With the 2018 MLB Draft out of the way, and signings/commitments being made, it’s time to start looking at the high school class of 2019 commits.

Over the weekend, we learned that this would be the first group of newcomers to be led by a new head coach at FSU. Skipper Mike Martin will retire after the 2019 season and thus these are the athletes helping usher in a new era in Tallahassee.

Seven of the soon-to-be Seminoles showcased their talent over the weekend at Tropicana Field in Saint Petersburg, FL during the 2018 Perfect Game National Showcase.

Here’s a look at their metrics - Scout Notes courtesy of Perfect Game:

3B Caleb Cali (Montverde Academy)

  • 1.78 sec. - 10-yard split
  • 7.02 sec. - 60-yard time
  • 87 mph - INF Velo
  • 89 mph - Exit Velo

OF Grant McCray (Lakewood Ranch HS)

  • 1.68 sec. - 10 yard split
  • 6.57 sec. - 60-yard time
  • 92 mph - OF Velo
  • 88 mph - Exit Velo

SCOUT NOTES: Grant McCray (2019 OF, Lakewood Ranch, FL) went with pitches nicely spraying balls to where they were pitched. McCray hit the ball hard to all fields with barrel skills and letting the ball travel nicely. Put the barrel to the baseball on multiple occasions in the game. McCray knocked a pair of base hits in the game striking each of the hard including a double to the opposite field.

SS Josiah Miller (Lincoln HS - Tallahassee, FL)

  • 1.66 sec. - 10-yard split
  • 6.75 sec. - 60-yard time
  • 87 mph - INF Velo
  • 97 mph - Exit Velo

1B/RHP Dylan Simmons (Trinity Christian - Jacksonville, FL)

  • 89 mph - Fastball Velo
  • 1.8 sec. - 10-yard split
  • 7.25 sec. - 60-yard time
  • 84 mph - INF Velo
  • 95 mph - Exit Velo

SCOUT NOTES: Dylan Simmons (2019 1B, Jacksonville, FL) put the Gold squad on the scoreboard in the second inning with a hard single through the right side, getting extended on a 94 mph fastball while finding the barrel.

RHP/INF Brandon Walker (North Florida Christian - Tallahassee, FL)

  • 96 mph - Exit Velo
  • Did not throw in any workouts

SCOUT NOTES: Brandon Walker (2019 RHP, Tallahassee, FL) has easy bat speed and strength present in his swing. The Florida State commit had a nice showing in batting practice with several balls that left his bat in a hurry.

RHP Tyler Owens (Trinity Catholic - Ocala, FL)

  • 96 mph - Fastball Velo

SCOUT NOTES: Tyler Owens (2019 RHP, Ocala, FL) came out pumping the fastball as he bumped as high as 96 mph early in his first inning and managed to blow it past several hitters. He’s a strongly built Florida State commit who generated plane to his fastball and spun a slider in the low-80s.

LHP Ryan Pettys (J.R. Arnold HS - Panama City Beach, FL)

  • 89 mph - Fastball Velo

In addition to the seven commits that competed over the weekend, FSU has several others that have elected to attend the University after graduation.
