Florida State’s elite athletes keep making the mistakes that result from poor coaching.

Welcome back to our weekly film review sessions of Florida State’s 2017 season. Every play broken down, with video and analysis.

As always, this content is best viewed on a computer or tablet, not on a phone.

Against Miami, FSU’s defense came out of the gates strong.

The plan of attack was simple: shut down running back Mark Walton and make quarterback Malik Rosier beat you through the air. For the most part, that strategy proved solid. The ’Noles did not allow Miami to cross over midfield before halftime.

Demarcus Christmas and company along the defensive line did a great job of controlling the line of scrimmage, forcing Walton to abandon some runs and take the tackle for loss. Rosier struggled to throw against FSU’s secondary early and the defense gave Florida State’s offense many opportunities to succeed.

In the first half, Miami’s seven drives all ended in punts.

The second half was a different story. Four of Miami’s seven drives after halftime ended in scores (one field goal, three touchdowns), including back-to-back 75-yard touchdown drives by the Hurricanes to win the game.

Rosier was more comfortable in the second half, regularly finding Braxton Berrios and Ahmmon Richards down the field to move the chains. Walton left this game with injury, but the ’Canes were still able to rush the ball for critical yards in key situations.

Overall, the final two drives of the game, which accounted nearly half of Miami’s total yards in the game, overshadowed what could have been a great defensive performance in this rivalry game.

FSU Defense vs. Miami

Play Down Distance Spot Formation Analysis
Play Down Distance Spot Formation Analysis
Miami drive start at 12:49
Rosier, M at QB for Miami. 1 10 UM04
Walton, M rush up middle for 7 yards to the UM11 (James, D;Marshall, T), clock 12:31. 1 10 UM04 4-2-5 Zone Read from Miami where they loop the TE around Burns and read him. Derwin has the C gap on this call based on the DL alignment but is 9 yards off the ball so Walton is able to find some room on the cut back before he is finally brought down. It's also possible that Burns missed a call to slant inside on this one. Tough to say without knowing the exact call.
Rosier, M screen pass incomplete to Walton, M (Sweat, J), clock 12:18. 2 3 UM11 4-2-5 Cover 1 with FSU rushing 5 while running a DT stunt. Miami has a HB screen called which should set up nicely vs man coverage. Fortunately for FSU, Sweat whips the left tackle and gets his hands up to deflect the pass. The stunt by the DTs also put Christmas in a position where he could defend the screen if it were caught.
Walton, M rush up middle for loss of 4 yards to the UM7 (Christmas, D), clock 12:01. 3 3 UM11 4-2-5 Neat coverage from FSU on third down. Man coverage vs twins to the field with safety help over top. Off man coverage to the boundary with Pugh dropping to rob anything underneath. Up front FSU slants the DL weak while blitzing Derwin off the edge from the field. Miami tries to run a pin-n-pull outside sweep that leads with the playside guard and center. Christmas gets a great jump on the ball and is able to easily beat the downblock of the tackle to get a huge TFL.
Feagles, Z punt 49 yards to the FS44, out-of-bounds. 4 7 UM07
Drive: 3 plays, 3 yards, 1:12 TOP
MIAMI drive start at 09:33. 1 10 UM20
Rosier, M crossing pass complete to Herndon, C for 9 yards to the UM29 (Marshall, T), clock 09:12. 1 10 UM20 4-2-5 Inside Zone/Slant RPO from Miami out of 2x2. This is the same play NCST ran 3x vs FSU. FSU in cover 1 with Marhsall over the slot. Poor technique from Marshall. He's late to roll down and reacts too slowly to the in-breaking route of the WR.
Rosier, M rush quarterback sneak for no gain to the UM29 (Christmas, D), clock 08:54. 2 1 UM29 4-2-5 Miami tries to rush to the line a QB sneak. Great plays by Nnadi and Christmas to stay low and hold their ground vs double teams, they stop this play on their own.
Timeout Miami, clock 08:52. 3 1 UM29
Rosier, M screen pass incomplete to Herndon, C, QB hurry by Burns, B, clock 08:47. 3 1 UM29 3-4 Miami goes 22 personnel and then runs boot action. FSU catches a big break here. Derwin gets caught looking in the backfield and his man leaks to the flat, wide open. Burns gets some decent pressure on the boot but Rosier just misses the throw.
Feagles, Z punt 52 yards to the FS19, downed. 4 1 UM29
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 9 yards, 0:57 used.
