Welcome back to our weekly film review sessions of Florida State’s 2017 season. Every play broken down, with video and analysis.

Against Wake Forest, Florida State had one of its worst offensive performances in some time.
With a true freshman at the helm, the ’Noles struggled to move the ball down the field. Wake Forest’s defensive line dominated FSU’s offensive line, setting a new program record with 17 tackles for loss in this game. Of those, five were sacks.
Jacques Patrick and Cam Akers broke off some big runs, but they were countered by the many times Wake Forest was able to bring them down either behind the line of scrimmage or after a short gain. The Demon Deacons were largely able to control the line of scrimmage in this matchup.
The passing game struggled without the presence of Auden Tate. Blackman was only four of 11 on passes thrown beyond the line of scrimmage and 68% of his passing yards came on two throws to Tate (40-yard touchdown) and Keith Gavin (43-yard pass).
Remove those two throws from the equation, and FSU’s entire receiving corps finished with four catches for 10 yards. Not the performance you would expect from a unit comprised of Florida State-caliber athletes.
The tight ends were also absent from the passing game, with Mavin Saunders being the only one to receive a target in this game. It was an incompletion.
Designed screens were the only way to get a passing game going for a brief period. Blackman was seven of nine on passes behind the line of scrimmage, which was over a third of his total throws.
A home underdog to Miami, the ’Noles will need to scrape together a better offensive performance to clinch the second win of the season this weekend.

Weaver, M kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, James, D return 36 yards to the FS36, PENALTY FS illegal block (Jones, F) 10 yards to the FS26, 1st and 10, FS ball on FS26.
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs26 | 12 gun | Patrick, J rush up middle for no gain to the FS26 (Ejiofor, D). | Mavin Saunders misses block on the zone play. |
Fs | 2-10 | at Fs26 | 21 twins | Patrick, J rush up middle for 4 yards to the FS30 (Dunn, W). | Inside zone, well blocked. Patrick gets nothing extra. |
Fs | 3-6 | at Fs30 | 11 gun | Blackman, J sideline pass complete to Murray, N for 4 yards to the FS34. | Pass protection OK, James Blackman has time here as FSU tries to high/low the corner with a Cover-2 beater. WR Noonie Murray isn't deep enough on his speed out for a first down anyway, but if Blackman holds it a bit longer, he might have a huge touchdown play to the other receiver. Wake Forest has this played really well. Jimbo Fisher talks with James Blackman about this after. Jimbo also said that Murray ran this route too short. |
Fs | 4-2 | at Fs34 | Tyler, L punt 44 yards to the WF22, Dortch, G return 9 yards to the WF31 (Thomas, M).

Fs | 1-10 | at Fs01 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 09:41.
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs01 | 22 I | Patrick, J rush up middle for 69 yards to the WF30, 1ST DOWN FS (Bates, J). | Perfect blocking up front on inside zone, Patrick isn't fast enough to score. |
Fs | 1-10 | at Wf30 | 22 I | Patrick, J rush left for 1 yard to the WF29 (Bates, J). | Line makes its blocks, WR Auden Tate takes poor angle and the safety he has to block makes the play. |
Fs | 2-9 | at Wf29 | 10 gun | Blackman, J sacked for loss of 10 yards to the WF39 (Dunn, W), fumble by Blackman, J recovered by FS Ruble, B at WF39, Ruble, B for 6 yards to the WF33 (Dawson, G). | Brock Ruble pushes his man 9 yards past the LOS, and his man makes the sack. But this isn't horrible blocking by him. Blackman is taking a while to read the smash route, and double pumps and does not step up in the pocket, but the interior of the offensive line is not giving him enough space to step up as they are getting pushed back too far. Pass pro doesn't have to be passive. |
Fs | 3-13 | at Wf33 | 20 gun | Patrick, J rush draw play for loss of 1 yard to the WF34 (Ejiofor, D;Rodney, Z). | This sweep is a give-up play, but Brock Ruble/Landon Dickerson have the defensive end split them untouched on a mental error. Still would not have resulted in a first down, but disappointing. |
Fs | 4-14 | at Wf34 | Aguayo, R field goal attempt from 51 GOOD, clock 07:06.

