Dalvin Cook was Dalvin Cook at his absolute best Dalvin Cook. Just incredible. Even did a decent job getting in the way of free rushers the interior of the offensive line let in. One drop and one obvious missed cut aside, excellent.
Jimbo Fisher is incorporating more and more Auden Tate and using his size well. 50/50 balls galore, and using it as a threat to stretch Clemson vertically, opening up space for 2 man concepts. Fisher is having Francois toss 50/50's to Tate when matchup/leverage dictates it. Tate had multiple plays where the defender was forced to interfere due to his size. Some were even flagged.
I absolutely abhor the referee blame game, but the much discussed series of calls had a significant impact on the game. One lesser discussed note - the play where Tate is mugged, came just after. FSU was stopping Clemson regularly, and held them to a FG when they got the ball at midfield. Had just one of those calls not been played, very easy to believe Clemson doesn't get the FG and the complexion of the 4th is changed.
Tate is still young. He's a pretty solid player already but has his moments where he looks like a 2012 Kelvin Benjamin. Importantly, his size is letting Rudolph play more in the slot, which creates good matchups for both.
Major accuracy issues when not pressured, despite very friendly playcalling
Francois isn't perfect pre-snap but he isn't running FSU into 9 man boxes. Pretty solid grasp of the offense overall. The execution, namely accuracy, is lacking. Francois showed comfort in offense and even a couple plays where he showed some anticipation. Hadn't seen much, if any, of that before. That's a serious positive.
Francois put 10+ balls into uncatchable spots. Mostly on easy throws. While the OL isn't good, Francois is leaving a ton of yards on the field and costing FSU a lot of drives. It is hard to determine how much of this is related to injury as opposed to the accuracy issues that have plagued him throughout his career since high school.
Fisher really called this game to the passing strengths of Francois and his receiver corps. The Two Man concept was used a lot from 3x1 and some 2x2 sets. Fade/digs or Fade/out variation accomplishes two things - simple vertical stretch which isolates your big No. 1 Tate, and lets Francois throw the digs and outs he seems to be more comfortable and accurate with. Tons of first down passes to help him out to - more on that below.
First half offense lived and died by the Francois. He was good on the scripted drive and the final two minute drive, and quite poor in between. Counted 8-9 poor balls without pressure in the first half alone. LOT of first down passing - Venables didn't respect Francois much and let them try to throw. Francois couldn't execute. Venables’ gamble paid off.
The result of this was that the first down misses, against very favorable looks, put FSU behind the chains — a situation everyone knew going in Clemson would dominate. The Tigers did.
Adjustments
Fisher called a good game. First half featured orbit action, inside zone, and only had one Two Man call. Second half they immediately went to counter trey and crushed Clemson with it. Were very successful with Two Man concept in second half as well.
Clemson has freaks up front
Dexter Lawrence is everything. The most physically talented defensive tackle to come through the ACC in a while. Christian Wilkins is also special.
Sacks
Francois was sacked six times. That is way too many.
One was entirely Francois’ fault for not accounting for the defender and not throwing the ball away.
One was the fault of the backs and tight ends, who had two blockers for one defender and got split.
Three were entirely or mostly the fault of the offensive line — two physical whippings and one miscommunication/assignment error.
One, we’re not sure who to blame. Just a great blitz by Clemson that was perfect against FSU’s playcall. Sometimes bad luck happens.
But this doesn’t entirely encompass all the hits that the line allowed, which likely have a cumulative impact on Francois.
Offensive line
Bud covered the offensive line earlier in the week (below), but it is worth noting that Florida State had seven false start penalties called against it, and four of the seven were not on the offensive line (1 WR, 2 TE, 1 DB). This is a discipline issue, not specifically an offensive line issue, though three from the offensive line is way too many.
FSU’s run blocking was great ... Creating a 50% opportunity rate, compared to Clemson’s 32%. Its 3.39 line yards/carry was also excellent. And Dalvin Cook maximized those blocks for the most part, hitting a high percentage of correct holes and showcasing his speed.