MIAMI drive start at 04:20. 1 10 UM25
Rosier, M wide receiver screen right pass complete to Thomas, J for no gain to the UM25 (James, D;Samuels, S), clock 03:51. 1 10 UM25 4-2-5 HB swing to the field where Miami has good leverage to get Meyers blocked in the slot. Derwins gets a quick read on this though and his closing speed is ridiculous as he breaks on this from 11 yards of the ball. He does a nice job of breaking down in the open field while Meyers also shows good fight to work through the block help stop the ball near the line of scrimmage.
Rosier, M deep pass incomplete to Cager, L (Taylor, L), clock 03:34. 2 10 UM25 4-2-5 FSU sends McFadden on a blitz from the closed side of the formation as Miami tries to take advantage of a size mismatch outside vs. Taylor, with a backshoulder or jump ball type of throw. This is really good coverage by Taylor. He stays in phase with the WR off the line and through the route and is smart to keep his eyes on the WR and then play violently through the hands as the WR opens up his shoulders to go for the ball.
Rosier, M middle left pass complete to Berrios, B for 6 yards to the UM31 (Westbrook, A), PENALTY FS offside defense (Kaindoh, J) 5 yards to the UM30, NO PLAY, clock 03:28. 3 10 UM25 Bad mistake by true freshman Kaindoh.
Rosier, M deep pass incomplete to Berrios, B (Westbrook, A), clock 03:05. 3 5 UM30 4-1-6 Cover 1 robber from FSU with the SS (Lane) rolling down underneath to help with in-breaking routes. Miami looks to hit Berrios on a corner route. Really good coverage by FSU. Meyers in press and maintains his outside leverage off the release and then plays the low hip once Berrios breaks on the corner. Westbrook shows good eyes and range here to get over top and help and the ball is incomplete. If you're FSU, this is want you want: play tight man coverage, know where your help is and force Rosier to make accurate throws consistently.
Timeout Miami, clock 03:05. 4 5 UM30
Feagles, Z punt 39 yards to the FS31, fair catch by McFadden, T. 4 5 UM30
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 5 yards, 1:22 used.
MIAMI drive start at 01:24. 1 10 UM20
Walton, M rush left for 5 yards to the UM25 (Westbrook, A), clock 01:09. 1 10 UM20 4-2-5 FSU blitzes McFadden again from the closed side of the formation and Miami runs the pin-n-pull sweep to that side. Wilkerson is the playside end and does a really good job beating the TE and then taking on a puller. Jacob Pugh is the stand up, playside linebacker here and he is very slow to react. He has not had a ton of reps in this role and has to be much quicker to see the pullers and fill his gap.
Walton, M rush over left tackle for 1 yard to the UM26 (Burns, B;James, D), clock 00:26. 2 5 UM25 4-2-5 Miami comes back to the same Zone Read play they ran to start the game. FSU goes cover 1 here and walks Derwin up into the box. Really good job again by Nnadi and Christmas to occupy the OL man and take on double teams. There's no hole for Walton and he cuts back where Derwin is there filling the gap.
Rosier, M rush quarterback draw for 6 yards to the UM32, 1ST DOWN UM (Sweat, J). 3 4 UM26 4-2-5 FSU rushes 6 and loops Burns and Sweat inside. This is a good call vs the QB draw but FSU is unable to finish the play. Thomas gets off a block to make the tackle but Rosier makes him miss and picks up the first.
END OF 1st: Miami 0, FSU 3
Start of 2nd quarter, clock 15:00. 1 10 UM32
Walton, M rush right for no gain to the UM32 (Burns, B), clock 14:40. 1 10 UM32 4-2-5 Another run play and another stop for FSU due to the play of Nnadi and Christmas. The both beat reach blocks on a split zone play, create a wall and there is no hole for Walton to run through. Good hustle from Burns to come around the block of the tackle and get to the ball carrier.
Rosier, M slant pass complete to Richards, A for 14 yards to the UM46, 1ST DOWN UM (Westbrook, A), clock 14:10. 2 10 UM32 4-2-5 FSU in press man to the boundary with true freshman Samuels in coverage. Poor technique here as Samuels gives up too much ground and then opens up his hips to the initial outside stem of the WR. This allows the WR to cross his face with ease and win on the slant.
Walton, M rush over right tackle for 2 yards to the UM48 (Nnadi, D;Christmas, D), clock 13:48. 1 10 UM46 4-2-5 Miami lines up in a 3x1 Trey formation and FSU shows a seven man box with Cover 3 behind it. Zone Read with Miami reading Burns on the weak side. Rosier gives and FSU again wins up front. Outstanding play by Nnadi to beat the reach from the backside guard, find the ball and shed to make the tackle.
