With Florida State 1-3 for the first time in 43 years, anger from the FSU fanbase has been directed at just about every member of the Seminoles’ coaching staff.
The biggest target of the ire by far, though, has been FSU defensive coordinator Charles Kelly.
Kelly’s defense, solid for most of FSU’s loss to Miami, allowed two touchdown drives in the final six minutes, including a 75-yard game-winning drive in the final 1:24 of the game.
This is hardly the first time a Kelly-led defense has cost FSU a game with a poor performance in the closing minutes.
It has become such a trend, in fact, that one FSU fan created a GoFundMe page to raise money for Kelly’s buyout.
In spite of this, the players Kelly coaches continue to stand behind him in the face of very public criticism.
“He’s been helping us a lot,” FSU cornerback Levonta Taylor said of how the defense views Kelly. “He’s been calling the right stuff. We just have to continue to get better and improve as a defense.”
“He’s doing a very good job.”
