No. 11 Florida State (14-2, 3-2 ACC) was upset tonight in Tallahassee by Georgia Tech (12-3, 3-1 ACC) by a 67-52 score.

Game Recap

The Yellow Jackets got off to a quick start with impressive shooting. Tech was able to build a 14-6 lead with about five minutes left in the first quarter courtesy of a Francesca Pan jumper. The Noles responded with a quick 7-1 run that was capped by a triple from Kourtney Weber to pull within two at 15-13. However GT scored the last four points of the quarter to take a 19-13 lead into the second period.

The two teams mostly traded baskets to begin the second quarter. The Jackets went on a small run at the end of the quarter to take a 28-21 lead but Weber answered with a three to make the score 28-24 going into halftime.

The teams traded baskets to begin the third quarter. GT was able to maintain a three to seven point working margin throughout the quarter. However, Nicki Ekhomu cut the lead to 41-38 with a three and the Seminoles were building a little momentum. The Yellow Jackets had an answer though as Jasmine Carson immediately responded with a triple of her own. After a Nole turnover, Pan threw up a desperation heave from about two feet inside of half court that went down beating the buzzer and the Jackets had built a healthy 47-38 going into the fourth quarter.

FSU didn’t quit. The Noles went on a 6-2 mini-run to cut the lead to 51-46 but GT responded with a 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 58-46 with 3:41 left in the game. From there the Jackets cruised to a 67-52 final victory.

Post Game

Nicki Ekhomu and Nausia Woolfolk led the Seminoles with 16 and 13 points respectively. Kourtney Weber was the only other Nole in double figures chipping in with 10.

Weber’s performance was one of the few good things to come from this game as she played her best game of the year. Woolfolk also joined the 1000 point club tonight. The rest of this game was rough for the home team.

FSU had 21 turnovers for the second straight game. Unfortunately they weren’t able to overcome them tonight. The reason is that GT turned those turnovers into 20 points while FSU only earned six points off of GT turnovers. This was the main difference in the game. The shooting percentages where close, the rebounding was close, the free throw shooting was close but because of the turnovers Tech had 59 shots while the Noles only had 44. You don’t need a PhD to figure out why FSU lost.

Georgia Tech played well and deserved the victory but this was the first truly bad game that Florida State has played all year. FSU was beaten by the more aggressive team tonight. It certainly seemed that the Seminoles were a step slow all night. It is hard to get up for every game in a long 29 game schedule. Nole fans will hope that this was just one of those games and FSU will be able to bounce back quickly.

Next Game

FSU will try to rebound by welcoming North Carolina to Tallahassee on Sunday. The game will tip at 2pm and will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra. UNC handed NC State their first loss of the year beating the Pack 66-60 tonight.