Rosier, M middle left pass incomplete to Cager, L, clock 13:25. 2 8 UM48 4-2-5 FSU blitzes Derwin off the edge to the field and plays a trap coverage behind it. Samuels is inside leverage the outside receiver and can sit on any short to intermediate route. This is ends up being a great call as Miami runs a smash concept and Samuels sits on the curl and breaks up the pass.
Rosier, M deep pass incomplete to Richards, A, clock 13:21. 3 8 UM48 4-1-6 FSU crowds the line but drops into Cover 2 with 5 defenders underneath including Derwin in the intermediate middle. Rosier looks to be fooled by this coverage as he locks on to the backside WR and then throws the ball into the dirt as he's trying to hit the WR on a dig.
Feagles, Z punt 40 yards to the FS12, downed (blocked by Burns, B). 4 8 UM48
Drive Summary: 8 Plays, 28 yards, 3:13 used.
MIAMI drive start at 11:14. 1 10 UM21
Rosier, M rush right for loss of 1 yard to the UM20 (Sweat, J), clock 10:58. 1 10 UM21 4-2-5 Split Zone read from Miami and Rosier makes the wrong decision to keep the ball here. Sweat plays the QB with his shoulders square and does a great job closing and finishing.
Rosier, M slant pass incomplete to Richards, A, dropped pass, clock 10:40. 2 11 UM20 4-2-5 Inside Zone/Slant RPO to the single receiver. FSU is running the coverage from earlier in the game where McFadden is in off-man and Pugh is robbing underneath. Pugh takes a bad pass drop and overruns the in-breaking route by Richards. FSU catches a break as the ball is dropped.
Rosier, M sideline pass incomplete to Cager, L, clock 10:36. 3 11 UM20 4-1-6 FSU rushes three and drops eight into Cover 2. Miami is trying to attack the hole to the sideline in Cover 2. There is some space there but the thorw is off and out of bounds.
Feagles, Z punt 47 yards to the FS33, downed. 4 11 UM20
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, -1 yards, 0:49 used.
MIAMI drive start at 08:13. 1 10 UM24
Rosier, M crossing pass complete to Thomas, J for 11 yards to the UM35, 1ST DOWN UM (Becker, C), clock 07:54. 1 10 UM24 4-2-5 FSU in a man-match coverage with Meyers playing off and inside the slot. From my knowledge of coverage, his job is to maintain inside leverage and play the receiver man-to-man, knowing he has help deep and outside. The reciever is able to beat him across his face on a quick slant and Rosier hits him in stride.
Rosier, M crossing pass incomplete to Richards, A (McFadden, T), clock 07:40. 1 10 UM35 4-2-5 Cover 1 with Pugh coming off the edge to the boundary. We have a rare example of an FSU defensive back correctly taking away a quick in-breaking route! McFadden shows great patience at the line of scrimmage, does not overact to the receiver's release and maintains his inside leverage as the receiver pushes into him. As a result, he is able to be physical as the reciever breaks on the slant and he finds himself in position to break up the pass. Would like to see him uses his inside arm to swat the ball while hooking with the outside arm but this a good start to being more disciplined in coverage.
Walton, M rush over right guard for 3 yards to the UM38 (Burns, B), PENALTY UM illegal block (Richards, A) 10 yards to the UM28, clock 07:27. 2 10 UM35 4-2-5 Bit of a cheap shot from Richards coming from the backside and hitting Westbrook in the back.
2nd and 17. 2 17 UM28
Rosier, M rush quarterback scramble for 7 yards to the UM35 (Thomas, M), clock 06:50. 2 17 UM28 4-2-5 Miami runs play action and only sends three players into a route as FSU runs Cover 1. FSU appears to have everyone well covered and Rosier steps up to scramble. Good awareness by Pugh and Thomas to come off their man in coverage and minimize the gain from Rosier.
Rosier, M rush quarterback scramble for no gain to the UM35 (Burns, B), clock 06:14. 3 10 UM35 4-1-6 More Cover 2 from FSU on 3rd down. The twist by the DL upfront gets Kaindoh free off the edge. Rosier steps up to avoid it and Burns makes a nice play to avoid a block and bring down the QB
Feagles, Z punt 48 yards to the FS17, fair catch by McFadden, T. 4 10 UM35
Drive Summary: 5 Plays, 11 yards, 2:19 used.
