Professional scout Mike Metcalf is joining the Florida State baseball staff, Tomahawk Nation can confirm. Metcalf’s hire was originally reported by Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.

New coach Mike Martin Jr. has hired the professional scout he has called a necessity for a modern FSU baseball staff. Metcalf is a veteran professional scout, currently serving as the Southeast Area Supervisor for the San Francisco Giants.

In addition to his pro connections to the Southeast, Metcalf is a Florida native. Metcalf is the son of longtime Sarasota High coach Clyde Metcalf.

The connections, scouting network and scouting knowledge that Metcalf brings can help FSU cast a broader net. Having the knowledge infrastructure of a scout from the big leagues will help FSU recruit earlier and harder, as Martin Jr. indicated in his introductory press conference yesterday.

With Meat having hired his pro scout, one can expect the final of the three paid coaches to be a pitching coach. The most discussed option for final staff member will be 2018 National Pitching Coach of the Year Dave Therneau of Stetson. Therneau is considered to be among the top choices Meat has for the pitching coach job.
