According to multiple reports FSU Associate Head Coach/Pitching Coach Mike Bell will become the new University of Pittsburgh head baseball coach. A former Seminole, Bell arrived in 2012 after previous stops at Tennessee and Oklahoma.
Bell’s a rarity in that he played and coached in a College World Series for Florida State; accomplishing the feat as a player in 1994 & 1995 and as a coach in 2012 & 2017.
Known as a good recruiter and developer of talent, Bell coached eight All-Americans and produced 25 draft picks during his seven year tenure at FSU, most notably former first round pick Luke Weaver of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Although somewhat successful, Bell’s tenure has to be qualified a disappointment. The beginning of his FSU coaching career showed great promise, but ended up regressing each year.
Where FSU goes from here to replace him will be hard to pinpoint considering the very uncertain future of the program with FSU announcing Mike Martin’s final season & imminent coaching search just last month.