MIAMI drive start at 01:04. 1 10 UM32
Rosier, M crossing pass incomplete to Berrios, B (Meyers, K), clock 00:58. 1 10 UM32 4-1-6 Cover 2 from FSU. Sweat gets a great jump on the snap, beats the right tackle with his hands and looks like he forces Rosier to throw it a split second earlier than he wanted to.. Meyers playing coverage on the slot with inside leverage and help outside. Berrios is able to get inside him slightly but Meyers makes a good play to recover and leave his feet in full extension to make the pass break up.
Rosier, M deep out pass incomplete to Herndon, C (James, D), clock 00:54. 2 10 UM32 4-1-6 Cover 1 Robber with Derwin manned up on the TE. Excellent coverage by Derwin to maintain leverage on the inside hip as the TE pushes vertical and then drive the low shoulder as the TE breaks on the out. Nearly comes up with the pick.
Rosier, M sideline pass incomplete to Richards, A, PENALTY FS roughing passer (Burns, B) 15 yards to the UM47, 1ST DOWN UM, NO PLAY, clock 00:50. 3 10 UM32 4-1-6 Cover 1 and excellent coverage by McFadden to the single receiver. This is great awareneess of where the first down marker is. He's playing tight press man the whole way and anticipating a short break near the chains. UM bailed out by a questionable roughing penalty.
Rosier, M sacked for loss of 5 yards to the UM42 (Sweat, J;Nnadi, D). 1 10 UM47 4-1-6 More Cover 1 robber from FSU. Rosier is looking to hit the TE to the bounday but Derwin is again in tight coverage. Sweat and Nnadi beat their blocks and are able to get to Rosier before he has time to look for another option.
Timeout Miami, clock 00:43. 2 15 UM42
Rosier, M rush quarterback scramble for 2 yards to the UM44 (Meyers, K), clock 00:30. 2 15 UM42 4-1-6 It looks like FSU is in a 2 man under coverage here and Rosier bails the pocket a little early, before there's time for much to develop. Really nice play by Meyers to come off his man in coverage and bring down Rosier in the open field.
Rosier, M post pass incomplete to Cager, L, clock 00:10. 3 13 UM44 4-1-6 2 man under. Miami runs a switch concept to the field. FSU switches it off but McFadden is way too tight with his cushion here. The reciever runs by him but he gets some help with Lane coming over top. This really should have been caught by the receiver but he appears to short-arm it when seeing Lane coming out of his peripherals.
Feagles, Z punt 34 yards to the FS22, fair catch by McFadden, T. 4 13 UM44
Drive Summary: 5 Plays, 12 yards, 1:01 used.
MIAMI drive start at 15:00. 1 10 UM25
Rosier, M at QB for Miami. 1 10 UM25
Rosier, M deep pass incomplete to Richards, A, PENALTY FS pass interference (McFadden, T) 15 yards to the UM40, 1ST DOWN UM, NO PLAY, clock 14:53. 1 10 UM25 4-2-5 Miami tries to work a double move to the single receiver side vs. press man from McFadden. McFadden is in good position through the double move but loses poise with his back to the ball. He's got to me more patient, trust his eyes and play through the hands as the ball arrives.
Rosier, M sideline pass incomplete to Richards, A (Thomas, M), clock 14:50. 1 10 UM40 4-2-5 Man coverage with FSU blitzing Pugh off the edge to the boundary. Miami again trying to work Richards vs. McFadden. Thomas has man on the back but shows great awareness after the back stays in to pass protect. Thomas reads the eyes of the QB, shuffles to his right and gets his hands up to bat down the pass.
Rosier, M wide receiver screen right pass complete to Berrios, B for 7 yards to the UM47, out-of-bounds (James, D), clock 14:37. 2 10 UM40 4-2-5 Miami quickly gets the ball out to the flats on a bubble by the slot. This play is a bit curious becuase Berrios has FSU badly outleveraged by alignment. Meyers is aligned really far inside and Derwin is about 10 yards off the ball. Berrios is five yards upfield with the ball before anyone can get to him.
Rosier, M slant pass complete to Berrios, B for 6 yards to the FS47, 1ST DOWN UM (Meyers, K), clock 14:16. 3 3 UM47 4-2-5 Slant from Berrios in the slot vs press man coverage from Meyers. Poor technique. Meyers has inside leverage and can't give up the inside but Berrios is able to easily cross his face.
Rosier, M rush over left end for 5 yards to the FS42 (Meyers, K), clock 13:40. 1 10 FS47 4-2-5 Miami aligns in the same 2x2 formation but this time FSU is in Cover 3 with outside leverage over the slots. This appears to be a look Miami was expecting as they run the Zone Read vs a six man box. The way FSU is defending this, Burns should be playing the QB. He squeezes too far inside and Rosier is able to pull the ball and get outside of him.