Fs | 1-10 | at Fs29 | 11 gun | Rasul, A rush up middle for loss of 4 yards to the FS25 (Ejiofor, D). | Second-consecutive missed assignment by LT Ruble, who appears to again think he has help coming from the inside and the defensive end shoots the gap between he and LG Dickerson. The other blocks were good. Wake Forest is not respective any run threat from Blackman on the backside. They are seen arguing after the play. |
Fs | 2-14 | at Fs25 | 10 gun | Blackman, J bubble screen pass complete to Campbell, G for 1 yard to the FS26, fumble forced by Dawson, G, fumble by Campbell, G recovered by WF Williams, Jab at FS26. | George Campbell should hold on to the ball, but this play is likely on a freshman QB. FSU's numbers and angles for this screen are not great, and checking into something else is something a more veteran QB would do. |
Drive: 2 plays, minus 3 yards, TOP 00:49
Weaver, M kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, touchback.
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs25 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 02:48.
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs25 | 11 trips | Patrick, J rush right for 10 yards to the FS35, 1ST DOWN FS (Glenn, C;Bates, J). | I don't like how far they ended up in the backfield, and to the untrained eye it looks like center Alec Eberle and RT Josh Ball missed their blocks, but on this stretch play, their job is to build a wall and get their guy's turned, and they do that. But the design of this play is asking Alec Eberle to make a really tough reach block given the angle of the DT, and having the RG Minshew help him with a double team initially could help a lot. It might be Eberle's responsibility to make a call for a double here, and later in the broadcast, Jimbo Fisher is seen screaming at Eberle, who likely missed several checks/calls. But still, the play worked as designed. |
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs35 | 11 gun | Blackman, J bubble screen pass complete to Murray, N for loss of 2 yards to the FS33 (Henderson, A). | IZ/Bubble series (pre-snap decision), Blackman makes the right call to throw the bubble screen, blocking is good, except for the block of George Campbell, whose man blows up Murray. |
Fs | 2-12 | at Fs33 | 11 trips | Akers, C rush right for 5 yards to the FS38 (Dawson, G). | Inside zone, offensive line blocks it well, Akers makes hit cut to the outside too late and trips over the receiver, who is also blocking well. Akers either needs to cut earlier so he does not trip, or just stick it up and take six yards. |
Fs | 3-7 | at Fs38 | 11 gun | Blackman, J screen pass complete to Patrick, J for 1 yard to the FS39 (Bates, J), PENALTY FS illegal block (Eberle, A) 15 yards to the FS24. | Well-timed screen for Florida State. Eberle is not attempting to make an illegal low block here, he just saw the defender out of the side of his facemask, turns to block him (you can see him load up), and his feet give out from under him as he turns. But at full speed, it looks like a cut, so it's the right call by the ref. |
Fs | 3-21 | at Fs24 | 20 gun | Patrick, J rush draw play for loss of 1 yard to the FS23 (Kemp, D;Rodney, Z). | Give-up play called by Jimbo Fisher, but fullback Jonathan Vickers does not get his man cut. |

