FSU football film review: Defense vs. Miami

A great showing by Florida State’s defense is spoiled by the Seminoles’ poor offense.

Welcome back to our weekly film review sessions of Florida State’s 2018 season. Every play broken down, with video and analysis.

As always, this content is best viewed on a computer or tablet, not on a phone.

“This game really showed the ceiling and floor of the Miami offense with N’Kosi Perry at QB.”

I made this comment in the Tomahawk Nation Slack chat following Florida State’s loss to Miami. On one hand, the Hurricanes went three-and-out six times in the ballgame. Miami’s offense could often not get movement at the point of attack and FSU’s defensive line racked up 12 tackles for loss.

On the other hand, Perry made some beautiful throws to win the game for the ’Canes. The 41-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brevin Jordan was right over the defender and hit Jordan in stride. When the Hurricanes were in the red zone, Perry was efficient and tossed four touchdowns in the game.

Overall, Florida State limited Miami to 3.9 yards per play and just 2.2 yards per rush. In most other situations, this would be enough to win a game (FSU’s own offense averaged 3.1 yards per play).

FSU’s defense line was near-unblockable in this game. Marvin Wilson had perhaps the best game of his career, showcasing his five-star ability for six tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Demarcus Christmas likewise contributed with five tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss and Brian Burns racked up 3 tackles for loss, two sacks and a critical forced fumble that led to an FSU field goal.

Apart from Kyle Meyers’ three pass interference penalties, the secondary played well. Miami’s electric receiver Jeff Thomas, whom Bud and Ingram pointed out as a potential threat in the pre-game podcast, was limited to just 76 yards on three catches. FSU’s linebackers were once again exposed in coverage, highlighted by the aforementioned 41-yard touchdown catch by Jordan over DeCalon Brooks.

