FSU football film review: Defense vs. Syracuse

New, 5 comments

Florida State held Syracuse to 4.9 yards per play on the day.

NCAA Football: Syracuse at Florida State Glenn Beil-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome back to our weekly film review sessions of Florida State’s 2017 season. Every play broken down, with video and analysis.

As always, this content is best viewed on a computer or tablet, not on a phone.

As a whole, Florida State did a fairly good job of defending Syracuse’s hurry up offense. The Orange ran an impressive 95 plays for 463 yards, but only averaged 4.9 yards per play in the game.

The run game was nonexistent from Syracuse, with its running backs combining for 40 yards on 18 carries. The vast majority of Syracuse’s production on the day came from quarterback Eric Dungey (278 passing, 109 rushing).

Derrick Nnadi and the defensive line were able to get consistent pressure throughout the game and racked up six tackles for loss and three sacks. In the film review, we also mention a few opportunities where Josh Sweat was a split second away from a sack as well.

Of course, FSU played a lot of 4-1-6 (or dime) packages in this game due to the offense that Syracuse was running. This meant a lot of playing time for freshmen like Stanford Samuels, Hamsah Nasirildeen, and Cyrus Fagan. Each had their ups and downs, but overall had solid performances.

Syracuse had 16 total drives, but only five of those were long drives of 76, 72, 46, 75, and 57-yards. The other 11 drives that Syracuse ran in this game accounted for 137 yards, or around 12-yards per drive.