Florida State 3, Wake Forest 3
Fs | 4-22 | at Fs23 | Start of 2nd quarter, clock 15:00.
Fs | 4-22 | at Fs23 | Tyler, L punt 10 yards to the FS33, out-of-bounds, PENALTY FS illegal formation 5 yards to the FS28, 1st and 10, WF ball on FS28.
Drive: 5 plays, minus 2 yards, TOP 02:56
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs25 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 13:17.
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs25 | 21 twins | Blackman, J sideline pass incomplete to Murray, N (Bates, J). | PA, perfect pass protection, great throw, maybe a tad late(?), but the Wake Forest defender makes a leaping tip. Good defensive play. The decision to throw this shows a lot of confidence from Blackman in his own arm, but on replay, Murray was never that open. |
Fs | 2-10 | at Fs25 | 11 gun | Akers, C rush draw play for loss of 3 yards to the FS22 (Dunn, W). | Power from gun, two missed blocks on the play: Minshew on the pull, and Izzo on the end. This was tough because Wake was in a run blitz, and sometimes the defense just has the right call for the offense. |
Fs | 3-13 | at Fs22 | 11 pistol | Patrick, J rush draw play for 3 yards to the FS25 (Henderson, A). | Good blocking from the offensive line, OK by TE Ryan Izzo, excellent by WR Keith Gavin, but Jacques Patrick has one guy to beat and can't do it. This is on the running back. He cannot let the cornerback tackle him in space. |
Fs | 4-10 | at Fs25 | PENALTY WF roughing the kicker (Washington, S) 15 yards to the FS40, 1ST DOWN FS.
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs40 | 21 twins | Akers, C rush up middle for loss of 2 yards to the FS38 (Dunn, W;Dawson, G). | Wake Forest has the box loaded up, so this play was likely doomed from the start, but 1) Wake's defensive end does not buy the fake at all and crashes down on the backside (remember this for later) and 2) Rick Leonard does not get a good block on the linebacker, so the front side is skinny and the backside is not an option. |
Fs | 2-12 | at Fs38 | 10 gun | Blackman, J sacked for loss of 9 yards to the FS29 (Yarbary, W). | This is 100% on the offensive line. RT Rick Leonard and RG Cole Minshew are beaten on a simple twist. Poor teamwork. |
Fs | 3-21 | at Fs29 | 11 gun | Akers, C rush draw play for 4 yards to the FS33 (Calhoun, C). | This is a give-up power play and Wake knows it is coming. Akers needs to hit the hole quicker here. |
Fs | 4-17 | at Fs33 | Tyler, L punt 57 yards to the WF10, Dortch, G return 9 yards to the WF19 (Nasirildeen, H).
Drive: 6 plays, 8 yards, TOP 04:02
Fs | 1-10 | at Wf16 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 06:59.
Fs | 1-10 | at Wf16 | 22 | Blackman, J slant pass incomplete to Tate, A, QB hurry by Rodney, Z. | Play-action, blocking is OK (late pressure on blitz), throw is high, which doesn't work for Tate who was having trouble raising his arms above his head this week (shoulder). |
Fs | 2-10 | at Wf16 | 22 | Patrick, J rush draw play for 8 yards to the WF8 (Bates, J;Glenn, C). | Inside zone, perfect blocking, Patrick gets what is blocked and no more. |
Fs | 3-2 | at Wf08 | 22 wing over | Patrick, J rush up middle for 5 yards to the WF3, 1ST DOWN FS (Bates, J;Bassey, E), PENALTY WF personal foul (Bates, J) 2 yards to the WF1. | Interesting formation here, with both tight ends, wr, and even the fullback to the boundary. This screams run or bootleg, and Wake might have been expecting it. Wrong. Play is inside zone. Again, perfect, physical blocking from the offensive line, Patrick gets what is blocked and no more. Good job not fumbling. |
Fs | 1-G | at Wf01 | 32 | Patrick, J rush up middle for 1 yard to the WF0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 05:41. | This is just 9 people trying to mash into and block 11, old fashioned tight splits, straight ahead goal line. Offensive line doesn't allow much penetration, good job by Patrick to find crease and power through to end zone. |
Aguayo, R kick attempt good.

Drive: 4 plays, 16 yards, TOP 01:18
Fs | 1-10 | at Wf30 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 05:09.
Fs | 1-10 | at Wf30 | 21 gun | Akers, C rush draw play for 15 yards to the WF15, 1ST DOWN FS (Dawson, G;Bassey, E). | Wake Forest slanting towards the IZ play, well blocked by the line, Vickers with a good block, too, and Akers correctly cuts it to the backside. |
Fs | 1-10 | at Wf15 | 21 gun | Akers, C rush draw play for 7 yards to the WF8 (Bates, J). | Looks like FSU ran the same play, with strength flipped. Wake again aggressively plays it front side, blocking not as good on this one from tight end Ryan Izzo, Akers cuts it backside, slips, but has the leg strength to beat a defender. |
Fs | 2-3 | at Wf08 | 21 | Akers, C rush draw play for loss of 5 yards to the WF13 (Ejiofor, D), PENALTY FS holding declined. | WR George Campbell isn't sure who to block on this play, and I think this causes some indecisiveness on the part of Akers. Didn't love the blocks from the tackles on this play, either, and Ruble is called for a hold. |
Fs | 3-8 | at Wf13 | Timeout Florida State, clock 03:39.
Fs | 3-8 | at Wf13 | 21 gun | Blackman, J sideline pass complete to Akers, C for 3 yards to the WF10 (Henderson, A). | This looks to be on the freshman QB. Good blocking by the offensive line, FSU has an out/post concept to the field and George Campbell does come open. But, it's a safe throws before the half and is not the worst call in the world. |
Fs | 4-5 | at Wf10 | Aguayo, R field goal attempt from 27 GOOD, clock 02:55.

