I have been putting in some long hours at the mine, but I have come to the surface with a little pocket gold for you as your reward for making it through an interminable week without FSU Hoops followed up by a rude comeuppance on the road by the ghost of Scotty Wood past. I'm not interested in rehashing that game individually because frankly regardless of category my analysis will look something like "When you hit a ton of 3's across all categories, you win." Let's remind ourselves that this is just one game in a single season.

I tried to help out by making these tables a little larger and scrollable and separating each possession category. Additionally, I've added two possession % rows and shot-type% of total flag points (flags being each column category). As before, we are tracking possessions and grouping them by how they start: After an Opponent Score, Defensive Rebound, or a Turnover. Within those categories, we classify them by their time to first shot or turnover (10 seconds and under is transition, 10-20 seconds is mid-clock, and 20+ seconds is late clock. In the event of an offensive rebound, we give one view that combines all the offensive rebounds from the 3 possession categories as a separate category and one without that distinction where offensive rebound possessions fit back into their respective possession type categories along with their transition category (vast majority being mid-clock or late clock shots). This is undoubtedly imperfect, but when I figure out the best way to re-categorize, I'll update accordingly. I will soon split deadball turnovers and steals, but I'm aware of the limitation and I'll get it figured out shortly. Data included for all games except Southern Miss, Kennesaw State, and The Citadel

Let's first take a look at the offensive possessions by transition intervals, which tells us that FSU managed to get 33% of their points (48.2% at the rim) on their first shot attempt (or FTs) within 10 seconds of the start of the possession, good for 0.979 points per possession (PPP). Note that FSU turned it over on 16.1% of those transition possessions, which include all of those passes lost out of bounds bringing the ball up the court or the ever painful defensive rebound + immediate called travel. All those missed alley-oops. Oh, the memories we could have had. While it's easy to harp that these things are preventable, and to some extent that is true, they have cleaned it up to bring that number lower.

Outside of transition, this Seminoles squad still gets at least a third of their points at the rim, but there is a tendency to settle for significantly more 2 point jumpers, where they have shot 36.3%. I can understand some of this tendency with the way this year has been officiated with the block/charge calls, but this feels more like the 'solo ball' after offense got bogged down through it's first cycle and someone tried to go get a basket at the rim, couldn't, and settled. The only market inefficiency that might exist is one the Noles have not been as quick to attempt: stopping and popping just outside the paint with an entrenched rim defender not in position to affect the shot because they're positioning for the charge. I think the offense may rely on the refs too much to make a call when shots aren't falling at the rack.

I will say this, Florida State consistently attempts a lot of 3's across all phases of a possession. The commitment from the players and coaches is a good thing for any team. My eyes tell me this team is composed of better pure shooters than this average and I think the Noles are capable of being more efficient if the players can get a better handle on their shot decisions/non-decisions.

Speaking of making better shot decisions, opposing teams have taken advantage of the Noles from the perimeter early in possessions, averaging 40.4% on the deep ball against defenders lined up a little too deep inside the arc or caught with their eyes elsewhere at the wrong time. Eye Discipline! (lol Jimbo wasn't wrong about everything)

Fun Fact: The difference in possessions for this category is because we scored more than our opponents over the course of the year.

Despite an 80 possession difference, there is only a one point difference scored between FSU and their opponents after the other has scored. Recall, there are two ways to look at this, on the left hand side is how the Noles respond when scoring pressure is applied to them vs. the Opponents side, which measures how well the Noles fared on defense after applying scoring pressure on the opposing team. These Seminoles may not take advantage of every opportunity presented to them, but they do not take kindly to being scored upon with an effective field goal% of 57.1% in transition, buoyed by 18 3's including 9 by Angola. However, that transition 3 is pretty hard for everyone to defend, where Florida State allowed opponents to shoot 57.1% from 3.

Fouling on a transition possession after Florida State has just scored will often mean they're fouling one of the opponents lead guards and better free throw shooters, partially explaining the raised FT%. Once you move beyond the first interval though, the Florida State defense is pretty effective once they are dug into the possession, allowing just about 35% from 3 and a paltry 43% at the rim in the mid-clock time frame. Another encouraging note on the defense, is the high TO% for the opposing teams, averaging 17.8% on all initial FGA or in other words, after FSU scores, 17.6% of the time the other team does not even get a shot up. When the opposing team does get a quick shot up, they're shooting over 50% from the field, but if they don't get the quick shot up, they shoot under 39% from the field.

If an FSU guard can get his hands on a defensive rebound, they're flying down the court to catch the other team's defense out of position. This is a smart call to take advantage of this consistent opportunity and the only major area you can consistently rely on to control the pace yourself, since deadball defensive rebounds are not nearly as common as deadball turnovers. The number of guys Florida State has on the roster that can take the ball coast to coast convincingly is higher than I can can ever remember, and they push the pace on getting quick shots with over half of their defensive rebound possessions being classified as transition possessions.

The issues with the implementation of the strategy is that these guys have been a little careless with the ball, and they have not been able to get their 3's to fall. This is part of why it feels like this team hasn't been able to distance themselves from their opponents, they're shooting worse from deep right after they got some form of a stop (a missed FT or FG) .

I would harp on free throws but I understand that the hack a Koumadje strategy influences the defensive rebounding transition FTs. The FSU defense is consistent over most phases of the possessions after missing a shot, but there is somewhat of a tendency to send guys to the line. Few nits to pick on that end.

If FSU turns you over, they are going right to the rack and they're getting buckets. 72% as a team at the rim and the source of 61% of their points off turnovers. We could talk about FSU using a trailer in transition a little but frankly, I have seen some phenomenal finishes this year at the rim. While probably not the most optimal distribution between two's and 3's as far as creating the most points you could in a transition possession, I have also seen FSU's shooters. They're not bad shooters by any means, but few are the type you want stopping and pulling up for a transition 3 when they have demonstrated problems maintaining balance and form on less challenging pull ups. I would also note they have had some excellent quick shots from out of bounds plays when the ball is retained by FSU during a turnover possession.

I think the story here is the defense though. I've looked at a ton of FSU play by play data and I've watched most games at least twice. This team forces turnovers after they just turned the ball over themselves nearly 19% of the time (whether makeup call related or not). If you don't go and get your points on the fast break, FSU is a good bet to slow you down.

This is an interesting table to me. If you've wondered why FSU's offensive Points per Possession seemed low, it's because the offensive rebounding numbers have been taken out, so the possession type categories have all the missed shots included as possessions. FSU retained 303 offensive rebounds, with exceptional efficiency numbers. This is an area FSU tends to shine in for several reasons:

  • they get a lot of offensive rebounds ( almost 17% of possessions have an offensive rebound)
  • they finish at the rim (61.3%)
  • they get high quality looks from 3 and convert them (30 of 55, 54.5%)
  • after an opponent scores (~45% of all possessions), they retain missed shots for an extra 9% of all possessions, or roughly 20% of the time after an opponent scores, they get an extra shot at scoring again prior to their opponent getting another shot
  • They caused the opposing team to shoot under 50% at the rim, and thoughts and prayers kept their opponents 3pt shooting low.

The Noles have lost to two teams that hit three 3 pointers off offensive rebounds, though both were also on the road. NC State actually took more 3 point attempts than rim attempts after offensive boards.

There is so much that is still to be delved into, but I gotta go, my break is over. I gotta get back in this mine as well as find some more time to polish these nuggets.