... but its pass blocking on 2nd/3rd-&-long was awful. There were an unacceptable number of plays where Francois had no shot. This was largely expected, however, as Clemson’s defense was and is one of the best in the nation on obvious passing downs. On third/4th and 6+, FSU converted just 3 of 11. That’s what Clemson’s defense does to opponents in those situations. FSU simply did not stay out of those long downs enough. Of the six sacks, four that were definitively the fault of the offensive line came on 3rd-13, 3rd-16, 3rd-20, and 4th-32. Clemson’s defensive line dominates everyone in those spots, as FSU fans saw Saturday night.

1-10 | at Fs15 | Deondre Francois at QB for Florida State.
1-10 | at Fs15 | 12 Tight | Deondre Francois ML pass complete to Mavin Saunders for 19 yards to the FS34, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Carter), clock 10:44. | PA rollout off OZ action. Francois hits Mavin nicely in flats, 88 gets some more yards. |
1-10 | at Fs34 | 21 I | Dalvin Cook rush over right tackle for 9 yards to the FS43 (O'Daniel;Joseph), clock 10:02. | IZ to field, jet action to boundary. Well blocked, Cook hits hole hard and fights for extra yards. |
2-1 | at Fs43 | 21 I | Freddie Stevenson rush over left guard for 3 yards to the FS46, 1ST DOWN FS (Boulware;Joseph), clock 09:40. | Same formation, Cook motions out of backfield. FB Belly. Classic Jimbo play. |
1-10 | at Fs46 | 12 Tight | Deondre Francois deep pass complete to Auden Tate for 23 yards to the CU31, 1ST DOWN FS, PENALTY CU pass interference declined, clock 09:15. | This looks like Francois saw this matchup pre snap and threw it up to his big man for a 50/50 ball. Auden comes down with it. |
1-10 | at Cu31 | 10 Empty | Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Kermit Whitfield for 12 yards to the CU19, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Joseph). | "Two Man" concept, #1 WR runs fade, #2 and 3 run outs. Francois hits Kermit on the out, and Kermit gets some YAC with his speedz. |
1-10 | at Cu19 | PENALTY FS personal foul (Landon Dickerson) 15 yards to the CU34. | Not sure what happened, but not a Nice moment from 69.
1-25 | at Cu34 | 1st and 10. | ||
1-10 | at Cu34 | 12 Tight | Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 10 yards to the CU44 (Joseph), clock 08:12. | PA Rollout, well recognized by Clemson. Francois sees the orange hat coming at him and just holds on to the darn ball. Huge mental error, completely his responsibility, and to make it on first down is even worse. |
2-20 | at Cu44 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois slant pass complete to Kermit Whitfield for 21 yards to the CU23, 1ST DOWN FS, clock 07:29. | A TUNNEL SCREEN WORKS! HOLY COW! FIRST SUCCESSFUL FSU TUNNEL SCREEN SINCE 'NAM!!! Truly amazing to see this succeed. Whitfield needs to score on this and not trip. |
1-10 | at Cu23 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep out pass incomplete to Nyqwan Murray, clock 07:03. | PA, can't see concept. This is thrown well short of 80. Not sure what happened here. |
2-10 | at Cu23 | 12 Bunch | Dalvin Cook rush over left end for loss of 3 yards to the CU26 (Wilkins), clock 06:45. | IZ left, Wilkins blows by the turnstile named Ruble and there simply isn't anywhere to go after mesh. Terribly by 71. |
3-13 | at Cu26 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 11 yards to the CU37 (Ferrell), clock 05:56. | Interesting play. Designed pump fake screen. Clemson sends 7 against FSU's 6, though, and it has no chance to develop. This is just a tough block for Eberle to make. Does a great job engaging and passing off tackle who crosses his face, but can't get good leverage on the backer looping in quickly. The interior pressure flushes Francois into, well, no space. Great call by Venables. Sometimes they throw paper when you throw rock. |
4-24 | at Cu37 | Logan Tyler punt 37 yards to the CU0, touchback.
