Florida Senate declares Florida State as 2020 national champions

Yea or nay?

Hang the banner.

Or you know, at the very least get a nice frame for the piece of paper that says that Florida State should have a banner.

Sen. Joe Gruters, a Florida State graduate, introduced a resolution today intending to grant the Seminoles a national championship in basketball after the NCAA tournament was canceled due to coronavirus concerns.

During tonight’s legislative session, which saw Florida lawmakers also pass a bill that will allow student-athletes to seek compensation, the resolution passed with overwhelming numbers.

Now, if you had to present an argument over awarding Florida State a national championship based solely on a not exactly-legally binding random flex by an alum that probably posts the same weird stuff on the same messages boards as you all, the resolution really doesn’t offer any real argument for why the Seminoles deserve the title, other than ranking No. 4 in the final AP Poll of the regular season and being declared the official ACC champions following the cancellation of the ACC Tournament.

From the resolution’s text:

WHEREAS, the Florida State University Seminoles basketball team, under the leadership of Coach Leonard Hamilton, was crowned the regular season Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) champion after a season of superlatives, thus earning the No. 1 seed in the ACC postseason tournament, and

WHEREAS, upon cancellation of the ACC postseason tournament due to concerns raised by the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19, the Seminoles were officially proclaimed the conference champions and were awarded the ACC championship trophy, and

WHEREAS, the Seminoles, ranked No. 4 in the national college basketball standings, ended the regular season with a 26-5 record and were favored to challenge the top seeds in the national tournament and take home the national title, and

WHEREAS, the NCAA basketball championship tournament, known to fans, players, and pundits as March Madness, has also been canceled due to concerns raised by the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

That the Florida State University Seminoles basketball team, by virtue of tremendous skill on the court and the heart and spirit shown by the players and coaches this basketball season, is declared the 2020 National College Athletic Association basketball champions by default upon cancellation of the NCAA tournament due to concerns raised by the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Coach Leonard Hamilton and Florida State University President John Thrasher as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.

So, what do y’all think? Are you going back and deleting all your tweets making fun of UCF for claiming a title, or are you sticking to your guns and not abandoning the controversial “the only way to actual win a title is to be victorious over an opponent in a title game” school of thought?