FSU Defense vs. Miami

Play Down Distance Spot Personnel Analysis
Play Down Distance Spot Personnel Analysis
Miami (FL) drive start at 15:00 on H22
Homer, T rush for 1 yard to the UM23 (Jones, F;Jackson, D). 1 10 UM22 4-3 Base quarters for FSU and Miami runs ISO into the open B gap to the boundary. This was a play VaTech had success on early in the game vs. FSU. Miami inserts the H back into the gap and he gets a nice seal block on Brooks. Aime does a good job here of taking on the out block by the tackle, finding the ball carrier and disengaging to make the tackle. Also a really nice play by Fred Jones to win at the snap, stay low defeat the downblock from the play side.
Homer, T rush for 6 yards to the UM29 (Westbrook, A;Samuels, S). 2 9 UM23 4-3 Base quarters again and Miami runs another ISO play, this time out of pistol and into the A gap. Jones and Christmas do a good job taking on blocks at the LOS. DJack slightly overruns his gap and a small crease is created but both of FSU's safeties are reading run to pass vs. this look and are unblocked to the ball. Samuels could be a little faster with his read but it is still good enough to help minimize the gain.
Perry, N pass incomplete to Thomas, J. 3 3 UM29 4-3 Cover 1 vs. 3x1 trips. Samuels is off with outside leverage over the #2 WR to the field. Good call by Miami to throw the slant vs. this coverage. Samuels plays this good considering he does not have favorable leverage presnap. Perry just throws it poorly behind the WR and he can't make the grab.
Spicer, J punt 49 yards to the FS22, Matthews, D return 20 yards to the FS42, out-of-bounds (Knowles, R). 4 3 UM29
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 7 yards, 1:41 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 09:41 on H25
Perry, N pass complete to Langham, D for 9 yards to the UM34 (Meyers, K). 1 10 UM25 4-3 FSU in Cover 1 and Miami throws quick the outside WR to the boundary. Meyers is in good position with his press technique but gives up a little space at the break vs a bigger and more physcial WR. Perry throws this right on the break of the route too. Well executed by UM.
Dallas, D rush for 1 yard to the UM35, 1ST DOWN UM (Aime, W). 2 1 UM34 4-3 Cover 1 again but this time FSU is showing blitz from the field before dropping the Star into a robber coverage. Miami runs an Inside Zone/Bubble RPO out of a 2x2 look. He correctly gives the ball to the RB. Marvin Wilson into the game and gets excellent penetration to knock the RB off his track. DJack can't get off the block to make the play and then Aime just whiffs on the tackle. Good pursuit by the defense keeps this a minimal gain.
Perry, N sacked for loss of 7 yards to the UM28 (Wilson, M). 1 10 UM35 4-3 FSU blitzes 6 and runs a 3 deep/2 under coverage. Wilson loops outside with FSU's two inside LB's crossing through the middle. Miami's interior protection breaks down and Wilson is unblocked to the QB to get the sack. Miami had a WR open underneath but Perry lost his eye discipline with the pressure coming.
Dallas, D rush for 21 yards to the UM49, 1ST DOWN UM (Jackson, D). 2 17 UM28 4-3 This is a miscommunication and bust by the defense. Aime and Christmas are aligned to the field and both players slant inside but none of the backers (Woodbey or Jaackson) slant opposite to replace them. Miami has a well timed outside zone play called to the field. FSU in Cover 2 to the field and Woodbey and Taylor can't get off blocks. FSU somehow catches a break as the refs pickup the flag despite what looks to be an obvious horse collar by DJack.
Dallas, D rush for 2 yards to the FS49 (Brooks, D;Aime, W). 1 10 UM49 4-3 3x1 and Miami runs Zone Read to the boundary vs a base quarters look from FSU. Aime plays a "box" technique and has QB responsibility and forces the give. Brooks is a little slow to trigger and fill the B gap but he and Aime are able to muscle up and bring the ball carrier down.
Perry, N pass incomplete to Thomas, J. 2 8 FS49 4-3 Cover 1 vs. trips and Miami runs a drop back pass. FSU runs a twist to the boundary and their rushers do a good job keeping their rush lanes and containg Perry. Good initial coverage and Perry gets some happy feet before sailing the ball out of bounds and over his WR's head.