FSU Defense vs Syracuse

Play Down Distance Spot Personnel Analysis
Play Down Distance Spot Personnel Analysis
FIRST QUARTER
Syracuse drive start at 15:00
Dungey, E. at QB for Syracuse. 1 10 SU25
Philips, E. rush end around left for loss of 1 yard to the SU24 (Taylor, L), clock 14:40. 1 10 SU25 4-1-6 Power Read play to the field and Dungy gives to the WR on the sweep. Meyers does a great job filling on the edge and occupying two blockers to force the ball carrier wide. Talyor uses his quickness to beat the block of the receiver and wrap and finish on the tackle.
Dungey, E. slant pass complete to Philips, E. for 6 yards to the SU30 (Meyers, K), clock 14:16. 2 11 SU24 4-1-6 FSU rushes five and plays Cover 1 with all three defenders to the field playing off coverage. It's easy pitch and catch for Syracuse as they hit a slant to the #3 receiver. Good tackle by Meyers in the open field.
Dungey, E. slant pass complete to Philips, E. for 9 yards to the SU39, 1ST DOWN SU, clock 13:58. 3 5 SU30 4-1-6 Cover 1 Robber vs. a 3x1 Trey formation. Interesting technique from Meyers vs. the slot here. He's not in press but he's not really off either as he's aligned about 3 yards from the receiver. He's playing outside leverage on the receiver and expecting help inside form Derwin who's rolling down to the middle. Derwin is locked on the QB and does not see the receiver breaking on the slant so he's unable to disrupt the throw.
Dungey, E. rush quarterback draw for 2 yards to the SU41 (Sweat, J), clock 13:43. 1 10 SU39 4-1-6 Power Read again off jet action from the slot receiver with FSU playing a 40 front with three down linemen. With Sweat in a 4i, he occupies the tackle so Matt Thomas is able to go unblocked to the ball, forcing Dungy to cut back once he keeps on the option. He tries to cut back but Sweat is able to shed the tackle and make the stop. Good discipline form Sweat on the play.
Strickland, D. rush over right tackle for no gain to the SU41 (Nnadi, D), clock 13:05. 2 8 SU41 4-1-6 Zone Read from Cuse. Dungy is clearly hurting here as he gives the ball to the RB. A great play from Nnadi as he stays low out of his stance and uses his hands to disengage the guard and make the tackle at the line of scrimmage.
Dungey, E. sideline pass intercepted by James, D at the FS47, James, D return 0 yards to the FS47. 3 8 SU41 4-0-7 Cover 1 Robber with James rolled up as a linebacker. He has man responsibility on the running back who runs a wheel route. Really good awareness by James, knowing it is 3&8, he takes a deep angle to stay on top of the back rather than pressing him early and getting into a trail position. This allows him to stay on top of the rout, read the QB and play the ball in the air.
Drive Summary: 6 Plays, 16 yards, 2:25 used.
SYRACUSE drive start at 10:02. 1 10 SU25
Mahoney, Z. at QB for Syracuse. 1 10 SU25
Strickland, D. rush up middle for 1 yard to the SU26 (Sweat, J), clock 09:42. 1 10 SU25 4-1-6 RPO from Cuse. Run play is a trap with the backside tackle kicking out the 3 tech. Pass play is a receiver screen to the boundary with the playside tackle releasing as a lead blocker. Dungy gives to the running back. Christmas squeezes and stays square to close the space for the back while Sweat and Nnadi both win their matchups to get in on the stop.
Mahoney, Z. shovel pass pass complete to Strickland, D. for 1 yard to the SU27 (Nnadi, D), clock 09:15. 2 9 SU26 4-1-6 Shovel pass to the back with the backside guarding pulling and leading. Sweat again in a 4i technique and again disrupts the play. He beats the tackle and knocks the puller off his track. Nnadi completly manhandles the down block of the guard as he tosses hin out of the way and makes the tackle.
Mahoney, Z. sideline pass complete to Ishmael, S. for 12 yards to the SU39, 1ST DOWN SU (McFadden, T), clock 08:37. 3 8 SU27 4-1-6 Cover 1 with a five man rush and Marshall blizting on a delay. McFadden in press to the boundary and gets beat on a stop route at the sticks. McFadden gets lacksadasical with his technique here and tries to use too much hands near the chains rather than sinking his hips and using his feet to stay on the hip of the receiver.
Strickland, D. rush over right guard for 1 yard to the SU40 (Nnadi, D;Nasirildeen, H), clock 08:14. 1 10 SU39 4-1-6 Zone Read and the QB gives. Nnadi and Sweat are dominating up front. Both play with great pad level, gets hands on the linemen and hold their ground to clog the lanes for the running back. This is awesome hustle by Nasrildeen who's playing with a different level of effort than the rest of the back seven on this play. He comes up from the deep safety spot to get in on the tackle.
Mahoney, Z. rush quarterback draw for 1 yard to the SU41 (Sweat, J), clock 07:51. 2 9 SU40 4-1-6 Power Read again from Cuse but this time they loop the playside tackle to the outside and around Sweat as he is the read key. Impressive play by Sweat as he initially steps to the sweep, so the QB keeps the ball. Sweat is able to re-direct and make the tackle. near the line of scrimmage.