Drive: 10 plays, 48 yards, TOP 05:34 | Weird drive. One step forward, two steps back.
1-10 | at Fs25 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 01:41.
1-10 | at Fs25 | 12 Tight | Deondre Francois sideline pass incomplete to Mavin Saunders, clock 01:38. | Triangle read, Francois tosses this in the dirt. Throwing on first down, giving a snag and curl/flat - really can't be made any easier for 12 here. Have to hit the easy stuff. |
2-10 | at Fs25 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois crossing pass incomplete to Travis Rudolph (V. Smith), clock 01:33. | Francois tries to kill Rudolph on this Crosser. Can't throw your receivers into hits like this. Thrown way too late, after the break. |
3-10 | at Fs25 | Timeout Florida State, clock 01:33.
3-10 | at Fs25 | 11 Gun | PENALTY FS false start (Brock Ruble) 5 yards to the FS20, clock 01:33. | 71 moves. |
3-15 | at Fs20 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois screen pass complete to Dalvin Cook for 4 yards to the FS24 (Tankersley;Joseph), clock 01:13. | Good screen call, I think. But good recognition and just some fantastic plays made by Clemson defenders. FSU (WR or TE) misses a crack block which screws this up. |
4-11 | at Fs24 | Logan Tyler punt 25 yards to the FS49, out-of-bounds.
Drive: 3 plays, minus 1 yards, TOP 00:59 | 12 not doing great.
1-10 | at Fs07 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 14:16.
1-10 | at Fs07 | 12 I | Dalvin Cook rush over right end for 3 yards to the FS10 (Pagano), clock 13:56. | T block sweep to field. Clemson's 18273921 elite DL players get penetration, but the real killer is a missed block by WR Auden Tate. Dalvin makes a pretty amazing play to make this positive yards. |
2-7 | at Fs10 | 11 Empty | Deondre Francois sideline pass incomplete to Travis Rudolph, clock 13:29. | Curl flat, Cook runs curl, Rudolph flat. Francois just sails this well over Rudolph's head. Terrible. |
3-7 | at Fs10 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep out pass incomplete to Auden Tate, clock 13:24. | Deep comeback, sailed well over Tate's head and deep into the Clemson sideline. So far over his head that it might have been intentional. |
4-7 | at Fs10 | Logan Tyler punt 37 yards to the FS47, fair catch by Mccloud.
Drive: 3 plays, 3 yards, TOP 00:58 | 12 needs to make life easier on himself by being better.
1-10 | at Fs40 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 12:03.
1-10 | at Fs40 | 21 I | Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Travis Rudolph, PENALTY FS holding off-setting, PENALTY CU pass interference off-setting, NO PLAY, clock 11:56. | Both calls legit |
1-10 | at Fs40 | 12 Tight | Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Auden Tate, PENALTY CU pass interference (Fields) 15 yards to the CU45, 1ST DOWN FS, NO PLAY, clock 11:50. | Quick fade to Tate. Letting your QB give your big man a 50/50 again. And with that size, defenders going to struggle and will ocasionally get PI. |
1-10 | at Cu45 | 21 I | Dalvin Cook rush up middle for 7 yards to the CU38 (O'Daniel), clock 11:27. | Orbit action to field, IZ to boundary. Really nicely blocked. FSU OL move nicely to second level, Cook takes this all the way into secondary. |
2-3 | at Cu38 | PENALTY FS false start (Ryan Izzo) 5 yards to the CU43, clock 11:11. | Why?
