FSU basketball vs Notre Dame: Game thread

Will brooms be needed?

NCAA Basketball: Notre Dame at Florida State Melina Myers-USA TODAY Sports

With just two games remaining before the conference tournament, the Florida State Seminoles are in position to do something they’ve never done before: finish with at least of a share of the ACC regular season title. And while it’s still possible to do so even with another loss, the Seminoles are assured of finishing no worse than tied for first if they go 2-0 this week.

The challenge begins tonight in South Bend, Indiana when 7th ranked FSU travels to the Joyce Center to take on a Notre Dame Fighting Irish squad that is desperate for a signature win on its resume. You can check out a great breakdown of this Notre Dame squad courtesy of our newest hoops writer, Kevin Little.

This is the second meeting between the ‘Noles and Irish this season, as Florida State defeated Notre Dame 85-84 in a Tallahassee shootout. Patrick Williams didn’t play in that game, but Wyatt Wilkes went 5-6 from three, before FSU withstood a late rally from their visitors from the north. The Irish had 5 players in double-figures the first go-round, led by 24 from sophomore guard Prentiss Hubb, but only 6 players scored for ND (only 7 played). Double-double machine John Mooney scored 16, but was held to just 5 rebounds.

Michael and Matt discuss what’s changed with each team since that January showdown and make their game predictions on the latest podcast (APPLE // SPOTIFY)—if you just want the preview go to about 15 minutes left. One thing to note that’s not mentioned in the episode, Florida State is 0-3 in South Bend with the closest margin of defeat being 12 points:

Who will win?

Ken Pomeroy: FSU 60%

Vegas line: FSU -1.5, with an O/U of 147

How to watch

FSU draws the late one, tipping at 9:00 PM from the Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center and will be broadcast on ESPN2. Mike Couzens and Jordan Cornette will be on the call.