Perry, N pass incomplete to Cager, L (Taylor, L). 3 8 FS49 3-3-5 FSU's third down defense enters the game for the first time and they put 7 defenders on the LOS before rushing 4 and playing Cover 3 behind it. This is really good coverage awareness by Taylor to play tight to the sticks and not gain too much ground in his bail technique. As the ball arrives, he times his jump perfectly and plays violent through the hands of a much bigger WR and is able to get the PBU.
Spicer, J punt 24 yards to the FS25, out-of-bounds. 4 8 FS49
Drive Summary: 7 Plays, 26 yards, 2:59 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 04:15 on H17
Perry, N pass incomplete to Thomas, J. 1 10 UM17 Clip not available
Homer, T rush for 7 yards to the UM24 (Lytton, A). 2 10 UM17 Clip not available
Perry, N pass complete to Wiggins, D for 9 yards to the UM33, 1ST DOWN UM (Lytton, A;Nasirildeen, H). 3 3 UM24 4-3 Cover 1 vs trips and Miami goes to the slant to the boundary vs. press from Lytton. Just poor technique from Lytton. He immediately opens up his hip to the outside with the WR's initial stem and let's the WR cross his face back to this inside.
Homer, T rush for 4 yards to the UM37 (Robinson, J;Nasirildeen, H). 1 10 UM33 4-3 3x1 from Miami as they use a "check with me" at the line to try and get a favorable play. FSU doing a good job of breaking tendency from previous games and showing base looks presnap. Miami checks to an inside zone play and FSU has a run blitz called with the boundary safety inserting into the box. Brooks does a good job of taking on the offensive lineman with his outside pad while staying square and spilling the ball to the safety. Hamsah enters the box with bad intentions and stops the ball carrier in his tracks.
Homer, T rush for 5 yards to the UM42 (Samuel, A). 2 6 UM37 4-3 Outside zone. Burns is to the playside and does not set the edge as he flies way too far upfield, creating a big lane. Woodbey gets a poor presnap key on the tackle and steps backward before coming forward. This allows the tackle to get a good angle on him and Woodbey is unable to shed the block. Really good physicality from Samuel to come up and make the tackle vs a much bigger RB.
Perry, N rush for 2 yards to the UM44, 1ST DOWN UM (Aime, W). 3 1 UM42 4-3 Bear front from FSU as Perry walks under center and snaps for a QB sneak. Wilson is at nose and gets a bad jump on the ball and gives ground allowing Pretty to pick up the first.
Timeout Miami (FL), clock 00:53. 1 10 UM44
Dallas, D rush for 11 yards to the FS45, 1ST DOWN UM (Lytton, A;Fagan, C). 1 10 UM44 4-3 Split zone from Miami and FSU has their cross LB run blitz called with the boundary safety inserting into the box. Miami is able to seal the LB to the boundary and then crack the safety with the single WR to that side. Lytton is too slow to recognize the crack release and replace.
Dallas, D rush for loss of 1 yard to the FS46 (Christmas, D;Brooks, D). 1 10 FS45 4-3 Cover 1 and Miami runs inside zone. DJack gets a quick trigger into the A gap and forces the RB to bounce. Christmas playing a 2i to the playside. He dominates Miami's LG and is able to shed and make the tackle.
Start of 2nd quarter, clock 15:00. 2 11 FS46
Homer, T rush for 3 yards to the FS43 (Christmas, D). 2 11 FS46 4-3 Outside zone to the boundary and FSU in base quarters. Miami double teams Aime and pancakes him. Adonis Thomas completely overruns his gap and Christmas gets reached by the nose. Hamsah is unaccounted for and does a great job initally of triggering vs. the run and this allows him to beat the crack block but he's a little out of control and misses the tackle. The defense is flying to the ball though and this helps them really limit this gain.
Perry, N rush for 10 yards to the FS33, 1ST DOWN UM, out-of-bounds. 3 8 FS43 3-3-5 FSU plays a coverage they don't run often: 2-man with a spy. Brooks has QB resposibility if the QB runs and Brooks does a bad job here. Steps too far to the field and gives Perry a ton of space to run to the boundary.
Perry, N pass incomplete to Wiggins, D, PENALTY FS pass interference (Meyers, K) 15 yards to the FS18, 1ST DOWN UM, NO PLAY. 1 10 FS33 4-3 Miami goes play action and wants to take a shot as FSU plays quarters. Meyers does a good job being patient at the LOS and remains in phase with the WR through the route. He needs to trust his technique not panic with the ball in the air but instead he appears to grab the WR with his right hand in plain view for the official to call it.
