FSU basketball in the new AP, Coaches Polls, with KenPom, NET rankings

Another unbeaten week should bode well.

NCAA Basketball: North Florida at Florida State Melina Myers-USA TODAY Sports

Update: As expected, FSU ascended again, climbing from No. 19 to No. 17 in the AP and Coaches Polls.

It was another rather slow holiday-season schedule in college hoops over the past week, as only about half of all ranked teams played more than once. No. 19 Florida State was one of those teams, and the Seminoles took care of business against a pair of directional in-state opponents, North Florida and South Florida.

Top-ranked Kansas fell to No. 18 Villanova, so we’ll once again see a new team at No. 1. It won’t be Kentucky, but keep an eye on how far the No. 6 Wildcats plummet after an 0-2 week vs. Utah and No. 5 Ohio State. Seventh-ranked Maryland fell to Seton Hall and has also now lost two straight. And while No. 9 Virginia beat Stony Brook, the Cavaliers fell at home to South Carolina.

No. 13 Dayton lost at Colorado, And No. 16 Arizona was bettered by St. John’s, so expect FSU to rise in the polls again. Check back, as we’ll update this piece when the polls drop.

In KenPom rankings, the Seminoles dropped a spot, from No. 16 to No. 17. The offense improved nicely, up from 49th a week ago to 41st, while the defense slid from No. 6 to No. 9. The ’Noles rosed in the NCAA’s laughable NET rankings, from 28th to 25th. San Diego State is No. 18 per KenPom— and No. 1 in the NET rankings. Another great disparity involves Liberty, which is 57th according to KenPom and 17th for NET.