Mahoney, Z. middle left pass complete to Philips, E. for 9 yards to the 50 yardline, 1ST DOWN SU (Meyers, K), clock 07:20. 3 8 SU41 4-0-7 Not sure of the coverage here as some players appear to be playing man and some appear to be playing zone. Regardless, Meyers is beat over the slot on a curl route. Meyers starts in press but backpedals at the snap with his eyes on the QB so he is not able to effective play tight to the curl route.
Mahoney, Z. sideline pass incomplete to Riley, S., clock 07:15. 1 10 SU50 4-1-6 Syracuse play actions and tries to hit a comback to the field from the opposite hash with FSU rushing three and playing a spot drop 2 high zone coverage. The QB doesn't quite have the arm to get it there as the ball bounces in front of the recevier.
Mahoney, Z. middle right pass complete to Philips, E. for 7 yards to the FS43, clock 07:00. 2 10 SU50 4-1-6 Cover 1 Robber vs. Empty. Derwin has man on the slot and is playing about 9 yards off the ball so it's a pretty easy pitch and catch for Cuse on a quick hitch route to get themselves to a manageable 3rd down.
Mahoney, Z. crossing pass incomplete to Riley, S. (James, D), clock 06:45. 3 3 FS43 4-1-6 FSU rushes three and plays zone vs. Empty. This is actually good pattern matching coverage from FSU to the trips side. Derwin is reading the #3 receiver, who breaks short so Deriwn takes his eyes to #2 and is able to drive on the dig route and nearly intercept the ball.
Timeout Florida State, clock 06:45. 4 3 FS43
Mahoney, Z. punt 37 yards to the FS6, downed. 4 3 FS43
Drive Summary: 9 Plays, 32 yards, 3:28 used.
SYRACUSE drive start at 03:46. 1 10 FS38
Neal, M. rush over left end for 8 yards to the FS30 (Thomas, M;McFadden, T), clock 03:28. 1 10 FS38 4-1-6 Cuse goes trips closed and runs outside zone to the nub of the formation to the boundary. Thomas has his eyes in the wrong place and is really slow to react to the run action and get to his correct fit, allowing the ball carrier to hit the hole and get a sizeable gain on first down.
Mahoney, Z. slant pass incomplete to Ishmael, S. (Sweat, J), clock 03:24. 2 2 FS30 4-1-6 Same formation from Cuse and this time they run and RPO off the same outside zone action. QB pulls and tries to hit the slot on a slant vs. more off coverage from FSU. Fortunately for FSU, Sweat makes a play and gets his hands up to bat the ball near the line of scrimmage.
Neal, M. rush over left guard for no gain to the FS30 (Christmas, D), clock 03:08. 3 2 FS30 4-1-6 Cuse trades the formation and runs Split Zone Read to the short side. FSU in a 40 front with Burns aligned outside the tackle. Burns is playing the QB so the QB is forced to give the ball to the back. The FSU DL continues to dominate as both Christmas and Nnadi whips their man and corral the ball carrier at the line.
Murphy, C. field goal attempt from 48 BLOCKED, recovered by FS TEAM at FS0 spot at FS0, clock 02:41 (blocked by Thomas, M), touchback, Thomas, M for 10 yards to the FS30. 4 2 FS30
Drive Summary: 4 Plays, 8 yards, 1:05 used.
SECOND QUARTER
SYRACUSE drive start at 14:47. 1 10 SU03
SU ball on SU4. 1 10 SU03
Neal, M. rush over left guard for 1 yard to the SU5 (Wilkerson, J), clock 14:18. 1 10 SU04 3-4 2 back Power. Wilkerson and Wilson hold their ground up front and clog the lant for the back.
Mahoney, Z. slant pass complete to Ishmael, S. for 6 yards to the SU11 (McFadden, T), clock 14:03. 2 9 SU05 3-4 Cover 1 vs. Empty with McFadden aligned with inside leverage in press over the slot. Poor technique from McFadden as he hops backward at the snap and gives up the inside on a slant.
Mahoney, Z. sideline pass incomplete to Neal, M., clock 13:55. 3 3 SU11 3-4 Cuse goes tempo and again lines up in empty. FSU appears to be rinning Cover 4 here but Pugh does not get aligned wide enough before the ball is snap. The #2 receiver to the trip is open on a hitch but the QB over-throws him.
Hofrichter, S. punt 43 yards to the FS46, fair catch by Matthews, D. 4 3 SU11
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 7 yards, 0:58 used.
SYRACUSE drive start at 13:38. 1 10 SU25
Strickland, D. rush left for 8 yards to the SU33, out-of-bounds (Nasirildeen, H), clock 13:31. 1 10 SU25 4-1-6 Cuse comes back to the Outside Zone/Slant RPO out of trips closed and the QB gives to the back. Two run fit issues on the edge here. Wilkerson does not engage the TE so he releases up to the second level. Hamsah does not get a good run read and trigger in time to be the force player on the edge. He hesistates and this allows the TE to get up and on him and seal him.
Mahoney, Z. slant pass complete to Ishmael, S. for 5 yards to the SU38, 1ST DOWN SU (Samuels, S), clock 13:14. 2 2 SU33 4-1-6 FSU again cannot get aligned to the trips before the ball is snapped and the #2 receiver is uncovered. He runs a quick hitch and picks up the first down.
Strickland, D. rush over left tackle for loss of 1 yard to the SU37 (Wilkerson, J), clock 12:57. 1 10 SU38 4-1-6 Trap/Tunnel Screen RPO from 'Cuse again. The QB appears to make the correct read in giving to the back but the kick out blocker from 'Cuse runs by the man he is supposed to block. Wilkerson is then free to crash down and make the tackle in the backfield.
