FSU basketball rises in AP, Coaches Polls, with KenPom, NET Rankings updates

Winning never sucks.

NCAA Basketball: Georgia Tech at Florida State Melina Myers-USA TODAY Sports

Update: As projected, the Seminoles did get a solid bump and are up to No. 22 in the AP Poll, where North Carolina State went from ranked to not receiving a single vote. The ’Noles have also reappeared in the Coaches Poll, at No. 24.

The No. 25 Florida State basketball team entered this rankings cycle on a three-game ACC winning streak, which is a lot more than most schools can claim. So let’s go through the other programs that could affect FSU’s rank.

The teams ranked 10-15 posted an 8-2 record, with no losses coming against unranked teams, save Kansas, which continued to show how poor it is on the road by losing to the unranked Texas Longhorns in Austin. The No. 11 Jayhawks still have just one true road win on their résumé. KU deserves to drop after a loss at unranked Texas, even after beating No. 16 Texas Tech.

The next bad loss comes from No. 18 Buffalo, which fell short at Bowling Green. The Bulls need penalizing for that kind of slip-up in the MAC. The same can be said for No. 19 LSU, which Florida State defeated earlier this season. The Tigers began the week with a road win vs. Texas A&M, but fell short at home against unranked Arkansas.

After that comes No. 22 Mississippi State. The Bulldogs dropped a game at unranked Alabama before topping Ole Miss in Oxford. Still, MSU should fall a touch.

And then there’s No. 23 NC State. An overtime home loss to No. 3 UVA is one thing. But a home defeat to No. 12 Virginia Tech was quite another— especially when you put up a total of 24 points. The Wolfpack has no place being ranked after that kind of performance. I’m sorry. Can we just take a moment here? 24? 24. Twenty-four. There’s no way that I can type it that makes it believable. Or respectable.

Meanwhile, No. 24 Wisconsin took care of business, winning at Nebraska and defeating No. 21 Maryland at home.

FSU deserves a modest bump in the polls, given the fact that Florida State took care of business with a 10-point win over Georgia Tech. If nothing else, NCSU should be set adrift on an iceberg, at which we all get to chuck rocks. Like really jagged, angry rocks. Because, come on, 24? Also, is there a way to set jagged rocks on fire? Asking for a friend. A friend who likes to hurl flaming stones at overrated basketball teams from Raleigh who embarrass their conference.

Florida State is 28th in the latest KenPom rankings, and 31st in the NCAA’s NET rankings, four spots behind Wofford. Wofford. Wofford. Wofford. If you say it enough, it still doesn’t make sense. I’ve tried.

As always, check back here, as we’ll update this piece when the polls are released. In the meantime, go have some breakfast, and enjoy a Belgian Wofford. I mean Wofford. I mean...forget it.