Rosier, M crossing pass incomplete to Herndon, C (Westbrook, A), clock 13:30. 2 5 FS42 4-2-5 Inside Zone/Slant RPO out of 2x2 from Miami. Good play in coverage by Westbrook. This is the same play from earlier in the game that Marshall gave up. Westbrook does a much better job tightning down on his coverage with the blitz call, maintaining his inside leverage and driving on the receiver's break.
Rosier, M deep pass complete to Berrios, B for 29 yards to the FS13, PENALTY UM pass interference (Berrios, B) 15 yards to the UM43, NO PLAY, clock 13:15. 3 5 FS42 4-1-6 FSU corwds the line, rushes five and plays Cover 1. Miami already showing in this first drive of the second half that they like the matchup of Berrios vs. Meyers in the slot as the go to him again, this time on a slot fade. Meyers plays good coverage as he stays on the inside hip, squeezes the receiver and gets his head turned to find the ball. Good call by the official as Berrios pushes off before the ball arrives.
Rosier, M deep pass complete to Richards, A for 32 yards to the FS25, 1ST DOWN UM, out-of-bounds (Lane, E), clock 12:50. 3 20 UM43 4-1-6 FSU agains crowds the line. What's interesting here is Rosier is patient at the line, waits and lets FSU show their hand before snapping the ball. They drop pre-snap and this let's Rosier know there's no blitz and he has time to go where he wants with the ball. Despite the long yards to go, FSU decides to run Cover 2. McFadden is stuck guarding no one in the flat and Lane blows the coverage by staying on the hash (where there is no threat) instead of getting over top the single receiver to his side. The throw from Rosier is on the money in the cover 2 hole.
Rosier, M rush left for 8 yards to the FS17, out-of-bounds, clock 12:40. 1 10 FS25 4-2-5 Miami runs a 3x1 Trey formation and has a good play called vs. what is starting to be a fairly predictable edge pressure form FSU (they blitz Pugh from the boundary). Miami loops the left tackle and seals Pugh on a Zone Read in which they are reading Sweat as a 4i. Sweat squeezes and Pugh incorrectly dips inside the block of the tackle and Rosier keeps and gets the edge. Nice adjustment by Miami to change the block of the tackle and confuse Pugh.
Walton, M rush right for 2 yards to the FS15, 1ST DOWN UM (Sweat, J), clock 12:14. 2 2 FS17 4-2-5 Miami gets back to the line and runs the same play. FSU has adjusted their front this time to an under front. Walton gets the ball on the give and wants to cut into the backside A gap but Thomas does a nice job filling and forcing him to bounce. Sweat has beat his man on the edge and is able to disengage and make the tackle.
Rosier, M rush quarterback draw for 2 yards to the FS13 (Sweat, J), clock 11:35. 1 10 FS15 4-2-5 Miami flips the formation and runs the same play again. FSU has the same edge pressure called as they did on first down. Pugh plays it correctly this time as he takes on the block of the tackle with his inside shoulder and forces Rosier inside where Sweat is unblocked and there to make the tackle.
Rosier, M crossing pass incomplete to Berrios, B, clock 11:16. 2 8 FS13 4-2-5 Quarters coverage from FSU as Miami play actions and tries to hit Berrios on a post from the slot. Arthur Williams gets a nice bull rush here and drives his man into Rosier as he is releasing the ball. Derwin in coverage and gives up a little too much inside as Berrios crosses his face but the throw is too far out in front.
Rosier, M crossing pass incomplete to Richards, A (McFadden, T), clock 11:12. 3 8 FS13 4-1-6 FSU doing all they can to try and pressure Rosier as they rush six this time. McFadden is playing an off catch-man technique at the 5 yard line where he plays with no cushion and squats on the receiver's inside hip. Good patience and discipline here by McFadden to keep his leverage, use his hands on the receiver at his break and remain in phase to get the PBU. The ball is behind and he nearly comes up with the pick.
(Lane, E). 4 8 FS13
Badgley, M field goal attempt from 31 GOOD, clock 11:08. 4 8 FS13
Miami 3, FSU 3
Drive Summary: 12 Plays, 62 yards, 3:52 used. Miami had a good plan to attack FSU coming out of the half. Good job by the defense to absorb the initial blow and hold them to a FG once they got in the RZ.