Mahoney, Z. middle left pass incomplete to Ishmael, S. (Samuels, S), clock 12:51. 2 11 SU37 4-1-6 Trips closed again from "Cuse as they are still trying to take advantage of the soft coverage or lack of coverage over the #2 receiver. Samuels is aligned about 9 yards off the receiver but he does make a good play to drive on the route and play through the hands of the receiver as the ball arrives to break it up.
Mahoney, Z. screen pass complete to Strickland, D. for loss of 4 yards to the SU33 (James, D), clock 12:31. 3 11 SU37 4-1-6 Same formation and this time 'Cuse tries to run a HB screen to the trips side. Sweat uses a nice punch and dip move to win on the edge and get pressure. FSU in zone coverage so James and Marshall are able to have eyes on the QB and diagnose the play early to trigger and get there before the linemen can get hands on them.
Hofrichter, S. punt 47 yards to the FS20, fair catch by Matthews, D. 4 15 SU33
Drive Summary: 5 Plays, 8 yards, 1:35 used.
SYRACUSE drive start at 10:22. 1 10 SU24
Dungey, E. at QB for Syracuse. 1 10 SU24
Dungey, E. deep pass incomplete to Ishmael, S. (James, D), clock 10:14. 1 10 SU24 4-1-6 The 'Cuse starting QB re-enters the game and they immediately throw deep vs. Cover 1 from FSU. Derwin is the deep safety but he never gets all the way to the middle of the field so he doesn't have as far to go when he sees Dungey with his shoulders toward the wide side of the field. Both James and Taylor are in good position to play the ball as Derwin tips it to himself before Taylor runs into him causing neither to be able to come up with the pick.
Dungey, E. throw away pass incomplete, QB hurry by Aime, W, clock 10:07. 2 10 SU24 4-1-6 Cuse motions to a 2x2 look and FSU rushes three while playing quarters behind it. They appear to have everyone covered up downfield as Dungey leaves the pocket and scrambles to his right. Aime does a nice job of keeping contain and forcing the QB to throw it away.
Dungey, E. crossing pass complete to Ishmael, S. for 21 yards to the SU45, 1ST DOWN SU (McFadden, T), clock 09:54. 3 10 SU24 4-0-7 FSU in 2-man vs. empty from 'Cuse. McFadden in press over the slot and again shows poor technique. He gives too much ground off the receiver's release and easily gives up the inside. No excuse for giving up the inside when you are starting with inside leverage and know you have help outside and over the top.
Dungey, E. rush quarterback scramble for 4 yards to the SU49, clock 09:40. 1 10 SU45 4-1-6 Empty with FSU in quarters, rushing three. Appears to be a bust of front as FSU has zero defenders rushing the passer to Dungey's left. He's able to easily escape the pocket and pick up a few yards.
Dungey, E. shovel pass pass complete to Pierce, R. for no gain to the SU49 (Sweat, J;Fagan, C), clock 08:59. 2 6 SU49 4-1-6 FSU in Cover 1 with the safety (Fagan) rolling down to play man on the TE. 'Cuse tries to run a shovel pass to the TE. This is the same play NC State was able to score on at one point vs. FSU. 'Cuse does not execute the play as well as the QB takes too long to deliver the shovel pass. Fagan does a nice job sorting through traffic and making the tackle at the line of scrimmage. Sweat also mandhandles two different offensive linemen on this play to help bring down the ball carrier.
Neal, M. rush over left tackle for 4 yards to the FS47 (Thomas, M), clock 08:20. 3 6 SU49 4-1-6 2-back zone read and the QB gives. Thomas is unblocked to the ball carrier and is able to rbing him down before he can pick up the first down.
Dungey, E. deep pass complete to Custis, J. for 47 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN SU, TOUCHDOWN, clock 07:55. 4 2 FS47 4-1-6 Cuse lines up in a Trey formation and then motions the back out to the single receiver side to get in empty. FSU does not communication the coverage adjustment to the motion correctly and the slot receiver runs free down the seam. Fisher mentioned FSU had someone aligned on the wrong side of the field who should of came over with the motion.
Murphy, C. kick attempt good. 1 0 FS03
SYRACUSE 7, FSU 14
Drive Summary: 7 Plays, 76 yards, 2:27 used.
SYRACUSE drive start at 07:29. 1 10 SU25
Strickland, D. rush for no gain to the SU25 (Christmas, D). 1 10 SU25 4-1-6 Another RPO from 'Cuse where the QB gives to the back on Inside Zone. FSU in Cover 1 with Hamsah rolling late into the box with c gap run responsibility. Christmas whips the left tackle and makes the stop at the line with Hamsah also getting in on the tackle.
Dungey, E. pass complete to Ishmael, S. for 8 yards to the SU33 (Marshall, T). 2 10 SU25 4-1-6 Cuse motions the back out of the backfield again to get to empty. This is the same look they scored on earlier. FSU in a soft quarters coverage so the slot receiver is able to find a hole in the zone on a curl route to get into a manageable third down. Marshall needed to get more width here and take away the curl.
