FSU basketball rises in the final regular-season AP, Coaches Polls, with NET, KenPom updates

More good news for the ’Noles.

NCAA Basketball: Florida State at Wake Forest Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Update: There it is. As predicted, the Seminoles pass both both Kansas and Purdue and are now No. 12 in the AP Poll. The ’Noles did not move in the Coaches Poll, remaining 13th, a spot behind Purdue.

The final AP and Coaches Polls of the 2018-2019 regular season drop today, and as I’ve typed more than I thought I would before the campaign, No. 14 Florida State (per the AP) should be on the rise once again. With postseason play looming, the Seminoles finished out their 25-6 slate with an undefeated week that included wins vs. No. 15 Virginia Tech and at Wake Forest.

Up ahead of the Seminoles, there were a couple of losses in the top 10, but those came to fellow top-10 teams, so don’t expect much movement there. There were, however, some losses from squads positioned more closely in front of the ’Noles that should facilitate an FSU ascent.

Prior to winning at Northwestern, No. 11 Purdue took a road loss vs. unranked Minnesota— although that’s not too terrible, since the Gophers should be dancing. No. 13 Kansas lost on the road as well (surprise!), to unranked Oklahoma, another tourney team. Florida State should at least pass the Jayhawks, if not the Boilermakers, after dropping a ranked Hokies squad.

And that victory over VT should ensure that no team catches FSU from behind. The only squad ranked 15-25 to top a fellow ranked team was No. 25 UCF, which bettered No. 20 Cincinnati— but then lost at Temple.

The ’Noles were 13th in the Coaches Poll last week, 15th per KenPom through Sunday’s games, and No. 19 in the NET Rankings after Saturday’s contests. Check back throughout the day, as we’ll update this piece as new polls/rankings are released.