2-8 | at Cu43 | 11 Pistol | Deondre Francois deep out pass incomplete to Ryan Izzo, PENALTY CU holding (Boulware) 10 yards to the CU33, 1ST DOWN FS, NO PLAY, clock 10:45. | Smash. Izzo definitely held on corner, but this ball was saild well overhead. Probably should have been uncatchable if it was PI, but for holding it does not matter. |
1-10 | at Cu33 | 21 I | Dalvin Cook rush up middle for 4 yards to the CU29 (Ferrell), clock 10:30. | Orbit action to field, IZ. Running into 9 in the box, orbit can't clear that number advantage up. |
2-6 | at Cu29 | PENALTY FS false start (Travis Rudolph) 5 yards to the CU34, clock 10:01. | why?
2-11 | at Cu34 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois slant pass incomplete to Auden Tate, clock 09:38. | Trying to use Tate's size on the slant.... but that don't work when it's thrown at his knees. And it gets Tate hit hard. Thrown on time, by Francois' standards, so super late. He plays on Cuban time. |
3-11 | at Cu34 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois slant pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for 22 yards to the CU12, 1ST DOWN FS (Boulware), clock 09:24. | Middle WR screen, fantastic call. Very well executed - timed extremely well with Clemson blitzing hard. |
1-10 | at Cu12 | 21 I | Dalvin Cook rush over right guard for 8 yards to the CU4, fumble forced by V. Smith, fumble by Dalvin Cook recovered by FS Roderick Johnson at CU4, clock 08:37. | Showcases everything great and questionable about 4 in one play. Just insane cuts in hole and quick to speed to get several yards, but then ball security issues pop up. Lucky to have the ball fall their way. |
2-2 | at Cu04 | 21 I | Dalvin Cook rush over left guard for 4 yards to the CU0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 08:20. | Zone right, and this time he doesn't drop it. Tells the crowd to calm down, he's got this. Didn't drop the ball while doing so. |
Clemson 14, Florida State 7
Drive: 6 plays, 60 yards, TOP 03:43 | Good drive overall. Physical run blocking from the OL, overcame WR/TE/QB mistakes.
1-10 | at Fs14 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 05:39.
1-10 | at Fs14 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois sideline pass incomplete to Travis Rudolph (Tankersley), clock 05:35. | Looks like Francois misses/ignores traditional Jimbo autocheck from this alignment. Very typically, they'll check to QB sweep with this alignment. They proceed with all curls, and 12 throws it too late. Has to at very least anticipate a simple curl. Even if it's just off the TE's collision. |
2-10 | at Fs14 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep pass complete to Travis Rudolph for 18 yards to the FS32, 1ST DOWN FS (V. Smith;Boulware), clock 05:18. | 3 verticals. Francois hits Rudolph in the hole on the edge on cover 2. Fantastic display of anticipation (he can do that??) by 12. Happy to see this. Throw a big wide but great adjustment by Rudolph. |
1-10 | at Fs32 | 21 I | Deondre Francois deep pass intercepted by J. Johnson at the CU29, J. Johnson return 3 yards to the CU32. | PA, 7 man protection. Shot play, but well sniffed and Wilkins is in 12's face because the tight end/fullback couldn't double team him. Unacceptable. While this is not the best throw, Auden Tate mistimes his jump making it an easy interception for the safety. This is where Tate has to help out his QB more. |
Drive: 3 plays, 18 yards, TOP 00:54
1-10 | at Fs22 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 01:44.
1-10 | at Fs22 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Nyqwan Murray, clock 01:38. | You could argue a little shirt pull here kept 80 from being able to catch this. Nicely thrown by 12. |
2-10 | at Fs22 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois rush QX for 9 yards to the FS31 (Joseph), clock 01:31. | Trips to field, Francois recognizes a running lane in middle of field and takes it. Nearly gets the first. |
Official Review: Ruling on the field is down at the FSU 32 yardline.
Official Review: New spot is the FSU 31.
