Update: Florida State did fall in each poll. Three spots in the Coaches Poll, from No. 17 to No. 20, but just one place in the AP, from 17th to 18th, thanks to passing defending national champ Virginia.
It was another quiet week in college hoops, with the holiday season seeing just one ranked team in action twice (No. 21 Washington). And with conference play taking center stage soon, most ranked teams played cupcakes.
And the vast majority handled their business. The only top-25 team to lose to an unranked foe were the aforementioned Huskies, who fell to Houston. There were a couple of ranked vs. ranked battles, and the lower-ranked teams won each. No. 19 Kentucky beat No. 3 Louisville, while No. 22 West Virginia bettered No. 2 Ohio State in Columbus.
Those defeats won’t be enough to drop the Buckeyes and Cardinals below No. 17 Florida State, but the Wildcats and Mountaineers are close enough behind the Seminoles that they’ll likely jump the ’Noles, who failed to cover against North Alabama. So despite having won four straight, look for FSU to slide, probably a couple spots. As always, we’ll update this piece when the rankings drop, so be sure to check back.
Florida State’s position in the polls could well continue to mirror its KenPom rank. The Seminoles began last week No. 17 in the AP and Coaches Polls, as well as per KP. Currently, the ’Noles are No. 19. The offense continues to improve, up from 41st to 39th, while the defense again slid, from ninth to 17th. FSU slipped one spot in the NCAA’s NET Rankings, from No. 25 to No. 26.
