by Lamar Jackson to pick on Hoskins by looking him off and throwing into the void. Unacceptable linebacker play.
1-10 at Lou47 4-2-5 Jackson, L. rush for no gain to the LOU47 (DeMarcus Walker). Very well played by the defense. Play-action that Louisville hit earlier is recognized, Walker chips the tight end before Hoskins picks him up, everyone covers well, Walker pressures Jackson who barely gets back to LOS.
2-10 at Lou47 4-2-5 Jackson, L. rush right for 3 yards to the 50 yardline (DeMarcus Walker). Veer read, blocks are played pretty well up front, Walker is in good position and Jackson is a freak athlete to get three yards.
3-7 at Lou50 4-1-6 Jackson, L. slant pass incomplete to Bonnafon, R. (Marcus Lewis). This is strong pass defense. FSU rushes to keep Jackson in the pocket (he's more dangerous on scramble), has a spy and is paying tight man coverage. Even if Walker doesn't get a hand on the pass to bat it, Lewis might have broken this up.
4-7 at Lou50 King, M. punt 39 yards to the FS11, fair catch by Jesus Wilson. This is FSU's first defensived drive of the second half (punt return TD earlier) and it was a good one.
Drive: 5 plays, 25 yards, TOP 02:32
1-10 at Fs11 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 09:46.
1-10 at Fs11 10 gun Deondre Francois rush for no gain to the FS11 (Hearns, J.;Fields, D.). Designed QB draw, Dalvin Cook's block attempt here is poor and Francois could have also hit the B gap. This is one of those plays that the broadcast blamed on the offensive line but it wasn't the offensive line's fault.
2-10 at Fs11 10 gun Deondre Francois rush left for 4 yards to the FS15 (Williams, Ch.), PENALTY FS holding (Roderick Johnson) 5 yards to the FS6, NO PLAY. Another egregiously blown blitz pickup by Dalvin Cook that fans (and the broadcast) will surely blame on the offensive line. Louisville shifts to a bear front to occupy the three interior blockers, making Cook's blitz pickup essential. Cook wiffs. Whether he is hurt, not trusting his shoulder or simply saving himself for the NFL, this is unacceptable. The holding call on Rod Johnson is extremely iffy and largely a result of Cook's blown blitz pickup.
2-15 at Fs06 10 gun Deondre Francois CU pass incomplete to Auden Tate. Good pass protection, bad throw by Francois. Does not give Tate a chance to catch the football because it bounces and is way wide.
3-15 at Fs06 Deondre Francois crossing pass complete to Dalvin Cook for 8 yards to the FS14 (Kelsey, K.). This pressure one isn't on the offensive line, either. Appears to be I/O protection, tight end Izzo steps inside too far and can't recover to get to the blitzing outside linebacker. Credit Louisville for good blitz look here, too. Francois does a good job to step up but does not have the time to hit anyone deep and does well to get a few yards.
4-7 at Fs14 Logan Tyler punt 51 yards to the LOU35, downed. Good distance/hang time but this again looks to be a bit wide.
Drive: 3 plays, 3 yards, TOP 02:01 Pass protection is a team thing, here the running backs and tight ends made the offensive line look bad.
1-10 at Lou35 LOUISVILLE drive start at 07:45.
1-10 at Lou35 4-2-5 Samuel, T. rush right for 8 yards to the LOU43 (Nate Andrews). Well run reach play here by Louisville, action holds the backers though Rice should probably widen by a step upon motion. Well blocked by Louisville.
2-2 at Lou43 4-2-5 Radcliff, B. rush over left guard for 12 yards to the FS45, 1ST DOWN LOU (DeMarcus Walker;Demarcus Christmas). Couldn't see initial play though it looks like Hoskins fills timidly. Missed tackle by Pugh allows big yards. Christmas took on double team well.
1-10 at Fs45 4-2-5 Jackson, L. CU pass complete to Hikutini, C. for 17 yards to the FS28, 1ST DOWN LOU (Marquez White), PENALTY FS personal foul (Derrick Nnadi) 14 yards to the FS14, 1ST DOWN LOU. Good pass rush by Demarcus Walker, FSU is playing zone (pattern match), but Rice must sink deeper because he has no immediate threat to the flat. Instead he is distracted by the crosser which is being (poorly) covered by Hoskins. Beause Rice doesn't sink deeper, this is a very easy thow for Jackson. If he gets depth, this play is likely a sack or a short completion (which would be whiped out by the penalty to Nnadi, but...)
At this point, FSU shifts Walker to DT. Not sure why. Maybe Christmas was gassed. Maybe FSU thought it had a matchup advantage? Louisville runs right to his side every time after this to finish off the drive.
1-10 at Fs14 4-2-5 Radcliff, B. rush right for 11 yards to the FS3, 1ST DOWN LOU, out-of-bounds (Jacob Pugh). This could be a video in poor fundamentals. Jacob Pugh fails to keep outside arm free and allows himself to get hooked, Marcus Lewis doesn't get off a block well and then is too flat, missing a tackle. Credit Pugh for hustling back. Westbrook is play-side safety and I have absolutely no idea what he is looking at but he's very out of position.
1-G at Fs03 4-2-5 Jackson, L. rush right for 2 yards to the FS1 (DeMarcus Walker). Lead QB sweep from Louisville. Demarcus Walker beats a block, Nate Andrews keeps good leveage, Pugh gets double teamed. Jackson is a great player to be able to get two yards.