Fs | 1-10 | at Fs20 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 12:40.
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs20 | 21 | Patrick, J rush up middle for 23 yards to the FS43, 1ST DOWN FS (Bates, J). | George Campbell doesn't know where to line up, and FSU barely gets the snap off. Stretch play, excellent blocks by the offensive line (Especially Ruble/Dickerson) and Jonathan Vickers. Wake's run blitz backfires. Patrick does a good job to get the final 10 yards of this. |
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs43 | 21 twins | Patrick, J rush up middle for 2 yards to the FS45 (Yarbary, W;Ejiofor, D). | Same play, Cole Minshew gets beat and Patrick does not attack the hole with the same ferocity as the previous play, but gets two. Other blocks were good. |
Dickerson (FSU) injured on the play
Fs | 2-8 | at Fs45 | 21 twins | Blackman, J sideline pass incomplete to Murray, N (Bassey, E). | Play-action off inside zone FSU ran previous two plays. Offensive line blocks it great, tight end Ryan Izzo gets beat, which makes Blackman have to reset (OL blocking well, he has room to step up), and fires a beauty of a pass to Murray, but because it's late, the DB has a bit more time to catch up. |
Fs | 3-8 | at Fs45 | 11 gun | Blackman, J screen pass complete to Patrick, J for 15 yards to the WF40, 1ST DOWN FS (Henderson, A;Bates, J). | Beautiful screen, well sold by the offensive line and by Blackman |
Fs | 1-10 | at Wf40 | 21 twins | Blackman, J sacked for loss of 3 yards to the WF43 (Yarbary, W). | Dammit. Freshman QB James Blackman sees something here and is about to flip the ball out to uncovered Keith Gavin (who looks to be running the wrong route?), despite this being a run play. The whole line blocks stretch, except for the right guard, Cole Minshew, who takes what looks to be a pass set, or a step in the completely wrong direction, indicating that he does not know the play. Directly after the play, Minshew is waving his arms and yelling at Center Alec Eberle, like Eberle was supposed to make a call and did not. So screwups by a receiver and an offensive lineman. |
Fs | 2-13 | at Wf43 | 11 pistol | Akers, C rush left for 27 yards to the WF16, 1ST DOWN FS (Glenn, C). | This is the counter FSU always ran with Dalvin Cook. Well blocked by the offensive line, Akers' job is to make one man miss and he does that. Nice play. |
Fs | 1-10 | at Wf16 | 11 pistol | Akers, C rush left for 1 yard to the WF15 (Bates, J;Henderson, A). | Same counter play, Wake plays it much better, Brock Ruble gets pushed back too far. Ryan Izzo can't get to his block because of it. Noonie Murray good block. |
Fs | 2-9 | at Wf15 | 21 gun | Blackman, J crossing pass incomplete to Gavin, K (Bates, J). | Play fake after the two gun runs, Eberle gives up some pressure. Ultimately, this is Wake fooling a young QB by showing split-safety covevrage before the snap and rolling into Cover-3. You can't see it on the broadcast, but our man in the stands said George Campbell was wide open on the backside. Just a misread by Blackman. |
Fs | 3-9 | at Wf15 | 10 gun | Blackman, J screen pass complete to Patrick, J for 10 yards to the WF5, 1ST DOWN FS (Henderson, A). | Wake plays soft zone, rushes 4 aggressively, perfect recipe for a screen, which is what FSU runs. Good throw by Blackman, excellent blocking by FSU, especially Brock Ruble. |
Fs | 1-G | at Wf05 | 22 wing | Patrick, J rush left for 1 yard to the WF4 (Glenn, C). | Inside zone, Jacques Patrick needs to hit this play up inside harder. It's smashmouth, short yardage, no need to consider bouncing this, he has a double team to follow. |
Fs | 2-G | at Wf04 | 22 wing | Patrick, J rush up middle for no gain to the WF4 (Dunn, W). | Same play. Tight end Mavin Saunders gets whipped. |
Fs | 3-G | at Wf04 | 11 gun | Blackman, J rush quarterback draw for 4 yards to the WF0, clock 07:00, PENALTY FS holding (Ball, J) 10 yards to the WF14, NO PLAY. | Great play call, a lot of good blocks, and the left guard or tackle? doesn't handle the defensive lineman on his side and gets a holding call. |
PENALTY WF personal foul (Kemp, D) 7 yards to the WF7, 1ST DOWN FS.
Fs | 1-G | at Wf07 | 21 gun | Akers, C rush up middle for no gain to the WF7 (Ejiofor, D). | Cam Akers might have hit the wrong hole, but tight end Ryan Izzo definitely doesn't make his block. |
Fs | 2-G | at Wf07 | 11 gun | Blackman, J screen pass complete to Akers, C for loss of 1 yard to the WF8 (Bates, J). | Swing screen, Wake Forest is all over it immediately. Just the right defensive call. |
Fs | 3-G | at Wf08 | PENALTY FS delay of game 5 yards to the WF13. | Constantly snapping the ball at 02, 01, or 00 will eventually get you in trouble. FSU's offense is so painfully slow.
Fs | 3-G | at Wf13 | 11 gun | Patrick, J rush draw play for loss of 7 yards to the WF20 (Dawson, G;Rodney, Z). | This is a give-up play call, and it is hard to blame Jimbo Fisher for it as his QB is struggling with decision making.. Stretch. Left tackle Josh Ball gets beat inside. Rick Leonard is asked to make an extremely difficult block on the back side at a tough angle. |
Fs | 4-G | at Wf20 | Aguayo, R field goal attempt from 37 GOOD, clock 04:18.

