Early Signing Day has passed, and it's time to see what is still needed for this FSU roster heading into the 2022 season. The offensive line was defintely bolstered on ESD and so was the defensive line. FSU did get two DB's highlighted by 4-Star Sam McCall. 4-Star QB AJ Duffy signed, helping out the QB room, with Mackenzie Milton graduating and Chubba Purdy transferring. The main issues not addressed were linebacker and wide receiver. These two positions will need some help come National Signing Day in February and through the Transfer Portal.
Wide Receiver is the red hot issue at the moment. FSU lost out on two, highly skilled 4-Star wide outs on Early Signing Day. Just on Sunday, through the Transfer Portal, the Seminoles picked up talented WR Mycah Pittman from Oregon. He will defintely be used instantly. Hopefully, the Notes will get another one or two more through the portal. If FSU doesn't, then WR Coach Ron Dugans will be on the hot seat. Not signing any high school WR didn't bode well for Dugans, and it begins to question wether Head Coach Mike Norvell will replace Dugans with someone who can recruit and especially develop the wide receivers.
Linebacker is another lacking position at Florida State. Former Linebackers Coach Chris Marve, a week after the season, bolted for Virginia Tech to become the Defensive Coordinator under his former college coach Chris Fry, the new Head Coach there. A few days later, Florida State announced that former Miami Head Coach and Florida Defensive Coordinator, Randy Shannon, had been promoted from Senior Defensive Analyst to Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach. Randy Shannon has produce so many quality linebackers for the last thirty years. Him coming in, allows FSU to have a great recruiter that knows the South Florida areas of Dade, Broward, Palm Beach Counties very well. Shannon, will hopefully be talking guys in the portal, since no linebackers were signed on ESD.
Besides, linebacker and wide receiver, it might be best to get an experienced QB, to come in and be a quality backup to Jordan Travis. Quality at this position has lacked since Jameis Winston left after the 2014 season. Jordan Travis over these last two years has shown some growth, but still needs adequate coaching and development to improve his game. FSU fans know he can run, but needs to become a better passer to be complete. Also, Travis has missed a few games due to injury and has played through injuries as well. It would be best to let AJ Duffy redshirt and have Travis at QB1, a transfer at QB2, and Tate Rodemaker as QB3.
Florida State fans can definitely applaud Head Coach Mike Norvell over this 2022 Recruiting Class.Yes, some areas have been addressed, but the Notes need more depth to get through injuries if that plays a role next season. FSU fans know very good and well that the team needs depth at wide receiver and linebacker and a transfer quarterback in order to have a successful 2022 season.
