FSU football film review: Offense vs. Virginia Tech

The good, the bad, and the ugly from Florida State’s inept offensive performance.

This poor guy in the student section waited all game to see a Florida State touchdown.

Film Review is back! Each week we take a play-by-play look at how the offense and defense played vs. their previous opponent.

Florida State fans had high expectations for the new, fast-paced, smash-mouth spread offense under Willie Taggart, but it fell flat on its face Monday night to open the season vs. Virginia Tech. After going back and watching the film, we have some takeaways on what exactly went wrong, along with a detailed review from each play.

Here are some takeaways, followed by all of the plays broken down.

The QB must start making the right read on zone reads and RPOs.

Virginia Tech loaded the box to stop the run. There were 8 or 9 defenders near the line of scrimmage very often, but FSU didn’t effectively counter this. The coaching staff tried to call various RPO and Zone Read plays, but Deondre Francois clearly had a hard time making the correct reads. On zone reads he didn’t show the ability and/or the desire to pull the ball when the defensive end crashed to take the running back. However, he had no problem sacrificing his body as a blocker, so this may be a comfort thing, as opposed to a willingness to do so.

FSU also has RPOs within the offense requiring Francois to throw the ball to the perimeter if numbers dictate. He didn’t do this enough when FSU had clear numbers on the outside. This really hurt the offense and often times made it seem FSU had a bad play called. As crazy as it sounds, FSU needed more bubble screens, not fewer.

As we know, VT has an excellent defensive coordinator in Bud Foster, and the Hokies presented many different looks in the box. There’s no doubt this contributed to Francois’ confusion with some of his decision-making. It’s not surprising either due to Francois’ limited reps in this new offense, as some of these elements were completely foreign in the prior offense, and he missed spring ball.

Francois should be expected to improve his decision-making in this area each week. If he’s unable to, the offense won’t get substantially better.

FSU needs to take more matchups against 1v1 coverage.

With so many VT defenders in the box, this left numerous 1-on-1 matchups to the outside and often times vs. soft coverage. FSU didn’t make the opposing defense pay for this, either. It’s unclear why they didn’t feel comfortable getting the ball to their bigger wide receivers in these matchups. With Francois’ ineffectiveness in the read and RPO plays, this’ll be something FSU needs to look for as the season progresses.

This is an area where the coaching emphasis can be greater. If the staff knows the QB is struggling in making the right choices, it needs to have him make some of the choices pre-snap and just take some 1-on-1 matchups.

Francois can’t force the ball to Noonie Murray and must handle adversity better.

As a passer, Francois started the game off fine, other than the early miss to D.J. Matthews over the middle. As the game went on, particularly after the Keith Gavin drop in the end zone, the FSU signal-caller played worse. He began to press and look for big plays rather than take what was there and seemed to force the ball to his favorite target, Noonie Murray. You’ll find several examples of this in the play breakdown below.

The offensive line clearly did not play well.

There might be a silver lining we can find.

First, here are some of the issues:

  • We saw plays where lineman stepped the wrong direction, or turned a guy loose from a missed assignment in the run-game.
  • A few times they were unsure of their assignment due to movement and stems from the VT front.
  • They blew a few pass protections, but much of that was excellent disguise by VT and came at a time when FSU was playing from behind, or Francois simply held the ball too long.
  • The penalties were untimely and hurt the offense.

Most of these are mistakes you’d expect with a team installing a new scheme against a very good defensive coordinator. And Virginia Tech’s defensive line is by far the Hokies’ best unit. FSU’s offensive line is somewhat limited physically, but most of the errors we saw are fixable for a group that we didn’t have high expectations for to begin the season. It’ll need to coach better to fix some of the mental errors because the group won’t get physically better during the season.

If Landon Dickerson remains sidelined with his ankle injury when it comes time to play better defenses again, this group could be overwhelmed physically.

Tight end was a bright spot for the offense.

Tre McKitty caught the ball well and did a nice job blocking, as well. This is encouraging.