Fs | 1-10 | at Fs29 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 02:14, FS ball on FS29.
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs29 | 22 | Rasul, A rush right for 1 yard to the FS30 (Dawson, G). | This counter play isn't bad blocking, it's just strung out well by Wake Forest and their linebacker makes a great play. A more veteran QB might audible out of this as the numbers were unfavorable from the start. Additionally, because its QB had been so poor so far, Wake Forest was playing FSU to run all the time, and FSU was predictable in its runs from certain formations. |
Fs | 2-9 | at Fs30 | 10 gun | Blackman, J sideline pass incomplete to Gavin, K. | Good pass protection, bad throw by Blackman. Receiver has no chance to catch this. True freshman QB is melting down a bit at this point and has 31 yards on 13 throws, almost all on screens. |
Fs | 3-9 | at Fs30 | 21 twins | Blackman, J sacked for loss of 10 yards to the FS20 (Dawson, G). | FSU is trying to set up a screen, Wake Forest sniffs it out, Blackman has all day to scramble, but thinks he is outside the pocket apparently (is not) and throws it away, resulting in the intentional grounding sack. He's rattled. It's a learning experience on the job. |
Fs | 4-19 | at Fs20 | Tyler, L punt 45 yards to the WF35, Dortch, G return 1 yards to the WF36, PENALTY WF holding (Davis, C) 10 yards to the WF26, 1st and 10, PENALTY FS personal foul (Nasirildeen, H) 15 yards to the WF41, 1st and 10, WF ball on WF41.

Fs | 1-10 | at Fs37 | 11 pistol | Blackman, J deep pass incomplete to Campbell, G (Henderson, A), QB hurry by Dunn, W. | Good play-fake, good pass protection, George Campbell just drops this throw. Blackman throws a pretty deep ball. This was a 45-yard drop. |
Fs | 2-10 | at Fs37 | 11 gun | Blackman, J sacked for loss of 7 yards to the FS30 (Ejiofor, D), fumble by Blackman, J recovered by FS Minshew, C at FS30. | Josh Ball is beaten to the inside in pass protection, this sack is on the offensive line. |
Fs | 3-17 | at Fs30 | 11 gun | Blackman, J deep pass incomplete to Campbell, G (Henderson, A), QB hurry by Dunn, W. | James Blackman is pressured because Josh Ball, who has help from Ryan Izzo in pass protection, fails to play the block inside-out enough. The broadcast talks about the receiver not doing enough to come back and help Blackman, which is probably fair. |
Fs | 4-17 | at Fs30 | Tyler, L punt 51 yards to the WF19, Dortch, G return 29 yards to the WF48, out-of-bounds (Tyler, L).