Homer, T rush for 6 yards to the FS12 (Nasirildeen, H;Brooks, D). 1 10 FS18 4-3 Inside zone with FSU in base quarters. Fred Jones in a 2i and gets reached by the LG, creating a crease up the middle. Hamsah does a good job seeing run and coming up to support.
Homer, T rush for 3 yards to the FS9 (Wilson, M). 2 4 FS12 4-3 Counter trey off of jet sweep, FSU bringing pressure from the boundary/backside. The slant from FSU is just enough to keep DJack free as he is able to redirect and make the tackle with help from Wilson who shows great effort to win on the backside and get there in pursuit.
Dallas, D rush for loss of 1 yard to the FS10 (Brooks, D;Nasirildeen, H). 3 1 FS09 4-3 ISO from Miami but FSU is expecting run all the way as they have a run blitz called. Brooks does a great job triggering and making the H back miss while staying square and finding the ball carrier. Hamsah is walked up in the box and is able to help clean it up.
Perry, N pass complete to Cager, L for 10 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN UM, TOUCHDOWN, clock 11:26. 4 2 FS10 4-3 Miami throws the slant vs a true freshman corner in press man on the outside. Lytton is aligned too far off the line of scrimmage presnap and compounds this mistake by giving ground at the snap. This allows the WR a free release; space to stem outside and come back in without Lytton getting any hands on him.
Baxa, B kick attempt good. 1 G FS03
Drive Summary: 14 Plays, 83 yards, 7:49 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 09:43 on H21
Dallas, D rush for loss of 3 yards to the UM18 (Jones, F). 1 10 UM21 4-3 This is either a bust up front by Miami or a bad read from Perry. Fred Jones is at the 3 tech and is completly unblocked. He does a great job firing off the ball and getting the RB as the ball is handed off and finishes the play with a suplex of the ball carrier.
Perry, N pass incomplete to Harley, M. 2 13 UM18 4-3 FSU in quarters and Miami runs a 3 step drop from gun with a smash concept to the field. The FSU pass rush is ineffective this play and Perry has ample time to throw but his throw is way off the mark. Harley had beaten Sameuls badly on a corner route but the Miami QB can't make them pay.
Perry, N rush for 4 yards to the UM22 (Kaindoh, J). 3 13 UM18 3-3-5 FSU rushes 4 and plays Cover 3 behind. The route concepts from Miami only give Perry one option underneath and FSU has it covered. Before the deeper routes can open up, Perry senses pressure and has to leave the pocket and run. The zone defense from FSU allows it's defenders to see the QB and quickly rally to the ball once he takes off. The FSU underneath defenders appear to be making improvements in comparison to earlier games this season.
Spicer, J punt 53 yards to the FS25, Matthews, D return 0 yards to the FS25 (Knowles, R), PENALTY FS holding (Wilson, O) 10 yards to the FS15, 1st and 10, FS ball on FS15. 4 9 UM22
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 1 yards, 1:30 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 07:19 on H20
Perry, N pass incomplete to Homer, T. 1 10 UM20 4-3 Reverse pass from Miami. Good awareness by Taylor to stay back in coverage and see the RB going deep. The throw is too short and the RB can't make the catch.
Perry, N pass complete to Thomas, J for 27 yards to the UM47, 1ST DOWN UM, out-of-bounds. 2 10 UM20 4-3 Miami goes play action and wants to hit Thomas over the middle but FSU appears to be a good initial position from their quarters coverage. Perry uses his feet in the pocket until Aime gets caught peaking inside and gives up contain. Perry keeps his eyes downfield while moving to his right and delivers a strike to Thomas who was able to create some seperation as he made his way across the field.
Perry, N sacked for loss of 6 yards to the UM41 (Burns, B), fumble by Perry, N recovered by FS Brooks, D at UM43. 1 10 UM47 4-3 Play action again and Miami max protects with 3 WR's running routes. They leave Burns 1-on-1 with the LT though, and he uses a swipe move to free himself to bend the edge and knock the ball out as Perry cocks back to throw.
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 23 yards, 0:50 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 04:20 on H25
Dallas, D rush for 2 yards to the UM27 (Robinson, J;Brooks, D). 1 10 UM25 4-3 Zone read to the bounday with trips to the field. The boundary end (JRob) plays a "box" technique and takes the QB, with Brooks responsible for the B gap and the RB on the give. Perry correctly gives the ball but the Miami LT busts here and does not block Brooks who is free to the ball carrier.