Cam Akers didn’t have his best game.

Cam Akers seemed to press some and was trying a bit too hard to make a play on his own, rather than trusting the play and allowing his blocks to set up. This can happen with the amount of penetration VT was getting, but he’ll need to learn to stay patient. Jacques Patrick did a better job of this and continues to show improvement using his size to run with power. Both were set up at times to run into a doomed situation by incorrect decisions by Francois.

It was obviously a disappointing night for the wide receivers, as well.

The most disappointing aspect of the wide receivers’ poor performance was their blocking on the perimeter. They missed assignments at times and didn’t show the necessary effort to consistently win their matchups in order to create lanes for screens. Effort should never be a problem, regardless of scheme. FSU also didn’t do a great job personnel-wise in helping them with this. Some players within this position group are better suited to catch the bubble than block and vice-versa.

Florida State drive start at 10:34 on H25
Deondre Francois at QB for Florida State. 1 10 FS25
Cam Akers rush up middle for 2 yards to the FS27 (Dylan Rivers;Rayshard Ashby), clock 10:06. 1 10 FS25 11 Inside Zone off jet action. Akers find a little space on the cutback but VT has 9 defenders within 6 yards of the line of scrimmage and brings pressure from the field. FSU can't block all of them.
Cam Akers rush right for loss of 3 yards to the FS24 (Khalil Ladler), clock 09:48. 2 8 FS27 11 FSU aligns 4 players outside and throws a screen to Akers. Murray cannot secure the block on the corner who is able to blow up the play. This is a read for Francois. He sould see they have numbers in the box to run and he should follow the pulling guard to his left.
Previous play was a backwards lateral to #3.
Deondre Francois crossing pass complete to Keith Gavin for 24 yards to the FS48, 1ST DOWN FS (Reggie Floyd), clock 09:18. 3 11 FS24 10 Nice pass concept from FSU here out of trips to convert vs quarters coverage. They run off the safety with the #3 WR and run the #1 WR on a dig route past the chains. Good ball placement by Francois over the arms of the linebacker.
PENALTY FS false start (Landon Dickerson) 5 yards to the FS43, clock 09:07. 1 10 FS48
Deondre Francois SH pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for loss of 8 yards to the FS35, fumble forced by Rayshard Ashby, fumble by Nyqwan Murray recovered by VT Khalil Ladler at FS35. 1 15 FS43 11 Jet sweep to the field. VT has 9 defenders in the box again and their second level defenders get a quick read on the handoff. FSU does not have the numbers to get hat on hat. VT defenders meet Murray 5 yards deep in the backfield before he has a chance to turn upfield. He does not keep the ball secure while trying to make them miss.
Drive Summary: 4 Plays, 10 yards, 1:41 used.
Florida State drive start at 07:52 on H25
Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Jacques Patrick for loss of 1 yard to the FS24 (Divine Deablo), clock 07:32. 1 10 FS25 11 FSU aligns in trips to the field, motions Patrick wide behind them and throws the ball to him in the flat. FSU has good numbers but DJ Matthews is unable to block the safety who probably outweight him by at least 50 pounds.
Deondre Francois crossing pass incomplete to D.J. Matthews (Khalil Ladler), clock 07:04. 2 11 FS24 11 Play action gives Francois time and a nice pocket to throw from as Matthews runs a deep in route at 15 yards. He has the safety beat but the ball is thrown too far behind and allows the safety to recover and break up the pass.
Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Ontaria Wilson for 12 yards to the FS36, 1ST DOWN FS (Bryce Watts). 3 11 FS24 11 2x2 spread formation and FSU runs 4 stop routes at the chains. Francois' throw is on time to Wilson who makes a nice adjustment on a ball that is low.
