’Noles embarrassed in opening game of series against Louisville.

This one would have felt like it took forever even without the weather delay that merely made Florida State’s blowout loss at Louisville take that much longer. The game was all but over early, as FSU was down 9-0 before recording the first out of the second inning. The No. 22 Seminoles (34-19, 16-12 ACC) went on to drop the opener of the series against the Louisville Cardinals (42-12, 20-8 ACC) by a score of 14-1.

Three Up

  • The Florida State head coach conceded the game when he pulled Drew Parrish in the 2nd and went to Tyler Ahearn, a seldom used and ineffective pitcher. His job was to eat innings and save more effective pitchers for the rest of the series.
  • Parrish threw only 56 pitches and should be fresh to pitch in game one of the ACC Tournament, which starts next week.
  • Seminoles’ pitchers held the Cards scoreless in innings four through six.

Three Down

  • The ’Noles led of the game by striking out, in order. They were facing arguably the best pitcher in the conference but they were severely outmatched and looked lost at the plate most of the game. Thru 7 innings the FSU battery struck out 11 times, only walked twice and 4 hits.
  • Parrish allowed three homeruns in the first and put FSU in a 4-0 hole. The second inning wasn’t any kinder as he allowed two singles, a double and another homerun before being pulled after a 9-0 deficit. It is stating the obvious but if FSU is to have any chance of making the postseason moving forward they need better pitching performances.
  • After the first two innings the Seminoles were down 11-0 and had committed two errors. The first one in the top of the first inning ended up being harmless but it extended the inning and forced Parrish to face more batters and throw more pitches. The next error came from Mendoza in the 2nd inning on an easy play to first with no outs and once again extended Parrish allowing the Cards to build on their lead.