Perry, N pass incomplete to Dallas, D, QB hurry by Burns, B. 2 8 UM27 4-3 Cover 1 from FSU and Miami has a well0timed screen call to their RB. Warner needs to pick up the RB if he releases to the field but he does not. This would of went for a big gain but Burns saves the defense. He whipps the tackle off the edge and pressures Perry into a bad throw that falls incomplete.
Perry, N pass complete to Hightower, B for 7 yards to the UM34, PENALTY UM illegal forward pass declined. 3 8 UM27 3-3-5 4 man rush with FSU playing Cover 3. Perry feels some Phantom pressure here, gets happy feet and throws to a curl route off a bad platform. Samuels is an underneath defender here a does not do a great job matching the route but the bad throw from Perry keeps the ball in front of the chains and the defense forces another punt.
Spicer, J punt 46 yards to the FS20, Matthews, D return 44 yards to the UM36 (Smith, M). 4 1 UM34
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 9 yards, 0:50 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 01:32 on H25
Perry, N pass incomplete to Cager, L, dropped pass. 1 10 UM25 3-3-5 More Cover 3 from FSU and Miami throws an out route vs bail technique from the corner. It's a good call but Perry's throw is low and behind the WR and he is unable to make the catch.
Perry, N pass complete to Cager, L for 20 yards to the UM45, 1ST DOWN UM, out-of-bounds. 2 10 UM25 3-3-5 Cover 2 and Miami runs a smah concept to the field. Taylor is good width but not enough depth in his flat drop, especially becuase he does not have the length to recover. Perry squeezes the ball into the weak spot of the coverage and Miami makes a great catch.
Perry, N pass complete to Homer, T for 7 yards to the FS48 (Taylor, L;Nasirildeen, H). 1 10 UM45 3-3-5 Cover 2 again and Miami calls a RB screen. FSU is a little slow to recognize it but once they do, they do a good job in the open field of using leverage, taking on blockers (especially Woodbey) and running to the ball to minimize the gain.
Timeout Miami (FL), clock 00:51. 2 3 FS48
Perry, N pass incomplete to Harley, M. 2 3 FS48 3-3-5 FSU rushes 3, plays 2-man and spies Perry with Brooks and Warner. The coverage is good downfield and Burns is able to generate some quick pressure to force Perry off his spot and make him get rid of the ball out of bounds.
Perry, N pass incomplete to Homer, T. 3 3 FS48 3-3-5 Same coverage from FSU but this time Miami releases the back so Brooks has to take him. He beats Brooks on an option route and despite Perry having time to throw, he misses it.
Timeout Miami (FL), clock 00:41. 4 3 FS48
Perry, N pass incomplete to Wiggins, D (Meyers, K). 4 3 FS48 3-3-5 Same coverage from FSU for third play in a row and this time Miami tries to throw a slant to the boundary vs. press man from Meyers. Solid coverage from Meyers at the line. He does get his hips opened a little early but fights to get hands on and slow the WR as the WR attempts to cross his face. Meyers does a good job of recovering and the throw from Perry is a little too far in front. Miami has an offensive lineman at least 7 yards downfield but it goes uncalled.
Drive Summary: 6 Plays, 27 yards, 0:56 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 14:03 on H40
Perry, N sacked for loss of 5 yards to the UM35 (Burns, B), fumble by Perry, N recovered by UM Perry, N at UM35 (Burns, B). 1 10 UM40 4-3 Play action roll out from Miami vs. quarters from FSU. They run a switch concept to the top but FSU plays it well. Burns does an outstanding job in the open field to contain Perry and then bring him down.
Homer, T rush for no gain to the UM35. 2 15 UM35 4-3 Cover 1 from FSU and Miami runs a zone read. Burns plays the QB to force the give while Jones and Christmas dominate the interior offensive line for Miami.
Perry, N sacked for loss of 8 yards to the UM27 (Wilson, M). 3 15 UM35 3-3-5 Tight camera angle means we can't see what is going on downfield. But this play is all about Marvin Wilson. FSU only rushes four and he splits a double team and shows excellent burst to close and finish for the sack.
Spicer, J punt 47 yards to the FS26, Matthews, D return 74 yards to the UM0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 11:52. 4 23 UM27