3-1 | at Fs31 | 11 I | Dalvin Cook rush left for 1 yard to the FS32, 1ST DOWN FS (Lamar), clock 01:10. | IZ left, FSU grinds out the tough yard. Cook does a nice job falling forward. |
1-10 | at Fs32 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois deep pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for 40 yards to the CU28, 1ST DOWN FS (Tankersley), clock 00:54. | Both 15 and 80 streak down sideline, with Noonie winning the footrace. Kid is fast. Gets past the corner. Francois throws this well behind, almost 5 yards, and Noonie does a fantastic job slowing up and adjusting and catching the ball. While behind, could argue that at least it was thrown away from the defender to the back shoulder. |
1-10 | at Cu28 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois deep out pass complete to Kermit Whitfield for 23 yards to the CU5, 1ST DOWN FS (J. Johnson), clock 00:41. | Smash, Kermit is wide ass open on the corner. Not sure if this was a bust by Clemson or not. |
1-G | at Cu05 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois sideline pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for 5 yards to the CU0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 00:23. | Trips to field. 12 hits 80 on boundary side comeback. Fantastic anticipation and ball where only 80 can get it. Fantastic. |
Clemson 17, Florida State 14
Drive: 6 plays, 78 yards, TOP 01:21 | Great 2 minute drive. Mostly good throws from Francois.
1-10 | at Fs25 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 15:00.
1-10 | at Fs25 | Deondre Francois at QB for Florida State.
1-10 | at Fs25 | 11 Gun | Dalvin Cook rush left for no gain to the FS25 (Tankersley;Joseph), clock 14:34. | Counter trey left. Well read by Tankersley, who blows by Tate and forces Cook to come up inside to nothing. Normally you'd expect WRs to run off DBs but this was well read by Clemson. |
2-10 | at Fs25 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois MR pass incomplete to Ryan Izzo, clock 14:21. | 3x1 to Field with Izzo flexed, Two Man concept. Francois gives Izzo no chance on this out, throwing it way too low. |
3-10 | at Fs25 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois ML pass complete to Dalvin Cook for 11 yards to the FS36, 1ST DOWN FS (Boulware;Ferrell), clock 14:03. | Can't see distribution downfield because crappy camera work, but Francois does a nice job hitting Cook underneath. Cook does a great job making one miss and getting the first down, bailing out his QB. |
1-10 | at Fs36 | 10 Gun | Dalvin Cook rush over left end for 3 yards to the FS39 (Boulware;Watkins), clock 13:26. | Trips right to field. Inside zone read/bubble RPO. Correct decision to give. Neither Dickerson nor Eberle find Boulware at the second level and he has an easy road to Cook. Need better blocking at second level. |
2-7 | at Fs39 | 12 Bunch | Dalvin Cook rush up middle for 5 yards to the FS44 (Wiggins), clock 12:45. | Split Zone, 4 does a nice job cutting back but safeties aren't respecting the pass. They're there to stop this quick. |
3-2 | at Fs44 | Timeout Clemson, clock 12:19.
3-2 | at Fs44 | 11 Bunch | Deondre Francois crossing pass incomplete to Travis Rudolph (Ferrell), clock 12:14. | Mesh, 12 throws this behind Rudolph. Protection slip here. |
4-2 | at Fs44 | QB hurry by Joseph.
4-2 | at Fs44 | Logan Tyler punt 51 yards to the CU5, downed.
Drive: 6 plays, 19 yards, TOP 02:57 | Not good.
1-10 | at Fs23 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 09:03.
1-10 | at Fs23 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep out pass incomplete to Nyqwan Murray, PENALTY CU pass interference (Fields) 14 yards to the FS37, 1ST DOWN FS, NO PLAY, clock 08:57. | Deep switch, 12 hits 80 on the comeback. 80 gets mugged. |
1-10 | at Fs37 | 12 I | Dalvin Cook rush left for loss of 1 yard to the FS36 (O'Daniel), clock 08:35. | IZ left, good run blitz by Venables. Clemson showing little respect to FSU's 1st down pass game. FSU will change its blocking to counter this later. |
2-11 | at Fs36 | PENALTY FS false start (Ryan Izzo) 5 yards to the FS31, clock 08:16. | Another false start by ... not an offensive lineman.
