Update: Mike Martin has described Sands’ issue as shoulder tightness, and 11 expects the latter back for his next start, against Boston College.
A single, error, triple, hit by pitch, another single, another error and the score was 3-0 Duke just 10 pitches into the game. Despite a poor first inning that saw Cole Sands labor and throw 29 pitches he bounced back after that. In innings two through four the junior threw just 30 pitches, retiring the side in order each inning.
After a leadoff double in the 5th though it was evident that Sands was injured and his day was done. He was relived by former Sunday starter Austin Pollack. Updates on Sands’ status will come in the postgame interview.