Dungey, E. pass incomplete, QB hurry by Wilson, M. 3 2 SU33 4-1-6 Cover 1 from FSU. 'Cuse in a trey formation. They run the TE to the flat and the #2 receiver on a slant to try and cross up the man coverage. It works as the slant is wide open over the middle. Fortunately for FSU the QB does not see it quick enough. By the time he does, he's feeling pressure from Christmas and Wilson and is forced to leave the pocket and get rid of the ball.
Hofrichter, S. punt 49 yards to the FS18, Matthews, D return -4 yards to the FS14 (Hudson, C.). 4 2 SU33
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 8 yards, 1:04 used.
SYRACUSE drive start at 04:20. 1 10 SU28
Dungey, E. rush quarterback scramble for 8 yards to the SU36 (Marshall, T;Samuels, S), clock 03:59. 1 10 SU28 4-1-6 Quarters coverage and a three man rush vs. empty. All five receivers run intermediate to deep route to run off the underneath zone defenderds and Dungey has room to run as a result.
PENALTY SU false start (Philips, E.) 5 yards to the SU31, clock 03:59. 2 2 SU36
Dungey, E. deep pass incomplete to Riley, S., clock 03:46. 2 7 SU31 4-1-6 Cover 1 vs. a 2x2 look. Hamsah in in man coverage over the slot to the boundary and 'Cuse tries to run an out-n-up on him. Excellent coverage by Hamsah as he collisions the receiver and then turns to run with him, attached to his hip as the ball is slightly overthrown.
Dungey, E. rush quarterback draw for 30 yards to the FS39, 1ST DOWN SU (Samuels, S). 3 7 SU31 4-0-7 Cover 1 with a five-man pressure. Hamsah has man on the back but also has to fit vs. the run on a draw play. 'Cuse runs the draw and he's unblocked to the hole but he bites the QB's fake inside and gives up the outside for a big gain.
Strickland, D. rush up middle for 4 yards to the FS35 (Burns, B), PENALTY FS substitution infraction (Fagan, C) 5 yards to the FS34, NO PLAY, clock 03:30. 1 10 FS39 Surprised?
Dungey, E. deep pass complete to Ishmael, S. for 34 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN SU, TOUCHDOWN, clock 03:16. 1 5 FS34 4-1-6 McFadden in press man vs. Ishmael to the boundary. This is actually pretty good coverage from McFadden. He's in phase with the receiver down the field and Ishmael uses a subtle push off right befoee the ball arrives to gain seperation and make the play.
Murphy, C. kick attempt good. 1 0 FS03
SYRACUSE 14, FLORIDA STATE 21
Drive Summary: 4 Plays, 72 yards, 1:04 used.
SYRACUSE drive start at 02:06. 1 10 SU45
Dungey, E. rush quarterback draw for 3 yards to the SU48 (Nnadi, D), clock 01:47. 1 10 SU45 4-1-6 QB draw. 'Cuse gets a solid double team on Nnadi and Thomas is slow to fill once he sees the draw. Pretty awesome hustle and effort by Nnadi to keep fighting through the double team and make the play.
Dungey, E. throw away pass incomplete, QB hurry by Christmas, D, clock 01:36. 2 7 SU48 4-1-6 Empty from 'Cuse and FSU is slow to get the coverage communicated. 'Cuse runs two curls to the short side and FSU's underneath defenders actually drop to the correct spots to take away the routes.
Dungey, E. sacked for loss of 3 yards to the SU45 (TEAM). 3 7 SU48 4-1-6 Cuse goes with a trey formation and rolls Dungey toward the trips. They have the TE fall seconds after the snap and then he gets up to try and sneak down the field to the backside. FSU is not fooled in coverage and Sweat is able to create pressure in the face of Dungey. Sweat does give up contain but FSU still appears to have everyone covered downfield as Dungey accidentally steps out of bounds before throwing the ball.
Clock 01:28. 4 10 SU45
Hofrichter, S. punt 44 yards to the FS11, Matthews, D return 0 yards to the FS11, fumble by Matthews, D recovered by SU Cullen, S. at FS11. 4 10 SU45
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 0 yards, 0:48 used.
SYRACUSE drive start at 01:18. 1 10 FS11
Dungey, E. rush over left guard for 5 yards to the FS6 (Pugh, J). 1 10 FS11 3-4 2-back Split Zone Read with the H-back arcing to lead for the QB if he pulls. Dungey does pull and Pugh is in position to make the play. Pugh is a bit out of control here though, as he turns inside, then outside, then back in again before making the tackle. He needs to stay a little more disciplined here and keep his shoulders square as he plays the QB near the line of scrimmage.
Timeout Syracuse, clock 01:10. 2 5 FS06
Strickland, D. rush over left guard for 2 yards to the FS4 (James, D;Pugh, J). 2 5 FS06 3-4 Cuse runs the Split Zone Read again but this time Dungey gives. Nnadi gets the initial penetration here that causes the back to bounce. Pugh gets control of the block of the TE and this closes any room for the back to run as James is unblocked on the edge to make the tackle.
Timeout Syracuse, clock 01:04. 3 3 FS04
Dungey, E. crossing pass incomplete to Philips, E. (Nnadi, D), clock 01:01. 3 3 FS04 3-4 Cuse shifts and motions to an empty look and FSU catches a huge break as they do not line up correctly and leave a receiver wide open on the outside. 'Cuse does not see it. They instead throws to the #3 receiver on a slant vs. off coverage from Samuels. He is also open but Nnadi saves the play and gets his hands on the ball at the line.