2-16 | at Fs31 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois middle pass incomplete to Ryan Izzo, PENALTY FS illegal shift declined, clock 07:51. | Two Man concept variation - fade/digs instead of fade/outs. Izzo runs this dig too round and Francois gave him no chance with a poor throw. |
3-16 | at Fs31 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 10 yards to the FS21 (A. Bryant), clock 07:33. | Ruble gets absolutely smoked on the outside on a 3 man pressure. Completely inexcusable. |
4-26 | at Fs21 | Logan Tyler punt 38 yards to the CU41, Mccloud return -8 yards to the CU33 (Matthew Thomas).
Drive: 3 plays, minus 2 yards, TOP 01:56 | hard to expect much on obviuos passing downs.
1-10 | at Cu43 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 06:26.
1-10 | at Cu43 | 11 Gun | Dalvin Cook rush right for 43 yards to the CU0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 06:18. | Counter Trey right, perfectly blocked. Great play call - Clemson tipped field pressure and the counter got them flowing to field side, making it easy for Dalvin on boundary. Dalvin's speed messes up the Clemson safety's angle in run support. And then good downfield blocking from Tate makes it easy sailing for number 4. Clemson was in a similar run blitz it has hurt FSU with before and this was a nice counter. |
Florida State 21, Clemson 20
Drive: 1 plays, 43 yards, TOP 00:08 | Good drive! ;) In all seriousness, Clemson does at time give up big runs and that is how to beat them.
1-10 | at Fs30 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 04:07.
1-10 | at Fs30 | 12 Tight | Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 2 yards to the FS28 (A. Bryant;Lawrence), clock 03:45. | Eberle does not see the blitzing linebacker at all. Terrible, terrible terrible here. Must do better. 12 has no chance. Excellent timing by Clemson, too. Good interior blitz team. |
2-12 | at Fs28 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois post pass incomplete to Auden Tate, clock 03:23. | Houston concept. Dexter Lawrence sheds Dickerson like he isn't even there - just as bad as when Timmy Jernigan rag dolled the Miami center. Lawrence is a force. This was under pressure, but 12 has to get a better pass out here. Straight into the dirt on the post. |
3-12 | at Fs28 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois crossing pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for 1 yard to the FS29 (Tankersley), clock 03:05. | Play is a designed WR screen intended to look like Mesh concept. Neatly drawn up, but Tankersley was just too close in phase. Tate is probably supposed to rub him here. |
4-11 | at Fs29 | Logan Tyler punt 42 yards to the CU29, out-of-bounds.
Drive: 3 plays, minus 1 yards, TOP 01:35 | OL gets you into a tough passing down.
1-10 | at Fs30 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 00:55.
1-10 | at Fs30 | 10 Pistol | Dalvin Cook rush left for 70 yards to the CU0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 00:43. | Bubble/Countery Trey. Poor Van Smith. Same play, same angle, same Dalvin Cook explosion he just simply cannot fathom. He takes the bad angle and Dalvin has green to run into. Fantastically blocked all around. Going to miss 4 next year. |
Florida State 28, Clemson 20
Drive: 1 plays, 70 yards, TOP 00:12 | Good drive!
1-10 | at Fs25 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 11:30.
1-10 | at Fs25 | 12 Pony | Dalvin Cook rush right for 9 yards to the FS34 (O'Daniel), PENALTY FS illegal block (Freddie Stevenson) 15 yards to the FS19, clock 11:14. | Counter trey. Jimbo keeps going back to it - it's there. Poor Van Smith gets blocked out of the play instead of running himself out of it this time. Absolutely TERRIBLE, inexcusable, and "gutless" call by the umpire. |
1-16 | at Fs19 | 1st and 16. | ||
1-16 | at Fs19 | PENALTY FS unsportsmanlike conduct 9 yards to the FS10. | This cannot happen, though. Killed the drive.
Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was on the FSU bench. | Crowd chanting "BS", fairly so.
1-25 | at Fs10 | 11 Gun | Dalvin Cook rush up middle for loss of 3 yards to the FS7 (Ferrell), clock 10:36. | Power/bubble, correct decision. Eberle struggles to down block Lawrence and gets stood up right into middle of backfield. Cook has nowhere to go. Lawrence is amazingly talented. |
2-28 | at Fs07 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Auden Tate, clock 10:08. | Four verticals, Francois sees Tate matched up with a small dude and lets his big guy fight for it. Absolutely TERRIBLE non-call here. Arm around the waist before Tate jumped. This ref didn't make the call because he got an earful from Jimbo. Totally inexcusable. |
3-28 | at Fs07 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois crossing pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for 15 yards to the FS22 (Carter), clock 09:46. | Just not enough. |
4-13 | at Fs22 | PENALTY FS false start (Tarvarus McFadden) 5 yards to the FS17, clock 09:16.
4-18 | at Fs17 | Logan Tyler punt 35 yards to the CU48, downed.
Drive: 4 plays, minus 8 yards, TOP 02:37
1-10 | at Fs20 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 05:19.
1-10 | at Fs20 | 21 Pony | Dalvin Cook rush over left end for 5 yards to the FS25 (Wiggins), clock 05:05. | Counter Trey left, Izzo can't sustain the block and Cook is slowed up enough for second level defenders to bring him down. Nice gain. |
2-5 | at Fs25 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep out pass complete to Kermit Whitfield for 14 yards to the FS39, 1ST DOWN FS (Wiggins), clock 04:32. | PA off counter trey, rollout right. 12 throws this well behind with no pressure. A couple yards more right and Kermit doesn't have to take a hit while catching it. |
1-10 | at Fs39 | 21 Pony | Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Dalvin Cook, dropped pass, clock 04:08. | PA off power action, Francois finds Cook on the wheel and Dalvin just plum drops it. |
2-10 | at Fs39 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Travis Rudolph, PENALTY CU pass interference (Tankersley) 15 yards to the CU46, 1ST DOWN FS, NO PLAY, clock 04:01. | PA, Francois really makes his own bed (grave?) here. Really good delayed blitz from backer, who 12 doesn't see. Don't really expect an OL to pick up this well disguised/delayed blitz. But Francois needs to at least see him and adjust, throw it away, or try to run away. On top of that, he throws it into double coverage and gets wrecked. FSU gets lucky that Tankersley didn't try to play the ball and instead interfered. Heck, his terribly underthrown ball may be the only reason they tried to interfere. |
Injured player for FSU is #12-Francois. Walks slowly off the field. | You play with fire, you're going to get hit really hard and need to sit out a play.
1-10 | at Cu46 | Sean Maguire at QB for Florida State.
1-10 | at Cu46 | 21 pony | Freddie Stevenson rush left for 38 yards to the CU8, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (V. Smith), clock 03:48. | Maguire makes a good run check here. Numbers to field side were there, he checks the run to that side. IZ, very well blocked. Only isn't 6 because Van Smith is finally able to catch someone! |
1-G | at Cu08 | Deondre Francois at QB for Florida State.
1-G | at Cu08 | 21 I | Dalvin Cook rush right for 8 yards to the CU0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 03:23. | IZ, well blocked, Dalvin cuts to field side and makes a bee line for the pylon. Nobody's catching him. |
1-G | at Cu03 | Timeout Florida State, clock 03:23. | Burning timeouts on 2 point conversions ain't good.
