No. 12 FSU baseball game thread vs. Cincinnati: Friday, 6:00 PM

CJ Van Eyk to start game one on a chilly night in Tallahassee

Brett Nevitt

Florida State will look to pick up their first Friday victory of the 2020 season as they take on the Cincinnati Bearcats tonight. Cincinnati will be looking for their first win of the season after dropping three games in the Atlanta Challenge. The Bearcats are coming off a 2019 regional appearance after they won the AAC tournament in Clearwater last season.

CJ Van Eyk will get the start for the ‘Noles tonight. Van Eyk will look to build off an impressive start to the 2020 season. Last Friday, the RHP worked five spotless innings, giving up just two hits and one walk. In five shutdown innings, the junior struck out eight batters while working quick and efficient. If he continues to pound the strike zone, he’ll post zeroes at a high rate.

After giving up two earned runs on opening day, lefty Evan Shawver will likely get the Friday start against FSU. Shawver posted a 7.15 ERA in his freshman year in 61.2 IP. He showed a keen ability to miss bats, posting a 10.14 K/9 in 2019. Despite the swing-and-miss ability, he has shown command issues, as he posted a 7.06 BB/9 last season. Against Georgia State, the lefty allowed six hits but also struck out seven in four innings of work.

Right-handed hitters Tyrell Brewer, Cooper Swanson, and Dylan Simmons will be in the lineup today as the coaching staff continues to roll with platoons.

First pitch of game one will be at 6:00 PM and aired on ACC Network Extra. I will have coverage in the game thread below as well as on my personal twitter.
