Rumors had been running rampant since he was missing from FSU’s depth chart released earlier this week, but FSU interim head coach Odell Haggins confirmed Thursday that Florida State will be without starting linebacker Matthew Thomas for FSU’s upcoming Independence Bowl matchup against Southern Miss.

Thomas is the latest in a trend of FSU players who will sit out of next week’s bowl matchup, joining junior safety Derwin James and junior defensive end Josh Sweat, both of whom are preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft, as well as senior wide receiver Ermon Lane.

For Thomas, a senior, his career at FSU is finished.

Thomas’ legacy at FSU will go down as a mixed one. The former five-star recruit has impressed over the last two years when consistently on the field, but his career was hampered with multiple suspensions and injuries in his early years at FSU. Still, his prospects in the NFL remain somewhat promising based off his skills alone.

FSU takes on Southern Miss next Wednesday, December 27th at 12:30 p.m. in the Walk-Ons Independence Bowl.