Timeout Florida State, clock 01:01. 4 3 FS04
Timeout Florida State, clock 01:01. 4 3 FS04
Dungey, E. deep pass incomplete to Ishmael, S., QB hurry by James, D. 4 3 FS04 4-0-7 Cuse goes trips closed and runs a QB sweep to the nub. Burns makes a great play to occupy two blockers while getting some penetration and giving the QB nowhere to run. Dungey decides to spin back to the field side before throwing up a prayer to the endzone. The ball in thrown out of bounds but Hamsah inexplicably jumps up and tries to throw the ball back in play to a teammate. Not smart, but luckily for FSU the ball falls to the ground for an incompletion. Jimbo explanation: "I have no idea why he would do that."
Drive Summary: 4 Plays, 7 yards, 0:31 used.
THIRD QUARTER
SYRACUSE drive start at 13:28. 1 10 SU30
Dungey, E. at QB for Syracuse. 1 10 SU30
Dungey, E. rush over left end for 1 yard to the SU31 (Marshall, T), clock 13:13. 1 10 SU30 4-1-6 QB keeper all the way, but Dungey fakes to the WR coming in motion on the jet sweep. Nnadi gets a good push to disrupt the timing of this run and Marshall, who is playing essentially LB here, comes in from the backside to clean up
Dungey, E. sideline pass incomplete to Strickland, D., QB hurry by Christmas, D, clock 12:58. 2 9 SU31 4-1-6 Three man rush. Syracuse seems to be running vertical routes. Dungey holds onto the ball for a bit too long and Nnadi emerges in his face, which forces him to scramble. A receiver is open on the scramble drill, but the pass is incomplete.
Dungey, E. rush quarterback draw for 29 yards to the FS40, 1ST DOWN SU, out-of-bounds, clock 12:39. 3 9 SU31 4-0-7 QB keeper all the way. Burns disguises as a LB, but rushes. Sweat gets tripped over the LT, which opens up a big hole for Dungey. Fagan completely whiffs on the tackle here as he goes for the kill shot instead of wrapping up.
Dungey, E. wide receiver screen left pass complete to Philips, E. for 8 yards to the FS32, out-of-bounds (Burns, B), clock 12:06. 1 10 FS40 4-1-6 Burns motions out, but sneaks back in. Syracuse throws the screen to the side Burns is coming from. FSU is playing way off coverage, which allows the WR some space to work before getting pushed out of bounds.
Dungey, E. deep pass incomplete to Ishmael, S. (Taylor, L), clock 11:38. 2 2 FS32 4-1-6 FSU looks to playing Cover-3, with Burns dropping into coverage on the trips side. Nnadi is triple teamed and the OTs push Christmas and Sweat out of the play. Dungey launches a pass on the vertical route, but Taylor is there to defend it. Good coverage.
Dungey, E. rush over right guard for 2 yards to the FS30, 1ST DOWN SU (Thomas, M;Nnadi, D), clock 11:32. 3 2 FS32 4-1-6 QB keeper again. Dungey plows forward for a first down. Television replay doesn't show pre-snap alignment or anything. Marshall appears to be coming on a blitz.
Dungey, E. middle pass complete to Butler, D. for 6 yards to the FS24 (Meyers, K), clock 11:04. 1 10 FS30 4-1-6 FSU looks to be playing Cover-3 and Kaindoh fakes the rush before dropping into coverage. Syracuse runs that 'Wake screen' type of mesh concept, with one player running to take up space and free up another WR. Marshall is taken out of the play by this motion, which frees up a WR running underneath.
Strickland, D. rush toss sweep right for no gain to the FS24 (Marshall, T). 2 4 FS24 4-1-6 Option to the boundary side. Good push by FSU forces Dungey to toss this to the RB and Marshall makes a good tackle for no gain.
Dungey, E. rush up middle for no gain to the FS24 (Kaindoh, J), clock 10:10. 3 4 FS24 4-1-6 QB counter, with the FB and OG as pulling blockers. FSU is essentially playing a five-man front with Marshall and Kaindoh as the OLBs. Dungey runs into the back of one of his linemen, which allows Kaindoh the oppportunity to make the tackle after dropping into coverage.
Murphy, C. field goal attempt from 42 GOOD, clock 09:35. 4 4 FS24
SYRACUSE 17, FLORIDA STATE 21
Drive Summary: 10 Plays, 46 yards, 3:53 used.
SYRACUSE drive start at 03:10. 1 10 SU25
Dungey, E. middle left pass complete to Philips, E. for 7 yards to the SU32 (Nasirildeen, H), clock 02:52. 1 10 SU25 4-1-6 Cover-3 again from FSU, with the receiver finding the soft spot in the zone between Burns and Nasirildeen. Sweat is a split second away from a sack after pushing the OL back into Dungey's face.
Dungey, E. crossing pass incomplete to Philips, E., dropped pass, clock 02:34. 2 3 SU32 4-1-6 This is actually a good throw from Dungey between the zones, but the receiver just can't get a hand on the ball. Burns dropping into coverage again.
Dungey, E. middle pass incomplete to Philips, E., clock 02:28. 3 3 SU32 4-1-6 Another dropped pass, but this is good coverage from FSU on third down. Jimbo said it was a good job by the linebacker to green dog this. Way to get off the field.
Hofrichter, S. punt 46 yards to the FS22, Matthews, D return 15 yards to the FS37 (Cullen, S.;Whitner, K.). 4 3 SU32 Playing with fire here. Catch this in the air.