Jacques Patrick rush over left end for 13 yards to the FS49 (Khalil Ladler), PENALTY FS illegal formation (Nyqwan Murray) 5 yards to the FS31, NO PLAY, clock 06:32. 1 10 FS36 11 Unbalanced with a TE in-line and three WRs bunched outside the numbers near the sideline. This is an Inside Zone RPO where Francois has the option to give or throw to a WR screen outside based on the numbers in the box. Taggart really likes this play in short yardage situation. Francois gives the ball when he should of kept as the DE comes crashing down. McKitty's block is so good however, that Patrick still has a ton of room to cutback and take the lane that was there fro Francois. I think the formation was legal and this was an incorrect penalty by the referees.
Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Keith Gavin for 9 yards to the FS40, out-of-bounds (Reggie Floyd), clock 06:10. 1 15 FS31 11 Inside Zone-Bubble RPO. Francois makes the correct read to throw and pull the bubble.
Jacques Patrick rush up middle for no gain to the FS40 (Khalil Ladler), PENALTY FS holding (Derrick Kelly) 10 yards to the FS30, NO PLAY, clock 05:52. 2 6 FS40 11 Same play. This times Francois makes the wrong decision and gives the ball despite the defesnive lineman sqeezing down and taking it away.
Cam Akers rush left for no gain to the FS30, out-of-bounds (Reggie Floyd), clock 05:35. 2 16 FS30 11 G-lead-bubble RPO. G-lead means the frontside guard is pulling to lead for the RB on a sweep. Francois again makes the wrong read and gives the ball. FSU has numbers on the perimeter and he should pull and throw the bubble.
Cam Akers rush over left end for 11 yards to the FS41 (Houshun Gaines), clock 04:45. 3 16 FS30 10 Zone Read out of trips. Correct decision by Francois to give. VT is slanting to the frontside which helps Arnold and Dickerson effectively wash their respective defenders and create a decent cutback lane for Akers.
Logan Tyler punt 54 yards to the VT5, downed. 4 5 FS41
Drive Summary: 6 Plays, 16 yards, 3:29 used.
Florida State drive start at 01:07 on H21
Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Khalan Laborn for 37 yards to the VT42, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Divine Deablo), clock 00:42. 1 10 FS21 11 Empty FSU motions to get 3 WR's to the boundary and runs a slip screen to that side. Gavin misses his block initally but shows good hustle to stay with it and Labron does the rest, making multiple players miss on his way to a big gain.
Cam Akers at QB for Florida State. 1 10 VT42
Cam Akers rush quarterback draw for loss of 2 yards to the VT44 (Trevon Hill), clock 00:19. 1 10 VT42 11 Wildcat Power Read-style play to the boundary where Akers reads the frontside C-gap defender to give on the sweep or follow the pulling lineman. Something about this play does not look right as Akers pulls the ball and appears to initially step the wrong direction. This allows the backside DE time to make the play. Akers should have given the ball to Harrison on the sweep as FSU had numbers on the edge.
Deondre Francois at QB for Florida State. 2 12 VT44
Deondre Francois crossing pass complete to Keith Gavin for 21 yards to the VT23, 1ST DOWN FS (Dylan Rivers). 2 12 VT44 11 Empty VT drops 8 in coverage and FSU has a Y-cross concept called the Walt Bell talked about this summer at a coaching clinic. Francois works to his second read in the progression and delivers a nice ball to Gavin on the curl route.
Start of 2nd quarter, clock 15:00. 1 10 VT23
Rain has stopped to start the 2nd quarter.
Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 9 yards to the VT32 (Trevon Hill), clock 14:43. 1 10 VT23 11 Empty FSU comes back to the empty look they used on Labron's big gain. This time they pump the screen and try to sneak the blockers down the field on go routes. Williams steps wide instead of back in his pass set and is beat with speed to his outside. It does not appear there was anything open downfield either.
Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Tre' McKitty for 4 yards to the VT28 (Reggie Floyd), clock 14:17. 2 19 VT32 11 Doubles Inside Zone-Bubble RPO. Correct read by Francois to pull and throw the bubble.
Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Nyqwan Murray, PENALTY VT pass interference (Khalil Ladler) 15 yards to the VT13, 1ST DOWN FS, NO PLAY, clock 14:11. 3 15 VT28 11 Trips 4 Verts. It's 1-on-1 across the board so Francois has his pick of which matchup he likes. He goes with Noonie down the seam. There was some hand fightinng both ways and FSU catches a decent break as DPI is called.
Cam Akers rush left for loss of 5 yards to the VT18 (Ricky Walker), clock 13:47. 1 10 VT13 11 FSU tries to run counter to the boundary off of jet action. VT has 9 in the box again. They also have a 3 tech to the backside. The center or the tackle has to block the 3 tech if you are going to pull a guard from there. No one does and he blows up the play. This is a tough ask of your OL but as it is, it's a missed assignment by either Eberle or Dickerson.
Cam Akers rush over right tackle for 3 yards to the VT15 (Dylan Rivers), clock 13:21. 2 15 VT18 11 Doubles Inside Zone-Bubble RPO. Wrong read by Francois to give the ball. He needs to pull it here and throw the bubble.
Deondre Francois crossing pass incomplete to Keith Gavin, clock 12:51. 3 12 VT15 11 Play action and Francois throws to Gavin who has 1-on-1 on a post route. Great throw by Francois but the ball is dropped in the endzone. Critical drop.
Injured player for VT is #25-Walker. Assisted off the field.
Ricky Aguayo field goal attempt from 32 MISSED - wide left, spot at VT20, clock 12:47. 4 12 VT15
Drive Summary: 9 Plays, 64 yards, 3:20 used.
Florida State drive start at 10:59 on H30
Jacques Patrick rush over right tackle for 3 yards to the FS33 (Dylan Rivers;Ricky Walker), clock 10:38. 1 10 FS30 11 Trips VT has the box loaded up again and FSU runs an Outside Zone Read. Correct decision by Francois to give as the backside blitzes off the edge to force the give. VT is slanting hard to the frontside and gets major penetration to blow up the play. Good effort by Patrick to fight and pick up positive yardage.
Jacques Patrick rush up middle for 3 yards to the FS36 (Dylan Rivers), clock 10:27. 2 7 FS33 11 Unbalanced wide bunch with Inside Zone RPO. Francois should pull the ball and throw the outside screen but he gives. Dickerson blows the DE five yards off the ball to create some space but there's a backer who is unaccounted for.
Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Tre' McKitty for 9 yards to the FS45, 1ST DOWN FS (Reggie Floyd), clock 10:12. 3 4 FS36 11 FSU runs a mesh concept underneath with switch routes (wheel and post) to the field. The wheel route opens up if Francois is more patient in the pocket but he gets a little antsy and bails early. Does do a nice job of keeping his eyes up and finding McKitty late on the drag.
Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Tre' McKitty, clock 09:58. 1 10 FS45 11 This is a play Taggart had much success with at Oregon. Play action, slot receiver occupies the safety on a crossing route and they run McKitty down the seam. I believe McKitty gets too wide on his route and gives up on it because he believes he is covered. Francois throws to him anyway and it's nearly picked.
Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Tamorrion Terry for 7 yards to the VT48 (Bryce Watts), clock 09:39. 2 10 FS45 11 Trips VT corners have surprisingly been playing a lot of off coverage and FSU finally takes advantage on a quick hitch route.
Jacques Patrick rush over right tackle for 17 yards to the VT31, 1ST DOWN FS (Caleb Farley), clock 09:30. 3 3 VT48 11 Unbalanced wide bunch with Inside Zone RPO. Good decision to give an excellent blocks by Dickerson and McKitty on the backside to provide a cutback lane for Patrick.
Injured played for Virginia Tech is #94-Hill. Walks off the field.
Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to D.J. Matthews, clock 09:12. 1 10 VT31 11 FSU has Matthews in the backfield and runs him on a wheel route trying to get him matched up on a linebacker. VT is not fooled and has an extra safety in coverage over top and has Matthews double covered. Francois did have Noonie 1-on-1 over the middle but was looking for Matthews the whole way.
Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for 30 yards to the VT1, 1ST DOWN FS (Reggie Floyd). 2 10 VT31 11 Trips Inside Zone-Bubble RPO and Francois makes the correct decision to throw the bubble vs extremely soft coverage from VT. McKitty gets a really nice block on the perimeter and Noonie makes a few defenders miss on his way to the 1 yard line.
PENALTY FS false start (Landon Dickerson) 5 yards to the VT6, clock 08:54. 1 G VT01
Deondre Francois SH pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for no gain to the VT6 (Rayshard Ashby;TyJuan Garbutt), clock 08:25. 1 G VT06 11 Jet sweep to the boundary vs a 9 man box and the playside overloaded with defenders. Play did not have a chance due to numbers.
Previous play was a shovel pass to wide receiver.
Injured player for VT is #43-Burke. Walks off the field.
Deondre Francois rush over right end for 1 yard to the VT5 (Reggie Floyd), clock 08:00. 2 G VT06 11 Empty QB counter off of jet sweep. VT has a 2i on the backside and Eberle is unable to block back on it. The 2i blows up the play from the start or it might of had a chance otherwise as the pulling linemen have angles and the numbers are there.
Deondre Francois sideline pass incomplete to Tamorrion Terry, QB hurry by Jarrod Hewitt, clock 07:29. 3 G VT05 11 Trips Play action and FSU runs a high-low concept to the trips side. VT drops 8 and there are no windows to throw. Francois needs to step up in the pocket here but instead bails to his left and has nowhere to go before just throwing the ball away.
Ricky Aguayo field goal attempt from 22 GOOD, clock 07:26. 4 G VT05
Current Score: 10 3
Drive Summary: 12 Plays, 65 yards, 3:33 used.
Florida State drive start at 05:18 on H09
Cam Akers rush over right end for 2 yards to the FS11 (Bryce Watts), clock 05:07. 1 10 FS09 11 Zone Read. Believe this is a good decsion by Francois to give the ball. Akers does not stay on his inside zone track and tries to cut this back too soon. He needs to trust his blocking and stay on the inside track and this probably opens up for a better gain.
Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 9 yards to the FS2 (Trevon Hill), PENALTY FS personal foul (Landon Dickerson) 1 yards to the FS1, clock 04:34. 2 8 FS11 11 FSU runs Y-cross again. VT brings a zone pressure from the field while dropping the backside end. The OL busts this big time as Williams gets beat and two other rushers come free. Francois needs better awareness here though to see blitz and get the ball out to his hot receiver. Something he should improve on over time with the new scheme.
3rd and 18. 2 18 FS01
Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Tre' McKitty for 13 yards to the FS14 (Bryce Watts). 3 18 FS01 11 Doubles Inside Zone-Bubble RPO. Correct decision by Francois to throw the bubble.
Logan Tyler punt BLOCKED, recovered by VT Eric Kumah at FS3 (blocked by Chris Cunningham), Eric Kumah for 3 yards to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 03:57. 4 5 FS14
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 5 yards, 1:21 used.
Current Score: 17 3
Florida State drive start at 03:57 on H25
Deondre Francois post pass intercepted by Caleb Farley at the VT34, Caleb Farley return 0 yards to the VT34. 1 10 FS25 11 Doubles Post route vs quarters coverage is an acceptable decision but the throw is poor. Taggart referenced one of Francois' INTs as a play where he could have taken an easier throw underneath and this is probably it. The corner plays a bail technique and is on top of the post the whole time. Ball must be thrown flatter and to the inside to have a chance.
Drive Summary: 1 Plays, 0 yards, 0:07 used.
Florida State drive start at 03:30 on H22
