Former McDonald's All-American and 5* recruit Izabela Nicoletti will miss her freshman year due to a season ending injury sustained in practice on Wednesday. Nicoletti will redshirt and will have four years of eligibility remaining.
There is no good way to spin this news. This is simply devastating for next year's team. Although head coach Sue Semrau had not officially named a starter, Nicoletti was set to take the reins at point guard from last year's starter AJ Alix who graduated.
Nicoletti's presence would have given FSU a first class talent at the point. It would also allow other players to play more in their natural positions. For example, Nausia Woolfolk would have been able to play more on the wing instead of having to fill in at point guard like she had to do last year. Now that luxury is gone as Woolfolk and redshirt freshman Sayawni Lassiter will likely have to split the point guard duties.
Nicoletti's loss means that FSU is now down to just 10 scholarship players. This could create depth issues similar to last year when the Seminoles only had 9 scholarship players. Obviously the Noles cannot afford to have any more preseason injuries.
In the coming weeks and months we will discuss in more detail the prospects for FSU in the coming season and how this unfortunate injury damages those prospects.