MIAMI drive start at 11:00. 1 10 FS47
Walton, M rush over left guard for 4 yards to the FS43 (Pugh, J), clock 10:42. 1 10 FS47 4-2-5 Miami goes 3x1 and runs Zone Read . FSU blitzes Pugh to the read side. The call by FSU has the DL slanting inside to fill all interior gaps and force a cutback if the QB gives. Pugh slow plays the read, forcing Rosier to give and then Pugh crashes down on Walton as he cuts back.
Rosier, M sacked for loss of 4 yards to the FS47 (Jackson, D), clock 09:48. 2 6 FS43 4-2-5 Drop back pass from Miami and Christmas is in the face of Rosier immediately as he beat the RG on an inside move. Excellent pursuit by Nnadi and Thomas to force Rosier out of bounds on the scramble
Rosier, M post pass complete to Richards, A for 15 yards to the FS32, 1ST DOWN UM (Westbrook, A), clock 09:35. 3 10 FS47 4-1-6 Jimbo said they were double covering Richards on this play. If that is the case, this appears to need to be handled by McFadden and Lane. Both are playing loose with big of cushions and Richards is wide open on a dig route. I have not seen FSU run this coverage very often and from the looks of this play you wonder how much they have repped it in practice.
Walton, M rush over left end for no gain to the FS32 (Lane, E), clock 09:02. 1 10 FS32 4-2-5 Zone Read from 2x2. Excellent run defense by FSU and it starts with Nnadi. He man-handles the LG and Walton can't get around him. He has to hesitiate and this allows time for Wilkerson and Lane to get to the ball on the backside and corral the ball.
Rosier, M deep pass intercepted by Samuels, S at the FS0, Samuels, S return 0 yards to the FS0, touchback. 2 10 FS32 4-2-5 Miami goes play action with double posts to the field vs. quarters coverage from FSU. Samuels is playing an off, shuffle technique so he's already half-turned to run with the deep route. Does a great job staying on top of the route and then looking back to find the ball before going up to get it. Bad throw by Rosier but good job by FSU to capitalize on it.
Drive Summary: 5 Plays, 15 yards, 2:22 used.
MIAMI drive start at 07:02. 1 10 FS21
Rosier, M deep pass complete to Berrios, B for 21 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN UM, TOUCHDOWN, clock 06:57. 1 10 FS21 4-2-5 FSU sends five to rush but gets no pressure as Rosier takes 3 steps and a hitch and gets the ball out. It's a double move by Berrios in the slot to the boundary vs. off-man coverage from Westbrook. The double move freezes Westbrook just enough to get Berrios some space and Rosier delivers a really nice ball on the back shoulder of the receiver. FSU has run a ton of man coverage all game and it's a good job by Miami to formation a mis-match and call up a good play vs. man.
Badgley, M kick attempt good.
Miami 10, FSU 3
Drive Summary: 1 Plays, 21 yards, 0:05 used.
MIAMI drive start at 03:32. 1 10 UM17
Rosier, M deep out pass incomplete to Richards, A (James, D), clock 03:26. 1 10 UM17 4-2-5 Play action from Miami and they try to hit the #3 receiver on a corner route vs. Derwin James. He gets a great read and jump on the route and probably intercepts this but the Miami receiver does a great job continuing to work back to the ball and it's just enough to keep Derwin from coming down with it.
Rosier, M rush right for 11 yards to the UM28, 1ST DOWN UM (Kaindoh, J;Williams, A), clock 03:09. 2 10 UM17 4-2-5 Miami runs Zone Read to the nub of the formation. McFadden has edge run support responsibility and is aligned way too far off the ball. Rosier keeps and gets the edge before McFadden finally gets there to force the ball back inside. Excellent hustle by Arthur Williams here who looks like a guy trying to earn playing time.
Rosier, M wide receiver screen left pass complete to Richards, A for 7 yards to the UM35, out-of-bounds (James, D), clock 02:47. 1 10 UM28 4-2-5 Bubble screen to the trip side from Miami. Meyers triggers aggressively to the ball but is out of control. Berrios gets an easy cut block on him and Miami has room to the outside.
Walton, M rush right for loss of 2 yards to the UM33, out-of-bounds (Thomas, M), clock 01:58. 2 3 UM35 4-2-5 Zone Read to the field. This a a loaf by Burns. He has contain to the field but appears to let up in the middle of the play and Walton gets outside of him. Luckily for FSU Meyers is working hard on the outside vs. the block of the receiver and Thomas is running inside out to force Walton out of bounds.