Jacques Patrick rush over left guard for 18 yards to the FS40, 1ST DOWN FS (Emmanuel Belmar), clock 03:15. 1 10 FS22 11 Inside Zone off jet action. Two good initial double teams by Kelly-Eberle and Arnold-Dickerson. Arnold loses his footing but keeps fighting to get a piece of the LB and help Patrick spring. Patrick breaks a few tackles on an impressive run downhill.
Deondre Francois deep pass complete to Tamorrion Terry for 32 yards to the VT28, 1ST DOWN FS (Bryce Watts), clock 03:02. 1 10 FS40 11 4 players aligned in a bunch to the field and FSU pumps the screen and sends 3 WRs on vertical routes. VT has it well covered but Francois chucks up a prayer to one of his big WRs and Terry comes down with it.
Injured player for VT is #43-Burke. Assisted off the field.
Jacques Patrick rush up middle for 2 yards to the VT26 (Dylan Rivers), clock 02:44. 1 10 VT28 11 Trips Inside Zone-Bubble RPO. Francois should throw the bubble here but gives instead.
Deondre Francois screen pass complete to Jacques Patrick for 6 yards to the VT20 (Houshun Gaines), clock 02:16. 2 8 VT26 11 5 man zone pressure by VT and FSU goes playaction and is unable to pick up the blitz. 2 rushers come free and Francois has to leave the pocket immediastely. Good job to keep his eyes up and quickly check it Patrick for a short gain.
Cam Akers rush over left tackle for loss of 1 yard to the VT21 (Reggie Floyd), clock 01:59. 3 2 VT20 11 Unbalanced wide bunch with Inside Zone RPO. Tough to say for sure but this appears like a pull and throw read to the screen at the bunch. Terry runs a deep route rather than blocking though so I don't think everyone was on the same page. Upfront, Eberle makes a big mistake and steps the wrong direction allowing immediate penetration.
Injured players for VT are #25-Walker and #21-Floyd. Both walk off.
Deondre Francois slant pass incomplete to Cam Akers (Houshun Gaines), clock 01:39. 4 3 VT21 11 Doubles Cover 0 from VT. Not a bad call vs this look. Pass to the flat is tipped by the unblocked DE. Akers probably would have had to make the LB miss in order to pick up the first down.
Drive Summary: 6 Plays, 57 yards, 1:51 used.
Florida State drive start at 00:35 on H29
Deondre Francois rush QX for no gain to the FS29, clock 00:18. 1 10 FS29 10 Deep curls out of trips for FSU and VT drops 8. Francios doesn't like what he sees so he takes off but VT is in zone and closes the space quickly.
Deondre Francois crossing pass incomplete to Nyqwan Murray, clock 00:08. 2 10 FS29 10 4 Verts. Has Noonie open over the middle but the throw is behind him.
Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for 19 yards to the FS48, 1ST DOWN FS (Rayshard Ashby). 3 10 FS29 10 Outside Zone-Bubble RPO and Francois hits the bubble with VT in prevent. Noonie would of been smart to get out of bounds with a few seconds left but instead tries to dance and the clock runs out for the half
End of half, clock 00:00. 1 10 FS48
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 19 yards, 0:35 used.
Florida State drive start at 15:00 on H25
Deondre Francois at QB for Florida State. 1 10 FS25
Cam Akers rush left for loss of 5 yards to the FS20 (Divine Deablo), clock 14:45. 1 10 FS25 11 Inside Zone off jet action. Once FSU motions, VT moves 9 in the box and has a run blitz called to the frontside. FSU does not have enough blockers here and VT gets immediate penetration. Akers would help himseelf to cut back on his orignal track rather the outside.
Deondre Francois sideline pass incomplete to Nyqwan Murray, clock 14:20. 2 15 FS20 11 Trips Stick concept to the trips. Terry runs the wrong route on the outside but it doesn't really disrupt the play. Francois should be reading this inside-out and see McKitty open rather than locking on to Murray. The throw is off the mark as well.
Deondre Francois crossing pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for 11 yards to the FS31 (Divine Deablo), clock 13:53. 3 15 FS20 10 FSU comes back to a play they seem to like on 3rd down, Y-cross. VT in quarters coverage and takes away Francois' first option (the cross) but he throws it there anyway and catches a break that it makes it into Murray's hands but he is shorter of the marker. Francois starting to press. He should work through his progression and see the RB in the flat, it's the only thing open.