11 Gun | Deondre Francois pass attempt failed. | Well drawn up switch play. Not a pick play, may be designed to be a bit of a rub though. Looks like double slants, then Rudolph runs a whip from #2 slot. Francois throws a good ball to where Rudolph should be on a whip, but Rudolph runs it up fieldway too quick, inexplicably. Veteran WR can't make this sort of mistake.
Florida State 34, Clemson 29
Drive: 5 plays, 80 yards, TOP 01:56 | Good drive, frustrating conversion.
Logan Tyler kickoff 65 yards to the CU0, touchback.
1-10 | at Fs21 | FLORIDA STATE drive start at 02:01.
1-10 | at Fs21 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep in pass complete to Travis Rudolph for 19 yards to the FS40, 1ST DOWN FS (V. Smith), clock 01:47. | Can't see playside route concept, but curl/flat on backside. Francois does a very nice job reading playside and moving on to backside where he hits Rudolph on the curl in the hole in the zone. |
1-10 | at Fs40 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep out pass complete to Nyqwan Murray for 13 yards to the CU47, 1ST DOWN FS (Carter), clock 01:33. | Switch, Francois throws behind Murray, who makes a good catch. Toughness from little 80 here. Clemson in 2-man, flag route beats it. |
1-10 | at Cu47 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Travis Rudolph, clock 01:19. | Francois throws a fade up the sideline to Rudolph because Rudolph got outside here. Good throw. I think Rudolph misjudged this ball in the air. If he keeps running, it's on his outside shoulder. |
2-10 | at Cu47 | 11 Gun | Dalvin Cook rush left for loss of 3 yards to the 50 yardline (Tankersley), clock 01:04. | counter Trey left. Well read by boundary defenders and this just didn't have a chance. |
3-13 | at Fs50 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep out pass incomplete to Nyqwan Murray, clock 00:49, PENALTY FS holding (Brock Ruble) 10 yards to the FS40, NO PLAY, clock 00:49. | Ruble gave this dude a nice hug while he was riding him. Just got beat inside. Wilkins will be beating far better tackles than Rudolph all year. |
3-23 | at Fs40 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois deep pass complete to Travis Rudolph for 26 yards to the CU34, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds, clock 00:43. | Trips to field. Backshoulder throw. Not the best throw, but timing was right and that's what matters most. 15 makes a play at the ball in bounds and then stops the clock. |
1-10 | at Cu34 | PENALTY FS false start (Brock Ruble) 5 yards to the CU39, clock 00:43. | INEXCUSABLE
1-15 | at Cu39 | PENALTY FS false start (Landon Dickerson) 5 yards to the CU44, clock 00:43. | INEXCUSABLE
1-20 | at Cu44 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois ML pass incomplete to Travis Rudolph, clock 00:39. | Francois feels pressure that isn't there, and throws this off his back foot and well over Rudolph. 15 didn't have a chance at this. Believe this was the one where Cook was wide open, possibly for a TD. |
2-20 | at Cu44 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois deep pass incomplete to Auden Tate, clock 00:32. | Sprint out right, 7 man protection. Francois finds #3, but makes a terrible throw despite being able to set his feet. |
3-20 | at Cu44 | 10 Gun | Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 12 yards to the FS44 (Lawrence;Wilkins), clock 00:26. | This is what happens when your right side of Eberle, Dickerson, and Ruble face pressure from Dexter Lawrence and Christian Wilkins. Two future Sunday guys just make a mess of them. Wilkins hits a fantastic spin move around Ruble and Eberle has no chance with no help from 69. FSU knew it was dead if it got in long down/distance against this front, and it was. |
4-32 | at Fs44 | Timeout Florida State, clock 00:26.
4-32 | at Fs44 | 11 Gun | Deondre Francois sacked for loss of 11 yards to the FS33 (Boulware). | Trips right. 6 man pressure against 6 man pass pro. Double A gap pressure flushes 12 and that is the ball game. Protection should have slid opposite way. |
Drive: 9 plays, 12 yards, TOP 01:43 | Yuck. |