Rosier, M middle left pass complete to Berrios, B for 7 yards to the UM40, 1ST DOWN UM (Meyers, K), clock 01:27. 3 5 UM33 4-1-6 Berrios vs. Meyers in the slot. Meyers in press man and Berrios runs a stop route at the sticks. Despite his short stature, he has a strength advantage on Meyers and gets away with a push at the top of the route to gain seperation and room for Rosier to deliver the ball.
Rosier, M sacked for loss of 3 yards to the UM37 (TEAM), clock 00:31. 1 10 UM40 4-2-5 FSU in quarters vs a 2x2 from Miami. They apear to have everyone covered uo downfield as Rosier is forced to leave the pocket. The zone coverage allows the FSU underneath defenders to eye thr quarterback and close in on him quickly as he tries to scramble.
Rosier, M middle right pass complete to Cager, L for 7 yards to the UM44 (Westbrook, A), clock 00:06. 2 13 UM37 4-2-5 FSU runs the corner blitz from the boundary vs an RPO by Miami. The blitz makes it an auto pull and throw read for Miami as Rosier gets the ball to the receiver on the slant before Westbrook can roll down and play it.
END OF 3RD: Miami 10, FSU 3
Start of 4th quarter, clock 15:00. 3 6 UM44
Rosier, M middle left pass incomplete to Mullins, D, clock 14:56. 3 6 UM44 4-1-6 FSU rushes four and plays a 2 man under coverage. Excellent coverage by Taylor as he shows great awarness of the chains and where his help is. Sits on the inside hip of the receiver and takes away the dig before breaking up the pass.
Feagles, Z punt 33 yards to the FS23, downed. 4 6 UM44
Drive Summary: 8 Plays, 27 yards, 3:45 used.
MIAMI drive start at 12:13. 1 10 UM09
Homer, T rush left for 5 yards to the UM14, out-of-bounds, clock 12:07. 1 10 UM09 4-2-5 Miami runs counter to the boundary for the first time all game. Sweat does a good job squeezing the downblock of the tackle and taking on the first puller. Thomas does not do his job here to scrape and set the edge and the RB is able to get outside.
Rosier, M deep pass incomplete to Richards, A, clock 11:35. 2 5 UM14 4-2-5 FSU has the corner blitz called but Miami checks the play and FSU wisely calls off the blitz. Miami looks to hit the receiver in the hole where the corner would have vacated but McFadden is able to take it away and Rosier just throws the balll away.
Rosier, M sideline pass incomplete to Richards, A, clock 11:31. 3 5 UM14 4-1-6 FSU crowds the line, rushes five with a stunt and plays Cover 1 behind it. Good press man coverage by McFadden vs. a curl route at the sticks by the single receiver. McFadden does a really good job staying on the receiver's hip and tightening down as they receiver and gets into his break near the first down marker.
Feagles, Z punt 47 yards to the FS39, McFadden, T return -4 yards to the FS35 (Johnson, D). 4 5 UM14
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 5 yards, 0:56 used.
MIAMI drive start at 06:55. 1 10 UM25
Rosier, M crossing pass complete to Berrios, B for 15 yards to the UM40, 1ST DOWN UM (Meyers, K), clock 06:46. 1 10 UM25 4-2-5 FSU in their match Cover 3 defense as Miami play actions and rolls Rosier left before hitting Berrios on an intermediate crossing pattern. Depsite being over the slot, this is not on Meyers. Both Derwin and Thomas are out of position on this play. Derwin does not roll to the middle of the field and as a result, is not in a good poisiton to help on the cross. Also, Thomas does not get any depth in his drop to get underneath the route.
Rosier, M sideline pass complete to Herndon, C for 37 yards to the FS23, 1ST DOWN UM (Becker, C), clock 06:03. 1 10 UM40 4-2-5 FSU tips their hand pre-snap and shows the corner blitz. Miami sees it, checks the play and FSU stays in the blitz. Pugh should be playing man on the TE here but comes off him and leaves him wide open. Another big mistake by the defense in the most crucial part of the game.
Rosier, M sideline pass complete to Herndon, C for 9 yards to the FS14 (Westbrook, A), clock 05:53. 1 10 FS23 4-2-5 Miami goes quick to the line and throws a bubble to the slot to the boundary. McFadden inexplicably goes inside the block of the receiver and gives up the outside.
Walton, M rush right for 7 yards to the FS7, 1ST DOWN UM (Pugh, J), clock 05:35. 2 1 FS14 4-2-5 Zone Read from Miami as they read Sweat who is in a 4i. Pugh and Sweat do not appear to be communicating well pre-snap. Pugh is trying to call Thomas to a different spot but Thomas looks it off. After the ball is snapped, Pugh is late to react and fill his gap and there's a hole for Walton to pick up a sizable gain.