2-G at Fs01 4-2-5 Smith, Je. rush right for 1 yard to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 05:02. Simple lead play from Louisville, Pugh is doubled and doesn't have the bulk to resist. Emmet Rice almost stops this shooting a gap, Nate Andrews slow to react.
O'Hara, E. kick attempt good.
Louisville 49, Florida State 10
Drive: 6 plays, 65 yards, TOP 02:43
Creque, B. kickoff 63 yards to the FS2, Kermit Whitfield return 15 yards to the FS17 (Atkins, L.). Nothing is going right now.
1-10 at Fs17 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 05:02.
1-10 at Fs17 11 Deondre Francois crossing pass complete to Travis Rudolph for 23 yards to the FS40, 1ST DOWN FS (Williams, C.). Great pass protection on waggle, Francois hits Rudolph on a deep crosser.
1-10 at Fs40 11 gun Deondre Francois crossing pass incomplete to Jesus Wilson (Washington, T.), QB hurry by Cannon, Z.. Louisville is tipping a zone pressure here which could be recognized by the QB as there was plenty of time on the play clock. With the slide protection left Cook is hot. Francois could sight adjust and hot dump the ball to Cook against this unblocked defender, or could throw the out. Instead he throws the quick in to Wilson, which is not very well run (effort) and is tighly covered. This isn't a bad read it just might not be the best read. Winston used to hit Greene on that against this look all the time.
2-10 at Fs40 11 gun Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Travis Rudolph. Excellent job of pass protection by the offensive line as Kareem Are helps out Rod Johnson after Johnson looks like he will be beat on an inside move. Francois takes a deep attempt which looks to be a bit flatly thrown but could be completed if Rudolph had not been tangled up with the corner. FSU wanted a flag. This is a good read.
3-10 at Fs40 11 gun Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 13 yards to the FS27 (Harvey-Clemons). This is a superbly run blitz by Louisville. The Cardinals literally hit this thing on the run because FSU's play clock is ticking down. Cook does a good job in blitz pickup. Freshman guard Landon Dickerson must come off helping Leonard to pick up the second blitzer, but does not, leaving Ryan Izzo with an impossible block. Dickerson will probably become a great guard but he is not there yet.
4-23 at Fs27 Logan Tyler punt 51 yards to the LOU22, Alexander, J. return 61 yards to the FS17 (Jared Jackson). This is a good return combined with bad punt coverage. Jared Jackson and Hoskins are out of their lanes. The entire unit is too timid and needs to pursue this aggressively so the returner does not have time to gather himself. This should never happen with a punt of this quality. A pretty egregious BITB is missed by the officials after the inifial wave but it would still have been a 15-yard return if called.
Drive: 4 plays, 10 yards, TOP 01:54
1-10 at Fs17 LOUISVILLE drive start at 03:08.
1-10 at Fs17 4-2-5 Jackson, L. sideline pass intercepted by Tarvarus McFadden at the FS0, Tarvarus McFadden return 0 yards to the FS0, touchback. Louisville tries for the additional kill-shot here, and McFadden has good coverage on the fade and even if he did not this is a terrible throw by Jackson. If any team can make him just a passer it will have a chance to beat Louisville. Good luck.
Drive: 1 plays, 0 yards, TOP 00:06
1-10 at Fs20 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 03:02.
1-10 at Fs20 21 Dalvin Cook rush right for no gain to the FS20 (Richardson, D). Stretch. Cook missed an open cutback lane, one of the few Louisvlle left open, something that should be anticipated based on alignment. Dickerson does not overtake the DT on the double with Leonard before Leonard leaves to pick up the backer. Louisville is expecting run here all the way from this formation.
2-10 at Fs20 11 gun Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Travis Rudolph (Walker, R.), PENALTY LOU pass interference (Walker, R.) 15 yards to the FS35, 1ST DOWN FS, NO PLAY. Perfect pass protection from Florida State's line and this is a bad throw by Francois. Rudolph has the corner beat for a huge play and Francois underthrows it by a ton. It's so bad in fact that the corner bangs into Rudoph and FSU gets a lucky flag.
1-10 at Fs35 11 gun Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 11 yards to the FS24 (Greenard, J.). This is a well designed play by Florida State with play action going multiple different directions. FSU sliced up Ole Miss with this but Dalvin Cook knocks the right tackle off his block (Fisher confirmed it was Cook's error on coaches show) and Francois is sacked. Probably Dalvin Cook's worst game as a Seminole other than the Oregon fumble fest.
2-21 at Fs24 11 gun Dalvin Cook rush right for loss of 3 yards to the FS21 (Cannon, Z.;Brown, D.). 1) Louisville has no respect for the threat of FSU's athletic QB keeping the football because FSU does not use him that way. 2) Tight end Ryan Izzo does not make his block which prevents the pulling offensive linemen from making theirs. This is another examle of a bad block by a WR/TE/RB that the broadcast attributes to the "offensive line."
3-24 at Fs21 11 gun Dalvin Cook rush up middle for 3 yards to the FS24 (Bailey, D.). This is a give-up play.
4-21 at Fs24 Logan Tyler punt 47 yards to the LOU29, fair catch by Bonnafon, R.. This is a good punt. Tyler had two good punts before garbage time after his bad punt that was returned for a TD.
Drive: 4 plays, 4 yards, TOP 03:02