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, -13 yards, 2:11 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 11:52 on H28
Perry, N rush for 11 yards to the UM39, 1ST DOWN UM (Thomas, A). 1 10 UM28 4-3 Play action with max protection and Miami sends 3 WR's on deep routes with FSU playing quarters. It's covered well downfield but Perry finds a small lane to step into and run. Adonis Thomas is slow to react and unable to close quick enough to minimize the gain.
Homer, T rush for 6 yards to the UM45 (Samuels, S). 1 10 UM39 4-3 Well designed lead draw play from Miami into the strong A gap. The pass sets from the OL cause hesitation from the LB's and the lead by the fullback creates an extra gap inside. Good job by Samuels and Westbrook to come up and support.
Perry, N pass complete to Gray, T for 12 yards to the FS43, 1ST DOWN UM (Samuel, A). 2 4 UM45 4-3 Same formation from Miami but this time they play action and hit the fullback in the flat. It's a well timed call as FSU is rolling weak and spinning the field safety to the MOF. Brooks is in at star and just does a poor job with his eyes here. Gets caught up in the fake and is late to his pass drop in the flats.
Homer, T rush for loss of 3 yards to the FS46 (Kaindoh, J;Wilson, M). 1 10 FS43 4-3 Miami comes back to the ISO and DJack has seen this one too many times. He triggers into the A gap and blows up the fullback. He is unable to finish the tackle but it delays the RB enough as Westbrook and Wilson rally to the ball.
Homer, T rush for loss of 3 yards to the FS49 (Christmas, D). 2 13 FS46 4-3 Outside zone to the boundary. Excellent play from the FSU DL. JRob sets the edge while Christmas and Jones beat their repsecitves reach blocks to get penetration and make the play as the RB cuts back.
Homer, T rush for 4 yards to the FS45 (Christmas, D). 3 16 FS49 3-3-5 Lead draw on third and long. Good awareness by the FSU front 7 to rush with their eyes up, find the ball, and limit the gain.
Spicer, J punt 41 yards to the FS4, Matthews, D return 7 yards to the FS11 (McCloud, Z). 4 12 FS45
Drive Summary: 6 Plays, 27 yards, 3:41 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 06:42 on V20
Dallas, D rush for 1 yard to the FS19 (Nasirildeen, H;Robinson, J). 1 10 FS20 4-3 Zone read to the boundary. Christmas is playing the 2i here and does a great job holding ground vs. the double team. This allows JRob to play the QB, force the give and then use his athleticsm to close the spacd and make the tackleonce the ball is handed off.
Dallas, D pass incomplete to Wiggins, D, PENALTY FS pass interference (Meyers, K) 15 yards to the FS4, 1ST DOWN UM, NO PLAY. 2 9 FS19 4-3 Miami runs a halfback pass. Meyers is in man coverage on the WR so he is not fooled. He's in great position and in-phase but he does not look back for the ball. Instead he panics with his back to the ball and gets the penalty.
Perry, N rush for 1 yard to the FS3 (Nasirildeen, H). 1 G FS04 4-3 Miami goes empty and runs QB power. FSU has a run blitzed called here and Hamsah does a great job closing into the middle of the box and stopping Perry in his tracks.
Perry, N pass incomplete to Wiggins, D. 2 G FS03 4-3 Cover 0 from FSU and Miami throws a jump ball to the back of the endzone to the #3 WR in trips. Meyers plays good technique initially here as he stays patient and square at the LOS and remains in phase as the ball is thrown too far out of reach for the WR.
Perry, N pass incomplete to Cager, L (Samuel, A). 3 G FS03 4-3 Cover 0 again and this time Miami throws a jump ball to the outside where there is a size mismatch in their favor. Samuel gets beat initiallyand Cager fades on his route instead of attacking the ball. As a result, Samuel is able to recover and plays through the hands of the WR to knock the ball away.
Perry, N pass complete to Cager, L for 3 yards to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 04:53. 4 G FS03 4-3 Same look from both teams and Miami goes back to Cager. This time he holds his grounds and posts up Samuel so he can better use his size to go up and get the ball. Not going to win that matchup very often if you're FSU.
Baxa, B kick attempt good. 1 G FS03
PENALTY FS personal foul 15 yards to the 50 yardline. 1 G UM35
Drive Summary: 5 Plays, 20 yards, 1:49 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 04:17 on V17