Dungey, E. sideline pass complete to Ishmael, S. for 8 yards to the SU19, out-of-bounds (Meyers, K;Fagan, C), clock 00:35. 1 10 SU11 4-1-6 FSU looks to be in Cover-3 here and the jet motion from the WR freezes Meyers playing the short zone, which allows the #1 WR on the comeback route to find an open spot.
Dungey, E. middle left pass complete to Philips, E. for 10 yards to the SU29, 1ST DOWN SU, clock 00:20. 2 2 SU19 4-1-6 Three man rush with Burns dropping into coverage. FSU is playing off coverage, which allows the wide receiver in a slot to make an easy catch on the curl route.
Dungey, E. middle right pass complete to Philips, E. for 7 yards to the SU36. 1 10 SU29 4-1-6 Three man rush yet again as Cuse goes five wide. Man coverage across the board and Meyers has good coverage on the slot receiver, but he makes a good catch for a first down.

Dungey, E. crossing pass incomplete to Philips, E. (Nasirildeen, H), clock 14:03. 2 3 SU47 4-1-6 Man coverage across the board and FSU rushes five. Dungey wants the crossing route over the middle, but Nasirildeen is there to bat the ball away. Good coverage from the true freshman.
Dungey, E. rush quarterback draw for 2 yards to the SU49 (Aime, W), clock 13:46. 3 3 SU47 4-1-6 Straight QB keeper, likely intended to make the fourth down opportunity more manageable. Aime has a good rush from the right side and brings Dungey down short of the line to gain.
Dungey, E. rush over left guard for no gain to the SU49 (Burns, B). 4 1 SU49 4-1-6 FSU shows a six man front with man coverage across the board. Burns is playing just off of Jones' shoulder and takes down Dungey as Jones engages with the center. The QB sneak here was fairly obvious and FSU played it well.
Drive Summary: 8 Plays, 38 yards, 2:20 used.