Fs | 1-10 | at Fs35 | 11 pistol | Blackman, J sideline pass complete to Tate, A for 7 yards to the FS42 (Henderson, A;Kemp, D). | Pass protection is good, James Blackman quickly goes through his reads and hits his Auden Tate in stride. |
Fs | 2-3 | at Fs42 | 22 | Akers, C rush right for 5 yards to the FS47, 1ST DOWN FS (Bates, J). | Stretch, Akers hits the right hole, good blocking by the offensive line, and this is an Auden Tate block (he's injured, has an excuse) from being a huge run. |
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs47 | 22 | Akers, C rush left for loss of 10 yards to the FS37 (Bates, J;Dunn, W). | Wake Forest takes a calculated gamble, I think, or it could have just gotten really lucky on a screwup by its defensive end. FSU runs the same stretch play it just ran, but to the other side. The Deacs' defensive end slant hard inside, as their defensive tackle occupies the guard, exploiting the B-gap. This is potentially opening up the Deacs to get horrendously gashed to the outside, but perhaps it is a chance Wake Forest will take, as to this point FSU has 38 yards passing on 14 attempts, so its linebackers and safeties can play the run without thinking much about the pass. FSU needs to figure out if this was some freelancing, or something Wake Forest noticed on film and tried to exploit. In any case, the defensive end comes free. I guess the left tackle should chip him and climb, as in theory the is taking himself out of the play. But the end does make the play, and the left tackle gets sucked too far inside. Auden Tate also bizarrely misses his block after having the defender squared up. Back-to-back block misses by Auden Tate probably indicate his health level, as he is typically dependable. Akers loses four extra yards by retreating. |
Fs | 2-20 | at Fs37 | 11 gun | Blackman, J screen pass incomplete to Akers, C, QB hurry by Dunn, W. | Wake knows this screen is coming, so it wouldn't have worked anyway, but Blackman sails it high. Too much pressure on the left side, but you can only run so many screens before the defense knows what is coming. |
Fs | 3-20 | at Fs37 | 11 gun | Blackman, J sideline pass complete to Gavin, K for 43 yards to the WF20, 1ST DOWN FS (Taylor, J). | Finally FSU hits a Cover-2 beater. Pass Protection is perfect. Keith Gavin is inbetween the corner and safety, and Blackman hits him perfectly in stride. |
Play reviewed and stands
Fs | 1-10 | at Wf20 | 22 | Patrick, J rush up middle for 3 yards to the WF17 (Ejiofor, D). | Inside zone, FSU offensive line handles the slants better than before, but Patrick isn't quick enough to get to the hole and avoid the backside defender. If Akers is in for this, assuming he hits the right hole, he might score. |
Fs | 2-7 | at Wf17 | 22 | Patrick, J rush draw play for loss of 1 yard to the WF18 (Dunn, W;Dawson, G). | Zone Extra, Dickerson loses his footing at the snap and gets rolled by the nose while trying to reach him. He ends up rolling into Minshew and creating a big pile. This messes up the read for Patrick as he has to hesitate and ends up having no where to go. |
Fs | 3-8 | at Wf18 | 22 | Blackman, J deep pass incomplete to Saunders, M, QB hurry by Ejiofor, D. | Max protection off play-action, Blackman just overshoots Saunders in the corner of the end zone. Saunders had a bad game with multiple missed blocks, and couldn't get to this ball. |

Fs | 1-10 | at Fs28 | 11 pistol | Akers, C rush right for 8 yards to the FS36 (Bassey, E). | Counter, excellent blocking from the offensive line, Akers gets what is blocked. |
Fs | 2-2 | at Fs36 | 21 | Akers, C rush up middle for 6 yards to the FS42, 1ST DOWN FS (Bates, J). | Inside zone, gets the first down, well blocked by offensive line. |
Fs | 1-10 | at Fs42 | 11 pistol | Blackman, J throw away pass incomplete. | James Blackman is not pressured, but leaves the pocket for no reason. Compounding the error, if he had elected to scramble left, and not right, he would probably have a first down of yardage. |
Fs | 2-10 | at Fs42 | 11 pistol | Blackman, J sacked for loss of 12 yards to the FS30 (Dunn, W), PENALTY WF holding (Williams, Jab) 10 yards to the WF48, 1ST DOWN FS, NO PLAY. | Blackman has five full seconds of protection here, and the reason he is sacked is because Wake Forest was holding the receivers, so they could not get open. |
Fs | 1-10 | at Wf48 | 11 Pistol | Rasul, A rush right for 9 yards to the WF39 (Rodney, Z). | Power to the boundary blocked up really well. Leonard and Minshew get good movement doubling the 3 tech before Leonard gets up to the second level to get a piece of the backside backer. Dickerson pulls and gets a log on the LB and Gavin is able to come inside and seal the safety. Rasul does what he should to hit the hole a make the corner miss for a nice gain on first down. |
Fs | 2-1 | at Wf39 | 21 | Rasul, A rush up middle for no gain to the WF39 (Yarbary, W;Williams, Jab). | Nobody misses a block, they just don't get enough movement. Eberle is too high taking on the linebacker, and his inability to make the block hurts the play. Not a good game from him. |
Fs | 3-1 | at Wf39 | 22 | Patrick, J rush up middle for no gain to the WF39 (Williams, Jab;Dawson, G). | Tight end Mavin Saunders blocks the wrong man, and the man he should have blocked makes the tackle. This is another example of a mistake by a position other than offensive line that easily gets blamed on the line. |