Logan Tyler punt 38 yards to the VT31, downed. 4 4 FS31
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, 6 yards, 1:28 used.
Florida State drive start at 10:07 on H07
Jacques Patrick rush left for loss of 3 yards to the FS4 (Rayshard Ashby), clock 09:47. 1 10 FS07 11 Unbalanced formation and FSU runs power. The box is loaded with defenders again with single, off-coverage to the trips. Francois should pull this ball and throw the bubble but he makes the wrong decision to hand it off.
Deondre Francois screen pass complete to Jacques Patrick for no gain to the FS4 (Houshun Gaines;Rayshard Ashby), clock 09:19. 2 13 FS04 11 Trips closed, FSU motions Partick on a swing to the trips side and throws it to him. VT scrambling to line up and doesn't have enough defenders on the perimeter. Francois' throw is behind Patrick so he is slowed down while catching the ball. Warren Thompson does not get a good block on the safety either and VT is able to recover.
Deondre Francois sideline pass incomplete to Keyshawn Helton, clock 09:00. 3 13 FS04 11 Trips FSU runs the same play they did to convert on the first 3rd down of the game. This time, VT drops 8 into coverage and there is nowhere to go with the ball. Francois throws late to the flat but it's low and incomplete.
Logan Tyler punt 36 yards to the FS40, out-of-bounds. 4 13 FS04
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, -3 yards, 1:13 used.
Florida State drive start at 06:51 on H12
Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 2 yards to the FS10 (Caleb Farley), clock 06:36. 1 10 FS12 11 Play action and VT blitzes the corner from the boundary. The routes take a while to develop and Francois does not have the time to wait. I believe this is on Akers to step and pick up the CB on the blitz but he does not seem him.
Cam Akers rush over left end for no gain to the FS10 (TyJuan Garbutt;Trevon Hill), clock 05:59. 2 12 FS10 11 This is a Run-Run-Pass option play from FSU. Francois has two reads: first the DE to give or keep. If Francois keeps, then second: the LB to run or throw the bubble. Francois makes the wrong read on the DE and gives the ball and Akers is stopped immediately. If he keeps this ball there's a ton of space to the field.
Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 8 yards to the FS2 (TyJuan Garbutt), clock 05:08. 3 12 FS10 11 Trips FSU goes back to the deep dig concept on third down for the third time. VT drops 8 again and there is no where to go with the ball. Francois has to do a better job of keeping his feet here and not taking an easy sack vs a three man rush.
Logan Tyler punt 35 yards to the FS37, C.J. Carroll return 18 yards to the FS19 (Demarcus Christmas). 4 20 FS02
Drive Summary: 3 Plays, -10 yards, 1:59 used.
Florida State drive start at 00:44 on H01
Jacques Patrick rush up middle for no gain to the FS1 (Houshun Gaines), clock 00:32. 1 10 FS01 12 This appears to be another Zone Read in which Francois reads the DE incorrectly. DE crashes on the RB and Francois gives. Luckliy, Patrick is able to do enough to avoid the initial hit and get out of the endzone.
Sideline warning issued to FSU.
End of Quarter Score: 17 3
Start of 4th quarter, clock 15:00. 2 10 FS01
Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to George Campbell, clock 14:54. 2 10 FS01 11 Fade route to Campbell vs single coverage. Campbell turns his head too early to look for the ball, causing himself to slow down so the ball is out of reach.
Deondre Francois crossing pass complete to Jacques Patrick for 4 yards to the FS5 (Khalil Ladler), clock 14:35. 3 10 FS01 11 Doubles FSU runs 4 stop routes past the first down line. Francois' primary target is covered up and he has to check it down to the RB quick because there's pressure on his right side after Bello gets beat by the DE.