Dungey, E. sacked for loss of 1 yard to the SU14 (Sweat, J). 2 5 SU15 4-1-6 Good coverage from FSU forces Dungey to scramble. FSU rushes three and drops eight, which is more than enough because Syracuse is running fairly short routes. Eventually, Sweat breaks free and gets credit for the sack.

Dungey wants the receiver running a go route, but his ball placement is terrible and lands out of bounds. This ball might have been uncatchable, but they flag McFadden for pass interference anyways.
Dungey, E. rush quarterback scramble for 4 yards to the SU31 (Nnadi, D), clock 11:08. 1 10 SU27 4-1-6 Syracuse runs vertical routes but FSU provides good coverage down the field. Dungey is forced to step up in the pocket and scramble where Nnadi is waiting to take him down. Good defense.
Dungey, E. rush for loss of 6 yards to the SU25. 2 6 SU31 4-1-6 FSU brings five rushers and plays Marshall as a spy. Dungey, E. crossing pass incomplete to Philips, E. (James, D), clock 06:12. 2 9 SU26 4-1-6 Five man rush. Dungey wants the crossing route over the middle, but James is there to break up the pass. They've been running a bunch of these crossing routes all game.
Dungey, E. post pass complete to Philips, E. for 18 yards to the SU44, 1ST DOWN SU, clock 06:06. 3 9 SU26 4-1-6 Man under and Marshall is matched up one-on-one against the slot receiver. Marshall is a bit too slow in his turn and is Dungey connects up the seam for a first down. Jimbo said because the call is man under, Marshall needs to be on a low hip so he can make this transition easier.
Dungey, E. middle right pass complete to Strickland, D. for 12 yards to the FS44, 1ST DOWN SU (James, D;Thomas, M), clock 05:48. 1 10 SU44 4-1-6 FSU looks to be in Cover-3 again with a receiver running a curl route, which he somewhat turns into an in route to help his QB out. Dungey, E. sideline pass complete to Ishmael, S. for 6 yards to the FS38, out-of-bounds, clock 05:30. 1 10 FS44 4-2-5 Pugh checks into the game at ILB. FSU looks to be playing Cover-2 with Burns in the flat coverage. Dungey checks it down to the checkdown receiver, who spins Burns around and picks up a first. It's almost like a 6-6, 230-pound pass rusher shouldn't be playing coverage outside the hash marks, but that's just me,
Dungey, E. sideline pass complete to Ishmael, S. for 5 yards to the FS33, 1ST DOWN SU (Burns, B), clock 05:07. 2 4 FS38 4-2-5 Samuels is playing bail against a curl route, which is an easy recipe for a first down. Burns is once again in coverage here to make the tackle. FSU has also flipped the field with Samuels playing BCB while McFadden is at FCB.
Dungey, E. sideline pass incomplete to Strickland, D., QB hurry by Aime, W, clock 04:48. 1 10 FS33 4-2-5 Cuse motions to empty. Dungey, E. middle pass incomplete to Philips, E., clock 04:45. 2 10 FS33 4-1-6 FSU brings a five man blitz with man coverage. Syracuse actually has a great counter to this in a tunnel screen with two OL set up to block, but the immediate pressure forces Dungey to make a bad throw that's nearly picked by Derwin.

Dungey, E. rush quarterback scramble for 6 yards to the FS6, 1ST DOWN SU (Jones, F), clock 03:26. 3 3 FS12 4-1-6 Vertical routes from Syracuse against a three man rush from FSU gives Dungey plenty of time in the pocket. He is eventually forced out by Burns crashing down and Jones gives chase. Thomas crashes down a little too hard on the chase on a bad angle and Dungey scrambles up the sideline for a first down in a manner reminiscent to Trubisky in 2016.
Neal, M. rush toss sweep right for 3 yards to the FS3 (Christmas, D;Burns, B), clock 03:04. 1 0 FS06 4-1-6 Good penetration from Nnadi allows Christmas and Burns to combine for the stop. Good red zone defense.
