A series win for the ‘Noles against Pitt at home keeps them right where they started.

FSU (30-16, 16-11) was off during the mid-week but returned to host Pittsburgh. Unfortunately the Seminoles returned Saturday but the series began on Friday. A 10-0 loss had FSU heading into a double header on Saturday in a series they could not lose if they wanted to keep their post season hopes alive. Even though the weather pushed most of the second game and all of the third game to Sunday the ‘Noles persevered and took the series from the Panthers. A light week and a 2-1 record kept FSU from moving up or down in this week’s D1Baseball top 25. The loss dropped Florida State one spot in the RPI from 52 to 53.

Dropped out of the Top 25 Indiana — 19, Arizona State — 22, UC Irvine — 25

  • The big story of the week was Oklahoma State sweeping Oregon State on the road. While the Cowboys did not blow out the Beavers in any of the games they played taking all three games over the weekend was huge, especially since Oklahoma State was just swept by Texas Tech and were not particularly competitive. Both OSUs face tough tasks this coming week as Oregon State hosts rival Oregon and Oklahoma State faces rival Oklahoma.
  • At the bottom of the top 25 two teams replaced the teams they beat over the weekend. Illinois took two of three from Indiana giving up just one run through the first two games but being outscored on the series as they gave up nine in the finale. Iowa had a similar weekend beating UC Irvine 6-3, 1-0 before falling 15-4.
  • The race for the last few national seeds is going to heat up in the next week or so. Georgia bounced back this week sweeping their three game series against Florida giving up just one run each in the final two games. Arkansas seems firmly in place to host but finishes with LSu and Texas A&M while Louisville has Florida State. ECU has the easiest remaining schedule and a top five RPI. The ACC should grab two national seeds unless Louisville or Georgia Tech slip up.

FSU in other polls

  • As expected, beating Pitt was not enough to get FSU ranked in Baseball America’s top 25.

Mike Martin will likely coach his last game at Dick Howser this week as FSU hosts Jacksonville for a double header on Tuesday, heads down to DeLand to face Stetson and then hosts Richmond for a three game weekend tilt.