Rosier, M rush quarterback scramble for 1 yard to the FS6 (Christmas, D), clock 05:14. 1 0 FS07 3-4 Quarters coverage from FSU as Miami drops back but appears to have no where to throw. Edge pressure from Burns forces Rosier to step up. Excellent pursuit by Christmas to keep him in bounds.
Timeout Miami, clock 05:14. 2 0 FS06
Rosier, M middle right pass complete to Berrios, B for 6 yards to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 05:09. 2 0 FS06 4-2-5 Man coverage with Meyers press up with inside leverage over Berrios in the slot. Jimbo mentioned that Meyers should have been in outside leverage here because he had help inside. Good throw and catch from Miami but it's another bust from FSU in a crucial moment.
Badgley, M kick attempt good. 1 0 FS03
Miami 17, FSU 13
Drive Summary: 6 Plays, 75 yards, 1:46 used.
MIAMI drive start at 01:24. 1 10 UM25
Rosier, M sideline pass incomplete to Homer, T (Sweat, J), clock 01:19. 1 10 UM25 4-1-6 Cover 1 Robber. FSU appears to have everyone covered down field. Rosier steps back and away from the pocket instead of stepping up and has nowhere to go but to throw it away.
Rosier, M deep out pass incomplete to Berrios, B, clock 01:13. 2 10 UM25 4-1-6 2 man under. Really good coverage from Meyers here vs Berrios on a deep out. Plays the low hip and drives the low shoulder after the break, gets himself in position to collision the receiver and pushes him out of bounds before he can get his feet down.
Rosier, M crossing pass complete to Berrios, B for 17 yards to the UM42, 1ST DOWN UM, clock 01:07. 3 10 UM25 4-1-6 Miami in a trips bunch to their right with FSU playing man coverage. Meyers is pressing the point and Derwin is pressing the inside receiver. Meyers and Derwin are aligned at the same level so once the ball is snapped, Derwin is in the way for Meyers to be able to play his man tight on the crossing pattern. Inexcusable for them to be aligned this way. Berrios easily gets space and Rosier steps up and delviers for the first on another crucial down.
Homer, T rush right for 10 yards to the FS48, 1ST DOWN UM (Meyers, K). 1 10 UM42 4-1-6 Good call by Miami to run the ball with the FSU DL in pass rush mode and the FSU DC clearly expecting pass.. FSU is two gapping Thomas in the box and is he outleveraged by alignments to be able to fill the B gap that Walton runs through.
Homer, T rush left for 14 yards to the FS34, 1ST DOWN UM (Andrews, N), clock 00:33. 1 10 FS48 4-1-6 FSU calls a blitz to the boundary and leaves themselves outnumbered to the field. B gap is wide open as Miami hands to the RB and he hits it for another big gain.
Rosier, M deep pass incomplete to Cager, L, clock 00:23. 1 10 FS34 4-1-6 Miami throws the fade to the single receiver with MCFadden in press man. Really good coverage by McFadden here as he is all over it.
Rosier, M deep pass incomplete to Cager, L, clock 00:19. 2 10 FS34 4-1-6 Miami tries the same play and McFadden is again in good position. Nice job using his hands this time and being physical with the receiver.
Timeout Miami, clock 00:19. 3 10 FS34
Rosier, M crossing pass complete to Berrios, B for 11 yards to the FS23, 1ST DOWN UM, out-of-bounds, clock 00:11. 3 10 FS34 4-1-6 Miami goes back to a matchup they feel confident in with Berrios vs. Meyers in the slot. Really nice route by Berrios to get into the body of Meyers and then use a push off to create space. Meyers recovers after the ball is caught but can't make the tackle in the open field and allows Berrios to get out of bounds.
Rosier, M deep pass complete to Langham, D for 23 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN UM, TOUCHDOWN, clock 00:06. 1 10 FS23 4-1-6 Miami goes back to the 1-on-1 matchup vs. McFadden to the single receiver side. There are my defensive calls to question in this game but this is not one of them, in my opinion. This is a coverage that stops Miami from gaining yards for the FG and trusts your top corner to lock down the deep ball. The latter does not happen as McFadden gets sloppy with his technique, looks back for the ball too early and as a result is not able to lean into the receiver and take away his back shoulder. Also, great throw and catch from Miami.
Badgley, M kick attempt good. 1 0 FS03
PENALTY UM unsportsmanlike conduct 15 yards to the UM20. 1 0 UM35
