FSU basketball drops in latest AP, Coaches Polls, NET Rankings

Update: Florida State has dropped to No. 13 in the AP and Coaches Polls. In the NCAA’s hilariously awful NET Rankings, which are updated through Saturday’s games instead of on Monday (because the latter would make too much sense), the ’Noles fell from No. 22 to No. 25, a spot behind the 9-5 Purdue team that FSU beat. NET redemption: in one ranking cycle, UF plummeted from 33rd to 54th.

There was serious carnage among the Top 25 this past week, so the No. 9 Seminoles’ road loss to No. 4 Virginia really may not look so bad to voters. 12-2 Florida State had a 1-1 week that included a 87-76 home win over Winthrop and that conference-opening 65-52 loss vs. the Cavs.

Here are some results from the past week that could affect FSU’s ranking:

• Ahead of the ’Noles, No. 5 Kansas (12-2) fell by 17 at unranked Iowa State, and No. 6 Nevada (14-1) was embarrased at unranked New Mexico by 27. It’ll be interesting to see how much they’re punished for these defeats.
• No. 10 Virginia Tech opened up ACC play 2-0 by beginning conference play with home wins over Notre Dame and Boston College to improve to 13-1. No. 11 Texas Tech, also 13-1, recorded a road victory against West Virginia and defended its home court against Kansas State in its first pair of Big 12 contests. It wouldn’t be surprising for both of these squads to pass FSU.
• No. 12 Auburn didn’t play.
• No. 13 Kentucky, No. 16 Marquette, No. 22 Wisconsin, No. 24 Nebraska, and No. 25 Iowa all dropped a game to an unranked team, which should see them stay put, if not drop in the polls.

Teams not listed basically took care of business against lesser foes or lost to teams ranked above them. We’ll update this when the new polls are released later today.