Perry, N pass complete to Thomas, J for 17 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN UM, TOUCHDOWN, clock 04:11. 1 10 FS17 4-3 Cover 1 and Westbrook is playing off-man vs the slot (Thomas) to the field. Thomas runs a fade and does a great job setting up Westbrook inside before stemming back out. Good recovery by Westbrook but a subtle push off gives Thomas just enough space to make the catch on an excellent throw from Perry.
Baxa, B kick attempt good. 1 G FS03
Current Score: 27 21
Drive Summary: 1 Plays, 17 yards, 0:06 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 01:14 on H31
Dallas, D rush for loss of 2 yards to the UM29 (Jackson, D). 1 10 UM31 4-3 Miami runs outside zone and no one blocks DJack. He does a good job making them pay and fills the A gap to get a TFL.
Perry, N sacked for loss of 7 yards to the UM22 (Jones, F). 2 12 UM29 4-3 Quarters from FSU and Miami is again trying to run a switch conept to the field. Perry doens't like what he sees initially, heisistates and before he knows it Jones is bringing him down for the sack. Jones just whipped the guard 1-on-1.
Start of 4th quarter, clock 15:00. 3 19 UM22
PENALTY UM false start (Scaife, D) 5 yards to the UM17. 3 19 UM22
Perry, N pass incomplete to Jordan, B (Warner, L). 3 24 UM17 3-3-5 FSU rushes 3 and plays Cover 2 with a spy. Perry gets happy feet again and the pocket and runs himself into the rush but is able to throw it away before being sakced.
Spicer, J punt 36 yards to the FS47, out-of-bounds. 4 24 UM17
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, -14 yards, 1:28 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 12:42 on H27
Perry, N pass incomplete to Thomas, J, QB hurry by Jones, F. 1 10 UM27 4-3 Miami comes back to the switch concept to the field. Thomas is very open on the corner route vs. Samuels but the throw is off the mark big time. Credit Fred Jones for again beating the LG and pressuring Perry as he is getting rid of the ball.
Perry, N pass incomplete to 14 (Burns, B). 2 10 UM27 4-3 Well timed and well disguised call from FSU here. They show quarters presnap and then bring pressure from the boundary and roll to Cover 3. The boundary pressure let's Burns stem outside to the field and get in the passing lane to deflect the ball and Perry tries to hit a bubble route. Woodbey was in great position to defend this even if the ball is not deflected.
Perry, N pass complete to Thomas, J for 32 yards to the FS41, 1ST DOWN UM (Samuels, S). 3 10 UM27 3-3-5 FSU plays 2-man under with a spy. Woodbey is man on Thomas and has help over top and to the outside. Woodbey is unable to run with Thomas and Perry throws a dime over the middle that is over Woodbey and in between the two deep safeties.
Perry, N pass complete to Jordan, B for 41 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN UM, TOUCHDOWN, clock 11:52. 1 10 FS41 4-3 FSU shows Cover 1 presnap and Perry knows he has a mismatch in his favor with Brooks guarding their athletic TE in Jordan. After the snap, Perry looks off the MOF safety and throws another dime to Jordan on the fade from the slot. Good job by Miami to see the mismatch and exploit it.
Baxa, B kick attempt good. 1 G FS03
Drive Summary: 4 Plays, 73 yards, 0:50 used.
Miami (FL) drive start at 10:41 on H44
Homer, T rush for 3 yards to the UM47 (Wilson, M). 1 10 UM44 4-3 Miami goes 21 personnel and runs ISO. Christmas gets penetration from the backside but is held. Wilson gets reached initially but keeps fighting and wins on second effort to bring down the RB. This is play where you hope to see Woodbey continue to improve. He gets a good key and triggers to fit the fullback with his outside pad. He needs to be able to stay square, shed the block and finish the play.
Homer, T rush for 5 yards to the FS48 (Christmas, D). 2 7 UM47 4-3 Zone read play here with Miami reading the backside 3 tech and they correctly give the ball. Burns is to the play side and gives up too much ground vs. the base block from the LT. Christmas is the 2i to the playside and does a great job beating the reach block and working down the LOS to make the tackle.

The work of these three players combined with a fast flow by Djack in the middle results a in big 3rd down stop.

Gray, T rush for 2 yards to the FS14, 1ST DOWN UM (Robinson, J). 4 1 FS16 Heavy Good play design on the full back dive by Miami. They have everyone down block on the left side and JRob does not get a good enough squeeze to close the space created.
